Victoria Falls - GeologyVictoria Falls - GeologyDuring the Jurassic Period (150 - 200 million years

ago) volcanic activity - resulted in thick basaltdeposits that covered large parts of SouthernAfrica.

As the lava cooled and solidified, cracks appearedin the hard basalt crust, which were filled withclay and lime.

Erosion and the course of the mighty ZambeziRiver cut through these softer materials, forming the first of a series of waterfalls.

Over at least 2,000 years, the Falls have receded8km upstream, as the Zambezi carved its waythrough Seven (7) GorgesSeven (7) Gorges.

The historical geological formation of the fallscan be seen in the dark basaltdark basalt in the series ofrocky gorges below the Falls.

It is guessed that the Devil's CataractDevil's Cataract, which ispresently the lowest point of Victoria Falls, willeventually become the next gorge as the rivercontinues to cut its way back upstream.

Victoria Falls - ForwardVictoria Falls - Forward

Both the Zambian and Zimbabwean adhere to the Joint Management Planthat they have developed.

Zambia need to develop and implement policies and programmes that willenhance understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the victoriafalls

The Locals have to be involved in the management of the victoria falls ifit has to be protected

Tourists need to be sensitised on the geological part of the falls other thanthe hydrology only

There is need for an holistic joint management approach for both Zambiaand Zimbabwe to achieve the sustainability of the Victoria falls
