The Junior and Senior Dance groups looked wonderful and danced beautifully. The Junior Choir also performed wonderfully – this was their first performance this year and I was very proud of them. Many thanks to all parents who came to the shopping centre to support our students – I know you were also very proud! Congratulations to Ms Paulic, Mrs Thurling and Miss Bartlett on all your hard work – the children’s faces shone! Continuing our Success on the Sporting Field Well done to all our competitors at our Primary Athletics Carnival – you are all champions! I was very impressed with your excellent behaviour and “have a go” attitude – the ability to try hard and have a go at everything is such a great skill to learn for the rest of your life. I am extremely proud of you all! Days like these do not happen by chance – we have many people to thank: Firstly many thanks to Mrs Camilleri and Miss Grace for your organisation of this excellent day. Thank you also to the teachers and parent helpers who ran events so well... especially our wonderful teachers who came early to help set up. Also – huge thanks to the high school students from both St Clair HS and Erskine Park HS who helped with all the events – you were a wonderful help…and it was lovely to see many of our ex-students helping on the day. Sydney West Girls and Boys Touch Teams Last week Tayleah Pasili, Jada Taylor and Ashton Howat all played in the State Competition for Touch Football at the wonderfully frosty Wagga Wagga. They played exceptionally well and are a credit to our school and our area. The Girls team came 5 th out of 24 teams and the Boys team came 6 th out of 24 teams – well done! The Athletics Carnival for 2017 was held at Blair Oval on Tuesday 25th July. In this Newsletter we
would like to present some interesting recounts written by our senior students in Years 5 and 6. If
you did not attend the carnival, I am sure that the children’s writing will tell you lots about what
happened there.

The Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday, 25th
July at 9.30am the Athletics Carnival started. Children were transported by bus or car to
get there. If your child wanted to do the 800m race they had to be there before 8.30am because it started at
8.30am. The students would have to travel with their parents. All children from Years 3-6 and those who
turned eight years old in Year 2 were invited to come and enjoy the Athletics Carnival. The activities that
were held at the carnival were shot put, high jump, long jump, discus and the 100m, 200m and 800m races.
As the carnival was just starting Mrs McInally called out the age groups for boys and girls. The groups were
8 year old boys, 8 year old girls and so on up to the 12 year old boys and girls. As everyone went to their
events, the 11 year old boys and girls were at shot put. We all had a lot of fun at shot put. Next we went to
the 100m and 200m races. All boys and girls were amazing at it.
Then it was recess. After recess everybody went to their next event. All girls and boys had a go and did
well. Next we went to long jump. It was very weird because I got a lot of sand in my shoes. Then it was
lunch.
We went to our next event which was high jump. All the girls and boys jumped very high and it looked
really easy. Since I was out in the second round, I went home with my mum.
The Athletics Carnival was a lot of fun and enjoyable for everyone. The children who were the best in each
event would go on to the District Carnival. I hope that everyone who went to the District Carnival will have
a great time and cheer for everyone there. I wish that everyone who went to the Athletics Carnival were
happy and enjoyed it.

The Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday 25 July I was amazingly excited as it was a very special day. It was the day of the Athletics
Carnival!
Everyone in Years 3-6 was invited to come along to have a fun day in the sun at the Athletics Carnival.
Students from Year 2 who turned 8 years old could also participate. Some students went on the bus and
others went with their parents. The fun events that we did were the 100m and 200m sprints, long jump, high
jump, shot put and discus. The 800m race was optional.
I, Koray had a fantastic day. My first event was discus. It was incredible! I was going up against some tough
competition. One of the students I went up against was amazing. He went to the Regionals three times in a
row and did a great job. The student will be representing our school in the District Carnival.
Now it was time for my favourite events, the 100m and 200m sprints. I went into the fastest heat for both
and did a fantastic job. If you like the sand you’ll like this event. Get ready for long jump! I didn’t do as well
but at least I gave it a go.
Are you a high jumper? If so, you had better get ready for high jump. I did extremely well in high jump. I
almost made it to the District Carnival. I made it into the fifth round. I got out at the 1.15m jump and it was
really fun. Last but not least it was time for shot put. It was a lot of fun throwing the metal ball as far as I
could.
Everyone did exceptionally well and I am proud of everyone who participated in the Athletics Carnival for
trying their best no matter how well or badly they did.

Athletics Carnival
I got to the Athletics Carnival by car. The carnival was held at Blair Oval on 25.07.2017.
Most of the students from Years 3-6 came and some students from Year 2 took part as well. We all had lots
of fun. Some of the events at the carnival were the 800m, 200m and 100m races and shot put, discus, long
jump and high jump. We completed in our age groups.
During the carnival we sat in our house coloured teams. We also sat with our parents during recess and
lunch and they came around with us to some of our events. The help that the parents gave at the events and
with erecting the gazebos was much appreciated by the other students and me.
The easiest activity was long jump and the hardest was high jump because it was hard to get over the bar. I
am in the McKay team and I hope we won the carnival but we don’t find out until Mr Blanch holds the
sports assembly. I wish Jackson, Gasnier and Newcombe very good luck now and in the future.

The 2017 Athletics Carnival
The 2017 Athletics Carnival was on Tuesday 25th
July at Blair Oval, St Marys for Years 3-6 and Year 2
students who are eight years old.
I got to school and went on the bus to the Athletics Carnival. When I got there, I sat in the area for my house
colour. Gasnier is the red team at our school.
After I sat there with my friends, I participated in high jump. High jump was very hard but fun when people
encouraged me. Sadly, I did not make it to the next round. After high jump, I did shot put which was better.
I came second in my group. Then I did discus. I did the 100m race and came 5th. In the 200m race, I came
third. Then I did long jump and got out on my second turn.
Finally, my mom and baby brother took me home. I had a wonderful day and earned a lot of points for my
house team. I hope you liked the day.

2017 Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday 25th
July, I went to the 2017 Athletics Carnival. My classmates and I went to Blair Oval by bus.
I tried different types of Olympic sports. I was ready for the events because my class and I were practising
with Mrs Camilleri for this day.
Our first activity on the day was the 800 metres race which I didn’t attend although I really liked watching. I
still think it is a bit more than I am use to. Next all the other 11 year old boys and I did shot put and I tried
my best to get to the top 2 to go to the District Carnival but it wasn’t enough. The third sport we did was
discus. Sadly, I did not get a position in the top 5. Next we tried 100m and 200m races. I think I did my best
effort.
The last two sports we did were long jump and high jump. Even though I did not gain a top position in these
two events, I still had an amazing time at the 2017 Athletics Carnival.

2017 Athletics Carnival
Our 2017 Athletics Carnival was an enjoyable day where students got to participate in fun activities. There
were many activities such as shot put, discus, long jump, high jump and running events. We got to practise
some of these events at school with a wonderful teacher, Mrs Camilleri.
One of the events was shot put and we had our helpful teacher Mr Wilkinson demonstrating how to throw
the metal ball. The ball was really heavy but we still made an effort to throw it. For discus, you had to throw
it through the air and try and keep it in between the lines. Otherwise, it would have been a foul. In high jump
you had to run in a curve and leap over the bar without knocking it down. For long jump, you had to run and
jump off a sand box into the sand and go as far as you could. Lastly we had our running events. We had to
run 100m and 200m and try to go as fast as we could. That day a record was broken by Billy Higgins. The
team with the most points won the carnival. On the day we also had captains and vice captains from each
house who lead the cheering to earn house points.
Thank you teachers for helping us on the day. I hope that everyone tried their best and congratulate everyone
who made it to the next round.

Athletics Carnival
Two weeks ago, students from Clairgate Public School participated in the 2017 Athletics Carnival. The
2017 Athletics Carnival was held at Blair Oval, St Marys on Tuesday 25th
July.
Most students from Clairgate Public School participated in six or more events. The events were shot put,
discus, long jump, high jump and the 100m and 200m sprints. Some students even took part in the 800m
race.
Students who were present at the carnival represented their house teams which would have been Jackson for
yellow, McKay for green, Newcombe for blue and Gasnier for red. At the carnival some students broke the
school record. One of these people was Billy Higgins. He broke the high jump record. Congrats Billy!
We would like to acknowledge the organisers of this event. All of the students are thankful to Mrs Camilleri
and Miss Grace the wonderful, excellent and magnificent teachers who organised the Athletics Carnival.
They’re one of a kind. We would also like to say a big thank you to all of the parents and the high school
students for helping out at the carnival. On the whole the students from Clairgate Public School behaved
excellently at the carnival.

TOP STEPS – Losing your Marbles
STEM activities encourage students to become problem solvers through Problem Based Learning (PBL). The teacher is the facilitator during these fun learning activities and provides basic facts and information that will assist students during their STEM challenge. The STEM challenge is then set for the students with a time limit and off they go!! The teacher in involved only by observing and asking open questions (not providing answers) to encourage the development of the project by the students.
During the TOP STEPS workshop at Clairgate, 15 amazing students from Stage 1 were nominated to work in teams and complete various STEM challenges. STEM challenges included:
· the design and construction of a challenging LEGO marble maze,
· compete against other teams by building the tallest tower made out of newspaper that can balance a basketball at the very top,
· build two catapults, one from popsicle sticks and the other out of LEGO and launch loads of marshmallows and pom poms to hit a target.
Students were fully engaged throughout the workshop and came up with some very creative designs as they collaborated, negotiated and used the methods of trial and error to accomplish each challenge. They were required to fill out an evaluation form at the end of each project explaining what they found challenging and what they would do different next time. Upon completing the workshop students were awarded a certificate of completion for all their efforts. They even went home with their own catapult kit to extend their STEM challenge with friends and family. It was such a pleasure to be in a room full of thinkers, who didn’t give up but kept persevering to accomplish each challenge given and proving that creativity is intelligence having fun…whilst losing your marbles.

Date: 19 August Event name: What the shape of galaxies reveals about their upbringing – NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK Event details: Dr Caroline Foster The nature of astronomical distances is such that even our nearest neighbouring galaxy is too far to explore by probe. So, much like shadow puppetry, astronomers can only see galaxies in projection on the celestial sphere. Since distinct shapes project identically in 2D, measuring the true 3D (or intrinsic) shape of galaxies is an easy problem to pose, but a challenging one to solve. After 9 decades of effort, astronomers are finally making some headway thanks to a new technology called "multiplex integral field spectroscopy". I will briefly present this new technology and outline the role that Australian researchers have played in its development. I will also show how we are finally answering the 90 years old puzzle of the true shape of galaxies.
