What was the first Rotary Foundation educational programme ?

Well done Christine. You guessed it. See the answer later in the Bulletin.

Another question next week.

Rotary's special months

April is . . . Maternal and Child Health Month

Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of

children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At

least 7 million children under the age of five, die each year due

to malnutrition, poor health care and/or inadequate sanitation.

This is not good enough and Rotary is doing something about it.

We can all do our bit to help . . . .

WELCOME TO OUR GUESTS:

All the players and partners of the AGFR

DG Linda McLerie

PDG Brian Guest

2017 – AGFR – here in Perth

April 2 - 7

The dinner on April 4 at the WA Golf Club was a great success. It was well attended by members and

friends; as well as the players and partners involved in the Golf Tournament.

Well done to the organising committee. The feedback so far is that it is another great success story from

the players.

Thank you to all the members who have volunteered to support the event during the week.

The two final days will be held at the Mt Lawley Golf Course, 1 Walter Road, Inglewood.

PLEASE CHECK THE HOST CHAIR ROSTER

DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO FIND YOUR SPEAKER.

Please notify Dianne Reed as soon as possible about the guest speaker you have lined up, and their topic so

April 24 – Board Meeting

7 May – Grants Seminar If we want to continue to access RI Grants to use on our projects we need to send a representative (or more) to this event. Hugh has the details, but as he is presenting he is not counted as our person. Who is willing to keep President Mike company on the day?

Mystery Event – May We are looking for ideas on how to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Rotary Foundation. If you have any ideas – pass them on to Peter.

Handover – July 2 At Mt Lawley Golf Club for a Brunch meeting. Cost will be $35 per head – more details to come

A big thank you to all the Sponsors of the AGFR Event. Once I get a list I will publish them in the

Bulletin so that we can support them if we can. They were read out at the dinner, but too quickly for

me to capture them to include them in this issue.

POWERBALL

Congratulations to all our

winners. A new one will be

starting soon. Maybe it will

be your turn this time to

win.

GUEST SPEAKERS: James Savundra (Specialist Anaesthetist) and David Vyse (Plastic Surgeon)

Topic: INTERPLAST EXPERIENCES

Interplast has been around internationally for some time and commenced in Australia in 1983 as a joint venture between Rotary and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Since that time they have held more than 40,000 patient consultations and over 23,000 surgeries across 25 countries in the Asia Pacific region. The focus for Interplast is about repairing bodies and rebuilding lives. James and David have both been involved in a number of these expeditions. James’ first trip was to Tonga where repairing cleft palates were the major part of what they did. If they can operate on a child before they turn 4 they will turn the life around of the young children they operate on. According to James and David cleft palate operations are relatively simple operations which can make huge differences to children, families and the communities they live in. Over the years the focus has been on training the medical staff in the countries they visit to do these operations themselves, and so now the focus for the Interplast teams is now more on dealing with burns victims and people with tumors and other deformities. David mentioned that one of the joys of their work is seeing the transformation in the life of the person. He mentioned that the greatest joy comes with the person being willing to make eye contact once the surgery has been completed. Both men are incredibly grateful for the support Rotary provides to this amazing program which can unlock someone’s life in a single operation. The joy we bring to families is unbelievable. Although the operation is only on one person at a time, the whole community benefits from the results. Thank you David and James for your very informative take on the work of Interplast. It’s good to hear that when you are out on a ‘job’ you do get time to relax and get some sightseeing in. We really appreciate that you are willing to take time out of your very busy schedule to perform these amazing life changing operations to the many people who need our support.
