Our bulletin letter on July 12th covered cancel culture and its impact. In the interest of continuing the conversation from a faith perspective, this week provides an expansion of that original topic.
To offer a brief recap: cancel culture is the act of remov-ing support from a person or entity, due to an offense they committed, through means of protest, boycotts, social media campaigns, or other efforts that shed light on transgressions. Although canceling is easier to identify among celebrities and

social media, fuels cancel culture. No-
users with an increase in dopamine, that neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter make this do-pamine induced pleasure achievable in mere seconds. Adapted from the dis-course of the past, cancel culture has become a thunderous performance. Viral Tweets that target problematic persons or organizations typically radiate a sense of self pride for the original author and followers who share the content. Instead of focusing on rectifying the injustice, these types of social media users wea-ponize shame in order to boost their image for the temporary stimulus of likes and shares.
Participants of mainstream cancel culture may consider themselves triumphant, but who are their actions helping? Certainly not the marginalized folks whom they claim to be protecting. Forced atonement is often insincere. Sadly, victims then may feel obligated to accept the halfhearted apology and feign forgiveness. Engaging in behaviors that promote instant
they place pressure on the involved parties. Context is an important factor in addressing injustice. How
was the message delivered and received, and how does that compare to the original intention? Recalling the Kate Smith controversy, she recorded two racist songs in the 1930s. In a 1945 radio interview, she denounced racism as a “disease,” in-dicating personal growth. Consequences for racism and other offenses are necessary, but it is important to acknowledge no person is beyond redemption. We must both denounce harm-ful actions while widely opening our arms to provide them

with the opportunity to learn and grow. We owe it to our fel-low humans to approach the situation with compassion and patience.
The grace of discernment is needed to determine whether giving a platform to problematic behavior is worth the hostil-ity that will undoubtedly result. Some instances fare better to open the doors to healthy dialogue without directly engaging in what will surely escalate into a vitriolic interaction. Educa-tion is by no means an easy feat, but it is worth the endeavor to bear the fruits of social justice.
The future of cancel culture depends on our actions and re-
our family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances? A faithful response must battle injustice while upholding the dignity of all. By committing to walking with one another on a path of compassion and patience, we will surely help education and dialogue to prevail and build among us the Kingdom of Heaven. "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." (James 5:16)

Last Call: The Catholic AppealEven in the midst of a global pandemic, service to others remains core to the work
of our Church. Anointing the sick. Serving our faith communities. Supporting our
schools. And so much more. As you know, your gift to the annual
Catholic Appeal helps supports this work. This year the Archdio-
cese helped us with guidance and supplies to reopen our Church
building as well as aid us in securing the government loan needed
to keep our employees on payroll. Each year your generosity has
helped us reach our Annual Appeal goal and as a result we received
a rebate. This year 98 parishioners have already donated and we
need 126 donors in order to qualify for a rebate in 2020. We recognize that some of
you may not but able to donate this year. If you are able, please prayerfully consider
making a gift to the 2020 Catholic Appeal to ensure that this critical work continues.

(Santiago 5:16)

Please remember in
your prayers,
Dennis McCrory,
who recently passed away. A
longtime parishioner,
Dr. McCrory and his wife,
Jane, were regulars at our Family Mass. He
was a renowned and award winning psychia-
trist and writer who was published in numer-
ous rehabilitation journals and books.
We mourn his loss, celebrate his humble life
and tremendous impact in the area
of mental health.
To read his obituary, visit: www.eatonfuneralhomes.com/obituary/Dennis-McCroryMD
Notice:Dr. Anthony Compagnone, a parishioner and member of the Liturgy
Commission, has advised us that masks are effective ONLY if they cover both your nose and your mouth,
with a snug fit over the nasal bridge. This is the best way to prevent your respiratory droplets from escap-
ing into the space around you and onto others.
Further, he pointed out that recent studies have shown that, while valved masks may make it easier for
you to inhale, they are ineffective in preventing your exhaled breath from
contaminating the air around you.
Valved masks of any kind, therefore, will be prohibited for use during Mass at St. Ignatius. The Greeter
at your liturgy will happily provide you with an acceptable mask to wear as you enter the church. We also
ask that you wear your mask properly throughout the Mass.
This is for the safety of us all. We appreciate your cooperation.
