O n our first morning in Havana, we realised something quiteshocking. There was no real evidence of food. Our breakfastwas a bread roll and a fried egg, which our landlady
explained, was all that had been available. She promised thatmañana there would be fruit. Resisting the temptation to tell herthat it’s more than they get in my house in affluent England, we setoff for a stroll around Havana.
The London Boyfriend had lived in Havana for three monthsduring the ‘Special Period’ after the Soviet Union collapsed whenmost Cubans subsisted on a diet of sugar and water and, indeed,The London Boyfriend had to fly to Jamaica to eat before he died ofstarvation. He was therefore quite nonchalant about the lack of food.
We soon discovered that it was much better to eat at TheLandlady’s house because the state-owned restaurants were staffedby indifferent state-paid waiters, serving potentially life-threateningfood. There, the only apparent clientele were the swarms of flies –also starving – hovering around the door hoping that some foolwould come in and order something.
In spectacular contrast, the food at ourLandlady’s house was some of the best I’ve evereaten, as was the food at the second house westayed at in the country. I can honestly say that,for a country with no ingredients, they havesome of the best cooks in the world. Mostshocking to me was the fact that in Cuba, ifone’s a bit peckish, you can’t just pop into ashop to buy a Mars Bar or a bag of crisps. Suchthings don’t exist and as a result, Cubans are aslim, healthy and beautiful race. Ironically, most of the youngerCubans we spoke to craved Big Macs and bling, although we didour best to persuade them that this particular grass is not greener.
On our second night, courtesy of the daughter of the house –absolutely a girl after my own heart – we managed to stay out ‘til4.30am, arriving home to the disapproval of our Landlady whocalled us all ‘Emborrachos’ – Drunkards – her own daughterincluded. It is true that what Cuba lacks in the way of food, it morethan compensates for with its endless supplies of rum and beer.Alas, in order to get into the house, we had to ring the bell andwake the Landlady while her daughter – quite sensibly – hid aroundthe corner… Home from home.
L ast week I wrote about how fun was very important to me. MyFarm Town exploits are now seriously good, I am an ‘InspirationalFarmer’, it tells me when I log on. It still puts a smile on my face
and after a few years of not doing an awful lot of smiling that wasworth its weight in gold, or should I say cropped potatoes.
But recently things have taken a turn for the better and right now Icould out Pollyanna, any Pollyanna, in a head-to-head Pollyannacontest. I am indeed walking on air, smiling at strangers andattracting the strangest of looks as a consequence. Oh alright, Ialways attract the strangest of looks.
It started a few months back,early February and ever sincethere have been little tell talesigns in my column. Andplease, anyone who thinks thatthat was a usual slice of AKdouble entendre is this timevery wrong.
The first mention was in a reviewof L’Eglise on Valentine‘s eve. Sincethen Mr R has been cropping up herewith increasing regularity. To be frank hehas been cropping up everywhere.
We have both been very sensible about it,declaring that we are having fun but neitherlooking for anything more. And it has worked onthose terms rather well. So well in fact that thestatus has now changed.
On Monday night we went to the Latest Awards together in The Parlure and had a ripping good time. Despite the rain theatmosphere was up-beat and summery. And I admit that I hadperhaps a little too much to drink.
At the end of the evening we walked off hand in hand in the rainand in the twitten by the YMCA Mr R told me that he loved me. I dropped my umbrella. I admit that I had already mentioned that Ifelt this a few days earlier, but no, it was mutual. So there you haveit, Andrew Kay is in love, please handle him with care and forgivehim for grinning like the Cheshire cat all the time. And if you see usout together, then say hello beacuse we are now officially lovers.Hooray for love!

Idaren’t say it for fear of it ending… I am having a good phase! Thetoddler is being adorable. I’m looking at her all day thinking ‘awwyou‘re so cute’. Instead of my dead tired eyes imploring her to just
be quiet for a few minutes. She is whingeing rarely and is beinggenuinely kind and nice.
‘I make you HAPPY!‘ she said the otherday, bless her. I don’t think I am doinganything that much different. Maybe I am happier.
She gets me a towel when I am in thebath. She kisses me after breakfast. She says,‘snuggle me!’ An old woman on the bus waswearing thick tan tights with sandals, ‘Mummy!..That woman has no toes!” She keeps making me laugh.
Is this what people mean when I moan and folk always say theclassic; “Well at least you have your daughter”? I always used to think,“Um, hello! That’s the problem!” Imagining I would be so less wearywithout daily toddler battles, then only to have her typically detest mewhen she’s a teenager. It all seemed so thankless and pointless.
That sounds awful, but it wasn’t my choice to be a single parent somaybe it’s taken me this long to accept it. When friends started havingmore children, I was like “Why?”
I wonder if I have had some sort of postnatal blues. A friend sayswhen they turn three, it all gets bit easier, and you can have properchats with your child and really feel a connection. Some dads don’tfeel bonded with their child when they’re tiny. Neither did I. It wasjust work to be done. Change nappies, wipe bum (baby’s), feed her,and feed myself if I remembered. Now her lovely personality isshining through.
I get happily knocked sideways by the lovely things she says andfeel closer than ever. Perhaps bonding was affected by the fact that thefirst person to hold the baby was not me, but her dad. (Even thoughhe’d left me, he bullied his way into the birth.)
Then hours later at midnight, after having my body sewn backtogether, everyone had left me; I was alone in a dark hospital wardwith what looked a rat in a blanket. To any disillusioned new mums,don’t worry; it does get easier and you will enjoy it one day.
I ’ve shown The Boy The Book of Comparisons. This is similar toTheGuinness Book of Records, but compares everything from weight,size, volume, speed, and so on, in the natural and engineered world.
The Boy is in heaven. Even the quote on the cover sounds like him:‘If a flea were the size of a man, how far could it leap?’ I know I’vetalked about The Boy’s obsession with scale before, but I can‘t notdo it again. It would be like writing a column on Formula One andnot mentioning cars.
As we look at current and extinct animals squaring up to each other,The Boy asks: ‘Was this book around in the Cretaceous period?’ I checkinside the cover. ‘No, published in 1980.’ He nods, understanding.
It features diagrams like fitting the whole of life into a year, wherethe human race came into existence 14 seconds before midnight onNew Year‘s Eve. (We’re now in 2009, so let’s call it 15 seconds.)
I imagine a tight editorial rein would havebeen needed or things could have got out ofhand – the gestation of mammalsdemonstrated by a stick of rock, the history ofChristianity in a triple jumper’s leap, that sortof thing. Some still slipped through. We nowknow a fast-running tap would take 308 daysto fill St Paul’s Cathedral, and how many sugarlumps (ten, followed by 27 noughts) areequivalent to the earth’s volume. Sweet.
Just as with any of these non-sequential books, The Boy has createda strict running order. (It seems the template is set on the first read,cutting a groove we can never escape from.) First the page of vehicleswith dots alongside to indicate their capacity. How many people fit inthat taxi? Four. The QE2? Two thousand, nine hundred and thirty-one.He asks the same questions, not because he can’t remember theanswers but because he likes them so much. In response, he has twoexpressions: a look of delighted surprise straight out of a clown’s guidebook – or a knowing nod and a slow repeat of the correct answer.
The routine continues. We look at the quantity of eggs produced bydifferent creatures, the respective height of dinosaurs, then we endon the page with a life-size bird-eating spider. I walk the book scarilyup the arm of the chair because that’s what I did the first time.

Peter James is probablyBrighton’s most famousliving writer, the creator of
the Roy Grace detective thrillersset in Brighton, and his fans areeagerly awaiting the release on11 June of his fifth in the series,Dead Tomorrow.
It is a career turn that hasmade him an authority onpolice work and forensic scienceand a close ally of SussexPolice. He is also a successfulscreenwriter and film producer;his hits include the Al Pacinoversion of A Merchant of Venice.
Unlike many Brightoncelebrities, Peter was born here,the son of Cornelia James, theroyal glove maker, and heworked in the business beforespending a couple of years as ascreenwriter in the USA. Henow divides his time betweenNotting Hill and the countrysidenear Lewes. He is anunapologetic fitness freak,going on a five mile run on theDowns or Hyde Park every day.
How did you get your big break?
In 1987 out of a tragedy when afriend‘s son was killed in a car
smash and the family startedgoing to a medium. It gave me adark idea – I realised people wentto a medium to get comfort. Butwhat if you went to a medium tocontact your son and discoveredhe had a very dark side and hadmurdered his girlfriend? Thatnovel was called Possession,went to number one here andwas translated into 23 languages.It established me as a novelist.
What is your career highlight?
Writing the Roy Grace series. Iread Brighton Rock as a teenagerand dreamed of one day writinga crime novel set in Brighton.But I never dreamed this novelwould become a series andinternational bestseller publishedin 30 languages – soon a TVseries as well. I love writingthese novels and the great andprivileged relationship I enjoy

Hotel Du Vin because it has asense of style and occasion,good food, a great bar and reallynice outside spaces. Sam‘s at 1Paston Place is really good andterrific value. The Karma Bar is agreat venue – funky and classy,and I still hugely like the bar atBrowns. But come on Brighton,we need valet parking. Myfavourite restaurant will be theone that starts offering this! It ishappening more in London andapart from the convenience, itreally adds a sense of style.
What‘s the best thing about
living in Brighton?
A vast combination of things. Asa crime writer it is a hugemelting pot with almost everykind of villain under the sun.One of our blessings is althoughwe have all the best elementsthat make a city, we don‘t haveinnercity gun and knife crime. Itjust gets better every year. It is afantastic place, close to London,surrounded by some of themost beautiful countryside inworld and with that gloriousiconic coastline. I pray the WestPier will be brought back to life.
What is the worst?
The ghastly Royal SussexCounty Hospital which is acomplete disgrace – apart fromthe modern kids‘ wing. Whyshould the citizens of thisamazing place have to put upwith a hospital that is utterly notfit for purpose. I also loathe thestupidity of the traffic policies.The council have waged war oncars for so long they haveseriously damaged trade. Is itany wonder we have no qualitydepartment store or five-starhotel? People prepared to spendserious money are never goingto come by bus, train or bike.

iPhone for business
Apple’s iPhone is seeing increased adoption in the commercial sector.Its one per cent hold of the global business market is increasing asmore people bring iPhones to work and more business applicationsare made available. Apple reports the device has been implemented asa business smartphone by Kraft Foods, while Nike and Disney havepromised to support it. SaaS provider Salesforce.com reports 80,000sales of its customer relations management iPhone app.
New Asus laptops
Asus has revealed UK pricing and shipping details for the three newlaptops in its U Series, which boast performance gains, light monitoringtechnology and elegant design.Two of the new notebooks, the U20 andU50/UX50, are based on Intel‘s consumer ultra low voltage (CULV)platform, which the firm said contributed to greener and more costeffective laptops. Contributing to the power saving abilities is Light-in-Motion, software that automatically adjusts screen brightnessdepending on ambient light. Asus said the backlit LED display requires50 percent less power than traditional LCD panels and is free frommercury. Asus was also keen to play up the U Series as ‘thin and light‘.The U20 is the lightest model at 1.78kg, while the U50 measures21.6mm at its narrowest point. Other features include a webcam, Wi-Fi,Gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth connections, 4GB RAM memory and upto a 500GB hard drive. Pricing starts at £799 for the U20 and £999 forthe U50/UX50. Both models will be available this month. Pricing andavailability for the final unit, the U80, is yet to be confirmed.

Microsoft has made Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) available for download.The 348Mb download is a massive bug fix, encompassing all theupdates since Vista SP1 was released. New and enhanced featuresinclude a revamped Windows Search, support for Bluetooth 2.1 andthe option to burn Blu-ray discs from within Windows. Users who wishto install SP2 must have SP1 installed first. A Russian internet investment firm has invested $200million inFacebook, giving the social-networking company a cash buffer duringthe recession and reckoning its value at $10billion. Digital SkyTechnologies, which has invested in leading Russian web propertiessuch as Mail.ru and Vkontakte.ru, will take close to a 2 per cent stake inFacebook in exchange for preferred stock. The new valuation is$5billion lower than when Microsoft invested $240million in Facebook,in return for a 1.6percent stake, in 2007.

Spam levels rose by five per cent in April to reach over 90 per cent ofall email, according to the latest figures from cloud-based securityvendor MessageLabs. The firm's monthly Intelligence Report foundthat spammers are increasingly sending unsolicited emails fromwebmail accounts hosted by legitimate providers.
