Principal’s MessageWelcome to the final newsletter for Term 2. As we finish Semester One, Half Yearly reports will be sent to parents on Friday 5 July through the Parent Portal. If you have any questions after reading your child’s report, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

I have had parents inquire in regards to homework for their child and would like to convey the following information after discussion with Head Teachers. Students have access to Mathletics, Word Flyers and Assessment Task Booklets, which are issued each term so that students can commence work on tasks early. In the more practical subjects, students have research, rehearsing and design folio work. Many teachers assign homework independent of these activities. If you have any concerns in regards to homework then in the first instance you are encouraged to contact the classroom teacher of that subject.

Due to the increasing student enrolments in Year 9, we have created an additional class in this year group from the commencement of Term 3. This will require changes to some classes and teacher allocation; however, it will facilitate smaller class sizes and the establishment of an additional elective class.

I wish all students and staff an enjoyable break with their family and friends and look forward to working with you again in Term 3.

Welcome to the end of Term 2. Thank you to the all of the students who participate in Library activities during recess and lunch. Numerous puzzles have been completed, chess games played, LEGO masterpieces built and books borrowed. Tech Free Tuesdays are increasing in popularity. A shout out to the gamers who quite happily play Trouble, card games and air hockey when computers are not available.

Overdue notices have been sent to students’ school email accounts. If the book is missing, please let Library staff know so that our records can be updated. Please have a thorough look at home during the break. If an item has a Library barcode, please return it. Items that have been weeded from the collection will have been marked accordingly.

Last Friday, our Library was used for the Elders’ morning tea and lunch. Thank you to Mrs Higgins for arranging the bundles of bottlebrush for the tables and circulation desk. The greenery adds a touch of elegance to our busy space.

Students may borrow up to 10 books. Quick Reads continue to be popular. More titles will be added to this area soon. Requests are always welcome.

South Campus Boccia Team travelled to Canobolas Technology High School last week to compete in the Western Regional Boccia Championship. Students involved were:Chantelle Smith Yr 7Reece Forrester Yr 7Kate Taylor Yr8 Vice CaptainBroc Brimley Yr 8Emily Leece Yr 8 Hunter Robertson Yr 10 Captain

With many new members in the 2019 team, we spent weeks training for the event, which saw the players’ skills develop significantly during these sessions and natural leaders emerge. On the day our team was very competitive and the team did everything asked of them. Our Captain Hunter Robertson and Vice Captain Kate Taylor showed their leadership qualities on and off the field. They were able to assess the game and direct their team mates to get the most out of them with their exemplar sportsmanship. Unfortunately, the competition was too strong on the day and we lost both our games. The students

were outstanding ambassadors for our school reflecting our C.A.R.E.S mantra: Courtesy-polite to each other, the other schools’ staff and students, Achievement-in the way they conducted themselves and showing growth in their skills from effort and commitment, Respect for equipment and each other and Safety in the way they conducted themselves to, from and at Canobolas High School.Special thanks to all the students who tried out for the team and in particular Aaron Quince who trained with the team and was able to share his experience and skills with his team mates.

I would like to wish our Captain Hunter Robertson all the best as she moves to Senior Campus in 2020. Hunter has been a member of the team for the last four years in which our team has made the State finals twice and were runners up in 2016. At the conclusion of the day Hunter was invited by the organisers to speak about her experiences over the past four years. Hunter’s lasting memories were of fun and friendship generously mixed with

the excitement of competing in an inclusive sport. Ms Hockey and I would personally like to thank Hunter for her commitment to the team and wish her all the best in Year 11 at Senior Campus. We look forward to the opportunity to participate again in 2020 where I expect the experience gained from this event will manifest into success.

Thank you to Clontarf for supplying a bus, Rebecca Hanrahan, DEC Sports for coordinating the competition and Peter and Sue from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance who conducted the event and continue to inspire the children to excel.

Yours with pride,Mr Brandon and Ms Hockey

SRC Leadership CampOn Monday 20 May, a group of students from our SRC attended a 5 day SRC leadership camp in Wagga Wagga. The aim of the camp was to connect with other

schools across the NSW region and gather ideas to improve our very own SRC here at south. We participated in a lot of bonding activities to help us branch out of our comfort zone and meet new people, as well as brainstorming with the students from the other schools on ways to make our school environment better. Many great ideas were brought to the table,

such as surveys to improve the communication within the school, anti-bullying days, life skill courses and many more. We as an SRC hope to be implementing these ideas into our school very soon, so stay tuned!

Reconciliation ActivitiesOn Friday 28 June the whole school participated in our school’s Reconciliation Walk.

Girls from Girls Academy helped out on the day with the announcements as well as the Welcome to Country and some of the girls were involved in dancing. The students divided into different year groups and walked along and around the school. The girls were organised into rotation groups which consisted of playing a range of games. We also had a helping hand cooking Johnny Cakes.

• Homework Centre • Training sessions in an array of sports and fit-

ness activities.• Lunch and recess activities

The Real GameOn Tuesday 11 June, six Yr 10 Girls Academy students attended The Real Game at the Dubbo RSL along with four other Academies in the region. The Real Game is an interactive program where stu-dents assume roles and explore aspects of adult life. Students create wish lists of things they would like as adults. After randomly assigned life/work roles, they ex-perience a “reality check” as they balance their month-ly budgets, cope with unexpected chance events, and explore the balance between work and the rest of their lives.Students create an imaginary community, and plan group holidays taking into account individual budgets and work schedules. As their role characters are made redundant, they learn how to adapt to change and unexpected situations, and use their transferable skills to enable them to create new work opportunities.

Term 3

Two weeks ago, four students from Dubbo College South Campus competed in the Uluru Deadly Runners Relay at the National Deadly Fun Run Championships (NDFRC). This is an annual event held at Yulara Northern Territory, a short distance from Australia’s most iconic Indigenous landmark – Uluru. The NDFRC is Australia’s largest Indigenous running event and brings together representatives from Indigenous communities across the country.Participants travelled to Uluru for a 12km relay run around the base of the rock with their fellow

community representatives. Students Michael Ross, Tyrone Tattersall, Shanique Darlington and Janaya Rose were selected to represent the community in the relay team. The team competed against people from every state and territory in Australia with some fierce competition amongst them.Students also presented a message stick to the Traditional Owners. The students all ran incredibly well, with the team taking out the win by a comfortable margin. Congratulations to everyone involvedPictured bottom left photo is Michael Ross, Tyrone Tattersall, Jaymaree Milgate, Kori West, Shanique Darlington and Janaya Ross.
