1 NATIONAL WORLD SKILLS COMPETITION Hayley-Ann Smith represented NSW at the National World Skills VETiS Business Services competition in Sydney. She competed against students from all over Australia. Hayley-Ann was eligible to compete after she won the Regional Business Services competition in October 2017 with an impressive score of 98.5 / 100. During the competition Hayley-Ann had to complete office administration tasks based on a scenario where she was employed with a business as an Administration Assistant. Her tasks involved filing, producing flyers, mailing, letter writing (including mail merging and labelling) giving an office presentation on Work Health and Safety to fellow employees on Safety Data Sheets, preparing banking, invoicing, proof reading and preparing policy documents, answering phones and relaying messages. Hayley-Ann stated that the constant level of work and the number of tasks meant that she had to work hard on her time management skills as different tasks were due at particular times during each day. At the end of the competition World Skills hold a presentation ceremony to announce the winners in each category of competition. The presentation ceremony was held on June 5 and after competing in a highly competitive field Hayley-Ann placed 5th. This is an excellent result and demonstrates what students from Dubbo College can achieve if they are prepared to try out new opportunities that are made available to them. SENIOR RISE What’s on? PRINCIPALS REPORTAs we come to the conclusion of Term 2, we can reflect on another eventful term. The Senior Campus were the host of the WesternRegion Tertiary Day, University of Sydney Kick Start Program as well as The Western Region HSC Enrichment Days. These programs have allowed our year 12 students to access experts in the fields of HSC examinations as well as post school pathways. These programs have not only supported Senior Campus students but also students from across the Central and Far West to have same opportunities and exposure often only afforded to their peers in metropolitan areas. The Senior Campus has continued to work in partnership with Elevate Education with all students completing study skills seminars in examination preparation. This was done with the aim to ensure all students are best prepared for the Trial HSC Examinations that will commence on the August 13 next term as well as the Preliminary Exit Examinations that will take place from September 10.The Trial HSC Examinations are considered more difficult than the actual HSC examinations due to the reduced preparation time. With this in mind, we have ensured structures are in place to maximise student achievement and minimise stress and anxiety. Firstly, all Year 12 students will receive the Trial HSC timetable by the end of this Term. Along with the timetable students will receive an explicit study guide on how best to prepare for each of their examinations. Finally, our staff have committed to running Holiday Tutoring over both weeks of the July holidays. The timetable will accessible in the study guide. This booklet will also be emailed to all students and parents. With both the Astley Cup and Man of Steel College Production currently in full swing, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate and thank the staff and students involved in the running of these community events. We will be hosting Orange High School in the final round of Astley Cup on the 4th and 5th of July and encourage all community members to take part.

The Bindyi Club, the ex-students association of Dubbo High School and Dubbo College, has overseen the inauguration of an updated honour board at Dubbo College Senior Campus this week. The honour board includes the names of 42 returned service men and women who had attended either Dubbo High School, Delroy High School, Dubbo South High School or Dubbo College, and who had served in various theatres of war since World War 1.President of the Bindyi Club Jill McCann said the club had seen the need for the updated honour roll during the Centenary of Public Education held in Dubbo in 2017.“A member of the Bindyi Club, historian Patrick Bourke undertook some wide-ranging research to come up with the names of 42 former service men and women to add to the Dubbo College records. The names even includeda former school captainwho fought during WorldWar 1.”The inauguration of thenew honour board was attended by members of the Bindyi Club including Mrs McCann, members of the Dubbo sub-branch of the RSL including president Tom Gray,as well as students and staffof Dubbo College.

Dubbo College Year 12 extension music students recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop with outstanding Australian art music composer Elena Kats-Chernin and well-known pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska at the Macquarie Conservatorium in Dubbo. The students, Robin Hall, Tim Connor and Peter Harrison attended the workshop with their music teacher Lyndal Powderly.Mrs Powderly said the workshop was presented in a question and answer format so students could gain an understanding of how to create a great composition.“Elena then went through how simple melodic and rhythmic material can be expanded and developed through compositional techniques,” she said.“These techniques are devices such as rhythmic and melodic; repetition, inversion, retrograde, augmentation, diminution, sequences, textural layering, instrumentation, pitch range, unity and contrast.“Her presentation allowed students to feel confident with the compositions they have already created and how to tweak them to achieve a great result. “Mrs Powderly said there were many different processes used by composers. She said her students were given an amazing insight into the processes of a great Australian art music composer, who is at the forefront of music composition in Australia and around the world!
