Retirement of our of Parish Secretary After almost 16 years as our Parish Secretary, Ruth Villani, will retire on July 3rd when she will begin her long de-served accrued annual leave and long service leave. At the end of her leave (late November) we will have the opportunity for a presentation of thanks to Ruth for her long and faithful service to the Parish and its priests. Hopefully by November we will be able to gather a little more freely for the event which we would be unable to do now under the current restrictions on gatherings. Please keep Ruth in your prayers as she embarks on this journey and transition into retirement.

Appointment of New Parish Secretary Katryna McIntosh has been appointed as our new Parish Office Administrator. Katryna is a parishioner of St. Mary’s Ascot Vale where she has previously worked as the Parish Secretary. She commences with us on 1st July. I know that you will all make Katryna welcome once she joins our Parish team.

Introductory Reflection Today’s readings are very apt for our current times, where many of us are experiencing vulnerability, tension, and unpredictability. Yet as followers of Christ, we are being called to trust in God our Father, who knows us intimately and un-derstands our needs.

Introductory Rites + In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord Jesus, you give us strength when we are weak: Lord, have mercy.

Christ Jesus, you give us courage when we are afraid: Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you give us joy and new heart when we fail : Lord, have mercy.

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glo-ry, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Fa-ther, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Prayer for this Week True and faithful God, you give courage to the fearful and endur-ance to martyrs. Sustain us as fol-lowers of your Son Jesus, that with boldness and conviction we may acknowledge him before the

world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

1st Reading Jeremiah 20:10-13

A reading from the prophet Jere-miah

Jeremiah cried out: "I have be-come a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me. For I hear many whispering: 'Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!' All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. 'Perhaps he can be en-ticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him."'

But the Lord is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my per-secutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be great-ly shamed, for they will not suc-ceed. Their eternal dishonour will never be forgotten.

"O Lord of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the mind; let me see your retribu-tion upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. "Sing to the Lord; praise the Lord! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers."

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm R. Lord, in your great love, answer me

It is for you that I suffer taunts, that shame covers my face, that I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my own mother’s sons. I burn with zeal for your house and taunts against you fall on me. R.

This is my prayer to you, my pray-er for your favour. In your great love, answer me, O God, with your help that never fails: Lord, answer, for your love is kind; in your compassion, turn towards me. R.

The poor when they see it will be glad and God-seeking hearts will

revive; for the Lord listens to the needs and does not spurn serv-ants in their chains. Let the heav-ens and the earth give him praise, the sea and all its living creatures. R.

2nd Reading Romans 5:12-15

A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Romans

Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, so death spread to all because all have sinned. Sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgres-sion of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! The Spirit of truth will bear witness to me, says the Lord, and you also will be my witnesses . Alleluia!

The Gospel Matthew 10:26-33 A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. + Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus summoned the twelve and sent them out with the following instructions: "Have no fear; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.

And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. "Everyone there-fore who acknowledges me be-fore others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny my Father in heav-en."

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflection Spend some time in silent reflection and/or read the homily attached this newsletter.

Prayers of the Faithful Time and again Jesus tells his dis-ciples not to be afraid. Taking his word to heart today, let us pray with confidence as God’s trusting children.

For church communities around the world, that like the prophet Jeremiah they will proclaim God’s word without fear or favour. Lord hear us: R/ Lord, hear our prayer.

For the state and federal govern-ments of Australia, that the eco-nomic recovery they promote will be inclusive, fair and eco-friendly. Lord hear us: R/

For the homeless and poorly housed, that the coronavirus pan-demic and the onset of winter will prompt concerted action to provide adequate social housing. Lord hear us: R/

That Christians deprived of the Eu-charist will deepen their hunger to gather together at the altar - with Christ and with one another. Lord hear us: R/

For children whose reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist has been delayed, that they will look forward all the more to these oc-casions of grace. Lord hear us: R/

For healing mercies for the sick and those in need especially, Re-becca Bolden, Jillian Champness, Martin Stenhouse, Maree Nunan, Joseph Lau, Silvana De Iulio, Car-mel Garonzi, Margaret Canty and for all who are suffering from the

coronavirus or whose lives are severely impacted by it. Lord hear us: R/

For all who have died recently, those who have died from the coronavirus, all whose anniversary occurs at this time and departed family and friends especially Fr. David de Dear, Irene Gillespie, Mary Jackson, Brendan Jones, Pi-no Gelsi, Marcus Fitt, Jack Mul-lane, Maria Dri, Michael Galluccio, Potenciano Catingub, Bruno and Maria Erbrederis: May they see God face to face in the kingdom prepared for them. Lord hear us: R/

God of all grace, in the beginning you fashioned us in your image and in time made us a new crea-tion in Christ. Keep us ever faithful and true. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father…..

Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacra-ment. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my life today. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramental-ly at Mass, come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and remain with me forever. Amen.

Concluding Prayers Almighty and eternal God, our ref-uge in every danger, to whom we turn in our distress; in faith we pray look with compassion on the afflicted, grant eternal rest to the dead, comfort to mourners, heal-ing to the sick, peace to the dying, strength to healthcare workers, wisdom to our leaders and the courage to reach out to all in love, so that together we may give glory to your holy name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the Lord be with us to protect us. May he guide us and give us strength. May he watch over us, keep us in his care, and + bless us with his peace. Amen.

The Angelus The Angel of the Lord de-clared unto Mary; And she con-ceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, etc...

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to your word.

Hail Mary, etc...

And the Word was made flesh: And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary, etc...

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, your Son, was made known by the message of an an-gel, may by his passion and + cross be brought to the glory of his resurrection, through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Conclude with the Prayer to St. Joseph (see front page) ____________________________

21 June 2020 Homily for 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Bill Edebohls

In the Gospel Jesus calls for witnesses, that is, people who are not afraid to be seen as fol-lowers and disciples – in the midst of a sceptical and sometimes hostile world. Fear is one of the things that keeps people subjugated and under control – a common tool of political mas-ters. Fear is also one of the things that keeps Chris-tians from a bold and generous witnessing to the Gospel. Three times Jesus said to the apostles, “Do not be afraid”.

Fortunately, there are always those in the Church who, by the grace of God, are able to overcome fear and witness to the Gospel in the most difficult and dangerous circumstances.

For some it will be standing against institutional-ised injustice and human rights abuses imposed by faithless governments; for others it will be staring down persecution and the threat of death, torture or imprisonment because they are true to their Christian Faith; for others it may be speaking out for what is right and true - just and compassionate - in their own community, workplace or playground.

Every place needs Christian witnesses. Christ says, “Witness to me before the world”. It’s in the world we have to stand up and be counted. It’s not good enough to be secret disciples of Christ. We are called to give public witness to our Christian faith.

In some countries to witness to Christ can still mean putting one’s life in danger. But even when, in countries like our own, that is not the case, we still need witnesses and prophets - because faith and Christian values, the dignity of humanity, and justice for all, including our planet and creation itself, are still being eroded – even on our own doorstep.

What we are likely to face is not so much violence or hostility, but something which is even harder and maybe even more deadly – indifference – complacence – or the unwillingness to even open our eyes to the realities of faithlessness and injustice around us.

To witness in our own culture requires a special kind of courage. It means overcoming our fear of what people will think of us, or say about us.

It means taking those words of the Lutheran Pastor, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who died in a Nazi Concentration Camp, seriously: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

When Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not be afraid,” he wasn’t saying that they should never feel afraid. He knew that at times they would be very afraid just as Jesus himself felt fear in the Garden of Gethsemane. The issue was what fear would do to them. It might paralyse them; make them timid, or worse still, silence them: Unable to fulfil their mission. What Je-sus was doing was encouraging them so that they might move beyond fear.

And, like them, we the disciples and prophets of this age, must move beyond fear – the fear that paralyses and silences.

Fear is real, but it doesn’t have to control us because God cares enough to stand by us through it all. That’s the good news from this week’s Gospel.

Through worship at the Eucharist, faith in the teachings of Jesus, and commitment to loving and caring for each other - saints and martyrs across every generation and century since the first Easter Day have found that Jesus has given them the strength and courage to face down fear and live the joy of the Gospel. That strength, courage and joy can also be yours.

Follow the example of the early Christians and disciples throughout the ages. Live the mys-tery of the Eucharist in your life – poured out in acts of justice, compassion and service. That way of living will protect your soul and calm your fears. You will find, as Jesus says, that God watches you closely, Christ walks by your side, and he will never disown you in the presence of his Father in Heaven.

Climate Action Group Last week we talked of the new habits we’ve all developed during coronavirus lockdown – habits which low-er our carbon footprint and create a more sustainable lifestyle. And we expressed the hope that we all pre-serve these new habits as we come out of lockdown. Franciscan priest and educator, Richard Rohr, recently expressed the same hope. He wrote: through Laudato Si, we are called “to act in response to the ‘cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor’. I must admit that I am often discouraged by the minimal efforts most Chris-tians are willing to make to care for the earth, even at this critical juncture. The pandem-ic has shown our willingness to make sacrifices - at least to some degree—to protect our fellow humans, but we have not shown that same willing-ness to make even small changes to protect or heal the earth. I hope that will change.” (Richard Rohr, Daily Meditations, Our Common Planetary Home, May 17, 2020) Hopefully, we do pre-serve our new ‘lockdown’ habits and continue to devel-op more lifestyle habits which heal and care for the earth and protect our fellow humans. Remember you can always find more infor-mation about this online. Try Australian Religious Response to Climate Change or The Climate Council.
