when asked why she started Raleigh Bike Polo in 2012, Michelle willcox’s response is simple: Because I wanted to play it.

“No league existed at the time,” she explains. “I had friends in other states that played, and I wanted to find a way to play, too.”

Raleigh’s cycling culture historically embraces the Do-It-Yourself mentality. So willcox rolled up her sleeves, made some mallets, and encouraged local cyclists to come try bike polo. “Not many companies manufactured polo mallets,” she recalls, “So we used ski poles and gas piping to build up our own mallets.”

Despite a rocky start, Raleigh Bike Polo, equal parts sports league and social community, has gained traction in Raleigh. The league has around a dozen active players at any given time, and over 200 cyclists follow their Facebook group.

After several months of searching for a solid location to play, the group finally found a home at the Tarboro Park Tennis Courts in Raleigh. Armed with DIY mallets and barrage-ready bikes, the players are serious, but willcox describes the atmosphere as grassroots and welcoming. “I really just enjoy the community that we have, and I like that anyone walking by can pick up a mallet and play with us and have fun.”

“we would have neighborhood kids come by and just want to try it out. All ages. Some of them could barely reach the pedals. we made them wear helmets, though,” willcox shares. The group also fixes up local kids’ bikes, helping build the next generation of the cycling community.

Kyle Hord, a volunteer with Oaks & Spokes who also plays with Raleigh Bike Polo, adds, “we also want to maintain a

good relationship with the city, hopefully make improvements to our courts at Tarboro, including rebuilding a rotting tennis practice wall there.”

Many members of Raleigh Bike Polo will also take part in the Oaks & Spokes Festival in May, a ten-day celebration of Raleigh’s cycling culture. During the event, they will raise money for the Vs. Cancer Foundation. As the group expands, Hord lays out plans for the cycling community’s future. “If we could ever talk the city into helping finance or build a permanent court,” he expresses, “that would be great.”

The real magic of Raleigh Bike Polo is in the culture. “I love cycling because it’s introduced me to so many rad people,” says willcox, who has traveled to Puerto Rico, Florida, and NYC for tournaments.“It’s how I’ve met the majority of my friends,” she says.

Other members express similar feelings—finding a team, a sense of belonging, and an energizing angle on local cycling. Many players compete in local tournaments, sometimes traveling or settling rivalries with Asheville’s bike polo group.

Raleigh Bike Polo has loaner bikes and mallets for anyone who wants to give it a shot. “we always need new players.”

Raleigh Bike Polo games take place at the Tarboro Tennis Courts on Thursdays at 7pm and alternate between Tarboro and

Southern Village Sundays at 2pm.

VICTOR kNIGHT III IS DEAD. LONG LIVE DARTS!

WORDS: SABRINA GALLI | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO

The epitome of “look but don’t touch,” one poison dart frog has enough venom to kill ten grown men. The species uses a tactic called aposematic coloration to ward off potential predators; they imitate ostentatious and beautiful designs - exhibiting a variety of bright, captivating colors. The graffiti artist persona, Darts, was inspired by this powerful creature. The Mr. Hyde to Victor Knight III’s Dr. Jekyll, Darts began as the embodiment of an artist’s passion for graffiti writing.

As a Raleigh native, Victor first discovered his love for graffiti when he was six or seven years old watching classic hip-hop movies. In his teens,

he started to contribute to the graffiti culture. The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reference came up during our interview when

we discussed the dual personalities of the professional artist and graffiti writer. Victor Knight III is Dr. Jekyll, the artist who does professional mural

work and fine art paintings. Mr. Hyde is the alter ego, the graffiti writer. The two “artists” are two separate lives entirely - just living in one body. One has nothing to do with the other, and Victor made that clear. Everyone has the right to interpret art as he or she sees fit - but that doesn’t mean you can interpret the artist. Victor explained that in the fine art world, paintings can be seen as commodities. They’ve hit mainstream level. To him, the graffiti art is personal. The perspective is completely different when you come from a place of love and passion. It’s why he finds time to be Mr. Hyde after Dr. Jekyll’s work day is over. The graffiti writer creates art from its raw essence, finding the beauty in its true, gritty nature. The graffiti writer is Darts.

In our conversation, we talked about the role of graffiti in Raleigh. “It’s always had that negative perspective on it, that it’s been locked in it’s own cage and pushed off to the side. It’s becoming more legitimate art form and more well-received.” Victor’s most memorable project was a warehouse wall back in 2001. He and a few others

18

were sought out to do a memorial wall a week or two after 9/11: “That was one of those moments where you’re frozen in time. when you do something like that, you tell yourself it’s much more than you think it is.”

Victor is currently working on painting a couple of new restaurants and recently finished up a project with one called “Big Boom.” In the past, he has done a paneled mural for the NC Theatre when the Green Day-inspired American Idiot musical came to the Memorial Auditorium. He also collaborated with other artists to work on the national “Dirty Americans” exhibition at the NC Museum of Art. Other projects include the dragon

wall at Five Star Restaurant, the back patio at Royal James, a sales office for Garman Homes, Gamesturz, Latin Quarters, and Camos Brothers Pizza.

Victor’s work becomes a backdrop for the public, completely changing the atmosphere of whatever establishment he’s working on. Because he does these projects after his day job, they often take weeks or months to complete. It’s a wonder that he has the time to dedicate to one persona, let alone an alter ego. Then again, these split personalities allow him to continuously develop his passion untouched. Darts is, and remains, unaffected by the work of Victor Knight III.

THE SECRET SOCIETY OF STOAk CITY

WORDS: SUE EDELBERG | PHOTOS: SPCLGST

In an old creaky warehouse skirted by trains, one man’s architectural creation has brought a Raleigh pastime back to life for many of its veterans.

As mad scientist as this sounds, there are no vials or monsters; instead there are ramps and half pipes. Oh, and plastic trees, of course.

Inside the warehouse lives a skatepark called Stoak City, a mashup between Oak City and a popular word skaters use, “stoked”. This also explains the plastic trees that represent Raleigh, interspersed among the ramps.

On a typical night, Riley, the mastermind behind this experimental space, leaves his day job and sends out a mass text to let the others know it’s grind time. when the session opens, skateboarders trickle in and de-stress from the daily grind on an assortment of Riley’s homemade ramps.

Riley, who has a degree in Architectural Design, started off building ramps and managing a skatepark in Charlotte. During this time he saw a need in Raleigh when skateparks he once frequented such as Ryan’s world and Project 58 began to close. while there were a few

skateparks left in Raleigh, he noticed that none reached out specifically to the older generation. Because of this, many were no longer actively skating. That’s when Riley decided to bring his ramp-building expertise and love of skating back to the Oak City.

“The skate culture in Raleigh needed a cool indoor place,” said Riley. “Now is a crucial time for Raleigh and I wanted to be a part of the progression that’s happening here.”

Though he didn’t have the funds to open a skatepark, he didn’t let that stop him. “I still love to skate and my friends still love to skate, so I said fuck it,” and he put all the materials for the ramps on a credit card and started working full time as an engineer and as a bartender in Raleigh to get the place going.

Since the inception of Stoak City last summer, old school Raleigh skaters have been dusting off their boards and tightening up their trucks to get back into the sport.

LIFE

26

27

28

Stoak City is an ongoing experiment. Just like skate culture, Stoak City is multi-faceted. while Riley wants to help out the skate scene in Raleigh, it’s just as much an outlet for him to get his build on. “I’ve always wanted to create my own place as a headquarters to build skate ramps,” said Riley. “Now it’s become a pretty cool place to skate too.”

Stoak City is also a place where older skaters can feel at home to relax and hang out, and reconnect with their unique community. “Stoak City has allowed me to keep up with people that I wouldn’t otherwise get to see,” said one participant. Due to logistics, Riley keeps Stoak City somewhat of a secret. Everyone who receives session texts and knows the address has found out about Stoak City via word of mouth.

“I hate to remain vague. But if it’s anyone’s burden, it’s mine,” said Riley, referring to the dilemma of the income that could be earned if he made it public.

Though he’s not trying to be exclusive, Riley has chosen to keep the park word-of-mouth because this helps keep the park manageable and genuine. He wants it to be a place where veteran skaters feel free to shred as they please. And who can’t agree upon the value of a good secret?

when asked about the future of the skate park and the possibility of making it public, Riley says it’s unknown at this point. However, he is considering having a Saturday session for youth.

“I like keeping it mysterious. That’s what skating has become these days,” said Riley, who wants to keep the sport and the park special. “And you always want what you can’t have.”

To learn more or to just see some cool tricks, follow Stoak City on Instagram @stoakcity or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/

THE SLIGHTLY ASkEW DESIGN OF CRITTY ROSARIO

WORDS: RICHARD LIVINGSTON | PHOTOS: JOE BRUNO

I’m watching myself drink in fisheye, my image reflected back from the silvery upper thigh of a sexy mannequin from the future. Odd thing is, it’s not the most interesting artifact in the room. Every wall is adorned with a different, bold wallpaper pattern. Perched at half mast, a raised glass and steel garage door allows a breeze to waft past Christine Rosario, seated on one of several deep, colorful chairs at the Clockwork bar on west North Street in Raleigh.

Christine – Critty to her friends (and not befriending her is a herculean effort) – is the slightly askew and vastly creative mind behind the interior design at Clockwork. One does not so much enter the space she designed as become absorbed by it. Think willy wonka’s chocolate factory meets the Penrose stairs meets your weird aunt’s rumpus room.

Flashback to SPARKcon 2007. Rosario, even then, was no stranger to the outrageous. A featured designer at the fashionSPARK fashion show, she opted to sidestep the conventional runway fare.

Rather than drape another leggy model in fetching style, she recruited seven dogs, took their precise measurements and crafted pooch couture. Supported by a makeup and hair (fur) team, terriers and Pomeranians took the stage outfitted in satin dresses, elaborate lace trains and mink boots upon their paws. Critty’s gamble paid off, “I had models approach me after the show. If you can do that for a dog, what can you do for me?”

That’s the sensibility entrepreneur Souheil Alawar wanted when he sought out Rosario in 2011 with the kernel of an idea for a new space. He needed her help creating a unique interior design for Clockwork. “My background is in design and architecture.” Alawar recalls, “In my mind, I knew what Clockwork was going to be, but I needed a collaborator – someone who could articulate that complexity.”

The project swallowed up her next year – haunting thrift shops, mixing custom paints for the restrooms, testing different wallpapers, finding vintage furniture,

ART

31

32

33

painting the omnipresent stripes at the rear of the bar. “I saw the concept early,” Critty explains. “I wanted messy-tacky. Souheil had an open mind for how crazy this could become. In fact, we got halfway through and decided it wasn’t crazy enough. I said, ‘who cares? Let’s be ridiculous.’”

In the ridiculous, Souheil and Critty found a patchwork logic all their own. One of the love seats near the entrance is a repurposed headboard from a queen-sized bed. The hall to the restrooms is a jarring tunnel of black and white stripes. Souheil, a trained architect, adjusted the structure to fit the design, altering ceiling height when necessary. Everything you

see in Clockwork is local. The outcome is one of the most wonderfully oddball places to knock back some hooch and grab a bite in Raleigh.

Critty twists in her chair, pointing out details in the room. “Everywhere you look, I want you to see something beautiful, like the place was a glamorous lady. Perhaps a little faded, but still fabulous. The environment should be part of the experience. This space is good for awkward silences.”

I nod, take a sip from my drink and survey the rich surfaces surrounding us, enjoying the awkward silence.

100 DJS X 10 NIGHTSMOSAIC SPRING MUSIC FEST

WORDS: ANFERNEE AFTERWIT | PHOTO: DR. BRUNO

we owe a lot to the DJs of the world. If it weren’t for the DJs how would we move? why would we groove? we would have no good reason to wave our hands like we just don’t care and not a single, solitary roof would be raised. Not one.

Mosaic appreciates the cultural importance and the inexorable influence that the modern DJ possesses. During the month of May there will be ten days and ten nights dedicated to the amazing music of international and regional DJs who will be performing the most eclectic collection of music your eardrums have ever had the pleasure of partying with. Ladies and Germs, I present to you, the Mosaic Spring Music Festival.

Starting on May 8th and carrying through the 17th, Mosaic will be hosting the 7th annual Spring Music Fest

representing a vast collage of genres including House, Trance, Hip Hop, Latin, Drum & Bass, Reggae, EDM and Polka. Ok, were joking about the Polka but you get the idea. It’s going to be awesome!

Previous festivals have featured the likes of Kenny Dope, Mark Farina, Uproot Andy, Rob Swift, Boddhi Satva, Nickodemus, Justin Martin, Terry Hunter and Halo while this year is shaping up to be the best yet. with headliners like Cosmo Baker, Young Guru, Jubilee, SPCLGST, Keith Evan and DeeJay Theory it will be impossible not have your whole entire mind blown.

Mark your calendars, bookmark your browsers and pull up your trousers. You’ll want to tell your grandchildren about the time this much talent decended on Oak City.
