The 30-second sample starts with a warping electronic horn surge then tapers off to rat-a-tat rhythms and heavy beating ensemble. Most of the filming was done in the Fiji Islands. MEETING IN THE CAVE THE BAT ATTACK Soundtrack – Orchestral – Instrumental Comp: John WILLIAMS Rts: (US) Duchess Music Corp. (BMI) Scr. (Film): W.D. Richter (Based on stage play by Hamilton Deane & John Balderston – From novel by Bram Stoker)

Japanese LP: DRACULA MCA VIM 7257 Spec: (All LPs) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 2 & 3) Notes: An analysis by Kenneth Sundberg goes into nice detail about the various scenes in this movie and the music that corresponds. However, there is considerable confusion, perhaps due in part to translating from a Finnish text, wherein there seems to be two different cave scenes and two different bat attack scenes. MEEETING IN THE CAVE (Scene) – “A vampire woman, escaping from a murder scene, throws herself through a window. And when Professor Van Helsing (played excellently by Laurence Olivier) confronts the same creature in a dark, water-dripping cave, the result is one of the most shocking scenes in Dracula movies… At “night Van Helsing takes Arthur Holmwood, Dr. Seward and Mr. Morris with him to the graveyard where Lucy is buried - and thus begins ‘Meeting in the Cave.’ In the misty, quiet graveyard the men gather outside the Westenra tomb and witness the un-dead Lucy emerge from the misty darkness with the grotesque underscore. They force Lucy to retreat into the tomb, where she is staked through the heart and given eternal peace… “At Dr. Seward’s sanitarium on the shore, Mina sees the schooner through her room’s window (the moment is beautifully captured by Williams in the beginning of ‘Meeting in the Cave’). The wolf, with his

appropriately savage cue, leaps from the shipwrecked schooner and runs inside a cave. Mina finds her way into the cave, meets Count Dracula (who was the wolf), and falls under his spell.” (Sundberg 2010) MEEETING IN THE CAVE (Music) – begins very quietly with harp and violins then starts to build to a strident theme on violins. It keeps building in intensity until the brass and pounding drums bring in a new theme. Then the mood quiets down with horn and bassoon at slow tempo.

THE BAT ATTACK (Scene) – “The entire team spends the night in the house adjoining Dr. Seward's asylum. Mina and Jonathan are already sleeping in the master bedroom, while a horrible scream from the asylum alerts everyone else at the first stroke of ‘The Bat Attack.’ Renfield, the very eccentric fly-eater, is found nearly dead in his cell… “As Van Helsing and Jonathan Harker try to hunt down Dracula at Carfax Abbey, the Count uses his bat form again. With this specific scene John Williams uses some of his most frightening music material, as the MCA album's ‘Bat Attack’ demonstrates. For [one] reason or another, the final movie scene uses very little of Williams' obvious underscore. The second part of the "Bat Attack" album version, however, has very little to do with bats. In an underground lair Dr. Van Helsing confronts his undead daughter, in the movie’s most impressive and shocking scene. During a struggle Mina is impaled on a stake held by Van Helsing - and she dies into the arms of her shocked father. The second part of MCA album's "Bat Attack" presents the underscore to this memorable scene. (Sundberg 2010) THE BAT ATTACK (Music) – starts with fast, fussy rhythms behind trombone, then the theme is carried by violins and brass which build to crescendo followed by sweeping ensemble passages that dart back and forth. Switch to low calm passage then high-pitched squeaks over erratic violins. Mellow woodwinds return to a quiet theme and a menacing fade out. One anonymous critic had this to say about both cues – “’Meeting in the Cave’ is of somewhat lesser interest, though it features a brief, small-scale brass march at 1:36 that is faintly echoed at the beginning of the following cue yet never reappears after that. ‘The Bat Attack,’ though it features a minor crescendo of trembling, high-pitched strings near its start, is largely dissonant and is easily the most traditional horror piece on the album. Possibly because of the main theme’s absence, these two cues are the score’s weakest.” (Anon. n.d.) Exterior locations were primarily in Cornwall, England and some scenes were done at Tintagel where there is a large sea cave. John Williams also did the score for Lost in Space, 1999 and Star Wars – The Emperor Strikes Back, 1980 (for both films see under Science Fiction). Reissue on Compilation CD: BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS/ HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (2001) GNP Crescendo 8075 (Tk 27) Notes: California sea monster ichthyoids attack various people. Jim, Dr. Drake, and Johnny, go on a fishing trip and land on a beach where they

are attacked by the humanoids near a sea cave. Johnny gets dragged out to sea by one of the humanoids, but Jim shoots and saves him. Dr. Drake notices a human leg sticking out from a pile of seaweed. Another monster rushes out of the seaweed and Johnny shoots it with his spear gun. The body under the seaweed is a girl whom they take back to Dr. Drake’s lab. There she tells her theory that the local fish cannery was experimenting with a new growth hormone on groups of trout. Some trout escaped, were maybe eaten by ancient coelacanths, and then evolved into the bloodthirsty ichthyoids. (Anon. n.d.)

McClure, Drake, & Morrow in front of caves The action of this film takes place at Noyo Bay near Fort Bragg, California and there are a few sea caves on the beach there. The 30-second sample had a repeated whooshing synth with tink-tink sounds transform into a low roar then come back fortissimo. James Horner also wrote the score for “Krull” (1983) (see under Science Fiction films). 12” 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 5) Notes: This was a limited pressing of only 500 numbered copies and the other LP and later CD releases of this film music do not include this cue. The US title of this horror film was “Screamers.” A recluse doctor uses the protection of an uncharted island to perform biological experiments, creating the perfect hybrid of human and fish that will be able to survive any world disaster. The underground laboratory of the mad doctor was in a natural cave and the cave used for the scenes was the Grotte di Nettuno, at Capo Caccia near Alghero, Sardinia. In a compilation edit a man swims and climbs on a sail boat in the cave and is captured by Edmond Rackham & natives. Rackham and his guest, Claude de Ross, walk through the decorated cave to a dock where they climb down into a diving bell that takes them to another cave where the fish monsters work in the water. They both go to the boat near the cave entrance and Rackham shows him the gold treasure in the hold. Switch to – the fishmen monsters who attack. Rackham shoots at them to protect the girl, Amanda. A

stalactite falls and kills one monster; then a bunch of them grab a native in the water. Rackham & Amanda escape. Go to – Amanda & Claude at the top of a pit. He throws down a rope and shinnies down to the sail boat. Fishman tries to grab him. He boards the boat and Amanda climbs down. They start to unmoor the boat. Rackham jumps on board, grabs the girl and holds a knife. She gets away. There’s a fight. Rackham falls overboard and is

attacked by a fishmen. Boulders start to fall from a ceiling hole, smashing the mast. Then the clip fades to partial end credits. A 30-second music sample had continuous vibrating, scintillating synth passages. King Kong takes Ann to his huge mountain cave and sets her down on a ledge. She is menaced by a snake-like Elasmosaurus. Kong wrestles with it and it strangles him, but he succeeds in smashing it on the floor. During the fight, Driscoll arrives (on right, stage left) from another entrance. Kong takes Ann up a sloping ledge to the upper cave entrance. There on the entrance ledge, “while Kong is distracted killing a Pteranodon that tried to fly away with Ann, Driscoll reaches her and they climb down a vine dangling from a cliff ledge.” (Anon. 2016)

In a the morbid tone, the narrator introduces the piece – Before you plan other trips see the earth first inside and out. There is beauty and dark adventure deep within it. See the mole people. You'll be pleasantly shocked. Feel their claws run up and down your spine. You'll dig it the most. They'll dig you too. Even the music of the mole people will get you. Melancholic violins and woodwinds create a strange atmosphere. Then the brass builds to a dramatic peak.

The movie ad poster for "The Mole People" is reproduced on the jacket cover along with seven other posters of the films whose music is also included on this album. Comments on the score – “One of the finest assets of The Mole People is its musical score, composed by Heinz Roemheld, Hans J. Salter, and Herman Stein, and orchestrated by Universal’s main man, David Tamkin… Heinz Roemheld wrote about 30 minutes of the 46-minute score, with Hans Salter adding about 12 minutes, and the remaining 4 minutes being contributed by Herman Stein.” (Anon. 2016b) Ref: Anon. 2016a, The Mole People, The Film, Monstrous Movie Music,

RCA Victor RD 60471 (Tk 13) Notes: A ridiculous horror movie about vicious hordes of vampire bats in southern New Mexico that attack livestock and humans. An incongruous plot shot through with pseudo-science and false, detrimental fantasies about bats. Mancini composed an effective main title where harp runs ripple out, the piccolo soars around overhead, then the strings lower the tone to a somber level. The harp returns to back the flute as it works out a lonesome melody. The single CD, Mancini’s Monster Hits, is limited-edition collector's item (with glow-in-the-dark cover), whici only contains approximately 15 minutes worth of music. In 2009 the Varèse Sarabande label released a limited edition CD, “Nightwing,” with 23 selections from the original score.

(Translated to English by David Holland) Time: 4:40 CD: A TALE OF THREE DUCKS L+R Music CDLR 45109 (Tk 4)

Notes: As part of the Metropolis Projekts in 1994 this music cue was written specially for a silent film, “Orlacs Hände (The Hands of Orlac).” The original 1924 Austrian-German film, starring Conrad Veidt, is a horror classic that tells of a concert pianist who loses his hands in an accident and has other hands transplanted from a recently executed murderer. This cue, extracted from the soundtrack and entitled “In the Cave of the Old Os,” is rather ambiguous and it is not known if there are any scenes in this movie involving caves. The music starts with weird guttural frog-like croaks, vocalizing, bird chirps, and other strange sounds, then a few piano chords follow by tenor sax free meanderings, more squeals and cries, getting frantic. Warner Chappell Music Italiana 5050467716827 (Tk 23) Notes: This Italian horror film (“Three Faces of Terror”) consisted of three sketches – 1. L’anello della luna; 2. Dr. Lifting; 3. Il guardino del lago (The Guardian of the Lake). This cue (“Cave Monster”) probably was used in the third sketch. (Mancini 2008) [The final chapter (The Guardian of the Lake) marks the return, after decades (think I can say), of the home-grown "monster movie" with a sort of sprawling dragon that looks like it came from the fantasy of the 60s'] Where there’s a dragon there might well be a cave; the title of this cue being, “The Cave of the Monster.” The 30-second sample had a few swathes of synth followed by a horn chord.
