The Alpha and the Omega – Part 10: The Death of the Messiah This is a good place to talk about the Christological heresies, because some of them denied the death of Christ. But as St. Paul said in I Corinthians 15:16-17, “ For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins.” St. Paul’s remarks take it as given that Jesus died and had been dead, otherwise, how could we talk about His having been raised?

Again, to the Greek mind of the time, it was incomprehensible to assert that, for one thing, Almighty God willfully and deliberately chose to take on human flesh and become incarnate, and then secondly that He could actually die. To assert such things was to admit a contradiction. God could no more become dead than a square could become round. A god could not be hurt or injured, or suffer any kind of affliction. If you were to attempt to hurt a god by, say, throwing a spear at him, or shooting him with an arrow, these would simply bounce off him leaving no abrasion or mark of any kind. Furthermore, it was sheer folly to suggest a god could be killed or die somehow.

Yet, there were some in the Greek-speaking world, who were raised in such a culture where gods could not be harmed or killed, who nevertheless wanted to believe in Jesus Christ. They did believe He was special. They did believe He taught many good things, and that He even had miraculous powers and strengths. So they had to come up with some ideas to explain away those parts of the Gospel that seemed impossible to them.

One such idea was that Jesus was an appearance only, that He had no real flesh and blood. This is the Christological heresy known as Docetism. Jesus’s existence was some kind of phantasm or vapor. For us in the 21st century, it might be helpful to think of a docetic Jesus as a hologram. This way, His sufferings and death were not real, but only an appearance. To the Docetists, this idea meant that all of Jesus’ promises were real and would be kept, even though He didn’t actually die, having no real flesh and blood.

There is another, modern idea called the “Swoon Theory” which says that Jesus somehow survived the scourging and crucifixion, woke up in the tomb, pushed the stone aside and walked away. When He appeared to the Mary and the 12, they each assumed that He had been resurrected from the dead, and He let their assumption stand.

It’s hard to believe this nonsense ever gained any traction. First, the perpetrators of this false story are apparently ignorant of what a crucifixion entails. The Romans tried to come up with the absolute worst way to die they could think of. They were determined to kill the convicted criminal with as much pain and suffering as possible. They knew what they were doing. Nobody, but nobody could have possibly survived a crucifixion.

Both Docetism and the Swoon Theory involve the Lord in a deception, which we cannot have. An Almighty, and All-Holy God cannot be thought of as tricking us into thinking Jesus had a body when in fact He did not, nor could Jesus let people go on believing a false assumption.

As stated in Part 8: The Incarnation, only one who is at once fully God and fully human could atone for the sins of the world because the sin debt of the world is infinite, and no finite man could ever recompense God for it. The infinite magnitude of human sin, the consequence of which is death, could only be overcome by the death of One Whose magnitude of righteousness is also infinite. To be continued . . .

Prayer offered by Archbishop Gomez, USCCB President, on March 13, 2020: Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen

Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Patricia (Pat) Boyett. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.

CASINO NIGHT

CANCELLED

It is with a sad heart that the need to cancel Casino Night, April 25, 2020 is upon us. Due to the Corona Virus and COVID-19 the world as we know it has changed temporarily. With God’s help and yours we will all get through this as a Parish/School Community. We are considering having a Live and Silent Auction on-line. More information to come. As many of you know this is one of our major fundraisers that is needed for our operating budget. School and instruction to our students continue, just in a different way. School is open, just in a different way. Teachers have been equipped with on line teaching through the internet into the student’s homes. Students who do not have computers have been checked out Chromebooks for their use. Teachers have been given the tools and programs to interface with the students all at once. They will have 4 hours of instruction a day. With all this said, please watch for our Live and Silent Auction information and participate if you can and want to contribute or to make a donation. With your prayers and support we can continue to provide the education our children and families are accustomed to in our faith based environment. The Faculty, Staff, parents and children wish us all a

healthy and safe outcome to this event.
