PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODELS

You certainly do have your pick of adorable kittens to

choose from! Hi, my name is Autumn and I’m the

Calico kitten you saw on the cover. I’m pictured at

top with my black and white brother, Theo. We are 7-weeks-old and can be

adopted together or separately. Below us, in

descending order, are our other kitten friends. They are: Dexter (a black and white boy, 8-weeks-old), Nova (a pure-white girl, 8-weeks-old) and Enzo and Eska (two lilac point

Siamese, a boy and a girl, 7-weeks-old). We are all playful, affectionate and

love to be held and kissed. If you’d like to adopt one or more of us, call Cat Tails

Adoption Agency at 910-253-1375 or email

[email protected]. We’d like to thank our friends for

bringing us to the photo shoot and Dick Parrott for

capturing our precious personalities with his

camera. We had a great time playing with this ball of yarn and will be balls of

fun at your house, too!

Hi! I’m Pepper! I am a Blue Heeler, an Austra-

lian Cattle Dog, who lives in Wilmington. I

am very loyal. In fact, I follow my Dad around all day while he works

at our house. I’m a male, about 3-years-old, but I don’t know

my exact birthday. My family adopted me from the Pender County Ani-

mal Shelter about a year ago. I am already

neutered and vacci-nated. My best friend is a Terrier mix named

Ivory and she and I play a lot. I also like to go

for rides in the car. Do you have a car? I don’t really care to swim though, and it worries me when you swim, too! Swimming pools and the beach make me nervous, but I don’t mind a bath much. I especially love the attention I get after the bath and I like

being brushed! Blue Heelers are known to be very smart. I am well-trained and I know how to come, sit, stay and give you my paw. I do have a tendency to herd smaller dogs and kids. I am looking for a home with adults who

are familiar with my breed and will love me as much as my current family does. Please call Debbie at 910-539-2920

to discuss my goofy but sweet personality.

URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT

OF TIME! I was featured last

month and am still wait-ing for a family. I’m a

beautiful boy with lots of love to give. Why hasn’t someone come for me? My name is Midnight

(CM2579) and I’ve been at the shelter since

June. I watch the visi-tors as they come and

go but, for some reason, no one seems to notice me. It’s quite a mystery

as I have soft brown eyes, glossy ebony fur

and a friendly, loveable personality. I’m a young Black Lab mix, probably 2 to 3 years of age, and I was found as a

stray in Pender County. I’m a very affectionate boy who is happy to make friends with everyone and I have a playful

attitude toward life. I would love to become part of a loving family, play in the fenced-in yard, and cuddle on the couch or carpet. Could you make my dream come true? Please

call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Offi-cer Clewis at 910-279-3196. You’ll find me here, waiting to

hear your voice outside my kennel door.

I am sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira, Nikki and Charly. Thank you!

Justice Needs A Loving Family! Please Consider Adopting Her.

Full of

good spirit, compassion, and strength,

Justice is a furry friend who will surely warm

your heart. Her caretaker suc-

cumbed to can-cer, and for the past five years,

Justice never left his side. Justice is bounding with life, but after she was

rescued, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. As best the doctors can tell, the cancer has not spread, and the major mastectomy has been performed. She is spayed,

vaccinated and on heartworm preventative. Recently, Jus-tice has been around many new people, dogs, and cats,

and through it all, she has adjusted very well. She is house-trained, and she does not chew or jump onto

furniture. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please consider adopting this beautiful, gentle dog.

For more information, call 310-766-6011.

I lost my right eye to an injury when I was a baby, but don’t worry, it doesn’t bother me at

all. I play, skip, hop and melt hearts just like any other kitten!

My name is Misty and I’m a 5 pound Russian Blue girl who is about 12 to 14-weeks-old. I was in a foster home for a while, and they said I love to lay in laps and watch TV

with my human friends. I also love to play! I get along great

with dogs and other cats and am already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-

trained. Please don’t miss the opportunity to share your life with a wonderful girl like me. For driving directions, or more

information, call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I’ll be waiting to entertain you in the playroom!

I am sponsored by RepresentingBuyersOnly.com in

My name is Owen

and thanks for stopping to read

about me. I am a 12-year-old Sheltie

boy, very laid back

and don't demand much. I am more than content to lay at your feet. I came into rescue as a stray and a little ema-ciated but "good groceries" work wonders! I am a quieter

dog, but will let you know when it's mealtime or when I first greet you in the morning. I am a bigger Sheltie boy who came to Sheltie Rescue via Collie Rescue because

everyone thought I was a Lassie dog. I am house-trained and I just recently found out that I have bladder cancer.

I’m crate-trained, I’m leash-trained and I like going for car rides. To make me a member of your family, please call

Triangle Sheltie Rescue at 919-306-5148 or 910-558-6963. You may also visit our website at

www.triangleshelties.com.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Dingo. Thank you!

Hello there, I’m Dixie! I’m a young girl, about 2-years of age, and I’m a complete sweetheart. There’s not a

mean bone in my body. I’m 100% house-trained and will sit and stay on command. In fact, you can see from my photo

that I am sitting very patiently, waiting for a

tennis ball to be thrown. I bet we could have a lot of fun in your backyard!I’m a Terrier mix who is great with children and other

dogs (but no cats, please.) I’m also spayed, vaccinated, and on monthly heartworm

prevention. I’ve been waiting at SOAR for a forever family to come along for what seems like...well, forever! Won’t

you please come visit and see why the shelter volunteers love me so much? For driving directions, or more

information, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. I’ll keep my tennis ball handy!

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their

wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

►Fun Fletcher! I'm probably the best dog that anyone can ever

find. I'm very calm, love to chew my toys (and only my toys), and I

never bark (except when the vacuum cleaner is running). I am

very gentle while taking treats out of your hand and I am great with small children. I am also

very friendly with other dogs and I absolutely LOVE to meet new people. Most importantly, I am house-trained. I enjoy long walks outside. A fence won't keep me from getting out of the yard. I easily figured out

how to climb over a six foot wooden privacy fence - I'm SO SMART! As much as I am very energetic outside, I am

really calm and easy-going inside the house. They some-times forgot that I was in the house while I was busy chew-ing my rawhide bone for hours. Resting under the sun is

also something I enjoy doing very much.

◄My name is Jordan and I am a Bel-gian Malinois Mix. Look at what a cute little girl I am! Don't be fooled! I need someone familiar with my breed. I am SUPER SMART! I already know how to “sit” and will work for treats. I am a working dog who needs someone to

make me work. My breed is trained for police duty because we are naturally protective, loyal and smart. I am al-

ready crate-trained (at 12-weeks old), already spayed with 2 sets of my shots so far. I was found

running loose and no one claimed me. I would be best suited in a home without kids and other pets.

◄My name is Bo and I was dumped at Skip's Tire on Highway 17 in Brunswick County. They saw a lady

chuck me out of her car and drive off. Unfortunately, no

one got any info on her - they were too shocked. They

gave me to Brunswick Ani-mal Hospital who turned me over to Adopt-An-ANGEL. I am neutered, vaccinated and recovering from a skin infec-tion, too. I have been treated

for heartworms and am ready for my new home! I

am a really, really nice and grateful dog who deserves WAY better than the hand I have been dealt so far. By the

way, it's not cool to dump dogs on busy highways.

►My name is Tiger and I had been at Pender County Animal Control

for several months when the shelter ran out of room and I ran out of

time. When Adopt-An-ANGEL had no more room in their program, Amy San out of California spon-sored my boarding fees so that

Adopt-An-ANGEL could take me in. I love that lady! Thank You! I am an energetic guy who is full of life and starving for attention. It is so sad that I had to spend this long

being homeless. Won't you please come meet me at Petco and give

me a chance? I am neutered, up to date on my shots, and heartworm negative. I am a

Catahoula mix and look how beautiful my markings are!

◄My name is Bernie and I am super sweet and happy. I was found walking down the street

incredibly emaciated when some-one took me in and helped fatten me up. I had an old injury where I

had been hit by a car. The vet says it is not hurting me at all. It does make me limp, but I can get around fine. I am neutered, vacci-nated and heartworm negative. I

am house-trained, and get along with cats, dogs and kids, too. Will you please adopt a dog with special needs?

Adopt-An-ANGEL would like to thank Alex Gullett and her parents, Kevin and Leigh Anne, for collecting food and supplies instead of

presents in honor of Alex's 2nd birthday.

►My name is Socrates and I’m homeless be-

cause my owner moved into an apartment that

wouldn't allow me. I’m a 2-year-old neutered boy who is litter-trained and good with kids. I’m very

friendly, love being rubbed and I’ll even

stand on my hind legs so that I can push my

head into your hand for some loving. I love to

cuddle and hug and will even hug you back.

Why pass up everything you could ever want in a feline friend? Please contact the shelter now! I’m waiting and I

really need you.

Check out our BRAND new website at www.adoptanangel.net!

URGENT, URGENT! MY TIME IS RUNNING OUT! It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been living at Animal Control since June! Just take a look at my friendly face - I was born to be

someone’s com-panion, not have my days end in a shelter! My name is Bell (CF2623) and I’m a young Border Collie mix

girl who was found as a stray in Rocky

Point. I’m so sweet and friendly and have nothing

but kisses and hugs to give all the

people I meet. When I had my photo taken, I was so ex-cited to be given attention and was a very good girl. I sat and smiled for the camera. I hope my efforts will pay off

and someone will come visit me very soon. I walk well on a leash, so how about taking me for a walk? You just might find that I’m the girl you’ve been waiting for. Please call

Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Time is running out and I need

a hero.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

◄I’d like to greet you with this smile every morning!

My name is Majesta (A032533) and I’m an

8-year-old girl who is very soft and cuddly, just like a

teddy bear. I’m at the shelter because my family moved away. They told the shelter

workers that I know tricks and am good with

children and other dogs. One thing is for sure: I am a happy, friendly girl with a heart of gold. I

love to give and receive hugs and am the kind of dog people yearn for. Don’t miss the chance to adopt me!

►They call me Bill (A030671)

but I’ll answer to any name you

give me as long as you’ll take me

home! I’m a darling young

boy, just 1-year-old, who was

found as a stray. I have the most

affectionate personality and am eager to make friends with everyone who approaches my cat cage. I’ll rub my cheek along

your fingers and purr gratefully when you stroke my face. I should be living at home with a loving family! Would you

please come meet me? You’ll be so glad you did.

◄If a declawed, affectionate kitty is what you’ve been looking for, I hope

you’ll hop in the car and come meet me! My name is Marlee (A031476) and I’m a 2-year-old boy who is already neutered and vaccinated. I used to be part of a family but they moved to a place where I couldn’t go. Sounds like a sad

place to me. I am a very friendly boy who loves getting face and

neck rubs. I purr with happiness when someone comes to see me and I’m so sad when they go. Adopt me!

◄Scruffy Dog Alert! My name is Jacques (A031309) and I’m a smart, sweet boy. Everyone wonders what I’m mixed with. It could be a large Schnauzer or some sort of Terrier. I’m incredibly cute, that’s for sure! I was found as a stray but I know how to sit, shake and lay down on command. I’m also neutered, vaccinated and just 2-years-old. I’m eager to please and eager to be loved! Come visit me soon.

◄I hope my innocent brown eyes are melting your heart! I could use a little sympathy for my situation. I’m Hubert (A031418) and I was once part of a family, but not anymore. My owner said he couldn’t keep me any longer. At 9-months-old, I’m a Lab/Walker Hound mix with gorgeous choco-late-colored fur. I’m loving, friendly and enjoy catching treats. Let’s get together really soon, please?

►My story starts out a bit sad, but I’m hoping you’ll provide it with a

happy ending! My name is Trixie (A020747) and I was at Animal Control

when I was just a puppy. Someone adopted me and I’ve been living a very happy life until

now, when I was brought back to this same place. You see, they are mov-ing away and say that I cannot go. I just don’t

understand as they told the folks here all my good qualities: I’m

house-trained, great with children and know how to sit and lay down on command. At just 10-months-old, I’m a spayed, vaccinated Lab girl who loves to be cuddled.

When you sit down, I’ll sit next to you and gaze at you with my brown eyes. I’ll be a great family dog for some lucky

family. Come take me in the playroom and you’ll see!

Hi, my name is Chester, and I am 10-years-old. My story is such a sad one, I do hope you will take a minute

and read about me for you might know someone who will help me. I

was five when my first family gave me away. I was always outside in a small pen, and there was never anyone to pet or play with me. Then I found a wonderful family who let me in the house, took me to the beach and

played with me all the time. I was so happy! I don’t know why, but they

gave me away too. Now that I’m 10, they tell me not many people want an

old dog. I don’t think I’m old, I will still chase a ball and run with you and we never grow too old for belly rubs and soft words of kindness. And remember, I’m already house-trained, neutered,

vaccinated and great with children. Please help me! I cry every day for my old life with a family. My repeat foster mom loves me and is very sad she can’t keep me but I can see she

already has many dogs of her own, so I understand. If you have room in your heart and home for me, please call Cape

Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001.

I am sponsored by my foster mom in memory of one of her special boys, Monty.

I am an Angel and that's my name! I am a sweet cat, with an angelic per-sonality. I am sedate, digni-

fied, and a little shy. I unfortu-nately ran out

of time at animal control, but Adopt-An-ANGEL took me in. In the

past few months I have

watched so many kittens come and go…they find homes so eas-ily! It can be discouraging for a quiet girl like myself. Hey, I’m as pretty as any kitten and much less silly! I am beautiful with my bleached white fur and a touch of black on my ears and tail. I am spayed, litterbox-

trained and have had my shots. All I need is a sunny spot to curl up in your home, and some loving

attention. To learn more about me, email [email protected] or call 910-620-3783.

▲Help! We are being downsized out of our home! Our new landlord says there are too many pets living here and we are getting kicked out. No fair, we say! We are very

neat, use our litterbox and are certainly much less trouble than the cats around here! I’m Claude, the white Hotot

mix. I weigh about 4 pounds and really love my girlfriend Maude, as you can see. She is a brown Holland Lop, also weighing 4 pounds. We have been spayed and neutered, and are used to being around children and other animals. I am more friendly than Maude, but she will hang out with you once she gets to know you, and of course, I pamper and spoil her so she loves me best. We would love to meet you and we just know you will love us once you

see how cute we are.

▲Hi! I’m Duncan, the black and white Dutch bunny. You may remember me from last year. Well, I’m back, looking once again for my forever home. Only this time, I have a

special friend with me so I won’t be lonely. Meet Hazel, the love of my life. Isn’t she cute? She is a 3 pound, gray

dwarf bunny, spayed, litterbox-trained and really friendly and sweet. Oh, and did I mention, totally devoted to me?

You can usually find us snuggled up together. She loves to groom my face and ears, and while I am the more adven-turous one, she is never far behind, always up for some

running and playing. We both like people and attention and would really love to come live at your house.

▲My name is Penny and I am looking for a new home after being abandoned in a filthy apartment. Life was horrible

then, but it is good now and will be even better with a family of my own. I don’t trust people very much but everyone

now seems so nice that I think I’m changing my mind. I am a curious little girl by nature, and like to be right in the mid-

dle of the action. They say I am quite the looker with my big blue eyes. You’ll just have to come see for yourself! I

weigh about 4 pounds, have been spayed and am perfect with my litterbox. Please come meet me.

►Hi, I’m Lucy, a very friendly big white bunny who nearly became lunch for some-one’s pet falcon. Considering that I spent my whole

life in a 2’ x 2’ cage, I have

come a long way in 3-months. I

had no idea bun-nies could do fun things like jump on boxes, run

really fast, or eat yummy food like

dandelion greens. One of my favorite things to do is when someone walks by my pen, I stand up and give them my most ador-able look so they just have to pet me, which I just love. I have to admit, I have my ornery moments, too. Like pre-tending I don’t hear when it’s time to go back in my pen or knocking the food scoop out of my foster mom’s hand just to watch the pellets fly everywhere. So if you are looking

for a spirited, fun-loving, affectionate rabbit, here I am!

We are sponsored in loving memory of a very special rabbit named Checkers.

Love Connection

Where Is She Now?

Lexi, featured in October 2009

Lexi, a former puppy mill breeder, was dumped at Pender County Animal Control in September 2009. Covered completely by matted and filthy hair, the 5 to 6-year-old toy breed was also suffering from a broken shoulder as well as dislocated joints. Taken in by foster mom Tonia Burger (holding Lexi, right), a plea was made in PawPrints for donations to prepare for a possible amputation. Reader Christine Gillis saw the story, made a contribution, then contacted Dr. Sheila Hanby, founder of Furever Friends Animal Res-cue. As a Furever Friends volunteer, Christine hoped that other options for Lexi’s leg might be found. Dr. Hanby agreed to take a look and transportation was arranged. Here, Christine describes her first meeting with Lexi:

“She was driven from Hampstead to Leland for Dr. Hanby to look at her in the morning. When she was ready to leave in the afternoon, I arranged to meet her transport halfway in Wilmington. The moment I saw this small, five pound creature with the huge ears, it was love at first sight.

When I put her on my lap in the car for the ride to Wil-mington, she clung to me so tightly and then proceeded to climb gingerly up on my chest, stared into my eyes with her own beautiful, soft, deep brown eyes and kissed my chin. At that moment, I knew I had to have her, no matter

what. When I met her transport, I said that I wanted to adopt her. Jane Hampton, the lady I met, said I would have to fill out an application, pending approval, but that she approved me on the spot. It was meant to be for Lexi and me.”

Dr. Hanby referred Lexi to Eastern Carolina Vet-erinary Referral Animal Hospital and Dr. Ned Williams. After a shoul-

der repair, followed by a complete shoulder replacement, a knee repair, two hip repairs and hours of physical therapy, Lexi was a brand new dog. Here, Christine continues the rest of Lexi’s story:

“It was all a huge success. Miss Lexi now walks with a spring and loves to run with her two companions, Toby and Sophie. Recently she ran across two empty lots to chase a dog and abruptly stopped when she reached the water. That would not have been possible a year ago. She has come so far. Lexi’s personality, for all the neglect she received in the puppy mill, is one of a loveable, sweet, affectionate and outgoing little dog. She is so happy and enthusiastic when she sees anyone. In bed, she sleeps next to me like my second skin. When she is picked up, she will just stare into your eyes and is so generous with dainty kisses. She even looks like she is smiling at the same time. One sweet memory I have of Lexi is with my late mom. She often wanted Mom to pick her up and put her in her lap. Mom was unable to do this because of severe Rheu-matoid Arthritis. Lexi could not understand this and con-tinued her soft, pleading bark to be picked up. I would lift her into Mom’s lap and she would sit with Mom for a long time, kissing and licking her hands as if she knew there was a problem. Lexi has taught us how affectionate and loveable a dog can be after what she went through in her past life as a puppy mill survivor. She is such a courageous and brave little girl who trusted everyone involved in her care as if she knew she was being helped. She was cruelly dumped at the shelter like a sack of garbage after her reproducing time for profit was over. She is the true epitome of a re-birth and has blossomed into a princess. One could not ask for a more loveable and loyal companion.”

“She is such a courageous and brave little girl,” says Christine Gillis, pictured at home with Lexi in September.

Pictured at top in her neglected state, Lexi is utterly transformed, below, after her first grooming.

CAT: Cat Adoption Team

◄I’m a very sweet boy who just loves to be held and kissed. I also get along great with dogs, cats and kids. So why don’t I belong to a family? My name is Midnight and I’m a black boy with a sprinkling of white here and there. At just 5-months of age, I’m already neutered, vaccinated and excellent in the litterbox. My owner had to give me up due to financial hardship. Can I start anew with you?

Volunteers Needed Desperately!

To help, please email or call:

[email protected] or 910-792-9014 and leave a message.

◄I’m a little boy who often gets mistaken for

a girl because I’m simply gorgeous! I have medium-length, silver fur

with Tabby markings. My name is Cory and I was born in April of this year and was found by Cat Adoption Team at a

shelter where I was running out of time. My

brothers and sisters were with me, too, but

they’ve all been adopted! I’m a complete

sweetheart with a friendly, affectionate

personality. I’m good with children and other cats and am already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Adopt me!

◄Hi! I’m Snickers and I’m an 8-month-old female Patch Tabby with a big purr to go along with my big heart. I just adore being with all people and am very happy to be held and caressed. I used to live in a home with several dogs and several kids and we got along very well. I guess you could say I’m used to living with a big crowd. I’m active, playful and am up to date on shots, spayed and litterbox-trained. Let’s go!

►Have you ever met a cat who listens to the radio?

Now you have! My name is Amanda and I just

adore the sounds that come out of this amazing

invention. My foster mom plays all kinds of tunes for me. I’m a very sweet and

playful girl, just 1-year-old. I was found at Carolina

Beach, quite near to the sand. Maybe I was

listening to the music of the seashells. We could have a harmonious life!

►Look how

adorable we are!

Just think, you could be playing with us in

your home very soon.

All you have to do

is adopt us, together or separately! We are two very sweet sisters, Jerri-Lynn and Jenni-Lynn, and we have been waiting for

loving homes for quite a while. We’re so playful, friendly and affectionate - it’s quite a mystery why we haven’t been

snatched up! At 7-months-old, we get along well with children, dogs and other cats. We’re also spayed, up to

date on shots and litterbox-trained. Meet us, we’re great!

◄Hi there, everyone! My name is Buddy and I have a playful, positive approach to life. Having just one eye doesn’t bother me a bit! I play, skip, run and hop just like every other kitten. I’m a young boy who is already vaccinated, neutered and litterbox-trained. I would love to be part of a family that keeps me indoors, safe out of harm’s way. I get along well with other cats and sure do like to be held by humans. Let’s meet today!

Cat Tails

◄For all you race

car fans, I am the cat for

you. My name is

Full Throttle and as

you might guess, I am “wide

open”. I am an 8-month-old male who is definitely in the teenager stage. One of my favorite past-times is to perch

on your shoulder and to go for a ride. So if you want me to watch Dale Earnhardt, Jr. with you, well, I would be happy

to. Cars going real fast is entertaining to watch!

►My name, Lady Gaga, implies that I must be outlandish and well -

take a look! I am the most un-

usual Calico you have

ever seen. My face is

orange sur-rounded by black and white. I am about 18-months-old

and finally rid of all those babies. You see, not only did I take care of my own, but I took care of seven others who

lost their mom. Whew, what a job.

►No scratchin’ post needed! Yup, I am front declawed. My

name is Chester and I am the most

beautiful big orange Tabby you’ve ever

seen! I had a home for the last year, until my owner got mar-ried. In came the

dog, and well, out I went! Can you imagine, taking a dog over a great cat like me? I don’t need to go for a walk and I never smell! And I don’t need my nails trimmed. So please take me home and

let me sleep on your desk.

◄My name is Clarise

and with my hypnotic

green eyes you might

think I could “silence a lamb” but really I am quite a shy and quiet girl who

gets along well with kids and cats - if you give me the time to get used to a new environment. I am a little more ma-

ture at 4-years-old, but have plenty of time to love you like you need. Please stop overlooking me because I am not a

kitten, I still need that special home where I can get and give the love I need.

▲Someone decided my name wasn’t manly enough so they changed it to Duke, yup, just like John Wayne. You

see his real name was Marion Morrison, and my real name was Marion. So I guess if a name change was good

enough for him, heck it is good enough for me. You see he was a manly man, and I am, too. I do have a soft side,

though. I love to sit on your lap and purr for hours, but watch out ’cause when it is time to play I am all about it.

You’ll get tired just watching me.

▲That’s Spanky and I’m Petey. We’re the last of the little rascals and we are ready to go home! We are 6-month-old

adolescent boys who love to get into trouble. We are al-ways running and jumping, just like you would expect any teenage boys to behave. But we do have our quiet times when we love to leap into a lap for a nice nap. So if you

are looking for “double trouble”, look no further!

◄My name is Oliver (A244140) and I’m a Dachshund and Feist mix. I’m a small house dog who likes to sit by your feet and be rubbed. I enjoy squeaky toys and long walks. I am annoyed by small kids so I’m looking for a home without those. I’m 2-years-old, leash-trained, very sweet and ready to be adopted right now. If you’ll give me a good back scratchin’, I’ll moan with delight.

◄My mom and dad broke up and my mom moved out. If that’s not bad enough, my

dad brought me here to the shelter. I’ve loved and I’ve

lost but I’m still very willing to love again - if only you’ll give me the chance. My name is Pender (A244436) and I’m a

Beagle and Hound mixed girl. I’m already spayed and I know how to “sit” on com-mand. I’m very smart, I’m eager to please and I am

more than happy to work for treats! I have lived with dogs

in the past so if you have one of those, it’s cool. If you don’t, that’s cool, too. To adopt a sweet and loving, loyal friend, please come out to the shel-

ter today. I could really use a friend right now.

►I’m a brown Tabby who craves human touch and feeling loved. Those are my favorite things in life.

My name is Taddy (A245305) and I’m ap-

proximately 2-years-old. I’m handsome, I like being held and I’m an all around wonderful cat. Someone

rescued me as a stray and kept me safe until I could come here to the shelter to find you. Please don’t

let me down. I’ve travelled so far to find you.

►I’m a big, sweet boy named Iggy (A245880) and I was found as a stray. Luckily for me,

Animal Control came out to pick me up and

brought me here to the shelter. I’m an adult

Great Dane who is brin-dle colored and full of

love. I know how to “sit” and “lay down” on com-mand and I take treats very gently from your

fingers. I just keep look-ing and waiting and

watching the door hoping that someone will come rescue me. I’m a family dog without a family. Could you help me out with that?

◄Hi, I’m Thalia (A244278) and I’m a silly and goofy girl who is full of personality. I was picked up as a stray and brought here to the shelter to find a home. I love playing and I enjoy batting around feathered toys. I like to rub up against my human’s legs and I enjoy the occasional head rub. The doctor has already spayed me and I’m ready to go home with you today. How about saving me?

►Gorgeous, simply gor-geous I am! My name is Caleigh (A245041) and

I’m a stunning long-haired Calico. Not only

do I have the looks but I have a wonderful purr-sonality to match! My fur is super soft and I

love to be rubbed and petted. If you would like to adopt a super friendly

and social princess, I suggest that you get out

here to the shelter ASAP. You wouldn’t want to miss out on a

gem like me!

URGENT, URGENT!

I’M RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

Please come meet me soon! I’m a small, friendly

beauty that has been overlooked. My name is Foxy (CF2733) and I’ve been living at Ani-mal Control since June of this year. The summer was

unbearably hot and I’m very ready to enjoy fall with my new family. I was

found as a stray, skipping down the road, as lost as could be. I have a smallish build (perhaps 30 pounds) and red

fur, which truly makes me look like a fox. I’m all dog, though, I promise. Unlike foxes, I love to hug and cuddle and I walk very well on a leash. At just 1 to 2-years-old, I’m a young girl with lots of memories to make with my future family. Won’t you come to the shelter and get to

know me? You’ll find a friendly, affectionate friend waiting to love you for the rest of her life. Please call Pender

County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 for directions or more information.

◄I’d be so grateful for you to take me home! My name is Serena and I’m a 2-year-old spayed female who was dropped off at a local veterinarian’s office. ◄I’ve got sitting on command down pat!

If you don’t believe me, take a look at my photo. Hi, my name is J.J. and I’m a 4-year-old Yellow

Lab mix boy with a sweet and gentle heart.

I am very happy and friendly and am making

the best of life in a shelter. I once had a home but my owner

moved away and couldn’t take me. I get

along great with all people and other dogs

and I walk well on a leash. Your best friend is waiting right here for you - all you

have to do is come on out and meet me in person.

◄Simply gorgeous! My name is Venus and I’m a 1 to 2-year-old girl who has been told quite often that I’m a beauty. I also have a lovely personality to go along with my good looks. I’m friendly, love to be rubbed and would be happy to beautify your home! I was abandoned at a local vet’s office and am hoping to find a place where I can live happily ever after. Drive on over and I’ll give you my love.

►I’ve been friendly and loving toward everyone since

the moment I walked in the shelter! And that’s exactly the

kind of dog I’d be for my new family: friendly and loving.

My name is Storm and I’m a 44 pound, 2-year-old, male

Lab mix. I’m already house-trained, so there’s no need to

worry about that, and I’m great with kids. I once lived

happily with other dogs and cats and am already

neutered and vaccinated. I’d be a perfect family addition!

◄Hello there! You’ve found me in my favorite spot - checking out the world from my perch by the window. Do you have a window seat that could use a cat like me? My name is Tenny and I’m a 1-year-old girl who is spayed, vaccinated and excellent in the litterbox. I like all people and am playful and loving. I’m even getting along with the other cats in the play area. Do yourself a favor and come meet me today, okay?

►Guardian Angels have been watching over me! Will they lead you to my

door? My name is Buffet and my story began

when I was found in an apartment complex by a very kind lady. I was weak and could barely

stand - I was starving to death and so thirsty. She got me to the vet’s office and they took great care of me! They named me Buffet after Jimmy Buffet

because I have a laid-back, mellow nature. I’m now healthy and waiting for a loving family. I’m good with children, a total Lap Cat, neutered, litterbox-trained and vaccinated. You’d be so lucky to have me as your own!

Lap-friendly and full of love! That’s me,

Lilly. I’m a 3-year-old Poodle/Dachshund

mix who weighs in at a precious 15 pounds. NC Rescue League

found me at a shelter where I was sched-

uled to be euthanized. Whew, that was a

close one! Now I’m enjoying life in my

foster home and wait-ing for the day when my new family comes along. I’m very easy-going and sweet and I get along well with my canine

foster brothers and sisters. My foster mom says I don’t have any issues - I have good house manners and enjoy taking walks outside. I sleep in my dog bed all night long and I behave like an angel while being groomed. I’m also

spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. If I sound like the friend you’ve been waiting for, please call NC Rescue League at 910-232-5253. You can also visit

their website at www.ncrl.petfinder.com.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Molly. Thank you!

I’m a Benji-lookalike, but my name is Mikey! I’m a Shih Tzu/Feist mix, approximately 1-year-old and weighing in at about 15 pounds. NC Rescue League pulled

me from a shelter where I was running out of

time. I am very sweet, but a little timid. Once I get to know you, though, look out for my kisses!!

I love treats and chicken, so you can

always butter me up that way. I tend to be afraid of men, but I will come

around with love and patience. I get along well with the other dogs in my foster home and I am house-trained, but will need reinforcement. I am also neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. If you’d like to adopt me, please call NC Rescue League at 910-232-5253. You can also visit their website at www.ncrl.petfinder.com.

◄My name is Todd and I’m a great dog! My date of birth is April 1, 2004 and I weigh 70 pounds. I’m full of love and I’m also full of fun for you and your kids or grandkids. I’m house-trained and I have good house manners. If you already have a dog, please bring him or her to Paw’s Place and let’s see if we can become friends. I’m just aching to be some special person’s best friend and companion. Don’t make me wait!

◄Hello! My name is Petey and I’m a 25 pound Jack Russell mix who has been through some sad

times. I used to have a wonderful home but

my owner became very ill and I was

brought to the shelter. I sure do hope to be part of another loving

family soon! I’m house-trained,

neutered, and friendly to all the humans

(including kids) I see! I’d prefer to be the only other dog in the household and am leash-trained. I’m 12-years-young and am active and in great health. Let’s meet! ►I might be nothin' but a

hound dog, but I sure am proud! My name is Beau and I was part of a litter of twelve puppies that was adopted out four years ago. Sadly, my owner became very ill

and could no longer keep me. The good news is

that I have perfect house manners and am very well behaved! I walk nicely on a leash, am

house-trained, can sit for a cookie, and I get along well with other dogs and human children. I am

even used to sleeping in bed with my family, if it’s allowed. Please give me a home where I can be loved and adored!

►Hi there! My name is Mama Roxy and, a few months ago, I wandered up to Paw’s Place in sad shape. My eyelids had turned inward, irritating

the eyes. My new friends got me to the

doctor and he corrected the problem with

surgery. Now I’m feeling great! I’m a 6-year-old

girl who is spayed, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. I’m extremely gentle and good with children. At 70

pounds, I have a very loving personality and I’m also house-trained. Could we share our lives together?

►My name is Sugar Pie and I’m a 3-year-old Redbone/

Bloodhound mix girl. I have floppy ears as soft as butter and I also have the most kissable mouth. In fact, I’m kissin’ people all the time because I’m extremely friendly and affectionate. I enjoy

playing and being with people. I love other

dogs, too. I really want to be part of a family. Would you let me be your new baby girl?

I’ve been at Paw’s Place for such a long time!

►I’m a small Hound - just 30 pounds - and I was

found as a stray in South Carolina. My name is Juliet and I’m a sweet,

gentle, 1-year-old girl who would love to live in a quiet

home with my very own Romeo. I play extremely well with other dogs and enjoy taking walks. I’m

looking for a person or fam-ily with a fenced-yard and a desire to share their life

with a good-natured girl like me. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. How about giving this Juliet a very happy ending?

Feline Colony Needs Land To Live On!

Do You Have A Farm or Piece of Property That They Can Make Their Home?

Imagine everything you know is suddenly gone. Your family, your friends, your home. Not even a tree remains. Imagine you have no way of understanding what has happened to you or what lies ahead. All you

know is that you are terrified, hungry, and alone.

This is the fate suffered by countless feral cats in New Hanover County.

Time Is Running Out

Do you have a farm where they could be barn cats? Or property with an enclosed shelter where they could live free of danger? Their needs are

simple...food and fresh water every day.

Their lives are at risk...could you be the one to help them?

Please call Friends of Felines at 910-452-6721.

You can also visit their website at www.friendsofelines.org

We are Annabelle and Nala and we’re a mom and daugh-ter team of “teacup” Saint Bernards. We are purebred but we weigh under 80 pounds each! And since we are best

friends, we are hoping that someone will adopt us to-gether. We were running loose in Onslow County. Luck-ily, our foster mom found us and we have been living the

good life ever since! We like to play outside but being inside with people makes us happiest of all. We are still a bit shy with new people, but we are very affectionate and playful once we learn to trust you! We love kids and other dogs and have even learned that cats do not really like to be chased! We have been treated for heartworms and

have been spayed and vaccinated. Now we just need a forever home. Maybe with you? If you are interested in adopting us, contact Cape Fear Saint Bernard Rescue

910-547-4823 or email [email protected].

We are sponsored in loving memory of Calvin and Hobbs.

We’re Declawed Darlings Who’d Love To Find A Home

Together! Just look at how we share one cat bed! We’re a brother/sister duo who will give you double the love and affection. My

name is Finn and I’m the boy standing tall in the photo. My sister, Tucker, is laying down. We are happy, healthy, friendly and loving. We both get along great with children, other cats and also dogs. I’m a sweet,

snuggly boy. I love to be out among the commotion, ob-serving everyone from my perch. I’m very puppy-like and

will faithfully follow my person from room to room. I’m very playful and I love to be carried around. They tell me I’m a cool, laid-back boy. As for my sister...well, she’s a sweet-heart! She loves to watch birds from the window and will even try to mimic their chirping. She adores paper balls and, after a few throws, will even bring the ball back to

you! She’s very loving and thrives in a home with another cat. At 6-years-old, we’re looking for a home where we

can be indoors-only. Since we have no claws, we wouldn’t be able to defend ourselves outside. That’s just fine with us, as we’re very happy being house cats and gazing out windows. If you’d like to make our dreams come true, call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014 or come visit us at

Petsmart in Wilmington. We’re there seven days a week!

We are sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

Page 25: PawPrints Magazine November 2010

Wait, how can this be? I was featured on the cover of PawPrints last month, but I never found my future family!

I got lots of compli-ments on my super-model pose, but I’m

still living alone at the shelter. If you saw me last month, and con-sidered adopting me but thought I surely must have found a

home, please call to-day!! I’d be so happy to meet you. To re-

fresh your memory, my name is Luna and I’m a 2-year-old Terrier mix who is ex-

tremely laid-back and easy-going. Not many dogs would be happy wearing a tiara, pearls and tutu, but I didn’t mind a bit!

You’ll find that I’m a darling, awesome girl who has NO is-sues. I’m already house-trained, leash-trained, spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I adore other

dogs and I love people, especially kids. I behave beautifully at adoption fairs and am instant friends with everyone who approaches, from young to old. I love giving and receiving hugs and am always happy to be by your side. Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and tell them you’d like to meet me!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in

Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Adopt us separately or together! We’ll be happy either way. My name is

Cole and I’m the adorable black and white boy you

see here. Below me is my best buddy, Scotty. He’s

an orange Tabby with spar-kling eyes. We’re 7-month-old babies on a search for loving homes. If you’ve

been praying for a precious feline to love, I’ve got a

great idea! Why not come to the shelter and spend

some time with Scotty and me? You can cuddle and kiss us, then settle back

and watch us play-wrestle and skip after our toys.

When you find the one who steals your heart, the ladies here will give you the adop-

tion paperwork to fill out. It’s just that easy! For driv-ing directions, call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. We can’t

wait to meet you!

It’s no wonder I was named for a painter

because I am so beautiful, if I may say so myself. My name is Monet, and I am a

7-year-old female mini-Schnauzer who

is the shiniest silver in color, with cropped ears and a docked

tail. I was turned in to a shelter because my Mom had can-cer, and I hated it there. I am much more suited to life as a spoiled rotten little girl. Since coming into foster care with

Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas, I have loved everyone I’ve met. I am house-trained, crate-trained, and I walk well on a leash. I like to be the center of attention, and I love to be right next to you at all times. I am spayed, up to date on

all of my shots, have had my teeth cleaned, have had bloodwork done (I'm a healthy girl), and I am microchipped.

Now all I need is for you to adopt me! Please go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org to fill out an appli-cation or call 804-986-8927 if you need one faxed or mailed

to you.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in loving memory of Mulligan.

Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet and loving girl. I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd

mix and all I want is to please and be loved. I do have an old cruciate liga-ment injury which requires me to stay on glucosamine chondroiton for my lifetime. It would be helpful if I were hand walked on a regular

basis to strengthen my muscles. I don’t really get

along with other female dogs, but I generally inter-act well with larger, docile male dogs. I have been in a shelter situation for a long

time and I’m really wanting a family of my own! Yes, I may have special needs, but I love people and would be a won-

derful companion for some lucky person or family. I’m currently staying at a dog boarding facility and the owners

say I behave beautifully. Won’t you please consider adopting me? Please call the Sunburst Foundation at

910-622-0011 or email [email protected] for more information.

I am sponsored by the Karl Miller family. Thanks!

I Need Donations and A Home After Surgery!

I am looking for a Christmas miracle. Yes, in November. My name is Kayla, and I am a 5-year-old black and silver mini-Schnauzer female who

weighs 15 pounds. I came to rescue because I am blind. But WAIT...don't stop read-ing, and please don't count me out! The specialist says

my eyes are perfect, and with surgery, I will be able to see! Schnauzer Rescue of the

Carolinas is trying to raise funds so that I can have this sur-gery and be adopted. We need to raise $2,500 within two

months. Once I have my surgery, I will be a healthy, normal dog, and will need a home. So, if you are looking to make a Christmas miracle come true, please apply to adopt me, get approved, and be waiting for me when my surgery is over. I

would love that! I am an amazing girl, and even though blind now, I am house-trained, crate-trained, great with

other dogs, and I love people. I navigate softly through the house and outside, and I am never discouraged. Being this wonderful now, can you imagine how good I will be once I

can see? I am spayed, up to date on all of my shots, heart-worm negative, and microchipped. Please apply to adopt me at www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. Or, if you cannot adopt, please make a donation to my fund on the website. A sponsor has agreed to match all donations so we can make this surgery happen. Call 910-264-8300 if

you have any questions.

Hi there, my name is Reily! Can you

believe I was found lying alongside the road late one eve-

ning all by myself? I watched cars pass

me by and won-dered why no one

was stopping to pick me up. Finally, a

couple stopped and saved my life! I was

skin and bones when they found me, but they are

getting me back in tip-top shape! I’m a girl who will fit right into many homes

as I am very calm and non-aggressive towards people and especially other dogs. I am obviously a mixed breed but since I am an adult, I will not get bigger. I am learning to play with the ball and I love to lay out in the sun in the back yard at my foster home. I am 16 pounds, which is a

bit underweight, but don’t let that fool you! I am very strong and my foster family is getting plenty of good food in me. I went to the vet’s office and am surprisingly very healthy. My shots have been updated, (oouch!), and of

course I was heartworm tested (negative-yeeeeah!!!) along with starting a heartworm and flea series. I am

currently awaiting a loving and caring home to spend the rest of my life at, and will give my loyalty and companion-ship to my new family. If you are interested in me, please

call 910-264-8300.

A trio of pup-pies! How-ever will you

choose? Actually, it’s going to be harder than

you think because

there are a total of nine

precious pups looking for families. I am Bandit, the brown boy on the far left. In the middle, with one blue eye, is Blaze. And on the far right is black and tan Teddy. We are all boys. There are only two girls in our litter and

one of them also has a blue eye like Blaze. We are just 7-weeks-old but are weaned from our mother and have been

eating soft, solid foods for a while now. Our mother is up for adoption, too! We were found at Animal Control and are so happy to be at Pender County Humane Society. We each have distinct personalities: I am the snuggler, Blaze is the

playful explorer, and Teddy is mellow and laid-back. We all love to be held and kissed. We’ve had our first round of puppy shots and invite you to come watch all nine of us

play. You’re bound to have a good time! If you’d like to fill out an adoption application, call the shelter at 910-259-7022

and they’ll be happy to help.

NOW OPEN - 9am to 4pm on Saturdays!

If you like Shih Tzu’s, you’ll like me! My name is

Dixie and I’m a 2 to 3-year-old girl. I was once a breeder dog in a puppy

mill, but that sad life is

behind me. Now I’m

looking forward to sharing a happy life with my new fam-ily! I weigh approximately 13 pounds and can be a bit

timid and shy, but I warm up quickly. I am very laid-back and am beginning to learn how to play with toys. I get

along very well with my foster brothers and sisters (they’re dogs, too) and I’m working very hard on my house manners. At the groomer’s shop, I don’t mind

having my body taken care of, but I really don’t like them to work on my face. Other than that, I’m a happy-go-

lucky girl! In my photo here, I am enjoying myself at the Salty Paws Festival, where I behaved well and met lots of new people. To adopt me, please call NC Rescue

League at 910-232-5253 or visit their website at www.ncrl.petfinder.com. Oh yes, I’m spayed, vaccinated

and on heartworm prevention, too!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

If you love Dachshunds, you’re in for a real treat! My name is Rusty and I’m the red-gold, long-haired boy on the top.

Below me is my friend, Dillon. He is a long-haired, black and tan boy. We are both 4-years-old and very new to the shelter.

Our former owner became ill and could no longer keep us. At the moment, we are quite unsure of our surroundings and are learn-ing to adjust. Our new families will need to be patient and give

us time to settle in. We’ll be worth it, we promise! We are both on heartworm prevention and vaccinated. Dillon is neu-

tered, and I will be neutered prior to my adoption. You can adopt us together or separately. And

guess what - we are not the only two Dachshunds here, there are three others who came with us. That’s a total of five! Call Pen-der County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 for more informa-

tion on adopting us.

We are sponsored by Dock Street Printing in memory of Jeecho, canine cop with the Wilmington Police

Department and Sanchez, mascot at Fire Station 51. Thank you!

◄URGENT, URGENT! My time

has run out! This is my fourth

appearance in the magazine! When will my future family get here? My name is

Jackson (CM2675) and I’m a young boy who was found as a stray.

I’m now at Animal Con-trol’s shelter, where I

endured the summer’s heat and now face the arrival of winter in my outdoor kennel. It will be so good to get in an

air-conditioned or heated house one day! I’m a friendly, playful, happy fellow with caramel-colored fur. I’m probably mixed with Lab and I

like to please the humans around me. Would you please make my dream of a family come true? Adopt me today!

►URGENT, URGENT! My time is running out!

How is it possible that a Golden Retriever mix gets

overlooked? Especially one as loveable, friendly and

cuddly as me? My name is Luke (CM2846) and, as you

can see from my photo, I love being close to people and intend to be the best

companion you could ever ask for! I was found as a stray in Hampstead in Au-gust and it’s thought I’m

quite young at just 1 to 2-years-old. They tell me I’m a very laid-back, easy-going kind of boy. Save my life so that I can share it with you!

►URGENT, URGENT! My time is running out!

I’m a Shar Pei mix named Bella (CF2655) and I’m waiting for

the chance to be your girl. I’ve been waiting a long time, since

July! I was in a foster home briefly and it was noticed that I get along just great with kitty cats! I was found as a stray

with a skin condition, but the vet has treated me and I’m doing

very well. It is not contagious to humans or other animals. You’ll love my friendly, upbeat personality, I promise, so let’s meet!

►I’m Chazz (CM2997), a 10 to 12 pound Chihuahua mix

boy who loves to give dainty, sweet kisses to everyone.

Even if I’ve just met you! And if you look at my photo,

you’ll see that I’m a great fan of being held. At just 3 to 4-

years-old, I was given to Animal Control by another shelter who had run out of

room. I sure hope my future family is reading this. We

have lots of cuddles and kisses in our future. Hurry

on over and let’s get started!

◄I’m a house-trained and friendly Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher mix who weighs in at 20 pounds or less. I’m so cute! My name is Bambi (CF2995) and I’m a 4 to 5-year-old girl who was brought to the shelter by another rescue who had run out of room. I’m extremely loving and have a tiny nubbin for a tail. I love meeting new people and am a total expert at melting hearts.

►Have you been looking for a precious kitten to adopt? Well, how about me! I’m as

precious as they come. I might even be mixed with Maine Coon as I have fluffy hair and a personality

that just won’t quit. My name is Victoria (FF2826) and I’m an 8 to 10-week-old girl who was picked up

by Animal Control on Topsail Beach. Gee, I wonder how I ended

up there? Well, that’s all in the past and I’d prefer to focus on my future with you.

I love to be held, kissed and cuddled. Come get me!

My name is Ellie and I am a

fun, playful, energetic girl who would do best in a home with a fenced in

yard. I am spayed, up to

date on my vac-cinations and

heartworm negative. I do

great with other dogs. I was

adopted as a puppy and returned by my family because they felt that they couldn't meet my needs. What I need

right now is a new family. It's very sad for me to be stuck in a cage at a boarding facility. Please don't let me be

homeless for 6-months, like some of these other guys I am looking at! HOW SAD! I would benefit from a fenced in

yard or even if you had a lonely, lazy dog who needs some exercise. If you would like to know more about me or

would like to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund, thanks!

Looking for a playful and friendly companion for yourself or your family?

You’re looking at the right dog for the job! My name is Ace and I’m a 2 to 3-year-old male

Labrador Retriever mix. Everyone who meets me falls in love, and

that’s the absolute truth! I have an affectionate

personality and a happy demeanor. I am already

house-trained and leash-trained and I’m

neutered, up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. I also get along well with other dogs. Wow, it

sounds like I’m well prepared to be a great family companion, doesn’t it? Let me prove it to you - take me home today! For driving directions or more information,

please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022.

◄Does your lap need warming?

How about laughter? Do

you have enough of that? We’re here to

provide you with all those needs and more! I’m

Brooklynne and I’m the female

Tabby kitten on the left. Next to me is my grey and white brother, Brooks.

We are just 6 to 8-weeks-old and were found as strays. To say we are adorable is an understatement. We can put a smile on your face and melt your heart at the same time!

◄Doxie lovers, rejoice! My name is Ranger and I’m a 2-year old

male Dachshund with short red hair. I’m very

cute! I came to the shelter with four other

Dachshunds. They are available for adoption as well. Our owner

became ill and could no longer keep us. We are quite bewildered by our new environment

so our new families will need to be patient and understanding as we

settle in. I am up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. Come to the shelter and introduce yourself!

►If you don’t mind me bragging, I’d like you to

notice how I’m sitting on command! My name is

Brandy and I’m very proud of my sitting skills.

I watch people intently and do my best to please

them. I’m a 16-month-old Bluetick Hound mix

who is house-trained and leash-trained. I love greeting all the folks who come to the shelter and I

get along very well with children. I would make

my new family so happy!

►Hi! My name is Casey and I’m a 2 to 3-year-old English Foxhound girl. Several months ago, I

was found running as a stray. But now I’m at the shelter and I love meet-ing all the new people who come to see us

here. I get along great with the other dogs, too! I’m already spayed, up to

date on shots and on heartworm prevention.

I’m hoping to find a very special someone who

will give me all the love and attention I deserve. If that could be you, let’s meet!

►They’ve called me Cutie Pie and it sure is easy to see why. I’m an

11-month-old grey and white Tabby

boy who was found living alone under someone’s porch. Now I’m at the shelter,

making pals with the other kitties, and waiting for my forever family to walk through the door. I love to be petted and held, but I can be a bit timid at first. Don’t worry about that, though, just start rubbing me and I’ll

quickly melt into a very purry fellow. I’m also neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Come see me!

►If you need more smiles and fun in your

life, you’re in luck! We are ready to bring you so much joy! My name is Alexis and this is my sister, Danielle.

We were born on June 15, 2010. If you’d like to see what precious darlings we really are, we invite you to come to

the shelter and cuddle us in person. It’s a cageless environment, so you can get down on the floor and be

surrounded by felines! We are spayed, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained. Adopt us together or separately!

Can you hear me purr-ing? My name is Rosie

and I’m an extremely affectionate kitten who is looking for a good home. I was brought to Pender County Humane Society by a nice lady who had been feeding me when I was a stray hanging out by a storage unit. I get

along great with the other kitties at the shelter and I

love getting attention from humans! I'm

spayed, current on vacci-nations, litterbox-trained

and under 1-year-old. I’d be so grateful to have a furever home! Come to the shelter and get to know me. It’s a cage-less environment, so you can play with me and

watch me interact with the other kitties and all the toys that are laying around. If you’d like to get things started,

please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them you’re on your way!

I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of A Pet Nanny.

Thank you!

I was featured in the maga-zine last month, but I’m still waiting for a family. Please

read about me and you’ll see why I’d be a great com-panion for you! My name is Dodad and I’m an excep-

tionally nice boy. Sitting on command is one of my tal-ents, as you can see from my photo. I’m also house-trained so you’ll never have to worry about cleaning the carpet with me around. At just 1-year of age, I’m a 70 pound Great Dane/Terrier

mix who lost my home when the family moved from a house with a yard into a small apartment. They felt I de-

served to be back in a home with a fenced-in yard. I lived happily with another dog at the time and I am fine with cats.

Children are great playmates of mine, too! Don’t I sound like the family friend you’ve been waiting for? Please call the New Hanover Humane Society at 910-763-6692 and

they’ll be happy to tell you how we can meet.

I am sponsored by Levi Donovan. Please consider adoption.

Compassionate Cat Lover Needed Desperately!

We lived in a loving home for years, then everything

changed. My name is Claire and I’m 16-years-old. My best buddy, Gracie, is a youngster in comparison at 10-years of

age. We shared a life together, a very happy and comfortable one. Then our elderly owner became ill and couldn’t take

care of us. There was no one else to take us in and we were brought to Southport Oak Is-land Animal Rescue (SOAR.)

It’s quite a change to go from a comfy home with familiar sights and sounds to the strange sur-roundings of an animal shelter.

Isn’t it sad that, at our ad-vanced age, we have no spe-cial person to love us? We

each enjoy being held and will snuggle up in your arms. We

can’t get enough kisses and are so happy to receive attention.

We appear to be in good health and are spayed, vaccinated

and litterbox-trained. We’d love to be adopted into one family. If that’s not possible, we

can be adopted separately. Please spread the word about us to your friends! We deserve the dignity of a peaceful senior life and we hope there is someone out there who

will take us into their heart. Call SOAR at 910-457-6340 to find out how you can meet us.

We are sponsored in loving memory of Speckles.

URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT OF

TIME! There must be some

mistake! I’m a loveable, playful, orange Tabby who

only knows how to be friendly and affectionate.

Doesn’t someone out there want to kiss my chubby

cheeks and take me home? My name is Citrus

(FM2225) and I’m a young boy who has been living at Animal Control since June

15. It’s just bizarre that I’ve been overlooked! I was born to be by someone’s side, or on their lap, or in their arms. I’m not picky! I do love to be held and kissed and have easily stolen the hearts of the workers here. They really want me to find a great home. If you think you can provide one for me, or if you’d like to meet me, please call Pender County Animal Control at

910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Officer Clewis can tell you what a great kitty I am and give you

Hello up there! Want to go for a roll in the grass with me? My name is Sheba and I’m a very

friendly girl, just 1-year-old. I was found as a

stray in someone’s yard. As you can see, I’m a small-sized girl with a slender build. I’m a

beautiful creamy-white and I have the softest brown eyes ever! I’ve

heard some people say that they think I’m a Sa-luki mix. I’m doing great

at the shelter and am happy and playful. I get along well with everyone - adults, children, dogs and even

cats. I’ve also already been spayed, vaccinated and placed on heartworm prevention. If you’re looking for a real sweetheart to spend the rest of your life with, I hope you’ll consider me. Just call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and they’ll

tell you how we can get together!

I am sponsored by Vivian Vanove in loving memory of Big Foot, Rondi and Freeway.

I’m a wonderful family dog named Bella!

Look at my photo and you will see how well-

behaved and obedient I am. All they did was

hold up a treat, say ‘sit’, and I sat right down

with no hesitation. I’m a 2-year-old girl who was found at Animal Control with my nine

puppies. They have all been weaned so I’m ready to find a home

where it’s my turn to be the baby. I love every-one and never meet a

stranger. I’m a brindle Boxer mix who is house-trained, leash-trained and great with children. I’m sweet, gentle

and calm and just an all-around terrific girl. I hope some-one will recognize what a jewel they would have in me. Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022. I can’t wait to get started on our new life together!

◄I’m one of three precious puppies who are looking for loving families! My name is Socks and I’m a 6 to

8-month old Terrier mix girl. I got my name

because it looks like I’m wearing socks on my paws. My two sisters

are also at SOAR. We were found at Brunswick County Animal Control,

running out of time. Thanks, SOAR, for

taking us in! We are all playful, friendly, and incredibly cute. Come pick one of us out!

◄I’m a sweet young boy

named Zimba! My fur is orange and white and I

have Tabby markings. I am being fostered for SOAR and I need to find a

home. My foster dad found

me behind a gas station in

Southport when I was just a baby. I am now living with two big dogs and a couple of cats. I get along great

with them and one of the dogs is my best friend! I am neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I’m also

loveable and friendly. Call SOAR today and ask for me!

►My name is Lilah and I’m ready to bring plenty of purrs into your life. I’m a 2-year-old, long-haired beauty who

was found as a stray on Long Beach Road. I was

nursing three kittens at the time, but I was very thin and

hungry. Animal Control found me and brought me to SOAR. Life got better as my babies were adopted and I

was given vet care and good food. Now look how gor-geous I am! I have been spayed so there will be no

more kittens in my future. In fact, it’s my hope that I will become someone’s baby. I’m a

very sweet girl who is vaccinated and litterbox-trained.

►Hi! My name is

Dixie Too and I’m a young girl,

just 10-months-old. I love to play with toys and have a lively,

friendly personality. I adore people and want to be around them all the time. Since I’m active,

it would be best for me to find a home without small children. Kids ten years of age or older would be perfect!

I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m good with other dogs and walk well on

a leash. Come spend some time with me at SOAR!

►Hello there, I’m Baby Snooks! I was found aban-doned in the yard of an Oak Island

home with no mother or siblings in sight. I was born around

June 30 and brought to my SOAR foster home on July 6. I am now a healthy,

happy, playful female Tabby. I like to play with and be held by the small children from next door who visit regularly. I also get along well with the big dog and other felines at my foster home. Since I’m a bottle baby, I’m very sweet. I’m also vaccinated, spayed and litterbox-trained. To adopt me, please call my SOAR

foster mom at 910-278-4437.

►I’m A Boxer mix named Sarge. Would you like to

adopt me? You’d be making a great choice

because I’m such a friendly, happy boy. At

around 2-years-old, I’m a neutered and vaccinated sweetheart who is leash-trained and I enjoy going for walks. I’m great with children, other dogs and

even cats. How about driving out here for a

nice visit? We can get to know one another as we take a stroll. Call today!

Belk Charity Day is Saturday, Nov. 6

It’s not too late to buy a ticket and help save the life of a shelter animal.

See Shelter News, page 43, for more details.

◄I’m Rosie! I’m a medium-sized Pug/Spitz mix and, at

just 4-years-old, I’m a smart, friendly girl who would be a great agility dog. I adore

children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I am doing fine in getting along with other dogs and have

been working with an obedi-ence trainer. I would love to continue obedience training with my new family. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. You’d be so lucky to share your life with a great girl like me!

◄Hello! This happy face belongs to me, Ming Ming! At just 2-years of age, I’m a

Boxer/American Bulldog mix girl. I have a very

sweet personality and get along just fine with other dogs and people. I’m al-ready house-trained and crate-trained and I walk

well on a leash. I am also very happy to sit on com-mand for treats! And yes,

I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. Don’t waste another moment - call today!

◄I Need a Foster Home so that I Can Get Out

of Animal Control! My name is Link and

I’m a Sheepdog/Sheltie mix, just 2 to 3-years-old. I was found as a stray and am now at Pender County Animal Control. Sunburst would like to help me, but

they need someone to foster me under their

program. I am a very sweet boy who appears to be blind

in my left eye - it’s a little smaller than the other. I’m good on a leash and I’m ready to say goodbye to this place. Help me out!

◄When I posed for this photo, my smiling face certainly disguised the rough shape I was in. You see, the Sunburst

Foundation later took me to the vet for an exam,

and I had three decayed molars that had to be

extracted, erlichiosis (from tick exposure) and

heartworm disease. I am now recovering nicely in a

foster home and doing well. Unfortunately, my medical bill is rising and

will continue to rise while I undergo heartworm treatment. Any donations toward my medical care would be greatly

appreciated. Please send your tax-deductible donation to: Sunburst Foundation, PO Box 7527, Wilmington, NC

28406. Thanks for helping me heal - I’m a sweetheart!

◄I’m Dawson and I love all people, especially children! I’m a 3 to 4-year-old, flat-coated Re-triever mix and I’d dearly love to belong to your family. I am house-trained, crate-trained, neutered, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention. I play well with other dogs and I’ve had no problem with cats. I can also sit on command for treats. Don’t I sound like a great fellow? Call today so we can meet real soon!

Shelter News & Events

Sponsor A Brick and Pave the Future The New Hanover County Animal Control is holding an ongoing Brick Fundraiser to bene-fit its new spay/neuter facility and adoption play area. Sponsored bricks, which can be inscribed to honor or remember your pets and loved ones, will be laid as a walkway in the play area and will lead up to the spay/neuter facility. Brick sponsorships start at $50 for two lines of inscrip-tion and $75 for three lines. The cost for businesses is $100. A paw print can be etched in the brick for an addi-tional $8. A portion of the proceeds will be used to equip the spay/neuter facility and adoption play area. Please call the New Hanover Animal Control at 910-798-7500 for more information or stop by the facility to fill out an order form. Order forms can also be faxed to your home or business.

Adopt-An-Angel DESPERATELY Needs Help with Veterinary Bills! Adopt-An-ANGEL is in dire need of donations to help pay its vet bills. This non-profit rescue group, which has rescued hundreds of dogs and cats at risk of euthanasia from animal controls, could possibly be just weeks away from going out of business. They are down to less than $5,000 in their bank account and the vet bills run up to $6,000 a month. Running a no-kill shelter is not cheap. If any animal gets sick, they do NOT euthanize. Instead, the animal is taken to the vet and treated. Please help them continue with their mis-sion by making a donation. They have heartworm tests and treatments, spay/neuters, shots, antibiotics, heartworm preven-tion and flea medications to pay for. They also must pay to adopt animals at risk of eutha-nasia from animal controls. Please help by sending your tax-deductible donation to: Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408. For more information, please call 910-392-0557.

Volunteers Needed: Adopt-an-ANGEL Adopt-An-ANGEL is in need of mature, responsible, dedicated people to volunteer at adoption fairs Satur-days and Sundays at Petco. Volunteers should be flexible, able to multitask and must get along with people and animals in a very stressful environment where there may be limited resources. You must be strong enough to walk large dogs, willing to carry large cages, willing to scoop litter boxes, pick up dog poop, and work with both dogs and cats. Adopt-An-ANGEL is a network of animal lovers that takes animals from Animal Control when they have run out of time or have special needs beyond what the shelter is able to provide. Through the week they also have animal transport jobs available where cats and dogs need rides back and forth to veterinary hospitals. Adopt-An-ANGEL pays no money or benefits for either of the jobs. The perk is finding a homeless animal a home or giving it a ride and doing a good deed for the day. Please call Marlo at 910-616-3708 if you are interested.

Belk Charity Sale Helps Animals The Sunburst Foundation is once again participating in the Belk Charity Day Event. This semi-annual Charity Sale benefits local charities and non-profits and will be held on Saturday, November 6, from 6am to 10am at Belk stores companywide. The funds raised will help Sunburst canines and will also go toward the vaccine and heart-worm program that Sunburst has set up for Pender County Animal Control. Tickets will sell for $5 each prior to the event. Each ticket sold is essentially a dona-tion and will be 100% retained by the charity. Contact Sunburst Foundation at [email protected] or call 910-622-0011 if you would like to purchase or sell tickets as an individual or business. Ticket holders re-ceive 20% - 70% off Belk purchases storewide, including special savings on rarely-discounted brands, plus, receive an additional $5 off of their first purchase.

It’s Christmas Pet Photo Time! It’s time to get Fluffy and Fido in their Christmas collars and have a professional photo taken by photographer Dick Parrott. It will also be a holiday gift to Monty’s Home, as part of the proceeds will benefit this local non-profit rescue. Stop in on Sun-day, November 14th, between 11am and 4pm at Aunt Kerry’s Pet Stop, 3600 S. College Road (next to the Food Lion at 17th Street Extension.) You’ll re-ceive a 4x6 print, 6 poses on thumbnail prints and a CD for making more prints, perfect for this year’s Christmas cards. All for just $25! For info, call 910-259-7911.

Page 44: PawPrints Magazine November 2010

My name is Jerry. I have bounced twice. Bounced is an

old time word in rescue that means someone sent you

back. It's kind of a nicer way of saying you were returned

because you didn't work out. I suppose that I'm really not a seriously hard-luck-guy be-cause now I'm back with my first foster dad. I really like him so much. He gives me lots of time and respect and

understands the things that make me nervous. I really don't like when people I don't know come towards me and try to pet my head as if to say good boy, good dog. I'm not sure

why this is such a bad thing? From my point of view it's just bad manners to get in someone's space without even so much as a good morning, how are you? I also don't like it when a human uses a mean voice with me. I remember from before when I heard a mean voice, bad things hap-

pened. So when I hear a certain tone, I get defensive and like any other dog, I have to let you know I really don't want you to come any closer. All I'm really saying is I need more

time and space. My foster parents are super neat and I love them but I know my rescue family thinks I need a spe-cial kind of home because I'm difficult. I'm not really. I've just bounced twice. So it's kinda hard for me to trust. You

know what I mean? I do want a real home. I'm really a very good dog. If you'd like to meet me, or find out more

about me, please call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

URGENT, URGENT! We Need to Find Homes Soon!

Hi there, my name is Page and this is my best friend Coal. We’ve lived in a home

together for many years and are so sad to be searching for a new place to lay our

heads. It would be wonderful to be adopted together, but we can be adopted

separately if we each go to a loving home. I’m an 8 to 9-year-old female

Shepherd mix and I’m a 95 pound teddy bear. Coal is an 8-year-old male Lab mix with an easy smile and a loving personal-ity. We are house-trained, obedient and

eager to please. We love going for walks, playing with children above the age of six and we have lived harmoni-ously with a cat. We would be great

companions for anyone. We are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. I do take glucosamine for some arthritis in my hips, but I am responding well. Because we’ve lived in a home all our

lives, we have great house manners and are well-adjusted, social, friendly dogs. Would you please consider adopting one of us? Or perhaps both? We promise to give you so much love and so much companionship! You’ll never be

lonely again. Please call the Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011 or email [email protected] for more

information. Hope to meet you soon!

We are sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington.

Hello, my name is

Minnie-Moo. I’m just 2-years

young and a very loving, energetic and well-mannered girl. That

means that I’m both house-

trained and crate-trained!

I love car rides and walks on the beach (or any other ad-venture you can throw my way). As a huge bonus, I am

currently residing with a professional dog trainer who works with me every day. I can get a little too excited

around small children and other animals so I should be your only fur baby. I am spayed and up to date on vacci-nations. If you are ready to begin our adventure together, please call Amy at 910-253-0501. I’ll be waiting for you.

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving

memory of Casper and Lucy.

Hi, I’m Annabelle. I am a gorgeous Shepherd mix who is 6-years-young and

spayed. I am a big girl (100 pounds) with lots of love to give! I have many

exceptional qualities. I am a great watchdog with a deep bark. I walk well

on a leash and have been obedience-trained. I am invisible fence trained, too! I would love to live

inside again and you’ll be pleased to know, I'm

100% house-trained! My requirements are simple! I need a fenced yard or

invisible fence and a home where there are no other dogs or cats. Because of my extra-large size, I would do best with older children, too. I deserve another chance to find a great home, could it be with you? If you are interested in adopting me, please call Amy today at 910-253-0501

to arrange a visit. Hope to see you soon!

Hi, my name is Jesse. I'm a precious, scaredy-

britches, sweet little Corgi mix who never felt the love

of a human hand until I was over 3-months-old.

I'm in a foster home that's got another girl doggie who used to be just like me, but she's learned that people are loving and fun and se-curity. She's helping me open up my heart to re-

ceive all the love I so much deserve. I even jumped up on the bed to sleep with my foster Mom and Dad the other day! Anyone who adopts me MUST understand it will take me some time to trust and love, and I can NOT be outside without a canvas slip collar and a halter at the same time!

It will still take me a bit to get used to the big bad world and not ever be frightened of new stuff, but I've already come a

long way in a very short time. Please call Tails U Win at 910-250-3004 or email [email protected] to adopt

me. Visit www.tailsuwin.org to view more adoptable pets.

I am sponsored In loving memory of Una, a beloved friend of Aunt Kerry's Pet Stop.

Look how cute I am! My name is Baylee and I’m a purebred

male Maltese, just 5-years-old. I lost my home because there was a new baby in the family and no time for me. I weigh 6 to 7 pounds and I love to give

smooches to my foster mommy. She says I’m as

sweet as I can be, but I can be a little nippy at times, so I will

need to be with an experi-enced dog owner and a one

person home. I love to cuddle and I get along with other dogs. I really enjoy taking walks

(I’m leash-trained) and going for car rides. As for my health, I am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. My foster mom is working with me on obedience training, but she thinks it’d be great if I could work with a

trainer in my new home. I am house-trained, but will need reinforcement once I’m adopted and in a new place. If you think we would make a great team, call NC Rescue League at 910-232-5253 or visit www.ncrl.petfinder.com

and fill out an application for my adoption.

Purrfect Pet Adoptions Please call 910-329-4700 to adopt us!

We are sponsored in honor of all cats and kittens who have found loving homes with forever families.

◄The power of prayer works! You see, I was

at a local church praying for someone to help me. Next thing I know, I’ve been scooped up and

carried to safety. Now all I need is a new family! My name is Princeton and I’m a 6-month-old male kitten. I’m a very

loving boy who is happy to be held and kissed. In fact, they call me a

certified “people cat” and an “absolute doll”. You

can rub my belly and flop me around and I don’t

mind a bit. If it’s affection you want, be sure to adopt me!

▲I’m Grouchella on the left, and next to me is Pridgen. He’s a boy and I’m a girl! We two kittens were found lost and abandoned and were fed with baby bottles. Being fed like that makes us extra

comfortable and friendly to humans. We just love to be cuddled. Come pick one of us to take home!

◄I have no issues and get along with everyone! Why is a perfect family cat like me homeless? My name is Izzy and I’m a good-natured, 4-year-old girl who hopes someone will see what a wonderful companion I would most certainly be. I’m fine with other animals, I like to be held and petted and I play well with children. I’m also spayed, up to date on shots and litterbox-trained.

◄My name is Dusky and I’m a very affectionate girl who loves getting attention from humans. I enjoy being held and have medium-length silver fur with a poufy tail. I’m so pretty! I know you will find this hard to be-lieve, but I was found aban-doned in a cardboard box. I can’t imagine who would do that to a kitty as friendly as me. I’m now hoping to put the past behind and start fresh with my new family!

◄I’m a 1-year-old girl named Bingo and I’d love to be part of your

family! I’m a very sweet and friendly feline who

gets along well with other kitties. I am

already spayed, up to date on vaccinations,

and litterbox-trained. I’m a quiet girl who just

wants a nice, cozy life with people who adore

me. Oh, and if you have a peacock feather or a few toys for me to play

with, that would be great, too. Swing by today!

►My name is Jack and I’m

not at all a wiggle worm. No sir, when you hold me

in your arms, I don’t try to get down. I stay put and make biscuits with

my paws. Some cats don’t like to

be held, but not me! I’m a 24-week-old boy who was found in a cardboard box on a hot day. My sisters, Janet and

Chrissy, were with me. They’re available for adoption, too! We were so tiny at the time. I was bottlefed by my foster

mom, so I’m very used to being with humans. You’ll never regret adopting a wonderful cat like me. Come over and

meet me today! I’ll be happy to let you hold me.

WOW Publisher, Ranald Totten, and Kizzy

Hi, my name is Peaches. You can’t tell by my

smiling face, but my earlier life was a sad one. I was

kept outside all the time and gave birth to litter after litter of

puppies. But all that has changed! My new friends at the shelter say I’ll

soon be someone’s faithful companion and, with my spay surgery complete, I’ll never have to worry about puppies again. I’m an 8-year-old, friendly and loving Golden Re-triever mix. All I want is some TLC and a nice place to

live. I lived in a foster home for a while and am fully house-trained. I discovered air conditioning is a wonder-ful invention! I’m also vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. I’m not asking for much, just kindness and good care. I’ll give you lots of love in return! Please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and let’s get started on our new

life together!

I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington. Thank you!

Looking for a well-behaved, well-trained dog who can move into your house with no trouble? Check me out, I’m Percy! I was once the much-beloved dog of an elderly couple who gave me a great life. I played with their grand-children (even snuggling in bed with them) and they took

all kinds of photos of me for their family album. Then, sadly, one of my parents died and the

other passed away later. A family member tried to take me

in, but his dog didn’t want to share the home with me. Now I’m at Paw’s Place, waiting for my chance to be a family member again. I am house-

trained, leash-trained, affectionate and playful. I’m a 6-year-old Boxer mix, 75 pounds, and am neutered, vaccinated and

on heartworm prevention. I know how to sit and come on command and, as I mentioned before, I get along great with kids. I also have a fun time with other dogs and have been playing well with others at the shelter. If you’d like to meet

me, come on out! Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297.

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

Hello, my name is Riley. I was featured here last month but I

still need a home! I’m a very loving male

Border Collie mix who is already house-

trained. I have a play-ful nature and love to go for walks or runs

with my humans. I’m a great friend to other dogs and also those tiny humans called children. I can sit on command and am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. If you’d like to share your life with a happy and affectionate boy, look no further than me! Please call PEAR at 910-675-0867 or

send an email to [email protected] for more info.

Various Local Rescues We are all from different Animal Rescues. Please read our stories!

TAILS U WIN

My name is Corey and a big old meanie out there shot me in my front leg! Oh no! I’ve been to the vet and got my leg all fixed. My doc thought I would have a big limp, but I showed him just how strong I am, because I hardly limp at all now. I’m about 3-

years-old. I'm having a blast playing with all my kitty and doggie friends at my foster home. After all I've been

through, I need a home that will spoil me totally rotten. I promise to give a whole lifetime of kitty purrs! Call 910-250-3004 or email [email protected] to adopt me. You may visit www.tailsuwin.org to view more adoptable pets.

OPERATION TOPCAT

I am a 4-year-old buff Tabby named Tater A.K.A. Mr. Potato Head. I love to hop up in a willing lap and

will use my paw to move your hand to my head so you can pet me. I get along fine with kids and dogs. I am okay with other cats but I long for a home where it is just me. I can be

an inside or outside or inside/outside cat. I think being an inside cat would be cool though as it is a crazy wild world out there. To find out more about me call

Bethany at 910-471-2550. To meet some of the other kitties here, visit www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC250.html.

November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month, so the timing is perfect for you to adopt ME! They say I am as old as Me-

thuselah - I don’t think so - he was rumored to be 969 years

old! I prefer to be called “mature” as I’ve earned that gray muzzle. My name is

Zodiac and I am a handsome, hunky American Staffordshire Terrier. I am forever loving and affectionate and give great kisses when you let me

crawl into your lap. My coat pure shines with good health and I’m neutered and vaccinated, too. Is your home the safe place I have been dreaming of? To make me a be-

loved member of your family, call Denise at 910-862-1728, right now! Don’t make me wait another minute! A Shelter Friend can be visited online at www.AShelterFriend.org.

A SHELTER FRIEND OF SE NORTH CAROLINA

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY

I’m Bentley, a 12 pound Poodle who’s had a very hard life. I’ve been abused

and some people have found pleasure in causing me pain. I’m scared, confused and very lonely. I want so badly to love

again and be loved by someone who understands how to be patient and com-passionate with me. I had to have my

fur shaved because I was so matted that it hurt to walk. I can be a little snappy - I

don’t mean to be but I just don’t know who I can trust anymore. I’m crate-trained and doing very well with potty-training. My right eye has been giving me problems and it will be removed when I get neutered, but don’t worry none. I’ll still get around just fine and will give you a run for your money. I’m vaccinated and heartworm negative. I want nothing more than to have “Happily Ever After” in my future. If you would like to be a special part of

that, call 910-640-1505 or email [email protected].

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

Hi, my name is Kiki. I am a Senegal parrot and am very

cheerful and love to whistle; I also know some words. I love to

play with toys and really enjoy shredding paper and chewing on wood toys. I am easy to handle

when I am allowed "out time" and willingly come out of my cage, but don't forget that

extra special treat if you want me to go back in. I love to eat; my favorite foods are mash, fruits and veggies. My

human companions call me a little piggy! I am looking for that special human who will take me into their home and let me be their best parrot friend. To adopt me or another of the many parrots of all species who are awaiting foster or

adoptive homes, please contact Phoenix Landing at www.phoenixlanding.org (click on adoption/foster), email

us at [email protected] or call 866-749-5634.

FUREVER FRIENDS ANIMAL RESCUE

My name is Howie and I’m a super special doggy with spe-cial needs. As a puppy, I suf-

fered a serious back injury and I’m unable to walk. I can

stand up and I do hope to walk again one day. I’ve been going to Eastern Carolina Vet-

erinary Referral for physical therapy every day. My friends

also got me a nice set of wheels so I can get around quite a bit. I love playing fetch

and I like swimming. In fact, I can move my back legs when I’m in the pool! I am 12-months-old, neutered, heart-worm negative, current on all of my vaccinations and good with kids and other dogs. For more info, please call 910-383-2100 (Monday through Friday between 8am-6pm).

Hey, this is Alfalfa here! I am a 4-month-old Shepherd mix puppy. I am one of the five dogs at Pender

Correctional Institution going through the Pawsitive Partners Prison Pro-

gram to learn basic obedience skills. I am full of energy and love to play and have fun. My trainer tells me

that I’m smart, because I pick up on things pretty quick. I am compact

and well-balanced and have friendly eyes. I am learning early socialization and training so I can follow household rules and have good social manners. I am a great family

dog who is good with dogs. So if you want a dog who loves to have fun, then I am the dog for you. To apply to adopt me, go to www.montyshome.org or call 910-262-3055. Written for Alfalfa by his inmate trainer J. Scott

PENDER ANIMAL RESCUE

Hi, I’m a Siamese mix kitten who is 1-year-old.

My name is Peanut. I am a female and a torte point. I am very sweet but a little reserved when I first meet someone new. I am up to

date on vaccinations, I tested negative for Feline

Leukemia/FIV and I’ve been spayed. My new

family must keep me in-doors only. I am playful

and entertaining to watch and I’m very neat and have good bathroom habits. To

adopt me, contact my Pender Animal Rescue foster mom, Tonia, at [email protected] or call her at 910-285-7663.

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY

My name is Beatrice. I'm a 5 to 6-year-old Retriever and Shepherd mixed girl who was rescued just before my time

ran out. I was diagnosed with heartworms, but have been

through my treatment and am good as new. I'm a really

sweet dog and get along with everyone. I'm good with other dogs and love to run and play. I may be a little older, but I've got lots of energy! I'm also

spayed and up to date on all my shots. I sure hope my forever family finds me soon. Even though they treat me great here, I'm kind of getting tired of being a foster dog. For more information on me, please call 910-271-3101.

CAROLINA ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY

Hi, my name is Boots. I am a black and white tuxedo kitty who is al-

ready neutered. I am a 1-year-old boy who

was rescued by a nice woman and turned over to CAPS. I have a vis-ual impairment due to

bilateral scarring but I am not blind. I am very playful and get along well with other cats and dogs. I love to knead

and nuzzle a soft, fluffy blanket, especially at night. I love attention and enjoy cuddling. I would love to have a forever home but I need to be with older children or adults. If you

would like to meet me or learn more about me, email [email protected] or call 910-330-1376.

ONSLOW PARTNERS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE

My name is Lucy and I am such a beautiful princess mix of Setter

and Hound. I love everyone in my world - people, children, cats and other dogs!! I just can't stop wag-

gin’ my tail and giving kisses. I am house-trained, crate-trained and vaccinated. I know basic

commands and just love to walk or sit by your side. I am about

3½-years-old, 33 pounds and am quite the mannered young lady.

You can see more pictures of me at www.oc-paw.com (Onslow County Partners for Animal Welfare). All animals

are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Please call 484-883-3552 or email [email protected] for info.

My name is Henrietta and it is very nice to meet you! I

am a black Lab mix who is very affectionate! My temperament is very loving and

mild and I do not chew. I am also house-trained! I will love any-

one, but I think I would work best with a family with a child or children and a fenced yard to run, play, and chase after squirrels and birds! I was rescued on a cold November day. I was on highway 74/76, was starved and pregnant with three little pup-pies (who I gave birth to that night). I was nourished

back to health and my sweet babies were adopted out once they were ready to leave the nest. For someone who likes my breed, I would describe myself as loyal and obedient, but I do need structure of someone to

walk and play with! I am approximately 50 pounds, 3½-years-old, spayed, vaccinated and on flea prevention. I can be a little nervous and shy because of my past but I will warm up to other dogs after a few minutes of getting

to know one another. I have been around cats, but I think the dog inside of me prefers to be around dogs mostly. If you will let me call your house my home,

please call 910-574-7741. Thank you and I look forward to playing and cuddling with you!

Your dog needs more exer-cise…and a personal trainer! Hi there! I’m Hal, a happy black

and white German Shorthair Pointer mix with a docked tail.

I’m about 2-years-old and a nice-sized dog at about 45 pounds. Typical of my breed, I have lots of energy for outdoor play, and

am a couch potato when I come in to rest. I would like a home with one, or possibly two, other

active dogs to be my playmates. I would love to be part of an active family that will take me on outings and visits to local

dog parks. I’m wonderful with other dogs at home, day care and the dog park. I’m a very loyal dog, and will want to visit with my new family several times before I ‘move in,’ so that a mutual attachment can develop. My energy level would make

me best for a family with school-aged children. I’m well-behaved in the house. It will be important for me to continue my crate training, and I will need a home with a fenced yard. I’ve studied basic obedience and learned ‘sit’ and ‘down’ on command. I’m also neutered, on heartworm prevention, I know my name and come when called most of the time. I

enjoy leash walks, but prefer to run and play! If you and your dog would like to schedule a play date with me, whether or

not you would be interested in adopting me, please call Donna at 910-508-5518. Your dog will get a great workout and have a great time! Photo courtesy of Cheryl Snyder of

Snyderneff Photography & Dog Art.

Thanks to my friends at Dineen Animal Hospital and Dog Club of Wilmington for taking such good care of me.

MID-ATLANTIC GREAT DANE RESCUE LEAGUE

My name is Carly and I'm a 14-month-old black female. I

have Demodectic mange which is mostly passed on from direct contact from the mother at birth

and some dogs can’t handle this mange due to a low im-

mune system at a young age. I am over half way done with my treatment and 90% of my hair

has grown back. I can sit, stay, lay, and am extremely well-behaved. My foster tells me

that anywhere we go, I am always on my best behavior. I play well and show signs of being submissive. I am defi-nitely a Velcro Dane. I lean a lot and can be a bit pushy when I want attention. If you would allow it, I would be a lap dog and sleep with you. For more info about me or to give me a forever home, please contact the NC Chapter

Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

My name is Lilly and I’m in a foster home. I love it here. There is a big back yard where

I hunt for lizards. I look, I pounce, I look, I pounce. Once I was

taken to a place where there were two sheep and I followed them and tried to bite their

heels. I got distracted and went to sniff some poop. The person called me back and I went back after the sheep. My person at my house sometimes throws a ball to me. I get

the ball and bring it back to play tug of war. She asks me to "Drop It." I drop the ball and she throws it again but…

there's something moving in the grass. A lizard? I check it out. My person goes back in the house. I bring a toy and

put it in her lap. She asks me to "Give." I give the toy. She goes out and throws the toy. I grab the toy, but...there is

something moving in the grass. My person goes back into the house. I would love to play ball or herd sheep, but I

need somebody who will keep after me to do the right thing. I need something to do all day long. At the end of the day, I sleep very soundly beside my person's bed. In the morn-ing, I wake her up by licking her ears until she lets me out to look for lizards. I think I'm meant for more than this. I

am young, smart, fast, and very healthy. I can do just about anything you ask me to do, if you have the time and patience to teach me. I love people, children, and other dogs. I'm a Border Collie. What can I say? If you are

interested in me, please visit the CBCR.org or call 919-682-6125 for more info about me and other dogs currently

available for adoption.

CAROLINA BORDER COLLIE RESCUE

Hi there, my name is Pappy! I am a spunky little

guy weighing in at 16 pounds, which I believe is

mostly ears! I am a Schnauzer/Papillion mix. I

am house-trained and crate-trained. I am also great with other dogs and am working on my leash-training. My

foster mom lets me sleep in the bed with her and I love it so much that I don’t make a peep all night! I am a little shy when I first meet new peo-ple but after I get to know you I will be your best bud. I am also neutered and vaccinated. It would be best for me to be in a home without young children. To find out more

about me, visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. You can fill out an application online and view other adopt-able rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed,

call 910-264-8300.

SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS

My name is Chantik (pronounced SHANTEEK), which in Indonesia

means "beautiful". I am a 5 to 6-year-old Golden Retriever and Aussie mix who is what some of you may call a

"low maintenance" dog! I know basic commands, I am house-trained and crate-trained, I LOVE to go on walks (and walk very well on a leash I may

add), and I like other dogs. I don't get on furniture and even like nap time on my own. I don't

really get into playing with other dogs that much, but I am fine living with them if I must. I'm a great size for a travel companion. I also am very unique in my look, especially my beautiful eyes, so I have been told. I'm vaccinated,

have been spayed and I'm totally ready for my new forever home. If you are interested in meeting me, contact the

Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001 or log onto their site at www.cfgoldenrescue.com.

My name is Abbey Mae. I found my-

self in rescue because my dad passed

away and my mom is un-able to care for a dog by herself. I am

approxi-mately 7-

years-old and sweet as can be. I love to

please and just hang out with my family, I get along great with other dogs, but I do enjoy chasing cats. I am fully

vetted and ready to go to my next family, whether it be a foster family or adoptive family. I have lots of love to give and love to be with my people! I’m still playful and have a zest for life! Please consider fostering or adopting me. For more info, visit www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com or contact

It’s hard to believe that a friendly, well-behaved dog

like me was found as a stray! Someone must

have once loved me, but now I’m all alone in the

world. My name is Sarah (A030731) and I’m a 1-

year-old Border Collie mix with gorgeous, soft, black and white fur. If you take me in the playroom and

hold up a cookie, you’ll see that I can sit and beg on command. I’ll then lay

down with the cookie be-tween my front paws and munch on it. I’m so adorable! I’ll also take treats very gen-tly from your fingers. I love to be rubbed and hugged and

am always happy to meet new people. There’s no doubt I’d be a great family companion. Won’t you please come visit? We just might be a perfect match! Call Brunswick County Animal Control at 910-754-8204 and tell them you’re on

your way!

I am sponsored by Adam's Folly Pet Boarding, Bolivia, NC. Thank you!
