Thriller is a genre with lots of different films stemming from it. It is 5th on the top-grossing genres 1995-2012 on the website http://the-numbers.com

As this table shows Comedy is the top grossing genre. They have released 1,751 movies; however there market gross of $25,580,901 is significantly lower than the thriller genre that is 5th in the top-grossing genres making 561 movies they have a average gross of $27,621,631. As the comedy genre has created 1,751 films this would suggest that they just create films all the time, which could not be of good quality. As this table shows thrillers where not a popular genre during 1995-1996 and 2003. However there was a steady rise of tickets sold from then on. In 2010 -2012 ticket sales where considerably rising in 2012 the tickets sold where at the highest they have ever been since 1995 nearly reaching 200,000,000. This suggests Thrillers are increasingly getting more popular. Also the market share was at its highest in 2012.

2010

In 2010 Inception was the highest rank of thriller, their theatrical distributor was Warner Bros and had a rating of PG-13. This does limit the audience, as A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them.

2012

In 2012 the ticket sales were the highest they have ever been as shown previously in the main table. The Hunger Games were the highest ranked film in 2012. This could be due the fact that the Hunger Games are also well known novels, giving the brand a wide audience. This could suggest why it is top ranked. The second ranked was Taken 2. This could be ranked highly as it is a sequel and has a large revenue stream.
