holding auditions for its upcoming production of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera master-piece Jesus Christ Superstar, which will be performed in November, 2012 at the Capitol Th eatre in Nelson.

Derby Girls Th e West Kootenay Junior Roller Derby Association
(WKJRDA) is the fi rst established Junior League in Brit-ish Columbia. Th e league was founded just last year, in February of 2011 by Krystal Stevenson.
Krystal ex-plains what mo-tivated her. “I was in the early stages of joining a woman’s team myself, when one day, watching my teenage daughter arrive home from
school, I realized what a great empowering sport for young women roller derby would be... I asked my daughter Hope (now Wolf Haley) if she was interested...and she was, for sure! So she Facebooked and emailed all the young women she knew and by the end of the week we held our fi rst junior meeting with 13 young women, my daughter and myself. From there our league now stretches all over the West Kootenay, with girls ranging from ages from 5 to 18.
Th e West Kootenay Junior Roller Derby Association provides girls aged 5 to 18 the opportunity to partici-pate in the cutting edge, competitive sport of fl at track roller derby. All the kids take a skill testing program that is broken down into three diff erent stages....each stage’s goals need to be met before moving to the next. Ultim-ately, the girls are ready to compete in a bout.
WKJRDA has a strong philosophy that is designed to instill positive ideals and help young girls realize their own potential. Th e association strives to create a safe, fun and positive environment where girls can be athletic, in-crease their self-confi dence, forge new friendships and be both self-empowered and self-expressive. Th is is a place where girls learn teamwork, good values, discipline, con-fi dence, interaction and stewardship through the com-petitive sport of fl at track roller derby.
If you have a daughter who may be interested in becom-ing a derby girl, there are practices every Sunday at the Xanadu Roller Rink at the Playmor Junction. Bratz from 2 pm to 3:30 pm and Juniors from 3 to 5 pm.

Interior Health requires Koo-tenay Coop Radio to move its radio tower from its home on the Kootenay Lake hospital roof in Nelson. Th is major move will cost the station at least $10,000. Staff and volunteers at KCR are researching the most feasible op-tion, but the move and invest-ment are inevitable.

Portion Of Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail Closed
Th e Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail, formerly the Burling Northern Santa Fe right of way is currently closed from the Stanley Street entrance in Nelson to Hall Siding until further notice.
Th e closure is due to a slide within the vicinity of the Ravine trestle (Shesnuk Creek). Slide areas can be dan-gerous as there may be an increased likelihood of addi-tional slides or debris fl ows.
Th e closure is also required to prevent encounters with grizzly bears. Black bear and grizzly bear activity is com-mon in the spring and early summer. Always use cau-tion when travelling on the trail system. Travel in groups when possible. Respect all closures. To reduce risk of a bear encounter, make lots of noise and pay attention to your surroundings, especially close to berry patches.
Please do not attempt to view or approach the bears. Bears that learn to approach people, or are approached by people, may be destroyed as a result of an encounter that may become dangerous. Th ank you for your cooper-ation.

Th e Bears Are Out -Keep Your Garbage In!
Spring is here and so are the bears. Th ere have been bear sightings in Nelson and Areas E and F since mid-April. Recently, bear attractants have been causing confl icts be-tween people and bears. A young black bear is entering vehicles on the North Shore, and bears have been reported getting into garbage and bird seed in Blewett.
Last year, 15 black bears were destroyed within the area, including two in the City of Nelson. Most of these animals were destroyed because they were feeding on garbage or fruit. Th e two grizzly cubs that were relocated from the area in 2010 returned in 2011. Th e cubs were consistently eating garbage in Nelson and Blewett and were destroyed aft er charging a resident. An average of 600 bears are destroyed in BC annually – most of these due to poorly managed bear attractants. Th is does not have to happen.
Some tips to remember:Please keep your garbage in a location inaccessible to
bears. If you do not have secure garbage storage, you can freeze the smelly food items until collection or you can take the garbage directly to the landfi ll. You can also use a bear-resistant garbage can (visit bearaware.bc.ca for a list of suppliers).
Bird seed is particularly attractive to bears in the spring season. Birds do not need additional feed in the summer. Bring bird feeders in until November, or they may be-come bear feeders.
Compost, chickens, and pet food are also items that, when managed improperly, become bear attractants.
Please remember that it is illegal to allow bears access to garbage and other bear attractants. Th ere are now signifi -cant fi nes for this off ence under the Wildlife Act. Nelson also has a wildlife attractant bylaw that regulates the pres-ence of bear attractants in the city.
