June 17, 2018– 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel, Jesus compared the Kingdom of heaven to a seed growing. Growth, as we know, is a slow process that needs a lot of patience and support. The seed has to germinate, to sprout, then matures. Christ used this parable to teach that the Kingdom of God may be small and insignificant but like the mustard seed, it grows until it turns into a comforting, welcoming tree. So too our parishes, Jesus says. They should turn into harbors of goodness and mercy and this happens in the practice of our self-giving for the sake of the kingdom. We can never let a partial glance at the way things are plunge us into hopelessness. By faith, and patient endurance, we know that we are growing into the people whom God has called us to be. Of course, the growth of the Kingdom depends first and foremost on God. However, our active participation as individuals, families and parish communities help make this world a “little heaven” where love, justice, truth and genuine freedom – the signs of God’s kingdom - prevail. Cynicism and negative thinking are shortsighted. Our families and our parishes have grown and will grow when we give our lives for the kingdom, when we continue to share our time, talent and treasure so that we can continue to fulfill our mission to spread the JOY OF THE GOSPEL, when we become shelter for those who are searching and harbors of goodness for those who reach out their hand in need.
Somebody once said: “A word of love gives inspiration to life, a word of care gives happiness to the heart, but the word of God gives direction and meaning to our lives.”
Let us then pray for the grace to be active participants in building the Kingdom here and now by what we say and by what we do. Amen. From Fr. Steve
