Principal’s message……. Delroy Campus has been very busy over the last few weeks of this term. We recently welcomed Year 7 parent/carers and new parent/carers to Delroy Campus with a BBQ and tour of the school. We also enjoyed the company of many proud parents/carers and friends to the Delroy Campus Student Representative Council Induction. It was a delight to see our students keen to enhance their leadership skills and help their fellow cohort at Delroy. We have also had many eager competitors in the Delroy Campus Swimming Carnival, the students and staff had a wonderful day, enjoying the great weather, competition and fun. The results of our swimming carnival will be published in our next newsletter. Well done to everyone on their achievements and participatiom. This year, Delroy will be fee-free. The drought has had a severe impact on our families and community, we will not be asking for elective fees. This is a commit-ment to social justice and will enable students to access an elective subject of interest, without costs being a barrier. This year the costs will be covered through the RAM equity budget, Resource Allocation Budget. I hope this helps a little and improve outcomes for your students. Our students involved in the Bangarra Dance Group and Circus students are currently auditioning for the Schools Spectacular, we are looking forward to hopefully, partici-pating again this year. Ms Jemima Hall, our Delroy Campus CAPA supervisor, was involved in the Schools Spectacular last year and also helping our students again this year. In February of this year, Ms Hall was presented with an Outstanding Beginning Teacher Award by the Professional Teachers’ Council, Visual Arts and Design Educators Association (NSW). Ms Hall has an enthusiastic and strong commitment to her students and sub-ject. Congratulations, Jemima. Coronavirus (COVID-19) Maintaining good health hygiene at school Remind your children and family that you can protect against infection by practising good hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene. Here are some tips everyone can follow:

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue

Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards with soap and water (for at least 20 seconds), or use hand sanitiser.

Wash your hands regularly (minimum 20 seconds), after using the toilet, and before eating.

On Monday 10 February all Year 7 students, selected Support Students and the Year 9/10 Music Elective students participated in a Drumbeat Workshop with myself and Mr Paul Woodhead. The students attended the workshop for an hour learning a variety of different rhythms and music concepts. Body percussion was also embedded into the workshop, as well as fun games and drum rumbles to keep the students engaged. All students gave wonderful feedback, highly enjoying the opportunity. Thank you to Mr Paul Woodhead for assisting/running the day, and all other teachers who attended and involved themselves in the amazing experience. Miss Brooke Tonks Music Teacher

STRIVE Class Scoop…. I am very impressed with how students have settled into the Year 8 Strive class and the new school year. Students are being proactive in clarifying misunderstandings, and their new collaborative groups have generated focused and insightful discussions. Their capacity to work collectively is also a credit to this group of students, especially when considering that they have only been together as a class for five weeks! In English students are exploring the big question ‘Is it ever right to do what is wrong?’ through a close study of the novel Parvana. Students will complete an in-class assessment task involving a critical read and then use the knowledge gained from the reading and their understanding of the novel to complete an extended response. Students received a copy of this task this week and will be provided with four lessons to complete this task in class time during Week 7 and 8. The final task submission is due at the conclusion of their second English lesson on 16/3/20. Students have been learning about ‘Ancient China’ in History and are currently developing their understanding of the role of the first emperor of China. This will lend itself to their assessment task, also in Week 8, in which students have to complete a critical reading about Qin Shi Huangdi, synthesise this information through the creation of a 6-tab foldable, which can then be used to answer (extended response) Was Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi a Villain or Visionary? While students will have class time to work on this task, they are strongly encouraged to also prepare for it in their own time. We are about to finish our first topic of study ‘Algebra and Indices’ in Mathematics and will be moving on to ‘Equations’ afterwards. To boost students confidence and speed in these topics, it is essential that they learn their times tables. All students have been provided with a laminated times tables chart to take home. In PDHPE students are exploring how to be an upstander. Students will receive a critical read to take home and complete, which will assist in answering a range of questions around the subject of bullying during their in-class task in Week 8. Students’ practical assess-ment is ongoing and is based on their performance and approach in the practical lessons. Our Science topic is centred around ‘Elements, Compounds and Mixtures’. Students have explored the differences between metals and non-metals, using conductivity as one of the key indicators. They will complete a practical exam for assessment during their Science lesson in Week 7. Attached are photos of students preparing and delivering afternoon tea for Macquarie Home Stay. This is a new initiative this year and is a continuation of our partnership with Woolworths Delroy Park. Mrs Rachel Cody – Year 8 STRIVE Teacher

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING - PBL Delroy’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is alive and well and the influence of PBL on our school community is growing. The 29th January saw above 160 Year 7 students join the Delroy Family. A big welcome to them all. PBL is a system of learning that rewards positive behaviours in preference to focussing on the negative actions of the students. Most of our new school community members have had experience with PBL while at primary school, so, have a fair understanding of its implications. Now as the new kids on the block, these students are able to embrace the Delroy values. These values are based on the name of our school, DELROY. These values being D - do your best, E - having equipment for learning, L - learning, R - respect for self, others and property, O - opportunities to grow and learn, Y - your school, be proud to be a member. It has been gratifying to experience the positive engagement of the year 7’s with these ideals. Congratulations to Year 7 for their commitment to learning through acknowledgement of their positive behaviours and dedication to being a part of a very pleasing approach to learning and our Delroy community. Mrs Fiona Riley PBL

Careers Year 10 students are already taking the opportunity to go on work experience with one student out this week at Dubbo Public School. Work experience at Delroy is student driven and overseen by the Careers Adviser. Work experience has many advantages to students who are work ready. Advantages include, career exploration, builds confidence and provides prior experience which can be listed on student resumes. Year 10 will start their interviews next week with a Careers Adviser. These interviews will gauge what students are thinking in terms of their Career options and record work, volunteer or paid that students may be involved in. Unique Student Identifier - The Careers Adviser at Delroy can assist students in creating a USI for themselves. Students need a copy of their birth certificate or medicare card, a personal email address and a mobile phone number that can be used to retrieve forgotten pass-words. All students who are intending to do a White Card Training, First Aid Certificates, TAFE Courses or VET Subjects at school or out of school will be required to have a USI. Mrs McConnell’s MAUBOY Visual Art Class:

This term, MAUBOY are completing portraits of a local Rural Fire Service (RFS) Fire Fighter.

They recently held interviews with three RFS Firefighters (Colby, Carole and Paul) in their Art classroom. From these interviews, the students were able to ask the firefighters questions about their role in

the RFS, time spent fighting fires and other personal questions so that they can implement the personalities of the firefighters into their

portrait artworks.

In time, it is possible the artworks may be auctioned off and the money raised will be donated to the local RFS as a thank you from Dubbo College Delroy Campus and the MAUBOY students. Below are a few photos of the students dressing up in the RFS uniforms and being educated on bushfires by RFS Firefighter Mr Paul Woodhead.

Updated information about COVID-19 (formerly referred to Novel Coronavirus) for schools to consider using when communicating with parents & caregivers

Dear parent or caregiver, The NSW Department of Education is working closely with the NSW Ministry of Health in response to the unfolding international COVID-19 (formerly referred to as Novel Coronavirus) situation. Further travel restriction Effective 1 March 2020 the Federal Government has issued a travel ban on foreigners coming to Australia from Iran. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents coming from Iran will be al-lowed entry to Australia, and from 1 March they are required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days after departing Iran consistent with the restrictions for those entering from China. Additionally, Australians have been advised NOT to travel to Iran. Updated advice from the NSW Government for parents and affected staff regarding COVID -19 is: Any student or staff member who has been in, or transited through, mainland China (not just

Hubei province) or has been in Iran is excluded from work, school or child care services for 14 days from the date they left mainland China or Iran (as the COVID-19 incubation period can be as long as two weeks).

Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return. Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last

contact with the confirmed case. Students and staff who have returned to Australia from mainland China or Iran more than

14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school. The NSW Ministry of Health has processes to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the NSW Ministry of Health. Consistent with current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with the NSW Department of Education’s current practice, if any student becomes unwell, the school will implement infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropriate. Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and spreading respiratory infections. Parents and caregivers are asked to promote good hygiene, in-cluding handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease. The NSW Ministry of Health has advice and resources about COVID-19 in English and Chinese. The NSW Department of Education will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation and provide parents and caregivers with updated information about the virus.
