Parish Newsletter 2nd/3rd SEPTEMBER 2017 TWENTY– SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME "What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?" Profit and gain. Most of us would be happy to experience these things. In our capitalist economy, profit is the point. Gain is the goal. Thought of in terms of money or possessions, having plenty of them often offers us a sense of security and sometimes a kind of pleasure. But today Jesus warns us about putting too much stock in this kind of world- ly security. It's important to recognize that Jesus isn't condemning money or possessions in and of themselves. But he is advocating a radical rethinking of our priorities. In a way, he turns eve- rything upside down. Instead of giving us tips to "gain the whole world," Jesus instructs us to take up our cross and follow him, and to lose our life for his sake. This is not a message about gain but about loss. At least, that's how it appears on the surface. When we take up our cross--embracing the sacri- fices that come with our vocation, or accepting the sufferings that inevitably cross our path--it may not gain us immediate relief, but it will unite us to Christ who suffered for us on the cross. When we lose our life for his sake--giving of our time, our talents, and our treasure for the sake of those we love or those in need--it may not fill our pocketbooks, but it will fill our hearts. Jesus wants our lives to be full. Full of love, full of peace, full of joy. Today he reminds us to be sure we aren't so full of other "stuff" that we have no room left for what truly satisfies. Jesus promises that in losing our life for his sake, we will find it in the end. May we have the confidence to put our trust in this promise. BLESSING FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR: We have a blessing of school bags on Sunday 10th September at the 10.30am Mass in Kilcoole or 12.15pm Mass in Greystones. All our boys and girls are invited, especially those beginning for the 1st time, to bring their school bag with them to Mass for a special blessing for the coming school year. All are welcome. TWENTY– SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?" Profit and gain. Most of us would be happy to experience these things. In our capitalist economy, profit is the point. Gain is the goal. Thought of in terms of money or possessions, having plenty of them often offers us a sense of security and sometimes a kind of pleasure. But today Jesus warns us about putting too much stock in this kind of world-ly security.

It's important to recognize that Jesus isn't condemning money or possessions in and of themselves. But he is advocating a radical rethinking of our priorities. In a way, he turns eve-rything upside down. Instead of giving us tips to "gain the whole world," Jesus instructs us to take up our cross and follow him, and to lose our life for his sake.

This is not a message about gain but about loss. At least, that's how it appears on the surface. When we take up our cross--embracing the sacri-fices that come with our vocation, or accepting the sufferings that inevitably cross our path--it may not gain us immediate relief, but it will unite us to Christ who suffered for us on the cross.

BBLESSING FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR: We have a blessing of school bags on Sunday

10th September at the 10.30am Mass in Kilcoole or 12.15pm Mass in Greystones. All our boys and girls are invited, especially those beginning for the

REGISTRATION FOR PREPARATION FOR FIRST COMMUNION OR CONFIRMATION IN 2018: Participation in the Sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation require preparation on behalf of the person and their families. We provide, through the parish, a programme of preparation for the families in conjunction with the preparation that takes place in the school. Registration for the preparation programme for these Sacraments in 2018 is now open on our website and closes on the 30th of September 2017. If you have a child entering either 2nd or 6th class in school this September then please register for the preparation programme during this coming week LUISNE: FR DIARMUID O'MURCHU will present a very interesting afternoon (2:00 – 5:00pm) as part of a series of 5 on the theme Searching for a Meaningful Faith in Today's Society. This first workshop will be on Our Rapidly Changing Religious Environment and will be followed by an optional Eucharist. The cost of the afternoon is €20 (or €80 if attending all 5 – see website for details). Fr Diarmuid always gives much food for thought, often challenges our way of thinking and never disappoints! Please book as soon as possible (Mob 0860517575 or email [email protected]). Venue: Kilcoole Community Centre.

ECUMENICAL ALPHA COURSE: We are run-ning a joint course with the Church of Ireland in New-castle. The course will be hosted by Fr. John Daly and the Rev. William Bennett. This is an exciting venture between the two parishes. The Alpha Course is a practical introduction to the Christian faith and is open to any-one. It runs as a series of weekly meetings which each involve an informal meal, a talk and small group discussion. There are fifteen talks covering the basic principles of the Christian faith given over a ten-week period, including a weekend or day away. It is relaxed, non-threatening, low key, friendly and fun. Alpha is for everyone, especially those wanting to investigate Christianity, new Christians, newcomers to the church and those wanting to brush up on the basics. It begins on Wednesday September 20th at 8pm in Church of Ireland Parish Centre in Newcastle. ALL WELCOME.

SOCIAL, HOBBY & CRAFT AFTERNOON – Returning this weekend Sept. 3rd , from 3pm-530pm

FALLING FRUIT IRELAND - FOOD SHARING PROJECT Falling fruit.ie is a project to harvest the seasonal glut of local fruit (apples, pears, plums, nuts, etc.) in Dublin and to direct it to charities that cater for those in need. Each year hundreds of fruit trees go

unpicked. 'Falling Fruit' organises a team of volunteers to pick the fruit and distribute it to local charities or other good causes. In 2017, we also aim to collect surplus vegetables from the grower's fields – gleaning for charities! This initiative acts as a helpful service to households who have fruit going to waste in their gardens. It also serves the community by directing the surplus fruit to local charities, where possible. Contact [email protected] or Tel. 086 2134897 if you wish to offer fruit or volunteer.
