Welcome to the last newsletter for 2018. This term we have focussed on celebrating the many accomplishments and achievements of our students. The recent Presentation Evening was a truly spectacular event, with over 200 students being presented with academic,

commitment to learning and sporting achievement awards. Congratulations to the Year 7-10 award recipients. It was wonderful to see the students accepting them with such pride.

This was also an occasion to reflect on the service and achievements of two of long-standing members of the Dubbo College family. Mrs Catherine Brown, who

began her career fifty years ago and inspired many students through her love of literature and Mr Ross Gorrie, who has been a key leader in the College for many years and Principal at South for the last four. Mr Gorrie has indicated his intention to retire in 2019. We wish them both well in their retirement.

I would personally like to thank our special guests who took time to acknowledge the successes of our students. Thank you to Ms Adelia Fuller, Mrs Stacey Exner, Mr Andrew Jones, Mrs Debbie Head, Mrs Sharon Murray, Ms Gail Cluff, Mrs Therese Garnsey, Mr Albi and Mr Reece Mastellotto, Mrs Lisa Northhill, Mr Tim Emerton and Aunty Pat Doolan.

Thank you also to the families, carers and staff who came along to celebrate the success of our students.

I would like to formally congratulate Harrison Kater of Year 9. Harrison represented the Western Region in the Yrs 9/10 Debating Competition and became part of the State Runners-Up Team. This is a great achievement congratulations Harrison.

Our students have also been privileged to attend “The Spirit of the Planet Festival” at the Dubbo Showground. This proved to be an enlightening experience full of colour, dance and activities. All students who attended were invited to take part in dance, as well dart blowing.

The annual Year 7 excursion to “The Great Aussie Bush Camp” near Tea Gardens was also well attended by 41 students. Their behaviour was exceptional. Over the three days they participated keenly in activities such as kayaking, ropes courses, beach activities, Disco and numerous fun games. Thank you to Mrs McLachlan for her organisation and Mr Fitzpatrick, Ms Hill and Mr Yap for supervising for the three days.

This week, the Year 10 transition program to Senior Campus was a great success. Many thanks to the staff who supervised students as they gained insight into the environment of senior school. Students met their 2019 teachers and came back inspired from the Eddie Woo presentation on Thursday.

Today, we farewelled our Year 10 students with an assembly where they were presented with their Year 10 Report, the 2018 Omnia and their completion certificate for Year 10. The day concluded with water activities on the back oval. We wish our Year 10 students every success in their future endeavours.

In preparation for 2019 our 2018 Year 6 students have attended mini lessons and an orientation day. Thank you to our Student Mentors for guiding our 2019 Year 7 cohort through their lessons and activities. We look forward to seeing Year 7 on Wednesday 30 January 2019.

Our annual school magazine Omnia is now available from the Administration Office at a cost of $25.00. Congratulations to Ms Deb Dawson and her team of enthusiastic helpers for another fantastic edition.

As the year draws to a close I would like to thank the school community for your support and the staff for their commitment to our school priorities in improving the learning outcomes of our students.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Keep safe and enjoy the holiday.

Ms S Foran

Ancient

History

ForumEarlier this year Mr Harding (a Science teacher) decided to start an Interest Group at South Campus to study, discover, handle and discuss Ancient Artefacts and Cultures.

Mr Harding had previously brought various artefacts to school (copper chisels, bronze axes, a Chinese bronze sword, meteorites etc.) to help illustrate and supplement points of interest in lessons he was presenting.

“Very few students have a chance to see ancient or rare artefacts, let alone touch them” said Mr Harding, “I believe in a hands-on approach to such things – unfortunately most museums disagree. The benefit to students’ increased interest

in many topic areas greatly out-weighs any potential damage to these ancient items”.

After generating some interest among the student and staff population, Mr Harding decided to instigate an Interest Group, this was also a way to thank the student body for accepting and welcoming him to the school community.

After some thought the name decided upon was the “Ancient History Forum” – a bit of a play on Roman history, which is one of Mr Harding’s collecting interests.

Since its inception this Interest Group has been a regular fixture of recess on Thursdays.

One of the regular activities this group undertakes is the cleaning of Ancient Roman Bronze Coins and their identification. Mr Harding has set up Coin Cleaning Kits and Information Booklets for the students to use. On some occasions there has been more

students in attendance than kits available. The students get to keep the coins that they clean. It is a “luck of the draw”, some coins are duds, and don’t clean well, but there have also been some great results, for those with the patience.

Other activities have included looking at various ancient bronzes, identifying fakes/reproductions from authentic items, looking at Family Trees and history, polishing amber – amber was highly prized in ancient times and looking at specific ancient cultures.

Two students that are very regular attendees of the Ancient History Forum are Courtney Russell (Yr 10) and Jack Williams (Yr 7). Court-ney was very involved and helpful with the instigation of the Ancient History Forum. Jack has regular-ly brought some of his own very interesting items to the Forum to share with everyone and start dis-cussions, which is what this group is all about.

Jack Williams polishing a piece of Baltic Amber and when polished the amber revealed a mass of termites

A Beautiful Coin of the Roman Emperor Constantius II from about 350 AD, which was carefully cleaned by Jack Williams.

Two Chinese Bronze Bells – the one on the Right is Authentic has a beautiful ring and is at least 2000 years old, the one on the left is most likely a modern fake – its ring is more of a thud! Also the pattern and types of corrosion were good indicators before the “Bell was Tolled!

Roseanna Morrish is a teacher at our school and for those of you who don’t know she is a Legend. Ms Morrish helps every student she can and takes time out of her day

to help with the Homework Club. Ms Morrish spends her free periods helping students.

Our Clontarf Team found out she needed a lawn mower and whipper snipper. The boys found a mower and whipper snipper and rebuilt then and serviced them.

This took a few sessions in the afternoons but they were finally able to present her with the finished product !!!!

Great work lads , thank you Rosie

Recently Year 9 Food Technology students designed and made birthday cakes as part of their assessment for “Food for Special Occasions”  unit. All students did an amazing job both baking

and decorating their cakes. They should be very proud of their achievements.
