Principal’s message……. This is the last newsletter from Delroy for Term 1. It has been a very busy and interesting term for staff and students. We have been involved in so many wonderful educational experiences as you will see in our current and past newsletters. Year 7 students travelled to Burrendong with Year 7 Adviser Ms Corina Wykes, Mr Doug Gordon and Deputy Principal Miss Kathryn Bermingham to participate in team building activities as part of building on team leadership and their progress into High School. We recently had a parent/teacher interview evening at Delroy, it was so good to see and meet with all the parents/carers once again. We received very positive feedback from those who attended and everyone enjoyed the relaxed and informative evening. Thank you to Mr Shane Groen and team for the excellent organisation, a very successful evening. We celebrated Harmony Day in Week 8, where our students and staff dressed in Orange to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and the importance of inclusive-ness. In the same week we also took part in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, a very important opportunity to focus on bullying and the changes we can all make to help create safer schools and communities for everyone. Thank you to Mrs Rachel Cody and team for making these days a great success. A big congratulations to Aunty Pat Doolan who has been presented with a major state education award. Aunty Pat received the Nanga Mai award recently in Sydney. Aunty Pat was nominated by Delroy for her enormous contributions to education and the school. The annual Nanga Mai awards are an initiative of Aboriginal Education and Communities to recognise and support the work of Aboriginal students, teachers and other departmental staff, as well as Aboriginal community members and schools that demonstrate excellence across diverse educational areas. We have a number of special opportunities coming up for our students in the next couple of weeks and students are expected to keep on task for the rest of the term. Our SRC students will march on ANZAC Day, Thursday 25 April, they will meet Mr Leigh Rice SRC Co-ordinator at the front of the RSL in Wingewarra Street, they will then march to the Cenotaph in Victoria Park. Students are reminded to be in full school uniform. Please contact Mr Rice if you require more details. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and a Happy, Relaxing and Enjoyable Holiday, travel safely and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 2. Mrs Debbie Head Principal

“One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals.” - Michelle Obama -

MUSIC NEWS…..

It’s all about Music

Over the course of this term, all workshops and rehearsals at-

tended have been in preparation for the Canberra Tour in Term

2. Students are full steam ahead with fundraising for this excur-

sion and life time musical opportunity.

Parent Welcome

‘Symphony Jubilate’ is coming to South Campus on the 9th

April. All Band and Ensemble students will be attending a work-

shop with them, followed by a performance starting at 1.30pm.

We would love as many parents, carers and friends to attend this

performance and see the Delroy and Dubbo College students’

amazing efforts and talents.

Moorambilla

Friday 22nd March, Moorambilla visited Delroy Campus and conducted a workshop/audition for our students. The students participated in percussion drum circles, dance/ movement activities and vocal exercises alongside students from South Campus. All students had a wonderful afternoon with Michelle Leonard, empowering our children to think big and dream wide. Look forward to hearing back from Moorambilla to see who gets in!! Miss Brooke Tonks CAPA/Music

SRC House Competitions The Dubbo College Delroy Campus SRC recently organised round one of house competitions as part of student voice lessons that occur once every three weeks. Students are given the opportunity to vote for the activities, fundraisers and initiatives they would like the SRC to run throughout the year. From this data, the SRC decided to implement one house competition per term to promote a positive school spirit and development skills in teamwork, problem solving and communication. During round one, each house was awarded points for competing in soccer, basketball, netball, team work and initiative challenges and a general knowledge quiz. It was great to see so many students participating in the activities in a friendly spirit. Mr Leigh Rice PDHPE/SRC Co-ordinator

STRIVE Class Scoop…. As we near the end of the term, students are heavily involved in their major assessments for all subject areas. During their English lessons, students have been developing a persuasive extended response based upon their novel study, and will complete their in-class task on Monday of Week 10. Our study of ‘Ancient China’ is nearing an end. Students were provided class time to complete their work booklet for their History assessment task which was submitted at the start of this week. I congratulate all students who made use of their own time to prepare their extended response. I am confident that their efforts will support them well in this task. In Week 10 students will complete their major Mathematics assessment for the term. This exam will cover material from the ‘Indices’ and ‘Fraction, Percentages and GST’ topics. Stu-dents are strongly encouraged to revise the work presented in class, learning the rules and formulas and practicing their application. Stu-dents have also been busy exploring the GST and have been asked to examine this on their household receipts. Our practical PDHPE lessons are helping students to develop their skills in readiness for next term’s athletics carnival. Their major theory assessment task was completed during their sport lesson and involved students in creating a health campaign to prevent the use of cannabis by teenagers. Students completed their Science practical examination recently and will begin their new topic ‘Reuse, Recycle’ next week. Attached are photos of students making models of molecules and compounds. Year 8 Strive also offers students some additional areas of study including Initiative Games and Class Project. Initiative Games gives students practical opportunities to develop their employability and collaborative skills while also developing their personal and social capabilities. Included with this article is a photo of students engaged in one of these activities. As always, I would like to thank Woolworths

Delroy Park for their continued support of the Year 8 Strive class in the fortnightly prepara-

tion of food for Homework Centre. Ms Rachel Cody

Year 7 Strive We have had a wonderful start to the year and been busy learning new skills and information. Students in Science have enjoyed being in the Lab doing the practical components to our unit and learning about the safety required when in the lab. In HSIE we have been learning about “Ancient Egypt” and have been transported to a different time learning about Pharaohs and the Pyramids. There will be a Maths assessment next week for end of term so it is encouraged to revise especially our Cornell notes. For English we are focusing on a short story by Paul Jennings and enjoyed the poetry unit and being able to identify literary techniques used in each poem. We are looking forward to the holidays and hope you all stay safe and enjoy the break.

NO ELECTIVE SUBJECT FEES….. The finance team has made the decision this year not to charge any elective fees for students in Years 9 and 10. We still invite parents and carers to contribute to resourcing the school by paying the voluntary contribution fee of $120 per student or $200 per family (go to the Dubbo College web page, click on the "make a payment" tab and select Delroy Campus). The decision not to charge for electives was made after much thoughtful consideration, and was based on our philosophy that elec-tives should be accessible to all our students as we not do want fees to be a barrier to students pursuing their areas of special interest. The school will fund electives from RAM Equity. Mrs Debbie Head Principal

2019 BANGARRA

DANCE WORKSHOP On Wednesday the 20th of March, ten Delroy Campus students travelled to Welling-ton High School to take part in the first stage of Bangarra’s School Spectacular trials. The day was enjoyed by all students as they represented Delroy admirably, remaining focused during a rigorous four and a half hour workshop. The students were put through their paces and it was a pleasure to witness them succeed in performing difficult dance routines. A special mention to Kyle Daley who was

selected in Bangarra’s next round of work-shops, for a second year running. Well done

Kyle, keep working hard and representing Delroy with pride.

Girls Day Out Girls from Years 9 and 10 attended Girls Day Out organised by Girls Academy, TAFE Opportunity Hub and Headspace. The girls headed out to the zoo and participated in workshops about sexual and

women’s heath issues, domestic violence, consent and rights, healthy relationships and self-care and mindfulness. The girls were also treated to henna tattooing, pamper sessions, zoo animal interaction,

yoga and Aboriginal culture activities. Some of our mums and nans joined us for lunch and stayed for the afternoon activities. It was a really successful and fun day. Ms Emily Nettle Girls Academy

Last week all of the Year 10 students were in the 'Get Real' lessons. The learning intention was to think about their plans for life after school. Students engaged in an activity which asked them to think about where they would be in three years time. Students were given a list of options such as full time employment, living independently, being back at school, university or in an apprenticeship and asked to rank themselves on how likely they would be in some of these activities. There were some positive discussions in all of the classes about getting a driver's licence, part-time work, voluntary work at home and in the community, superannuation and preparing for a life and responsibili-ties at school and beyond. It was reinforced to students to attend all their classes, work in each class with sustained effort and due diligence as well as completing all set class assignments to prepare for their ROSA. The lessons were to prepare students for the visit to the Senior Campus hall for the 'Get Real' Assembly where the students will take the following pledge:

I willingly commit myself to participate in the Get Real Program and undertake that by my 17th birthday, I will:

Be in full-time education in school or TAFE

or Be undertaking industry training

or Be in full-time employment

Year 10 students will sign the board to mark their commitment.

YEAR 7 BURRENDONG EXCURSION On Monday 25 March 2019, fifty Year 7 students and three staff travelled to Burrendong to participate in team building activities as part of the team leadership and self esteem building aspect of Year 7’s start to high school. The students were guided through the safety require-ments for the sports of archery and fencing and then they participated in each activity. The students were faced with some interesting challenges such as, how to stop the bow from rubbing their elbows, how to direct the arrow into the target, how to put the fencing head-gear on to cover all parts of the face for protection during a fencing bout and how quick you have to be to defend yourself. Students and staff enjoyed a tasty lunch before tackling the second activity for their group. Students were commended on their behaviour and uniform by several of the Burrendong staff. A good day was had by all. Thank you to Ms Wykes, Mr Gordon and Miss Bermingham for supporting the students. Thank you to Langley’s bus driver for our transport.
