through the colder season. Though the weather seems bleak, the winter months hold the beginning of the liturgical year, one filled with hope, light, and beauty as we move through

the preparation of Advent and the joy of Christmas.

Dear Parishioners,

Advent is underway. We await celebrating the first coming of Jesus at Bethlehem. We hope for the second coming of Jesus at the end of the world. We live in the third coming of Jesus here and now in the present. In this season of generosity, I ask you to consider being generous with your parish community through a ministry at the altar. I realize most people will not be able to say “yes,” but I want to invite you to take to prayer the possibility that you may have a call.

We witness great generosity among the young people in third, fourth, and fifth grade. Given the opportunity, they most willingly serve as candle bearers – altar servers. Though your children may not be the ones reading this, this invitation is for parents to consider inviting their child to serve at the altar. We welcome children who have not made their first communion. Though they do not receive communion during Mass, they are able to be close to the presence of Christ in the liturgy.

For the older children, there is the opportunity to serve at the altar as a cross bearer and incense person. These ministries require a little more skill and the strength to carry the cross.

Adults are invited to the three ministries: lector, extraordinary minister of the Eucharist, and Master of Ceremonies. Of the three, the one that may seem most intimidating to people is the position of lector. We do provide training for new lectors, and in doing so hope to instill confidence in one who is boldly proclaiming the Word of God. At the Masses in Spanish there are two lectors while in English there is one lector. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we need eight Eucharistic Ministers at the two principle Masses, 11:00 and 3:00. Additionally, during the week at the 5:15 Mass when the choristers sing, we need two Eucharistic Ministers. Many shy away from these roles because it is easy to believe oneself to be unworthy to serve at the altar; if this is the case, let me be the first say that if being worthy is a requirement for serving, neither Fr. Joe nor myself would be able to serve. It is God’s grace, both for us as priests and the congregation as a whole, that allows us to participate in and serve the mystery of the Mass.

Finally, the Master of Ceremonies is “in charge” of the Mass. It is their job to see that all the parts coming together in an orderly and prayerful way. This ministry takes the most commitment of any of the ministries. It requires a person who pays attention to every detail and then some. We hope to have five men and women prepared to serve in this capacity.

I appreciate your generosity. Your kindness has made the Cathedral parish welcoming, prayerful and financially sound. As we continue to live in the reality of Christ’s coming, I ask you to step forward in preparing your heart for His specific call for you.

El Adviento está entre nosotros. Esperamos celebrar la primera venida de Jesús en Belén. Estamos también esperando la segunda venida de Jesús en el fin del mundo. Actualmente estamos viviendo la tercera venida de Jesús aquí y ahora en el presente. En esta temporada de generosidad, le pido que considere ser generoso con su comunidad parroquial a participando de un ministerio en el altar. Me doy cuenta, de que la mayoría de la gente no podrá decir ‘sí,’ pero lo quiero invitar a que discierna en oración la posibilidad de que pueda tener un llamado.

Presenciamos una gran generosidad entre los jóvenes que están en el tercer, cuarto, y quinto grado. Dada la oportunidad, ellos están más dispuestos a servir como monaguillos o acólitos --servidores del altar. Aunque sus hijos no sean los que están leyendo esto, esta invitación es para que los padres consideren la posibilidad de invitar a sus niños a servir en el altar. También son bienvenidos los niños que no han hecho su primera comunión. Aunque no reciban el Cuerpo de Cristo durante la misa, podrán tener la oportunidad de estar cerca a la presencia de Cristo en la liturgia.

Para los niños mayores, hay la oportunidad de servir en el altar como portador de la cruz e incienso. Estos ministerios requieren un poco más de habilidad y fuerza para llevar la cruz.

Se invita a los adultos a los tres ministerios: lector, ministerio extraordinario de la Eucaristía, y Maestro de Ceremonias. Si este es el caso, déjeme ser el primero en decir que si ser digno es un requisito de servir, ni el Padre Joe ni yo mismo podríamos servir. Es la gracia de Dios, para nosotros como sacerdotes y para la congregación en su conjunto, que nos permite participar y servir en el misterio de la Misa.

Finalmente, el Maestro de Ceremonias está “encargado” de la Misa. Es su trabajo ver que todas las partes se unan de manera organizada y devota. Este ministerio requiere el mayor compromiso de cualquiera de los ministerios. Se requiere una persona que preste atención a cada detalle y luego más. Quisiéramos tener cinco hombres y mujeres preparados para servir en este servicio.

Yo aprecio su generosidad. Su bondad ha hecho de la Parroquia de la Catedral un lugar acogedor, devoto, y financieramente sólido. “Insignificant man, escape from your everyday business for a short while, hide for a moment from your restless thoughts. Break off from your cares and troubles and be less concerned about your tasks and labors. Make a little time for God and rest a while in him.” These words were written nine hundred years ago by the Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Anselm. His call to pause, stop and “make a little time for God” are perfect for this time of Advent. Yet pausing and stopping probably isn’t on the top of the list for most people right now. We have to get ready for Christmas! The decorations must go up! Everything is on sale! Okay, fine…Yes, we do have to get ready for Christmas. But if we are not careful with our “preparations for Christmas” we will miss Advent. And if we miss Advent we will miss Christmas completely.

Advent is a time of preparation, not in the sense of a flurry of activity, but of stopping, listening, and repentance. One of the central figures throughout Advent is John the Baptist crying out “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” Everything about Advent is pleading with us to stop and listen to the God who comes to meet us in Christ! Think of Advent like a mini-Lent. Take up practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Go to confession and let the Lord take away your sins and fill you with His grace. Set aside whatever is holding you back from God! Give Him the chance to purify your hearts and minds, and make you ready to receive Him. If we understand Advent as this critical time of preparation, then we will be ready for Christmas. We will be ready to meet the Lord.

“Hombre insignificante, escapa de sus asuntos cotidianos por un corto tiempo, escóndale por un momento de sus pensam-ientos inquietos. Deslíguese de sus preocupaciones y problemas y esté menos preocupado por sus tareas y labores. Haga un poco de tiempo para Dios y descanse un poco en él.” Estas palabras fueron escritas hace novecientos años por el Arzobispo de Canterbury, St. Anselm. Su llamado a hacer una pausa, observar, detenerse y “hacer un poco de tiempo para Dios” es perfecto para este tiempo de Adviento. Piense en Adviento como una mini-Cuaresma. Es importante tener prácticas de oración, ayuno y limosna. Confiésese y deje que el Señor quite sus pecados y lo llene con Su gracia. ¡Deje a un lado lo que lo aleja de Dios! Dele la oportunidad de purificar sus corazones y mentes y prepárese para recibirlo. Si entendemos el Adviento como este momento crítico de preparación, entonces estaremos listos para la Navidad. Estaremos listos para encontrarnos con el Señor.

Christmas Reflection and Thank You, Karina

Karina has served in the parish for the past ten years, and we are so grateful for the contribution her presence has been here at the Cathedral. We are grateful for this woman of faith, and are pray-ing for her as she continues to follow God’s call to serve. Please join us in thanking Karina for all she has done, and in praying for the place she is next called to love.

We are coming close to a very important feast that for many of us has become a “simple exchange of gifts” or an occasion to deco-rate the house differently.

I invite you to reflect together and deepen the true meaning of this great feast of Christmas, a day in which we celebrate the greatest gift that God has given to man, sending His Son to the world to save us from sin and open the doors of Heaven for each one of us.

In this time of waiting, Advent, until the arrival of Christmas, we must prepare our hearts to receive the Child Jesus and find a wor-thy place where he can make His dwelling in us, and can celebrate with great joy His coming that will give us the light necessary to continue walking towards eternal life.

It is a time to share and to pray with family, to forgive the mistakes of others and ask forgiveness for those of our own, to embrace those who are suffering...that is what it means to live the true spirit of Christmas.

It is time to pray and a time to reflect, are we offering a worthy place where Christ can shed his love and grace? Or are our hearts too occupied with things of the world that nothing can enter, not even the love of this little Child? Perhaps we believe that we al-ready have opened up and allowed Him to enter, but is this really the case? Or do we still fail to give him the place most important in our hearts, the most important in our lives?

He wants to be born in each one of us, and not only during Christ-mas, but every day. He calls us desperately, searching for a place, a safe soul where he can make a home forever, searching for a place in our life. Let us give Him the place that He deserves, an important place, the best place in our soul.

Let us give thanks to God for the great gift of celebrating His birth and ask Him for the graces necessary to receive Him with a clean heart and with enough joy to say, “Merry Christmas! And may the Child Jesus pour out all of His blessings on each and every one of you and your families.”

I say goodbye to you after telling you that God has given me the gift of having ten years of service in the Cathedral; whenever you have asked me why I work in the Cathedral, I have always said that my vocation is to serve! Ten wonderful years that will always remain in my heart, a time of learning, of growth. I take with me much love and inspiration, thanks to each and every one of you for having touched and impacted my heart!

Se acerca una fiesta muy importante pero que para muchos de no-sotros se ha convertido en un “simple intercambio de regalos” o en una ocasión para decorar la casa diferente.

Los invito a reflexionar juntos y profundizar en el verdadero sig-nificado de esta gran fiesta de la Navidad, día en el que celebramos el regalo más grande que Dios ha hecho al hombre, enviar a su Hijo al mundo para salvarnos del pecado y abrir las puertas del cielo para cada uno de nosotros.

En este tiempo de espera, adviento, hasta la llegada de la Navidad, debemos preparar nuestros corazones para recibir al Niño Jesús y pueda encontrar un lugar digno para que pueda hacer su morada en nosotros y poder celebrar con gran gozo su venida que nos dará la luz necesaria para seguir caminando hacia la vida eterna.

Es un tiempo para compartir y rezar en familia, en perdonar los errores de los demás y pedir perdón por los nuestros, de acoger a los que están solos o sufriendo…eso es vivir el verdadero espíritu de la Navidad.

Es tiempo para hacer oración y para reflexionar ¿Le estamos ofre-ciendo un lugar digno donde Él pueda derramar su amor y sus gracias? O ¿ya está tan ocupado nuestro corazón con las cosas del mundo que no entra nada, ni siquiera el amor de este pequeño niño? Quizás creemos que ya le hemos abierto y lo hemos dejado entrar, pero ¿es realmente así?, ¿o todavía nos falta darle el lugar más importante de nuestro corazón, el más importante de nuestras vidas?

Él quiere nacer en cada uno de nosotros y no sólo en Navidad, sino todos los días. Él llama desesperadamente, busca un lugar, un alma segura donde pueda habitar para siempre, busca un lugar en nuestra vida. Démosle ese lugar que Él merece, un lugar impor-tante, el mejor lugar de nuestra alma.

Demos gracias a Dios por el gran regalo de celebrar su nacimiento y pidámosle las gracias necesarias para recibirlo con un corazón limpio y con mucha alegría poder decir ¡Feliz Navidad! Y que el Niño Jesús derrame todas sus bendiciones en cada uno de ustedes y en sus familias.

Me despido de ustedes después de decirles que ¡Dios me dio el regalo de tener 10 años de servicio en la Catedral, definitivamente cuando me han preguntado porque trabajo en Catedral siempre he dicho porque es mi vocación servir! 10 años maravillosos que permanecerán siempre en mi corazón, tiempo de aprendizaje, cre-cimiento. ¡Me llevo muchísimo amor e inspiración, Gracias a todos y cada uno de ustedes por haber tocado e impactado mi corazón!

I march in place to keep warm, anticipating the comfort of a heated tram car. It is 6:02 am in downtown Salt Lake City, and I am waiting to take TRAX to work.

Contrary to Christmas songs about winter wonderlands, there is nothing magical about morning public transportation in snowy weather. I am freezing, despite many layers. The world swims in blackness, despite the glow of shop windows and Christmas lights. Anything would be better than this.

3 more minutes.

A small crowd has gathered. The cold sharpens as we enter the final countdown to the arrival of the Blue Line. Each commuter marches in place, silently fighting back cold and sleep. Together we wait for the tram.

2 more minutes.

Every wait fails without an object. The Israelites discovered this as they waited two thousand years for the coming of the Messiah. Again and again, they replaced God with flimsy objects of affection - power, wealth, leisure, pride. Again and again, they failed. Forty years wandering in the Desert of Sin. Enslaved in the Babylonian Exile.

Coldness and darkness pepper the Old Testament: the consequences of desires turned away from God. If the Israelites seemed doomed to failure, how can we possibly succeed?

All we have is hope, the theological virtue of desire for union with God. Hope fixes the gaze on Christ, recognizing that our desire for Heaven means nothing without God’s help. It understands how badly we need His grace.

Hope smacks us in the face during the season of Advent, when we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the God-Man. Under-neath the trappings of Christmas trees and presents, we come face to face with the reality of God’s love for us. We realize that He so loved the world, that He sent His only begotten Son to us as a vulnerable little baby, who fussed and needed his diaper changed.

This divine humility illuminates the virtue of hope. Despite our sins and failings, God loves us beyond all understanding. Therefore, we can confidently hope for heaven.

Reaching Out

Hello fellow Cathedral of the Madeleine parishioners,

My name is Genevieve Hoffmann and I am a current member of The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP). I am writing today to tell you a little bit about The Society and how we are serving our local community.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is one of the oldest charitable organizations in the world. It is a Catholic lay orga-nization of about 800,000 men and women throughout the world who voluntarily join together to grow spiritually and offer person-to-person services to the needy and suffering in 153 countries on five continents. However you don’t need to travel anywhere else to be part of the good works of The Society. There is an SVdP conference right here at the Cathedral of the Madeleine!

I have been blessed to work with The Society for two years now. In my time volunteering with SVdP I have been able to facilitate in the aid of dozens of families and individuals through tough times. I will never forget the joy in a young mother’s eyes when we told her that we would be able to pay her electric bill that month. Because of SVdP, she would be able to host a birthday party for her daughter.

The Cathedral of the Madeleine conference of SVdP meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month at 7pm in the basement of the Cathedral. If you have any questions about The Society, what we do, or how you can help please do not hesitate to come by one of our meetings or reach out to me (my contact information is below).

There will also be a second collection on December 30th. All proceeds will go towards our SVdP conference. We graciously and humbly ask for your generosity.

The Cathedral of the Madeleine has been a home to many since 1909. Being not only a place of worship, but also a historical landmark, so often people come and go, stopping only to see the beauty of the building. Yet, this Cathedral is more than a place to pass through, it is a home with a heart that desires community.

With this desire in mind, we have recently begun the Ambassador program. The purpose of these greeters in blue nametags is not just for another friendly face to say hello, but a person ready to encounter anyone seeking more in their faith. Our mission is to continue to build the network, to bring together friends that may not have met otherwise, to plug you in to a ministry you may not even know exists, to allow a greater sense of encounter and community.

In this season of Advent, we are reminded of the meaning of Christ being with us. The Lord is coming, and He desires us to welcome Him in one another. If you feel called to be a part of this ministry to create connections here at the Cathedral, please reach out to Ali at amartinez@utcotm.org. We look forward to welcoming you on Sunday.

In light of Fr. Martin’s letter to parishioners about discerning a call to serve, we wanted to take the op-portunity to present you with a few more places to serve out of generosity. Though not directly serving at the altar, both the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Cathedral Ambassadors allow us to give from the outpouring of grace we receive each week in the gift of the altar.
