Regulations for Lenten Sacrifice

The following regulations for Lenten sacrifice are based on the 1983 Code of Canon Law:

All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat for Catholics over 14.

Ash Wednesday (February 18) and Good Friday (April 3) are days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. Fasting means taking only one full meal and two smaller meals that, taken together, do not equal one full meal.

Throughout Lent, Catholics are especially encouraged to perform voluntary acts of penance.

Reading Group

Our book selection for the month of February is the novel The Friday Night Knitting Club. USA Today had this to say about it, “If you are looking for an inviting group of gals to spend a few winter evenings with, pull up your afghan and snuggle in with The Friday Night Knitting Club… It makes you yearn for yarn, even if you’re not a knitter.” I think we will have more than enough winter evenings to stay in and read this month! We will meet on February 25 at 2:30 pm in the McAuley to share on thoughts on this one. I have copies of the book in the McAuley if you would like to borrow one. Happy reading. Ellen Keough

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Then the fever left her and she waited on them." What a day for this woman! She had been confined to bed, burning with a fever, too sick to move around. Then, her son-in-law showed up with his brother, two friends, and a man with a growing reputation for working miracles. With no ceremony, this man came straight over to her, took her hand and helped her to her feet. There was no time to question Jesus' bold action because in an instant, the woman was healed. Whatever he had done had worked! We can imagine that the appearance of this group of guests at her house caused Simon's mother-in-law some distress; in her illness, she had been unable to offer them the hospitality so important in that culture. But as soon as the fever disappeared, she regained the freedom to properly welcome her visitors. No longer sick, she was able to serve. And that was exactly what she wanted to do. Without hesitation, she began to use her restored health to care for others. And soon enough, her hospitality was extended to new levels because "the whole town was gathered at the door" to see Jesus in action. How do we use our health? Do we think of it as a gift from God to be put at the service of others? Or do we think of good health as simply our own right? Today's virtuous woman teaches us about a kind of physical generosity. Recognizing that her health had been given to her as a gift, she in turn offered her strength, her ability to stand and walk and work, as a gift to others. What a beautiful way to understand the human body. Instead of focusing on how our bodies can serve us, may we follow the example of this woman who was so quick to attend to the needs of her family, her friends, and her neighbors.

Monthly Prayer

Heavenly Father, In this Valentine's Day month, we pray for the love of couples: That their love be nourished. That they grow in their love and patience. That they respect, listen and communicate to each other to strengthen their loving relationships. We ask that couples strive to sacrifice for each other and shun narcissistic behaviors. We also pray that they avoid verbal, emotional and physical abuse; continue to pursue their loving relationships; and keep prayer in their lives. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen

Please pray this prayer along with our Prayer Partners today and throughout this month. If you have a suggestion for prayer intention please let us know at [email protected]

National Marriage Week 2015

February 7-14

Marriage is a gift from God to Men, Women, Children and Society.

In marriage, a husband and wife form an exclusive and lifelong bond, forge a shared financial future, promise to take care of each other “in sickness and in health,” and provide a stable and loving home for any children they are blessed with. Marriage is the foundation of the family, which is the primary place where we all learn to love and be loved, to live in community with others, and to care for the most vulnerable (e.g. children, the elderly, the sick).
