For the American worker it comes along at a time when it’s too hot to work and too late for a vacation. For the school child, it’s one of the impossible Latin words he/she always gets mixed up with the Ascension and he/she can’t spell either one. Mary’s Assumption, however, means much more than that. We call it her crowning feast, you know, because it is the logical result of her dignity as the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God. The divinely privileged maiden made no attempt at explaining or trying to measure her dignity; she gave all the credit to God by saying simply; “From henceforth all generations shall call me blessed for He Who is mighty hath done great things to me and holy is His name.” What Mary was saying is that all credit goes to God and yet that her own participation in giving Christ His flesh was so marvelous a deed that people (all generations) to the end of time will not be able to exhaust the honor due her as His mother. Mary’s Assumption has two distinct aspects: One considers her bodily Assumption into Heaven. The other views her Coronation in Heaven with all the pomp and circumstance that only Heaven can lavish and which we poor mortals can scarcely imagine. Mary’s Assumption has a much more personal meaning for us. It is both a reminder and a rebuke. Pastor’s Corner

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Mary’s Assumption has many meanings. For the American worker it comes along at a time when it’s too hot to work and too late for a vacation. For the school child, it’s one of the impossible Latin words he/she always gets mixed up with the Ascension and he/she

can’t spell either one.

Mary’s Assumption has two distinct aspects:

One considers her bodily Assumption into Heaven.

The other views her Coronation in Heaven with all the pomp and circumstance that only Heaven can lavish and which we poor mortals can scarcely imagine.

Mary’s Assumption has a much more personal meaning for us. It is both a reminder and a rebuke.

It comes along in the middle of August each year to remind us of the age-old fundamental Catholic truth of the existence of Heaven. It is a rebuke to our society which has lost the meaning and importance of Christian modesty!

August – Month of Great Saints Part 2 of 4

Each month we celebrate the Feast Days of Saints. We learn of their great heroism, charity, love of God and love of others. Some were scholars, some were Priests, some were Religious Sisters, some were husbands and wives. Some were even children. The month of August provides us a plethora of Great Saints to celebrate. Following are a few during the middle of the month. Next weekend’s Bulletin will have more Saints with August Feast Days!

August 11th St. Clare of Assisi (1193/4 – 1253)

Patron of those Suffering with Sore Eyes

The life of St. Clare, written by Thomas of Celano, was recently recovered, after being lost since the sixteenth century. St. Clare died on this date in 1253 at the age of 61 and was canonized by Pope Alexander IV in 1255. He had visited Clare

during her last illness while he was still cardinal protector. Clare was of an aristocratic family and she had met Francis numerous times during her adolescence. She fled from her home on Palm Sunday, 1212 and went to the Portiuncula, outside Assisi, where Francis lived with his small community. He cut her hair, clothed her in a rough habit and for the time being, placed her in a Benedictine convent. Later she was joined by her sister Agnes, who was only 15 years old, and still later by her own mother and several women of illustrious families. Francis then placed them in a house adjacent to the Church of San Damiano and named Clare the superior. She was to hold the office of abbess for 40 years, 29 of which were years of sickness. That was the beginning of the cloistered Franciscan nuns known as the Poor Clares. They practiced such severe austerities that Francis and the Bishop of Assisi found it necessary to mitigate their ascetical practices somewhat. Pope Gregory IX composed the first Rule for the “Poor Ladies of San Damiano” but in 1247 Pope Innocent IV promulgated another Rule permitting the ownership of community property, which Clare did not wish to accept, so she wrote yet another Rule. When Pope Urban IV promulgated another mitigated Rule in 1263, it resulted in two different observances among the Poor Clares.

August 14th St. Maximilian Kolbe (1894 – 1941)

Patron of Prisoners and the Pro-life Movement This heroic Franciscan died at Auschwitz in Poland at the hands of the Nazis on August 14, 1941 and was canonized as a martyr by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Born in the little town of Zdunska Wola in Poland and given the name Raymond at baptism, he entered the Conventual Franciscans in 1907

and received the name of Maximilian. He studied philosophy and theology in Rome and received academic degrees; he was ordained a Priest in 1919. Because of his great devotion to the Blessed Virgin, he added the name Mary to Maximilian when he made solemn profession in 1914. He was convinced that the Church was entering upon a Marian era and he founded the Militia of the Immaculate, whose members were called Knights of the Immaculate. He constructed an entire city which he called City of the Immaculate. As a missionary in Japan he constructed a similar city near Nagasaki in 1930. When he returned to Poland in 1936 the Gestapo took over his City of the Immaculate and turned it into a concentration camp. Arrested in 1941, he was sentenced to the labor camp at Auschwitz. When, as a punishment for the escape of a prisoner, a group of nine prisoners were condemned to death, Maximilian voluntarily stepped forward and offered to take the place of a married man who had a family. He died of starvation on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption at the age of 47. His body was cremated together with the other eight corpses.

In the July 26, 2015 Bulletin, it was reported that “The three Catholic Nursing Homes in our

Diocese have been sold.”

It should have read “The three Catholic Nursing

Homes in our Diocese are in the process of being

sold.”

Sorry for the confusion!

2016 Mass Book OPENS TOMORROW - MONDAY ~ AUGUST 10, 2015

10:00 AM

Due to the size of our Parish and the number of requests for Masses, it has become necessary that we continue with a limit on Announced Masses (i.e., Masses celebrated here at St. Peter Church where you know the date and time of the Mass) requested at the time of book opening.

This limit is 10 Masses. In fairness to all Parishioners,

you may request five (5) of those 10 Masses for the

same time, e.g. Saturdays at 5:00 PM, Sundays at 9:00

AM, etc. We also offer a multiple Mass intention at the principal Mass on Sunday at 10:30 AM. The donation for an announced Mass is $15.00.

There is no limit on the number of unannounced Masses (Masses offered for our loved ones, but without a specific date or time). The donation for an unannounced Mass is $10.00.

This policy is necessitated as a result of people who might request 30 to 40 Masses at the opening of the Mass Book each year. We are fortunate to have so many Masses celebrated here each year, but 30 to 40 Masses requested per individual quickly fills the Book. Hence, by mid-Spring to early-Summer our book is almost full. Thus, if Parishioners die during mid-year to year-end, there are no announced Masses available for two years from their death and this is greatly upsetting to the surviving members of the family.

You are kindly asked to remember the Holy Souls in Purgatory with unannounced Masses or if you wish you may consider the Purgatorial Society Enrollment which offers a monthly Mass for their happy repose. You may also enroll your loved ones by name in the Purgatorial Society. The donation is $25.00 per enrollment.

We are doing all that is humanly possible to accommodate everyone. Thank you for your kind cooperation in this matter!

Please Note:

Father Michael Goyette will be hearing Confessions periodically at 7:30 PM on Saturday evenings. If you would like to be notified, in advance, when Father will be here at St. Peter Church, please email Father Goyette @ [email protected].

Readings for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – August 9, 2015

TLM – Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Reading I – 1 Kings 19:4-8 Elijah went a day's journey into the desert, until he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it. He prayed for death saying: "This is enough, O LORD! Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers." He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat. Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the LORD came back a second time, touched him, and ordered, "Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!" He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.

Responsorial Psalm - Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.

R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Glorify the LORD with me, Let us together extol his name. I sought the LORD, and he answered me And delivered me from all my fears.

R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Look to him that you may be radiant with joy. And your faces may not blush with shame. When the afflicted man called out, the LORD heard, And from all his distress he saved him.

R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him and delivers them. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him.

R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Reading II - Ephesians 4:30-5:2 Brothers and sisters: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.

Gospel - John 6:41-51

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven," and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven?'" Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
