July4,2021,14thSundayinOrdinaryTimeFr.Gerry’sMessage:Thisyear’sFourthofJulyisgoingtobeverymemorable,yeswearestilldealingwiththecoronaviruspandemic,butunlikelastyear,whenallourpubliccelebrationsweremuchdifferent–nobiggatherings,paradescancelled,fireworksmuted;wewillprobablycelebratealittlemorerelaxed,familiesandfriendscomingtogetherafteralongtime,itisgoingtobe‘realindependence’.Independenceisthemostpreciouspresentonecanenjoy,soleteachonetaketimetoreflectonwhatexactlyindependencemeans.TheFreedom,theLiberty,theRightsweallenjoycannotbeboughtbymoney,theyareGodgivenanditisourresponsibilitytodefendthem.So,beforewecelebrateIndependenceDay,weshouldbegratefultoourlovingGodandtothosewholaidandstilllaydowntheirlivestodefendourfreedomsandliberties.ThePreambletotheU.S.Constitutionstatesthatourcitizenrycametogethertotrytoformamoreperfectunion.WeknowwearefarfrombeingPerfect,divisionsstillexist,mistrustofeachotherisgrowing,someinstancesofinjusticemaystillbehappening.Butthatdoesnotmeanweshouldgiveuptryingtobemoreperfectasindividuals,asChristians,ascitizensandasanation.Encouragedbythegoodnesswewitnesseverydayinthelivesofsomany,weshouldexpressourhopethatthefailuresofourpastdonothavetodefineusasindividuals,asacommunityorasanation,butthatwecanachievegreaterequalityandjustice.

SothisFourthofJuly,letusthankGodfortheblessingswehavereceived,andaskforthecourageweneedasfollowersofChristandasfaithfulcitizenstoensurethatallGod’schildrenaretreatedwiththedignitythatistheirdueandaregiventheirequalopportunitytoseekoutlife,libertyandpursuitofhappiness.Leteachoneofusmakeapromisetoourselvesthataslongaswelive,wewillhelpAmericagrowintoabetterNationwitheachpassingday.

July4,2021,14thSundayinOrdinaryTimeFatherGerry’sHomily:Itishurtfultoberejectedbyanyone.Butitisparticularlyhurtfultoberejectedbyone’sownpeople.JesusinToday’sGospelisrejectedbyHisownpeople,inHisowntown.ThisgospelpassagesaysHecametoHisnativeplace,andwhentheSabbathcameHebegantoteachinthesynagogue,andalltherewereastonishedwhentheyheardHim.OnewouldimaginethenthatitwouldhavebeenthemostobviousthingintheworldforthemtoacceptHimassomeonespecialsentbyGod.Buttheoppositehappened.TheyrefusedtoacceptHimjustastheyrefusedtolistentotheprophetEzekielaswereadinthefirstreading.Jesuswasamazedattheirlackoffaith.HegreatlydesiredtohelpHispeople,butHewasunabletodoso.Youcannothelppeopleagainsttheirwill.Hewassaddenedbutnotangered.Rejectioncaneasilyturnintoangerandevenbitterness.Probablyallofushaveexperiencedalittleofthis.Wehavewantedtohelpsomeone,butourhelpwasrefused.Wefeelfrustratedandhelpless.Whenwemeetwithrejectionwemaybetemptedtosay:’that’sit.I’mfinished’.‘Idonotwanttohaveanythingtodowiththatperson’.Wemaydecidenottohelporcareanymore.Itistoopainful.Jesusdidnotreactlikethis.Hedidnotbecomeembittered.HedidwhatlittleHecouldinNazareth–Hecuredsomesickpeople.ThenwearetoldthatHewasamazedattheirlackoffaith.So,HedecidedtotakehislightandHisgiftselsewhere.WhywouldtheyhavebeensoprejudicedagainstJesus?OnereasonwasthatHewastoohuman.TheyknewhismotherMaryandrelatives.ThepeopleofNazareththoughttheyknewJesus.TheimagetheyhadofHim,whichtheyheldonto,becameanobstacletotheiracceptingJesus,andHisteaching.FortheJewsofHisowntowntheirmainquestionwas‘how?’HowcouldHebefromGod?Jesuswouldhavebeentoohuman,tooweakforthem.TheywereexpectingaMessiahwhowoulddestroytheRomancolonialpower.Theyhopedforsomeonemorepowerfulorpolitical.AnotherreasoncouldwellhavebeenthattheydidnotbelievethatoneoftheirowncouldrevealsuchalovingGodtothem.TheirimageofGod,likeoursforsometimes,wasofaGodwhopunishedbadpeopleandrewardedgood.ButJesusrevealedatotallyloving,compassionate,andforgivingGod.QuitedifferentfromtheGodtheywereusedto,ortheyweretaughttobelievebytheirreligiousleaders.Jesus,likeEzekiel,runsintotheresistanceofthosewhorefusetohearthewordofGod,whichinvitesthemtoleavetheiroldsecurityandchangetheirways.TheyfeltsecureintheirimageofGodandthereligiousbeliefstheywereusedto.Thiscanbeequallytrueforus.IfanyofuswantstotakeJesusseriouslythenwewillbechallengedtoletgoofallthatisnotlifegivinginourlives,ofourfalsesecurities.Hewillinviteustorepentofanyunforgivingattitudeinourhearts,anyunjustbusinessdealings,anyrelationships,orbehaviorthatarecontrarytothecallingwehavefromGod.AllChristiansarecalledtobeprophetsanddisciples,tobearwitnesstoChristandHisteachingthroughourentirelives.Itisahighcallingforallofusandnotatalleasy.Sadly,wewillfacerejection.ButlikeEzekiel,Paul,andJesus,willwehavethecouragetokeeponwitnessingtoJesuswhenpeoplemayevendisplaycontemptoroutrightrejectionofusasChristians?LetusallowthegraceandpowerofGodtouseusevenwhenweareweakorwhenwefaceobstaclesfromthosewhowanttostopusfromspreadingtheGoodNewsofGod’skingdom.ThepowerofGodisuponus.Hispresenceisamongus.Histruthisinourheartsandonourlips.Wepraytodaythatwedonotletourownhumanityorthatofanyoneelsekeepusfromhearing,proclaimingandlivingintheTruthoftheGospelteachingsofourLord.
