From Fr. Davy’s Desk:

On this fifth Sunday of Easter we read in the Acts of the Apostles that two of the

apostles, Paul and Barnabas, returned to Antioch to strengthen the believers and to en-

courage them to persevere in faith. We read in the previous chapter (13:50), "The Jews

stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their terri-

tory." So despite the animosity and persecution, the two apostles went back to the city

and continued to preach to the people there boldly. They warned the believers that suf-

fering is an essential part of Christian life. Saint Paul in his letter to the Romans (8:35)

emphasizes the suffering saying, "Can anything separate me from the love of Christ -

hardships, distress, persecution, lack of food and clothing, threats or violence?”

The second reading from the book of Revelation we read about the new heaven

and a new earth. In this holy and new city of Jerusalem God will wipe every tear from

their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old or-

der has passed away." In the modern world where there are so many domestic, religious,

national and international conflicts going on we may think it’s a dream world, not easy

to fulfill. But we have the means also suggested in the second reading and Gospel. The

early Christian community used the means of prayer and fasting to live in peace and har-

mony in the midst of persecution.

In today's gospel we hear Jesus' commandment: "I give you a new commandment:

love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how

all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Let us ask

ourselves this week; “How can we create a new harmonious world and love others as Je-

no fácil a realizar.
