The latest research is revealing that every cell and organ in our body is an active, boisterous participant in a dynamic exchange of information. Inside us, then, is a veritable cacophony, a massive self-supporting information network. And deciphering these "messages" exchanged between organs is paving the way to new treatments for diseases including cancer, diabetes, and dementia. Utilizing beautiful UHD imagery, this eye-opening series will mark a paradigm-shift from the age-old thinking that the brain is at the center of it all.

In April 2016, Kumamoto was hit by two major magnitude-7 earthquakes. Kumamoto Castle, the city's icon, was severely damaged. However, the damage has unveiled long-lost secrets of the castle's construction. The key parts that withstood the powerful tremors were in fact the castle's oldest sections, built over 400 years ago. Why is this samurai architecture so sturdy? Using a detailed 3D model based on 4K high-resolution drone images, experts study and reveal the secrets of the quake-resistant mega structure.

The genius of Albert Einstein never ceases to allure. Following his autopsy in 1955, Einstein's brain is said to have been sliced and scattered among researchers around the world. Where are the pieces now? NHK goes in pursuit of remnants in Japan, the US, Canada, and Argentina, rediscovering hundreds of photos taken during the autopsy as well as an individual in possession of over 100 fragments. The data set is then brought together to build a 3D CGI, successfully "recreating" Einstein's brain as it would have been in his 20s, when he proposed the theory of relativity. An extraordinary journey and the latest in neuroscience turn a new page in the story of the genius's brain.

August 17, 2017 marked a revolutionary day for astronomy. Gravitational waves from a neutron star merger were detected for the first time. Scientists around the world and 70 observatories immediately began to look for the source, knowing the time in which to do this was ticking away quickly. And thanks to the ensuing international relay from time zone to time zone, images of light from a neutron star merger that generated gravitational waves were captured for the first time in history. This, in turn, yielded scientific breakthroughs in determining the origin of gold and platinum. This program faithfully recreates the scientists’ life-altering two weeks.

250 million years ago, an event occurred that wiped out over 90% of Earth's species. It was the greatest mass extinction the planet has ever known, also referred to as the Permian-Triassic boundary. New research points the blame in an unexpected direction-a

"super-continent." Prior to this Great Dying, the continents had joined to form one giant landmass, drastically altering the earth's magnetic field. Far more cosmic rays rained down, causing global cooling, a "plume winter." This documentary follows research at a volcano in Ethiopia's Great Rift Valley and a cutting-edge excavation survey in Oman. The investigation starts from the bowels of the earth and leads us to the far reaches of space.

The World's Oldest AstronomyAstronomy is thought to have originated mainly in the northern hemisphere in civilizations such as Mesopotamia and ancient Greece. However, this widely held theory is now being overturned. In fact, the indigenous people of the Australian continent claim to be the oldest astronomers in the world. About 5,000 years ago, Aborigines, who had no written language, accurately measured the orbit of the sun with gigantic rocks, learned the positions of constellations, and memorized travel routes for trade. These so-called star maps correspond with the main roads of today. This episode delves into Aboriginal astronomy, which was developed to survive a harsh environment noted for its extremely arid areas, infertile soil, and a lack of plants suitable for agriculture.

Unknown Islamic Astronomy: The Roots of Modern Science

One of astronomy's most revolutionary discoveries is the heliocentric theory, which stated the sun was at the center of the universe. But it has been recently found that this hypothesis by Nicolaus Copernicus was greatly influenced by Islamic astronomy. In fact, many names of the stars are Arabic. Further developing the science from Ancient Greece, Islamic scientists accurately measured the positions of the sun and stars to determine the direction of the holy city of Mecca. With their high expertise, they succeeded to observe the galaxy for the first time in the world, and eventually established their own astronomy, which rose to prominence in the 9th to 15th centuries. This episode looks at the contributions of the sophisticated yet little known Islamic astronomy and charts its journey to Europe.

Dinosaur Extinction-Behind the Asteroid Impact Theory

The asteroid impact theory is now the prevailing theory regarding the main cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. Initially, though, the theory was unpopular. But over time, the tide turned, thanks to the hard work of young, passionate and unknown geologists, and the support of scientists from different fields, which helped produce breakthroughs. The program looks into the initial discovery of a gigantic crater deep in the ocean floor, which proved the asteroid impact theory. Follow the research and evidence-gathering journey that revealed the unimaginable destructive power of the asteroid and helped this theory gain widespread support.

Some would consider the dwarf mongoose the cutest creature on the African savanna. Measuring 25 centimeters in length, they are actually the world's smallest mongooses, living in a land with many predators. They survive by forming packs of about 20 members and observing unique social rules. In and around the anthills they call home, the mongooses follow a rigid hierarchy, where the lowest-ranking member of a pack is responsible for the most dangerous duties. Eating and sleeping are secondary to watching out for enemies and protecting the pack. Why do these animals risk their own lives to serve the other pack members? It is, in fact, all part of an ingenious master plan.

A Tale of Gentle Giants

During summer, the Atlantic coast between northeastern United States and southeastern Canada attracts large sea creatures such as whales and sharks that feed on the dense aggregations of plankton. To help reveal the secrets of these creatures' underwater hunting and behavior, the documentary film crew attached special cameras to 13-meter-long basking sharks and to leatherback sea turtles, which as the world's largest reptile can grow to weigh over one ton. This episode takes a look at the shadowy lives of these giant creatures as the North American waters change from spring to summer.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival brightens up the short summer of northern Japan, enchanting 2.5 million spectators every year. At the heart of the 300-year-old tradition are Nebuta, huge illuminated paper floats featuring legendary heroes and historical figures. We spent a year following two Nebuta artists, a father and daughter, as they compete with each other for the year’s top prize. Asako Kitamura, the first female Nebuta artist, chooses an innovative color scheme for her float. Her father, Takashi, rises to the occasion by raising his game, portraying five protagonists instead of the usual two, all while wrestling with advancing age.

Art brut, or outsider art, expresses the impulses of its creators free of influence from mainstream art, trends, or education. Created solely by the insuppressible genius of the artists, the works of art project an overwhelming aura. In October 2017, a large-scale exhibition featuring 42 Japanese artists was held in Nantes, France. What is it about this art form that stirs people so powerfully, transcending language and nationality? This program is a quiet document of the artists and their daily rituals. It seeks to answer key questions, such as what is art and what it is to live.

An "independent watchmaker" is a watch craftsperson creating works of art based on his/her own ideals without belonging to any corporation. Among these watchmakers, Masahiro Kikuno is one that has been receiving attention for his extremely unique work that highlights traditional Japanese culture. Now, Kikuno is aiming to recreate an ultimate timepiece into a wristwatch. It is based on a "temporal hour clock" made by a Japanese master craftsman in 1851, which divides the time between sunrise and sunset into six equal parts. As the length of the day varies with the season, the length of the temporal hours changes by season. The complex and exquisite automaton clock consists of more than 1,000 parts. The documentary closely follows Kikuno's amazing creative activity of translating the same system into a small wrist watch.

In Tune with Time: Watchmaker Masahiro Kikuno

The world's elite independent watchmakers are incredibly passionate about watchmaking from design to assembly, delicately bringing together hundreds of minuscule parts all by hand. The price for one such truly artistic timepiece can fetch up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Their phenomenal techniques stretching the limits of human capability are almost divine. Examples of their mastery include a watch that uses only wooden parts except for the springs, a watch without hands or a face, and a watch that shows celestial movement. This documentary series goes deep into the workshops of the world's expert independent watchmakers.

The long-awaited completion of the most iconic "unfinished" cathedral in the world is finally approaching. Construction of the Sagrada Familia in Spain, Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece, is scheduled to end in 2026. Meanwhile, the symbolic Nativity Façade was completed in December 2015. It was a Japanese sculptor, Etsuro Sotoo, who was assigned to create the six gates in the Nativity Façade's final stage. Without any blueprints or even clues left by the master architect, how did he crack the mysterious code and end up embodying the passion of Gaudi? This documentary unveils the architect's message by capturing the moment of the Façade's completion and images of Sagrada Familia never seen before in stunning 4K.

Japanese floral artist Makoto Azuma is known internationally for his bold, vibrant, and radical "ikebana" flower arrangements that juxtapose plants with extreme and unnatural environments. In the past Azuma has frozen flowers in blocks of ice, for example. Now he is embracing two new challenges: ikebana in the deep seas and ikebana in space. NHK's 4K cameras capture Azuma's passionate quest to pose questions about life through his art. They also capture the heightened beauty of flowers blooming at the far ends of the earth and beyond.

Vivid colors; wild, dream-like scenes; and plenty of polka dots. Japan's Yayoi Kusama is one of the most closely watched female artists on the planet. Her works sell for millions of dollars. The allure of her art transcends borders and she constantly stages grand touring exhibitions around the world. Kusama is 87 years old, but she continues to paint at a frenetic pace of one painting every two or three days, as part of her "My Eternal Soul" series. This program uses an 8K camera to follow Kusama through the process of producing new works, from the initial brush strokes right through to completion. With high-definition video and original music from artist/producer Towa Tei, the program portrays the moment of creation in a striking and dynamic way.

The ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai is extremely popular worldwide. At 86, he created a monumental, 3-meter-wide composition using bold brushstrokes to depict the ancient Japanese deity Susanoo slaying several gods of pestilence. The work was destroyed by fire during the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the only clue to its original form was a single monochrome photograph. In 2016, experts relied on that photo as a guide as they launched a project to recreate this enormous work in its original dimensions. They used cutting edge technology, but faced many challenges, such as determining the work's original colors. This program follows them as they complete the recreation and unveil the true intentions behind this "Lost Hokusai."
