On The Way
he Mass in Slowest Motion: The Roman Canon II
The next part of the Roman Canon is traditionally called “The Commemoration of the Living.” Which is curious. A commemoration is usually of the dead, not the living. In this context, however, it is a commemoration not because we are remembering the living but because we ask God Himself to do so.
Which is also curious. What does it mean for God to remember? Scripture has many passages about His remembering as well as prayers for Him to remember. We exhort one another to remember because we know that we can forget. But God cannot forget. So why should we tell Him to remember?
When we remember we make some person, event, or thing present to our minds. We might express it in a ceremony, but it really ends there – just a memory. For God to remember means that He makes His goodness to a person present and effective. When the priest prays, Remember, Lord, your servants, he is not asking God simply to reminisce or recall. It is not a plea for God to make them present to His mind (they never cease to be there) but to make His goodness present and effective to them.
After he speaks these words the priest is to pause, fold his hands in prayer, and call to mind the intention of the Mass and/or those for whom he intends to pray. That pause (which should be more than perfunctory) is an invitation for all in the congregation to call to mind their intentions.
Then the priest prays for the congregation itself: and [for] all gathered here, whose faith and devotion are known to you. This prayer contains a description of the congregation’s purpose for being at Mass. They are there to join with the priest in offering this sacrifice of praise. With him they offer it for themselves and all who are dear to them. They are there to pray for the redemption of their souls, in hope of health and well-being, and paying their homage to you, the eternal God, living and true.
So far, the Roman Canon has spoken of the Church universal (the Pope, local bishop, etc.) and has commemorated the Church’s living, particularly the congregation. Now the prayer looks upward, to the Church triumphant, to the saints in heaven.
This section is traditionally called the Communicantes, after its first word in Latin: In communion with those whose memory we venerate… These words describe the saints not just as inspiring figures but as living persons with whom we are in communion (communicantes). Although separated by time and space we are nevertheless united with them in prayer.
Especially in liturgical prayer. The book of Revelation describes heaven as a liturgy (cf. Rev 4 especially). The saints spend their eternity in worship of the triune God. What they do directly in heaven we do through sacramental signs here on earth. Next Week we will consider this list of saints and why they are here. – Fr. Scalia

2020 Fund-A-Cause – Promethean ActivPanel Titanium On Tuesday, June 9, the PTO sponsored their third and final “Virtual GALA” to help raise money for Saint James Catholic School. It was a wonderful event, and a great time was had by all. Each year the PTO hosts a “Fund-A-Cause” to provide for the educational needs of our students. This year’s Fund-A-Cause will help replace the school’s existing Active Boards, which are no longer functioning to full capacity, with new Active Panels from Promethean. Whether our students are learning religion, science, tech-nology, engineering, or math (STEM sub-jects), these new active boards will enhance our teacher’s ability to teach and our student’s ability to learn through realistic and interactive audio-visual experiences. Sister Mary Sue and Sister Melissa share why our students need these boards, via this fun video: https://bit.ly/2AaRSsO. If you are interested in helping the school’s Fund-A-Cause, please contact Kathleen Anderson at [email protected]
Update on the St. James School Annual Appeal Thanks to the generosity of so many parishioners and past and present school families, we are within $13,000 of our 2019-2020 Annual Appeal fundraising goal. If you would like to contribute to this important fund that helps keep our parish school competitive and affordable to all who desire an authentic Catholic education, then please donate via this link: https://membership.faithdirect.net/givenow/VA50/22645, or contact Kathleen Anderson at [email protected]. The last day to donate to this year’s Annual Appeal is June 30, 2020.

Masks for St. James Parishioners
Saint James Catholic School’s American Heritage Girls Troop 0681 has worked very hard on creating cloth masks for parishioners who need one. The troop will be leaving the masks in the front vestibule of the Church, in a basket marked for them. If you need a mask, please take one. We thank the American Heritage Girls, especially Ms. Lucia Hunter, for organizing this vital project.
