RevoluSun has kicked off the New Year by sparking a solarrevolution in hundreds of Hawaii homeowners. Using therecent BIA Home Building and Remodeling Show to educateand inspire families on the ease and affordability of solarenergy, RevoluSun has set the tone for 2011 as “The Yearof Solar.”
Hundreds of Hawaii residents were able to see a solar systemcustom designed for their home, all from RevoluSun’sinteractive display. RevoluSun, Hawaii’s leading providerof photovoltaic (PV) systems that turn free sunlight intoelectricity, worked with homeowners from around Hawaii tozoom in on their house with satellite imagery and determinethe optimal solar system for their specific roof, location, andenergy needs.
“We talked with dozens of families who came to the showspecifically to learn about solar, and of the many solar firmshere, our quality, professionalism, and technology drew themto RevoluSun,” said Eric Carlson, RevoluSun partner. “Weeven had a few homeowners use their mobile phones tosecure financing right from our booth.”
With oil prices near a 52-week high, the continueduncertainty of energy costs remains a real concern for Hawaiihomeowners. More and more families are making the switchto solar and putting hundreds of dollars per month back intotheir pockets.
“This was a great way to kick off 2011 and continue Hawaii’ssolar revolution,” said Carlson. “The excitement that we’vegenerated will surely make this year ‘The Year of Solar.’”
Even if you missed the BIA Show, Oahu, Maui, and Big Islandresidents can learn more about solar and schedule their ownfree energy evaluation today.

Igot into the roofing business years ago out ofsheer necessity. At the time, I was renovatingmy home and needed to do some excavation
work. So I dug a trench and moved some dirt tomy back yard. The problem, however, was that I had to dothis either by hand or with anexcavator such as a bobcatskid loader.
I wasn’t looking forward todoing this by hand, and Iknew that if I chose an exca-vator, I had to get the equip-ment through a 36-inch frontgate. I began looking for aplace to rent this type of ma-chine and I couldn’t find whatI really needed. So I inquiredwith local equipment dealersand wound up purchasing therequired machines myself. Astime went on, I started lend-ing the machines out to con-tractors I knew, andeventually, this service tookon a life of its own.
Today, I operate Mu-rakami Roofing and our in-ventory consists of small skidloaders and track loaders that
range from 36 inches to 42 inches wide. The loadersare used mainly to move dirt, gravel and other typesof material. We also have mini excavators that areused to dig footings, trenches, swimming pools, aswell as remove small trees. We recently acquired acompact backhoe that combines a skid loader andan excavator in one compact machine. We carry at-tachments for some of our machines, like trenchersfor installing pipes, jack hammers for breaking upconcrete and backhoes for our skid loaders to digfootings. The machines are manufactured by Bob-cat, Komatsu, Toro and JCB.
Our customers range from large contractors whoneed a compact machine for demolition work in-side buildings, to homeowners that have smalllandscaping projects. Over the past three years, thetrend has been toward younger homeowners doingtheir own renovation projects such as digging foot-ings for concrete sidewalks, patios and swimmingpools. Some of our customers, in fact, are womenand they have no problem operating the machines.
The versatility of these machines is quite amaz-ing. For their size, they are quite powerful. Ourskid loaders are capable of moving a large pile ofgravel in a matter of hours. The mini excavator candig footings of a patio in one afternoon. The laborsavings alone can pay for the rental of the ma-chines.
Call us at 348-8270 to find the right machine foryour project and for rental prices and deliverycharges.

Left untreated, asphaltpavement will deteri-orate rapidly. The as-
phalt binder that holds thepavement together beginsto oxidize and weathersoon after installation.Moisture penetrates the as-phalt causing further dam-age and deterioration to thepavement.
One of the major waysmoisture penetrates asphaltis through fatigue cracking.Fatigue cracking occurs inareas subjected to repeatedtraffic loadings (wheelpaths); characteristicallywith a chicken wire/alliga-tor pattern in later stages. This cracking allows waterinto the pavement, whichslowly breaks it down, eventually forming a pot-hole. Potholes are bowl-
shaped holes of varioussizes in the pavement sur-face. The bestfix for heavilycracked areasand potholesis to replacethat area ofasphalt.
W a l k e r -Moody Con-struction Co.Ltd. suggeststwo ways youcan replaceasphalt inthese areas:hot patch andcold patch.
For areaswith fatiguecracking you will need tocut the asphalt out. Cutenough asphalt so the holeis about 2 inches deep.
Clean the patch areaso that all loose de-
bris is removed. You willhave to spray tack coat inthe patch area and aroundthe edges; this acts like a
glue andbinds thehot asphaltto the cur-rent sur-face. Lastly, place thehot asphaltin the hole
and compact. You willneed about 1/4-inch extraasphalt for every inch ofdepth for the hole. This al-
lows the new asphalt tocompact level to the sur-rounding ground. If thearea to be patched is nottoo big, PatchMaster (highperformance potholepatch) can be used to repairthe damage. This wouldallow you to dig the hole, clean, place the product, and compact.
For areas with a pothole, the same process as above
would be ideal. PatchMas-ter is an excellent productand is made for this. It canbe placed in any weather, even when there is water inthe hole. After placing theproduct, it can be driven onimmediately if necessary.Allowing a week to cure isideal, however.

Dripping faucets. White spots onshower doors. Clogged show-erheads. Lengthy waits for hot
water. If these sound familiar, yourhouse may have more than alimescale problem. You could beleaking money.
Limescale, also known as “scaling,”is the mineral deposit that accumu-lates on the inside of pipes and water-
using appliances. Left unchecked, these crusty deposits reduce the effi-ciency and lifespan of solar and elec-tric hot water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, pool filters andspas.
HydroFlow uses a safe, chemical-free process to combat this age-oldproblem. By emitting randomly vary-ing electric fields, HydroFlow pre-vents minerals from “sticking” to theinside of pipes so they naturally washthrough the system.
“If you have to wait for yourshower to have hot water, you’rethrowing money down the drain,”says Harold von Sydow, director ofNano Tek-On, which distributes Hy-droFlow. “Instead of buying a newhot water heater, it’s a lot more af-fordable and efficient to let Hy-
droFlow clean out your plumbing. One HydroFlow unit protects anentire home and is safe for all pipes. It’s easy to install because you don’thave to cut any pipework.”
Here are just a few benefits whenchoosing HydroFlow:
• Saves money and water• No chemicals. Safe to drink.• Increases efficiency and lifes-
pan of water-using appliances• Ideal for solar and electric hot
water heaters• Reduces spotting on shower
doors and dishes• Lowers water waste and sewage
fees• Reduces bacteria, algae and
limescale buildup in pools and spas• Reduces chemicals needed in
fresh and salt water pools
Nano Tek-On specializes in en-vironmentally friendly surfacetreatments including sealants forglass and natural stone, antimicro-bial coatings and self-cleaning sur-faces.

As a large segment ofour Hawaii popula-tion and our fami-
lies/relatives enter thegolden years, it’s wise toconsider converting one ofyour bathrooms to a walk-in shower and add assistbars on the walls, accordingto Gerry Peters of HPSConstruction Services.
Taking out and replac-ing one of your tubs with alow- or fla- threshold walk-in shower is much moreuseful than ordering one ofthe so-called walk-in tubs, which usually cost morefor the tub and shippingalone than the entire job to
convert from tub to walk-in shower. Furthermore, these tubs are potentiallyproblematic because theswing-in hatches may de-velop leaks.
You can install a built-inbench in the walk-inshower and also a conven-ient sliding, adjustableshower head. This enablesyou to take comfortable,water-saving showers andsave thousands of gallonsof water. Most important,it is safer than a tub androomier. That’s becausetubs have an inward slopethat takes up space.
Choosing to cut out a
slice of your tub and usea shower curtain is a disas-ter waiting to happen. Notonly do they look awful, butthe open sections allowwater to rot the floors, rustthe tubs, or create largeamounts of mold. Byspending just a bit more atthe beginning of the proj-ect, you can get it right andenhance your daily livingexperience as well as theresale value of your homeor condo.
The secret to cost-effec-tive kitchen and bath im-provements, according toPeters, is to reject notionsthat you have to move
drains and other plumbingor electrical, or sufferthrough drafting/plans andpermits cost and timeagony and frustration, toget a really nice-looking,modern and functionalkitchen and bath.
Peters says that, depend-ing on the job and whetherthere is current water orother damage, these up-grades can be had for$3,500-$8,500 for baths, including tub-to-showerconversions, and $9,000-$15,000 for kitchens. Cus-tomers, he adds, may saveup to 40 percent over theold approach of tear-it-out-
and-start-anew.Another major area of
concern when choosingthe right bid, is to deter-mine how detailed theproposal is, and whether itaddresses potential un-foreseen problems, suchas termite and water dam-age.
Another warning on up-grades, remodels, and re-pairs and bigger projectsis to watch out for lowball, base pricing to getyou hooked, but then youget add-ons and more add-ons for things you thoughtwere included, Petersadds. Unforeseen damage,
clearly spelled out in ad-vance, is a legitimate add-on, but only when it isreally necessary. Butkeep in mind that you, as aclient, cannot add thingsin that weren’t discussed.
Peters cautions home-owners that a state Gen-eral Excise Tax license isnot the same as a contract-ing license. Check anddouble check whom youchoose to do businesswith. HPS offers licensedhandyman services in ad-dition to kitchen and bathupgrades and remodels, plus other general con-tracting services.

For more than 20 years,Graham Builders,Hawaii’s premier de-
sign and build firm, hasworked with homeownersto design and renovatetheir dream homes. Re-cently, the company hasnoticed that clients are re-questing designs that willperform and respond to an-ticipated lifestyle changesas more people decide toremain in their homesthroughout their lives.
“Today it’s all about flex-ibility and adaptability. Indesign terms, this translatesinto plans that can be easilymodified to accommodatehomeowners’ future needsand changing lifestyles overtime,” said Evan Fujimoto,Graham Builders president.“Twenty years ago, it wasrare to think about howone’s primary residencecould be a potential incomesource or how technologywould make it possible to
reduce costs of living andmaintenance. That’s not thecase anymore. Most home-owners are rethinking whata home means to them, andfor many, it’s an investmentthat must pay dividends.”
The ongoing economiccrisis and burgeoning na-tional debt have broughtinto question people’s fu-ture financial sustainability, especially during retire-ment. Homes are stillthought of simply as wherewe live, but many Hawaiihomeowners are now con-sidering how their homecan be a source of supple-mental income. For in-stance, building an additionto the house for an olderparent today can some dayalso be rented out, pro-vided the homeowners ad-here to the proper zoningand building codes in theirarea.
In addition, the introduc-tion of solar photovoltaic
(PV) panels has turnedtoday’s home into one thatsaves homeowners moneyon their electric bill. Solarwater heating and PV com-bined can reduce energycosts substantially, savinghomeowners tens of thou-sands of dollars over thelife cycle of those systems. This is real savings that canthen be used for otherneeds.
“However, the focusmust first be on what wecall ‘passive design,’ or howwe can take maximum ad-vantage of natural daylight-ing and capturing our coolbreezes so that we don’thave to turn on lights dur-ing the day or run energy-gobbling AC systems,”stresses Fujimoto. “Modernarchitecture that featuresdesign elements such ascool roofs, insulation, clerestory windows thatallow more natural lightand cross ventilation into
the home are all intendedto reduce energy consump-tion and increase comfortbefore mechanical systemsare considered,” he adds.
Homeowners also areopting for smaller homeswith an eye on how best tooptimize their space. Theyare being more realisticabout what they want anddesigning homes that aremore in line with theireveryday life. “Having morespace does not necessarilyequate to more happiness,”said Fujimoto. “We’re nowseeing homes trendingsmaller but more requestsfor homes that can beadapted for different uses.”

You may be one of themany Hawaii home-owners who have
thought about replacing anold floor or dirty carpetswith new wood or tileflooring. But are you a bitoverwhelmed by thechoices, mainly becauseyou don’t quite know whatthose choices are all about?Well, according to ShirleyPai Hilton of Pacific Im-ports International, you arenot alone.
“What we notice mostabout the people who callor come into our show-room is their great need forinformation”, says Hilton.“We can literally spendhours with a particular cus-tomer, educating them onthe different types of woodand stone flooring, eachproduct’s features, func-tions and benefits, and alsogive them tips on whatmight best suit their deco-rating taste. It’s an essentialpart of helping the cus-
tomer make a decision thatthey will be happy with!”
For example, did youknow that those lines be-tween the planks of woodflooring are called a micro-bevel and what its purposeis? Did you know that thetop layer of wood on an en-gineered floor has to be
thick enough, but not toothick? Do you know whatacclimation is, or what thedifference between ce-ramic and porcelain tile is?
Hilton attempts to an-swer these and other ques-tions at the company’s freeflooring seminars. The next
session will be held on Sat-urday, Feb. 19 from 10 to11:30 a.m. at the Kalihishowroom. The programwill start with very basicinformation on the varioustypes of wood, stone, andtile flooring on the marketand there will even be in-stallation professionals on
hand to answer questions. Most important, Hiltonthanks everyone with a pri-vate sale, exclusive to at-tendees and always thelowest deal they give!
“People always walkaway saying how muchthey learned and how very
happy they were that theyattended. If you are lookingfor new flooring, youshould definitely attend,”says Hilton.

Do-it-yourse l fersrange from expertsto novices, ambi-
tious renovators to week-end handypersons, but onething they all share is thedrive to find products andtools that can make theirhome improvement proj-ects easy, successful andfast.
“Do-it-yourselfers ap-preciate home improve-ment products that arenew and innovative,” saysPatti Price, senior vicepresident of merchandisingfor Lowe’s. “They’re look-
ing for products and toolsthat make projects easier, improve the functionalityand efficiency of theirhomes, solve an old prob-lem in a new way, and areunique and original.”
Lowe’s polled a panel ofDIYers recently to find outwhat products they consid-ered to be the most innova-tive — and useful — for thestart of 2011. The top prod-ucts will be updated quar-terly, but for the beginningof the year, here are theirpicks:
1. Recessed light conversionkit
If you’re looking for aquick, do-it-yourself light-ing upgrade, with profes-sional results, replace arecessed light with a pen-dant. This conversion kitmakes the process quickand easy, and the end re-sults provide updated styleto fit any decor. Panelistshighly rated the product’sinnovative features, im-proved functionality andeasy installation.
2. Side-by-side refrigeratorWith an array of high-
tech features and an EN-ERGY STAR, theWhirlpool side-by-side re-frigerator won high marks
for its innovativeness andimproved functionality. Ithelps contain spills easierand it also has more stor-age space.
3. Re-keyable locksetsSchlage SecureKey Lock-
sets allow homeowners torekey the deadbolt lockusing a special key. Thelock cannot be rekeyedusing generic tools so itprovides a new solution toan old problem and im-proves functionality overother similar products.
4. Two-burner patio grillAlthough the Lowe’s poll
was conducted in winter, panelists were alreadythinking about warmweather and grilling seasonwhen they chose the Char-Broil Quantum 2-BurnerPatio Grill. The grill usesthe Quantum Infraredcooking system to lock innatural juices for moist, fla-vorful grilling and offerstemperatures that rangefrom intense searing to lowbarbecuing. What makes iteven more unique though,is its convenient sideshelves that fold for easystorage, perfectly sized forsmall patios.
5. Lock and fold hardwoodflooring
Installing traditionalhardwood flooring can belabor-intensive, so it’s nosurprise that Bruce Lock &Fold Hardwood Flooringwas impressive because ofits ease of use and how itutilizes new innovation tosolve an old problem. Theflooring, which comes in avariety of finishes, installswithout glue, nails or sta-ples by simply locking intoplace.
6. Double oven rangeWhen it comes to elec-
tric ranges, panelists saidthe Whirlpool DoubleOven Range is twice asnice. Users enjoyed theflexibility of having twoovens, allowing them tocook two different dishes— like a pizza and acasserole — at the same
time in one range.
7. Stylish ceiling fanCeiling fans have long
been a point of contentionfor homeowners who lovetheir practicality and de-signers who loathe theutilitarian look of somestyles, especially thosewith attached light fix-tures. Panelists give theallen + roth 23-inch LeafLight Aged Bronze CeilingFan high marks for com-bining innovation andfunctionality. The productconceals the fan bladeswithin a stylish light fix-ture adorned with bronzeleaf accents.
