Christmas in July

Glenda Patterson has proposed holding a Christmas in July club social function at the Bunbury Turf Club next July.

Proposed date is 11/07/2020. A quick show of hands for people who would attend the function indicated that there was some sup-port for this idea. To be discussed further.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT JULY 2019

Busso Mid-week 17th

Yes, a beautiful winters day 9 degrees Celsi-us but a sunny day, good turn up.

This time we went to Donnybrook via Tuart Forrest, Capel, Kirup, Upper Capel Rd then into Donnybrook for a pie & coffee. I de-parted the Busso group at Donnybrook.

This was John’s first run as the Busselton planner of routes. Thanks again for the day out.

17th July 2019 Ride.

Some 20 members braved the clear cold day for what turned out to be a great ride.

A few Bunbury riders joined in, some at Busselton and two at Capel, destination - Donnybrook Bakery - for the usual coffee, pies etc.

The 58K direct road distance was expanded to 118K being via Tuart Drive, Capel, Good-wood Road, Upper Capel Road, Kirup, Brookhampton Road, Wildmere Road to Charlie Creek and then the highways to Don-nybrook.

A long ride, especially for some of our older members, as was evident by the stampede to the car park public toilets upon arrival.

Thanks to Terry Germain (again) for being our TEC and to all the corner markers. We are getting very good with course manage-ment.

John Lewin

The new Busselton Group Liaison Officer

24th July Mid-week

Yes, a drizzle day for a ride, just very light rain in Bunbury but the closer we got to Busselton the harder the rain came.

5

But it was good to get out on the bikes and take the back roads to Terry’s house and have morning tea with him. We picked up Phill in Capel and made our way to Terry’s with the urn running it was good to have a cuppa and good to see some of the Busso boys turn up as well.

As per normal check out the collection and see what is new. Thanks for having us Terry. Still a good day out.

Winter Lunch Run Pre-48

What a top day out it was sunny not that cool, a few people checking out ideas to get their M20s back on the road taking lots of pictures.

A good turnout, first stop was to see restored petrol pumps a lot of hours and money have been poured into these but not good enough to have a place in the house. Says she who must be obeyed.

Next stop was Mumbalup Pub for lunch via a few back roads, lunch was good if you or-dered 1st but for the people who took their time took in a little longer, nice pub food and a nice place to be on a Saturday afternoon.

The ride back through the Ferguson Valley is always good. Good to see a veteran on the run. No major problems a good day out. Thanks, Murray, for organising it.

2019 Black Dog Ride Around Australia

The 10th anniversary of Steve Andrew’s ride around Australia (which resulted in the for-mation of Black Dog Ride) was held on the 26th July 2019 with a similar long-distance event. As with Steve’s ride, this one also started and will finish in Busselton and cover all mainland states and territories.

A few our club members helped with the course management on day one of the ride, Peter Whiteside, Tom French, John Hilton, Dave Price, Tony Allen, Geoff Miller, Keith Graham and Phil Bussanich all assisted with parking and corner marking.

On behalf of BDR I would like to sincerely thank these members for their time and con-tribution to this great charity ride event.

A special mention and tribute to Peter White-side. He rode his trusted BSA for part of the course, to the morning tea stop at Karridale, a magnificent 101k. Full credit to Peter for do-ing 0.6361% of the Around Australia Ride. Well done.

John Lewin

Black Dog Ride Committee Member

John had an encounter with a kangaroo which he survived but is convalescing for 3 weeks get better soon. Bring chocolate & flowers.

Looks like Peter has been voted back in to look after the Busso Boys Mid-week Rides.

JC Wednesday Special Run 31st July

The weather was too good not to have a ride, so a ride was entered to the events we got 5 people turned up, so we went to Collie via Sandlewood Rd to Collie and came home Pile Road. As you do, stop for a pie & coffee for a change. It was a top day out thanks JC for the idea.

7th August Busso Mid-week Ride

No rain today just a little cool, Peter took the ride today as John is still broken, but he did catch up at Sensations Cafe. Today we had a special guest Trevor had a bad time and can’t ride his bike anymore, so JC came to the res-cue with his sidecar.

6

Today’s ride was around Chapman Hill, Tuart Forest and back to Sensations for coffee & scones. All up a good day out thanks Peter for the day out.

Captain’s Run 11th August

Another top day out on the bikes, a little cool because of the clear sky, 15 bikes turned up.

The ride to Heron Point was on the way tak-ing the back roads through cow country and few parts of gravel less than 2 km all up.

We got to Heron Point, just one of those plac-es you always drive past. After 25 minutes headed to Waroona where we stopped at Pin-jarra Bakery (still Waroona) with the bikes parked out the back JC thought everybody was hiding, but he found them.

Stayed for 45 minutes then headed back through Coolup, Yaloop then Kemerton. All up a good day out.

Next Month’s Rides

GENERAL BUSINESS

Michael Rock

The “Come and Try Day” for veteran and vin-tage bikes has been brought forward to 24 November 2019. The day will be held in the road train assembly area and is a good safe way to try out different bikes and get some feedback about your bike(s) from other club members.

Phil Bussanich

Bought up the vintage bike race meetings to be held at the Collie Motorplex over the next month to six weeks and encouraged club members to go along to these meetings and support the sport.

Russell Jeffrey then gave an update on the race meetings planned and suggested that in-terested club members could volunteer to help as flag marshals etc for these meetings.

He stated that any volunteers would be wel-come and well looked after.

Michael Rock then backed up Russell’s asser-tion that the volunteers would be well looked after.

Ann Offer

Before the meeting, 2 flyers were handed out by Glenda Patterson. One set out the dates and locations for the Ladies Luncheons and the other for the Ladies

7

Christmas Dinner, to be held on the 26 No-vember 2019 at the Lord Forrest Hotel.

Ann called for more ladies to attend these events if possible.

Rob Harrold

Ray Buck had gone into hospital for a knee replacement and was expected to be there for 4 days.

Terry Germain

Called for something different to be tried for club meeting auctions, as the items were do-nated for the benefit of the club, but the club was getting minimal or no real benefit due to the low prices that the items were sold for.

He suggested that a value could be set for in-dividual items and if that value was not achieved then the item could be sold through the club later.

Terry has a range of old tyres available for sale with the proceeds to go to the club.

The tyres can be purchased by ringing Terry on 0419 554 735. Tyres can then be delivered at the next club meeting.

Terry called for members to support a charity ride, in aid of South West Counselling Ser-vice. The ride is to be held in Busselton on the 28 August 2019.

Michael Rock

Said that tables would be set up at future meetings where members could show parts etc they have for sale or swap, or to display items they were restoring.

Next month, one table would be used for all members to bring in any interesting items which were unusual for members to guess

what they were. The tables could be booked at nominal cost (possibly a gold coin dona-tion).

VIP Member Introductions

The VP Introduced John (Paddy) Keenan, born in Singapore and educated in Belfast. John has had an eventful life, from stints in the merchant marine (where his ship sank be-neath him), to jackarooing on a farm in Es-perance, to 25 years in the Australian Army (because he liked slouch hats), where he spent time as a motorcycle riding instructor.

His first bike was a Douglas, which his father made him take back, so he had to settle for a 50cc Honda Steppy.

He has had several different bikes over the years and plans to have bikes for many more. He currently owns and rides a handful of vin-tage bikes including his crowd favourites, WLA Harley and 741 Indian in Army trim.

The interview concluded with John’s tale of the difficulties with legally parking motorcy-cles in Donnybrook.
