From the Desk of the PastorDear Parishioners,

Happy First Sunday of Advent! In my First Sunday of Advent bulletin letter last year

(12/1/19), I wrote to all of you in expectant, but fearful an-ticipation of the crowds that join us each year for Christmas. Particularly at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve the numbers had got-ten so large that in recent years we’ve had to begin to offer two simultaneous masses – one in the upper Church and the other in our Lannon Chapel.

I asked that we look upon all the new faces that may show up during Advent, and especially at Christmas, as an answer to someone’s prayer for them. I further suggested that per-haps someone you are praying for might similarly show up as a new face at a parish somewhere. I further pointed out that our hope surely is that all of them begin to return regularly. Still if they return once or just twice a year, it is better than noth-ing. After all their presence are prayers answered, even if only partially.

I then invited us to ask our-selves how we would want our answer to prayer to be treated. What type of welcome would we want them to receive at the Church where they show up? Wouldn’t we want them to be warmly welcomed? Wouldn’t we want to see the regular pa-rishioners at that parish at least take their coat off the seat next to them or maybe slide over to make room? Wouldn’t we want some regular parishioners to introduce themselves and try to start some conversation?

Finally, I ended with a hope that all through the Advent and Christmas Season we each “stay awake” diligently on the lookout for new faces – those possible answers to someone’s

the welcome we would give to the Christ child. Let’s help them to feel they’ve come to the right place; they belong.

Of course, this year because of the need to contain the spread of the coronavirus, we will not have any real oppor-tunity to be “watchful and alert” for new faces coming to our Church. Not only has our capacity been drastically reduced by the protocols of the pandemic, but also many do not feel at all comfortable being in a large indoor public space, even with masks and social distancing.

Knowing that we will neither have the crowds nor the num-ber of volunteers necessary to handle many public Masses, we will have this year just two livestream Masses – one at midnight and the other at 10:30am Christmas morning – each open to our registered parishioners with advance reservation.

As for our very popular annual Christmas Children’s Pag-eant, we are currently in the process of putting together a vir-

tual Liturgy of the Word with a children’s pageant that will premiere at 4:00pm on Christmas Eve. [Families stay tuned for how you might be part of the Christmas Pageant!] We will follow this premiere with a chance for families to gather together on Zoom to offer one another Christmas greetings.

I am sure when we closed our church building on March 14th none of us would have ever imagined that we would still not be able to gather as a full parish community this Christmas. And while many of us might not be able to be “watchful and alert” for new faces arriving at our Church here in Chestnut Hill, let us be “watchful and alert” for opportunities in which Christ will come to us:

-- for Christ plays in ten thousand places, Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his

Virtual Posada Journey: In Search of Shelter and Protection

December 16th - 24thThis year because of the pandemic, Ignatian Solidarity Network invites you to join in Virtual Posadas where you will receive a daily experience of music, art, prayer and re-flection as we virtually journey with migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border in search of

shelter and protection, just as the Holy Family did on Christmas Eve.

To register for this experience, contact Kathy Maher at [email protected] by December 12th. Please indicate if you would like to receive materials for this

    experience in English or Spanish.

What are Posadas? The tradition of Las Posadas is a reenactment of the journey when Joseph and Mary

searched for room at the inn, but none was to be found. In a traditional Las Posadas cel-ebration, a group of people travels from house to house singing, seeking shelter for the

night, answered by those indoors, answering in song. At the final home, the peregrinos, or pilgrims, are welcomed inside to

    pray, eat, and celebrate.
