One Jellyroll (16020JR) or 40–2½”x WOF squares

Inner Border 1 & Half melons: (16023 15) ⅞ yard

Inner Border 2 & Binding: (16028 11) 1 yard

Final border: (16021 13) 1¾ yards

Sheer Interfacing (22”W): 4 yards

MAIN BLOCK:Select 36 squares from Layer Cake

MELONS:Select 10 pairs (40) of Jellyroll strips

INNER BORDER 1 AND HALF MELONS:Cut 10–2½"x WOF set aside 4 for melons then join remaining strips for border

INNER BORDER 2 AND BINDING:Cut 8–2½"x WOF bindingCut 6–1"x WOF Inner Border 2 join strips for border

FINAL BORDER:Cut 7–8"x WOF join strips for border

4 For the half melons, cut 2 remaining prepared interfacing strips in half down the center line. Align the interfacing center line ¼" up from the edge of brown strip. Pin. Begin stitching at the edge of the strip then follow the marked lines. Trim leaving a scant ¼" seam allowance, clip curves, turn and press. Make 24 half melons.

2 Draw guide line down the center of each interfacing strip. Align center point of melon template on center line. Trace melons.

3 Place marked interfacing on top (right side) of sewn jellyroll strips. Align guideline and seam allowance. Pin in place. Stitch on marked lines to make melons. Make 6 melons. Repeat for remaining strip sets. Total 60 melons.

Trim sewn melons leaving a scant ¼" seam allowance. Clip curves. Cut a slit in middle of interfacing. Turn melon and press.

Don't be fooled, this quilt is easy to make! A jelly roll and a layer cake, a "jelly cake" simplifi es the cutting. Appliquéd melons are the fi nishing touch!

HINT: For more variety, cut jellyroll strips in half at fold before making strip sets.You will also need to cut interfacing strip in half. Th en stitch 3 melons for each shorter strip set.

8 Layer, quilt, bind and ENJOY!

5 Arrange the 36 layer cake squares (36–10"x 10") into 6 rows of 6 squares. Press rows in alternately directions. Join the rows.

Center the melons then applique to the quilt top

6 Appliqué the melons to the quilt top. Add the brown half melons around the perimeter of the top. Use a chalk pencil to mark the center of the block square (4¾" from the block edge). Finger press the melon in half to fi nd it's center, then align the block & melon centers, pin in place and appliqué. Repeat with the whole melons, centering them on the seams between the blocks and the center edge of the block.

7 Add the 2½" inner borders sides fi rst then top and bottom. Add the 1" inner borders, sides fi rst then top and bottom. Add the 8" fi nal borders, sides fi rst then top and bottom. Measure across the center of the quilt as you add each border, to determine the length of the borders.
