Winter Celebrations / Parties Classroom Parties will take place in the class rooms on Friday, December 19th, from 2:25 to 3:25 PM. Please check with your student’s

classroom parent or teacher to provide any party supplies and / or activities.

From the Lunch Line

Attention: Please check your student’s lunch

account to be sure that they have sufficient funds

for purchasing lunch. We will not be giving any

loans the first week after Thanksgiving break.

Lunch is $2.50 and breakfast is $1.25. An extra entree is

$1.00 Please have your student bring any cash/checks to the

office in the mornings for deposit into their account. Remem-

ber that EZ-Pay is available if you wish to use a credit card to

put money on your student’s lunch account. You can check

your student’s EZpay to review the lunch money account so

the account is current.

Annual Food Drive

The WARM Food Drive is Monday, November 10th

through Friday, November 21st. Huber Ridge is collecting

canned pineapple (kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades) and

Ketchup (3rd, 4th, and 5th grades) Huber Ridge Leadership

students will help lead this project. Thank you for your con-

tinuing support for this important community event. See the big flyer on

the last page of this newsletter for more details.

Notes from the Principal:

If you wish to meet your child at the door during afternoon dismissal time, please be sure to park your car in a legal park-ing place in our lot or on the street. If you stay in your car, in the line, we will help your student get to your car safely as the line of traffic moves forward. If your middle and/or high school student is picking up your Huber Ridge student, please remind the older student to use appropriate school language and behavior while waiting for the dismissal bell. Please remember that the school grounds are closed to the public during school hours for the safety of our students. We are looking for gently used carpet remnants or carpet samples for use in the classrooms. If you know where Huber Ridge could get carpet squares, please let me know. Thanks to all the parents who attended their student’s confer-ences. The teachers were happy to share information with the parents about their students. Please feel free to email your teacher with concerns, questions, and other information as you need to. Checking your student’s backpack nightly and for Friday folders will also help keep communications flow-ing from the teacher to the parent. Chris Blados, Principal

Guess who is turning 50 Years Old this year?? Huber Ridge Elementary is!!

Huber Ridge Elementary opened in 1964. Did you know that as the neighborhood was being

built and before the school was constructed, as many as ten houses were used for school in the Huber Ridge area? Huber Ridge Elementary will have celebrations through the school year to mark this 50th anniversary so check upcoming newsletter for event dates.

Wow!! So many Box Tops were collected during the

October contest that the PTA counted all weekend. The

final count was over 12,000 box tops. Another contest

will be starting soon so keep collecting those Box

Tops. You can check out

www.boxtops4education.com. for a list of participat-

ing products and games to earn more points for Hu-

ber Ridge.

Thank you, Volunteers!! From Aug. 13 through Oct. 21, volunteers

have copied papers, read to students, shelved books, worked the

book fair, and performed many more chores for a total of 582 hours!

Please remember to sign in as a volunteer whenever you are volun-

teering at Huber Ridge so your volunteer hours are counted. Thanks

so much for making a difference at Huber Ridge!

Winter Recess

Students will go outside for recess unless the day’s temperature or

wind chill is below 20 degrees. Please dress your child appropriately with a coat, hat

and gloves.

Missing a coat? Check out the lost and found near the gym.

If your student is asthmatic, and needs to be inside, please be sure to have the doctor send in the proper form for it.

Family Vacations

When planning vacations, we ask that you please consult the district calendar. For your

help in this matter, the district calendar is created a year in advance and made available on the district website at

Children’s Dismissal Plan

Has your daycare provider changed for your student? Do your children go home a different way by pick up or by walking? If so, please let us know so we can assist your child to his/her safe location in an effective manner.

Please send a note into the office/teacher if your student is go-ing home with a different person or daycare.

gency contact information. If a phone number has changed,

please come in to change it or send a signed note to the office.

Doctor Notes

Headed to school after a morning doctor or orthodontist appoint-

ment or leaving early to get to an afternoon appointment? Please

remember to ask for a doctor’s excuse so that the absence or tardy

can be properly coded as a medical excuse. Thanks.

Fun Pasta Fundraising is a new fundraiser presented by the Huber Ridge PTA. Fun shapes of pasta for pasta salads, soups, and more! Check out the many available shapes including OSU pasta at the website www.funpastafundraising.com. Information about the fund-raiser will be distributed by Huber Ridge PTA soon. The fundraiser will be Nov. 14-Dec. 3, 2014. Students will collect payment (cash or checks made out to Huber Ridge PTA) as the students take orders. Orders must be brought to school by Dec. 3, 2014. The pick up date will Dec, 12, 2014. Remind your student to be safe while selling the fundraiser. Also remember to deliver your items as soon as possible to your customers.

Huber Ridge Spiritwear

Huber Ridge PTA sent home flyers about the new Huber Ridge Rockets spiritwear you can purchase. Two types of shirts and 2 types of sweatshirts are available. All items feature the Huber Ridge rocket on the front. The T-shirts are available in 3 col-ors—pink, vintage blue, and gray. The other shirt—a baseball style—and sweatshirts are available in gray with the Huber

Ridge Rockets on the front. Check out the great prices of the items on the flyer. Orders with pay-ment (cash or check made out to Huber Ridge PTA) are due Nov. 21. The spiritwear would be great for Christmas gifts and they will be back in time for Christmas.

Music Notes from Rm. 113

Hello Huber Ridge Families! I am excited to

share with you what your child is learning

about in their music classes. We’ve been

learning important musical concepts with

singing, dancing, playing singing games, and playing instru-

ments. I have listed a few things that you can ask your child

about below.

First Grade: Music Opposites- We are practicing loud/soft

and fast/slow (tempo). We are preparing for high/low.

Second Grade: We have been singing sol and mi melodic

patterns with hand signs, and placing sol and mi notes on

the music staff.

Third Grade: We are practicing reading, writing and per-

forming melodic patterns: la, sol, and mi; and rhythmic pat-

terns using ta, ti-ti, and ta rest.

4th / 5th Grade: We are continuing to learn

about J. S. Bach. Last month, we celebrated

the 200th birthday of our national anthem.

We are working on understanding and sing-

ing the words. Do you know all the words to The Star-

Spangled Banner? Don’t be surprised if your children quiz

you.

FROM THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER, Mr. Ahern:

STAYING HEALTHY: Some benefits to exercise include

stronger muscles and bones, a decrease in the risk of

developing type 2 diabetes, possibly

lower blood pressure and blood cho-

lesterol levels, and having a better

outlook on life. Remember to get 60

minutes of physical activity each day.

You can use the walking trail here at

Huber Ridge after 4:00 on school

days. Keep moving!

From the Art Room with Mr.

Britton:

After beginning the year looking at Art

from various cultures around the world, the

students are now starting to focus on specif-

ic visual art principles and concepts. Grades 1 and 2 are still

learning about perspective and exploring this concept by creat-

ing landscapes and pop-up books. Grades 3, 4, and 5 are

now exploring 3-dimensional shapes and forms through sculp-

tural works of art. Grade 3 is creating 3-dimensional Egyptian

style pyramids. Grade 4 is nearly finished with their clay gar-

goyles and now beginning to learn about color theory and how

the color wheel works. Grade 5 is using plaster to create 3-

dimensional figures based on the work of the artist Keith Haring.

From the Clinic…..

Please remember that all prescription medicines must have signed

doctor’s orders and must be kept in the clinic for administration.

Prescription inhalers may be stored in the student’s

backpack if the proper form is on file in the clinic. Any

Over-The Counter medicines must have a form on file

in the clinic, remain in the original container, and

properly stored in the student’s backpack. Feel free to

contact the clinic for any questions or needed forms.

From the Counselor Corner with Mr. Rex:

This month during my classroom guidance lessons, we have been focusing on the Golden Rule, which is to treat other people how you would want to be treated. Across grade levels, we have done different activities focusing on the traits that make someone a good friend. Be sure to ask your child about words like "considerate", "kind", "honest" or "respectful". Their responses might surprise you, I know there were definitely some that surprised me!

Also, with the holidays right around the corner, this is a good place for me to mention that there is a lot of assistance out there for any family in need. Both the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (W.A.R.M) and Wester-ville Caring and Sharing offer vari-ous forms of help. Huber Library Update The library has been an exciting place at Huber Ridge. The year

began with several shelves of new books for the li-

brary. Students have been finding exciting new reading materi-

als on all sorts of subjects: mythology, football, and disgusting

animals are just a few. There is plenty of new fiction too, in-

cluding The Zero Degree Zombie Zone by Patrik Bass.

Classes have been competing to be the Most Refreshing Class

in the school, earning ice cubes for good behavior to fill up

their lemonade glasses on our library bulletin board. There will

be a winner at each grade level, and one for the

entire school. Find out who the winners are next

month.

Finally, the media center played host to the Fall

Scholastic Book Fair. A special thanks to the PTA and its vol-

unteers for planning such a successful event. The students dis-

covered new authors to love and books to treasure. It was great

to see them so excited about reading.

Food Drive

Huber Ridge Elementary will be participating

in a food drive

that will begin Monday, November 10th and

run through Friday, November 21.

Grade levels are asked to collect the following:

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd: canned pineapple

3rd, 4th, and 5th: ketchup

All items donated will be delivered to

WARM (Westerville Area Resource Ministry).

The WARM food drive teaches children a valuable lesson about

sharing with others who are less fortunate, and we are able to help

the community at the same time.

Together, we CAN make a difference in Westerville.
