MOJO

Page 3: magazine analyse

Front cover

MOJO targets an older audience so that is why the magazine is kept original and large letters are used a swell as a younger picture because that’s what they will see him as. The Front cover is very dark which gives a serious feeling. The main picture, a medium shot, is old and is giving the main attention to the largest figure it is also used to convey the main story which in this case is Paul McCartney, the men in the background are the rest of his former band the Beetles. The side headings are new bands or solo artists who might have brought out a new CD or single. The side headings on the right are headlines of famous people. The mast head is large to catch the customers eye. Most of the important titles, or the left third, is on the right side because that’s the side the customers going to see when on the stores shelf. The sky line runs across the top of the page, it is a special attraction to the customers.

Contents• The heading is the same font as the front cover

of the magazine. The background is of Bob Marley a famous reggae singer who is leaning on the inside of an arch way. He is the background because he is one of the articles listed in the contents he also has a pull quote at the bottom of the page that describes and emphasises a certain theme of an old photo. The background is in black and white which makes it look so much better. The numbers are large so the customer can navigate their way around the magazine. The contents titles each have a description which they clarify the article. The contents can also be away for advertising as it is the most read page in the magazine, there isn't any advertising I this contents. The date and issue number are in the contents when they are usually on the Front cover.

Double page spread

• This double page spread is on the main article of Paul McCartney and the Beetles. The articles focuses on his time with the beetles and his solo career in single. This double page spread is split equally between writing and photographs, this will be because a picture speaks a thousand words and because there are no other living band members. The pictures are of the Beetles and of Paul McCartney with other famous men. These help by showing what he has done in his career, they portray him as happy and serious to portray what his career was like. The article seems more like an interview as it has lots of quotes from Paul McCartney. The Pull quote is about his CDs. The article is kept simple because it is aimed at an older audience. I like the layout of the article and how the pictures are grouped together to create a montage.

We can tell instantly by this due to the many famous faces from many well known films. The masthead is written in large classic writing. The main story is plastered in the middle of the magazine in big and bold writing. The famous faces around the side are giving the reader a slight glimpse of which movies will be in the chart. There are smaller articles towards the bottom which focus more on the classical side for instants there is an article about Vaughn Williams and how he changed cinema for ever using an orchestra.

Contents

• The first thing I noticed when looking at this contents was the ‘lord of the rings’ photo and the little pull quote from the composer of the orchestra from the film this is on the contents because it relates to the main story. The main stories are page numbered and the headlines in Bold so the readers can find the article they would like to read. The text is kept classic to stay with the fashion of the magazine. There is a picture by-line from the editor describing what he has done to the magazine and features that he has improved. The Headline is the same font as the main headline on the front cover. The contents are layed out around the image and picture by-line. The contents are layed out into four columns mainly kept to the right side of the page. The contents is used to advertise as well on this contents its advertising its own magazine.

Double page spread• This article is mainly based on orchestras,

composers and soloists. The Articles main point is about the famous pianist and composer Paul Lewis playing a well known Beethoven song. The article is layed out in a classic newspaper style with 4 columns and a lead image. The imaged used is to convey Paul Lewis playing alongside the BBC symphony orchestra to one of the most famous composers of all time Beethoven. The pull quote is from Paul Lewis explaining the feeling and understanding of playing such a fine, gentle piece of music. The Headline is two words describing John Lewis and how good he really is, how he has raised the bar so high its become the benchmark. The Background has chords flowing over the heading to show how the music breaks out from paper to music. The Journalist describes John Lewis almost as if he is a revolutionary extraordinaire, he writes about him as if he was Beethoven him self. I like the way the chords are almost playing in the background as it gives a real affect over the article.

Kerrang

Page 11: magazine analyse

Front cover

• Ker rang is an international music company, they are one of the biggest selling magazines in the world. This magazine is one of hundreds that come out every week. The Mast head is all cracked up which shows it rebellion like its teenage audience. The layout of the cover is quite messy with pictures and articles scattered all over, this makes it look great especially to teenagers who are naturally messy and rebellious. The magazine is kept colourful which gives it a rebellious feeling. The main article is of a band called ‘Lostprophets’ who are a emo, rock band this is why the lead image has the main singer, in a medium shot, in dark clothing, with jewellery and possing in a relaxed, but trying to look cool, kind of pose. Most of the writing has an outline which attracts the eye to it. The pictures are bundled together, it looks like they have just manage to fit all the photos in, this is why the magazine looks messy. They have totally disregarded the third left instead they have put pictures as teenagers enjoy the photos.

Contents

• The contents is kept to the same type of layout as the front cover. The main picture is at a stadium concert it shows the party life almost advertising people to go to concerts. All the writing is put at the bottom put into order of news, live reviews, gig guides and features. The page is kept black and white and goes well with the front page. There are small photos next the article and page number showing the readers what its about. There is also a picture by-line from the editor describing what this issue about, mainly one of the articles he enjoyed reading about.

Double page spread

• The first thing you notice about this double page spread is it is mainly enlarged photos. There isn't much text which shows that teenagers don’t like reading much. This article is about Muse’s visit to Australia. The lead images are focused on single band members singing and playing their music. The layout is quite strange due to the slanted pictures and un equal columns on each page. The journalist describes what happened he describes the band as being really good but as a fan they acted superbly. There is also a little area for the fans who describe what they felt about the concert. This is unusual as non of the other magazines have this instead they have an area of which they interviewed the band.
