irst Reading: Deuteronomy 30:10-14

In our Hebrew Scripture reading, an important quality of the Torah is discussed. God’s teaching is not far away or hidden or abstract. It dwells within our hearts.

econd Reading: Colossians 1:15-20

For the next several weeks, our second reading will be taken from the letter to the Colossians. This letter was probably written around the year 70, a few years after the death of Paul, by a disciple who wished to perpetuate the teachings of his master. It contains profound, often mystical, insights into the nature of the Christian faith. In this excerpt, the author uses the Hebrew tradition of Lady Wisdom to describe Christ as the one who reveals God.

ospel: Luke 10:25-37

In this weekend’s Gospel, Jesus and a lawyer have a friendly discussion about the Torah. The lawyer summarizes the Torah in typical rabbinic fashion by quoting from the books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus. In response to a further question, Jesus tells a story that develops an idea from Leviticus: everyone is my neighbor.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of July 10

THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN

"And who is my neighbor?" (Luke 10: 25-37) Jesus tells the parable about the Good Samaritan in order to answer posed by the legal scholar who was testing our Lord. “And who is my neighbor?” Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy. Keep your head down. Don't look. Stay where you are. And, for the love of God, don't go over there. Stay on your side of the street. You don't want to get mixed up in that. You can't do anything for the guy lying there bleeding. Someone has probably already called the police and EMTs. After all, that's what they're paid for. And, besides, what was the guy doing on that side of the street in the first place? Keep walking down the corridor. Don't get involved. The guys making fun of that kid - they're just jerks. A teacher will be along any minute now. Hey, this kind of taunting takes place in every school. No big deal. Don't look up from your cubicle. Just keep working. Another round of layoffs has hit. Throughout the building employees are being escorted by security to their cubicles and given 30 minutes to clean out their personal belongings before being marched to human resources for quick exit interviews. You could see it coming. But you're safe. You think, I'll call her later or I'll stop by his place once things have settled down. You probably won't. You stay on your side of the street. Or the hall. Or the floor. And keep moving. There's really nothing you can do. Just keep your face buried in your I-phone or tablet screen and you'll be fine. While we are rightly appalled by the behavior of the priest and the Levite who pass by the victim in Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan, the reality is that we are all conditioned to stay on the "opposite

side," the "safe side" that enables us to avoid any awkward or inconvenient involvement. If we claim to be Jesus' disciples, we cannot use the excuse of preserving our personal safety or our sense of moral outrage to justify walking away like the priest and Levite. The Good Samaritan is the prototype of Gospel charity, the embodiment of the Gospel vision of humanity as a community of everyone - male and female, rich and poor, able and challenged, cool and nerdy - sharing the same sacred dignity of being sons and daughters of the God of all that is good. Everyone is my neighbor.

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

THE COMMAND AND THE WAY OF LOVE

For the vast majority of people, there is no question about whether we should love. Of course we should. The more pressing question, and the one raised by the Word of God is: How shall we love?

Adults: What situations or circumstances have summoned me to compassion and taught me the practical side of the commandment of love?

Children: How can I love other people as God loves them?

A Family Perspective: Families rely on selfless love. Parents show love for their children not just when it's convenient, but whenever their children's needs must be met. Imagine if the members of a family were concerned only with their own needs. How quickly things would fall apart! In the story of the Good Samaritan, we learn about someone who went out of his way to care for the needs of another. He recognized the victim as his brother and accepted responsibility for him. As a family, talk about the responsibilities of each member of the family. Share how you, as parents, care for the needs of everyone in the family even when it's inconvenient. Ask your children to share times when they did chores and helped the family even when it was not convenient. Talk about how the Samaritan went out of his way to care for the needs of the victim. Make a commitment as a family to follow the example of the Good Samaritan. Explain that the more you learn to accept responsibility for each other's needs at home, the more you'll be able to accept responsibility for the needs of others in the world.

IT’S ALL ABOUT SERVING!

WE ARE CALLED TO SERVE AS JESUS DID

As catechists, we teach primarily because we have experienced God’s love in our lives, and, as a result of that experience, we seek to share that love with our students. Please prayerfully consider answering God’s call to serve and inquire about becoming a catechist by contacting Linda in the Religious Education office at [email protected] or call 973-267-5638. Our particular needs are for classes that will meet in

2016-2017 on Sunday mornings, Sunday evenings, Mondays after-school, and for our Fridays, Faith and Family program which meets one Friday night per month.

WELCOME DEACON MARCIN KANAI

Bishop Serratelli ordained 11 diocesan seminarians to the transitional diaconate on May 14 in St. Peter the Apostle Church—the final step before they are called to the Sacrament of Holy Orders in 2017. Deacon Marcin Kania was one of the

twelve ordained and we are happy to welcome him to Assumption, where he will be working and residing until his ordination to the priesthood.

PATERSON DIOCESE MEN’S CONFERENCE

Bishop Arthur J. Serrartelli has announced the first Paterson Diocese Men's Conference, which will be held Saturday, October 15th at Saint Paul Inside the Walls from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm. The Conference is intended to enhance the

They will spend the week building a home in the Appalachian Mountains for a needy family under the supervision of Habitat for Humanity. Thank you for all of your support, as this trip would not have been possible if it were not for the generosity of our parish community. Please send prayers and wish us luck! We would also like to thank you for your support of

this the community of White Sulpher Springs and the surrounding area. As you may have heard or read in the news, there have been devastating floods in that region which have resulted in the destruction of many homes and businesses. Over the last week we have collected thousands of dollars in gift cards and cash (which we will use to buy gift cards) which will be distributed among those who have lost so much. Once again we are humbled and grateful for the generosity of the Assumption community. The youth group members are: Danny Bertram, Brian O'Neill, Olivia Perry, Tom

Quinn, Lauren Aloia, Julia Barone, Zach Baskin, Matthew Bopp, Justin Burke, Colin Burke, Matt Clarkin, Devon Colquhoun, Nicole Danielsen, Tommy Fennelly, Victoria Ferrara, Tommy Ferrara, Reed Gannon, Katie Gilfillan, Hugh Grennan, Michael Hillebrecht, Jade Jones, Fiona Keefe, Kelly Giammarino, Rachel Langenohl, Caelyn Mastracchio, Kaitin McLain, Megan Murphy, Mark O'Malley, Michaela Phelan, Lila Prevete, William Ramundo, Dan Reidy, Brendan Rochelle, Alyssa Romano, Emily Rusen, Chelsea Simao, Makenzie Siverson, Emma Wong. FINANCIAL BLESSINGS

Assumption is a Tithing Parish

The collection total for the weekend of July 2/3 was $18,720. The collection for this weekend last year was $15,486.

Pastor’s Note: Your wonderful generosity in our weekly collection enables us to accomplish the care of souls entrusted to our parish by the Lord. We proclaim the Risen Lord and God's mercy to all with your support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

BLACK AND INDIAN MISSION COLLECTION

Dear Friends in Christ, This month, parishes are asked to take up a

combined collection for three worthy causes: the Catholic Communications Campaign, Catholic University and the Black and Indian Missions. The work of the Catholic Communications Campaign

was on full display during Pope Francis' visit to the United States. Catholic Communications Campaign funding enabled live streaming of the various events and was involved in the massive social media effort. There is so much good done through the Catholic Church and your support helps make it possible to share our story worldwide. As the national university of the Catholic Church in

the United States, Catholic University plays a vital role in the American landscape where students receive an education rich in Catholic thought and tradition. Such an understanding of our faith, especially for our young people, is more important today than ever. Your support of this collection helps with financial aid so that it can be a viable option for students who would not otherwise be able to attend. The Black and Indian Mission Collection is all about

evangelization. Established in 1884, it continues to promote the faith to people in remote parts of the United States as well as in impoverished inner-cities. Your support makes provides pastoral ministry, Catholic education and religious education programs in places where funds are lacking but the needs are great. Please be as generous as possible when this special combined collection is taken in your Parish.

HELP CATHOIC CHARITIES

HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER

The next few week-ends and weeks might be a good time to clear out drawers and closets of old clothes and footwear. Many of you will no doubt be taking advantage of the many July 4 sales that will be going on in the malls. So to make room for your purchases why not clean out your closets to benefit others? There are two ways to donate. Clothes that are

brought to the Catholic Charities clothes boxes here and around the Diocese are sold, and the monies gained from those sales are used to support Catholic Charities and their many outreach programs. Approximately $16,000 was earned in May through your generous donations. If you have clothing that is in good shape but you no

longer have use for it, consider bringing it to the Fr. English Center, (435 Main Street Paterson, New Jersey 07501, 973-279-7100) where it will be distributed directly to those who need it most right here in our diocese. To find out more about these programs and others

including the vehicle donation program, call Catholic Charities at 973- 406-1104. WOMEN’S CORNERSTONE FUNDRAISER

The Assumption Women's Cornerstone ministry is holding a fundraiser through Pampered Chef, who will generously donate a portion of their proceeds to our ministry. Please consider purchasing an item. Ordering easy through the website and you can have the items shipped directly to your home if you prefer. The funds raised will provide scholarships for women who cannot pay to attend the Retreat themselves, as well as help provide operating costs to run the Retreat. Thank you for your support. https://pamperedchef.com/go/Cornerstone

HOST FAMILIES FOR

AFS EXCHANGE STUDENTS SOUGHT

AFS-NJ is always looking for supportive host families. By hosting an AFS Exchange Student, you and your family will help build bridges of intercultural understanding at home and abroad while connecting with an outstanding young person.

Host families provide a bed and meals, share their daily lives with students, and help guide and support them as they would their own children. Students come with full medical insurance and personal spending money. Families don't need to have school-aged children living at home. Families and their hosted students receive ongoing support from AFS staff and experienced local volunteers.

For more information, please contact Alison Colaluca, AFS-NJ Volunteer Hosting Coordinator at 973-985-3583, or email her at [email protected].
