POSTLUDE: Chant de paix Jean Langlais (1907-1991) (Song of peace)

Jean Langlais was also the composer of our final hymn this morning!

One of the leading 20th century composers of French organ music Langlais was a successor of Franck and Tournemire as Titulaire at Ste. Clothilde, a small but very important church for music in Paris. His Chant de Paix, written in occupied Paris, was dedicated to someone Langlais described as “a peaceful soul . . so calm in the face of life."

the power of the enemy: grant us so to die daily to sin that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray for the Faithful Departed We remember before God: Margaret Osmond, Mary Diane Gibson, John Giggins, Margaret Ilona Minchin (HAA), Prudence Julia, Lanigan, Sheila Elin Joyce (Joyce) Wikkramatileke, Shirley Elizabeth Edwards, Patricia Corless, Elizabeth Weeks, whose anniversaries occur this week.

From our Locum Vicar

In today’s Gospel we see Jesus embarking on training the disciples in missionary duties. He gives them some very basic guidelines and principles for their work. Don’t take baggage, keep the message simple, and if you are rejected - it’s not you - it’s the message, so shake the dust off your feet and move on.

I remember a cartoon on the student’s notice board at our Theological College - Jesus has asked the question ‘Who do you say that I am?’ and Peter replies “you are the ortological, existential, ground of our being, the mystery and majesty of the divine in human form” - in the next panel Jesus says ‘What!’

We can make life more complex than it need be and I’m sure the Colleges are well aware of the need to educate our would be missionaries and clergy with the very best and latest theological insights - but knowing that we also need Christian leaders who can relate to ordinary people and are themselves well grounded.

So the second part of the gospel is about the return of the missionaries, they are excited and full of joy. Jesus

too shares their success - I saw Satan’s fall - he says.

The disciples had lived by Jesus’ simple instructions and had reaped the reward for doing so. This will always be how it is for missionaries in any situation. But the missionary is not only one who travels to foreign lands, but also one who is on the workshop floor, in the classroom, the office, the shops, in the home, the university… in fact wherever the Kingdom needs to be proclaimed.

I am currently reading Greg Sheridan’s new book ‘God is good for you’ - I love his analysis of the world and the Church. I’m sure the would urge us all at this time to be brave in the face of rampant atheism and agnosticism - to be ourselves and proclaim Christ. St. Francis of Assisi encouraged his brothers - go out into all the world and preach the good news… and use words if you must. Let’s at the very least live the gospel and make sure our words match our actions.

There will be much joy in heaven.

Every Blessing,

Ray

Reader Hear the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God

Psalm 30 APBA, page 249, 10am TiS 18 This hymn of praise is a communal thanksgiving for all that God does for Israel, and invites the Gentile world to join in.

A reading from the letter of Paul to the Galatians Paul completes his letter with a summary of his key points. It speaks reads of grace from start to finish. Grace of the Lord Jesus, grace that reaches out and embraces the world, the sign of which is the presence and joy of the spirit. It is a message not only for the Galatians but for us. Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand!

It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised—only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule— peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From now on, let no one make trouble for me; for I carry the marks of Jesus branded on my body. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen. Gal 6.7-18 Reader May your word live in us, ALL And bear much fruit to your glory.

Gospel Acclamation ALL Alleluia! Alleluia!

Anyone who welcomes me, says the Lord, welcomes the one who sent me.

ALL Alleluia! Reader The Lord be with you ALL And also with you
