Metal Bulletin is delighted to announce that it will be launching its inaugural Asian nickel conference in the vibrant city of Jakarta, Indonesia. Given its prominence as a leading nickel exporter and impending impending ban of nickel exports in the country, Indonesia is the ideal place to discuss the key issues facing the nickel industry, both domestically and across the wider Asian region. With the Indonesian ban set to take place next year, there is increasing anticipation over its impact on the nickel market. When will the ban take effect? What will this mean for the region and, in particular, chinese consumption of the ore? Metal Bulletin’s Asian nickel conference will address these questions as well as analysing the regional market issues including nickel’s continuing overcapacity, the shift from sulphide to laterite ore production, new technological developments for laterite processing, the continuing impact of NPI production and the outlook for downstream demand. Metal Bulletin look forward to meeting you all in Jakarta this September.

Nickel prices have continued to disappoint this year, being the most bearish of all the base metals. However, looking forward, prices are likely to increase and see consolidation according to the latest forecasts from Metal Bulletin research. Factors such as capacity closures and implementation of the Indonesian ban will have a tightening effect on prices, boosting the value of nickel to over $20,000 per tonne by the end of 2014.

Recent years have proved tough for nickel producers, but there would seem to be some justification for cautious optimism for a more bullish outlook in the long term, pointing to better times for the nickel industry.
