SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST – Today we celebrate this beautiful feast of the Holy Spirit. We recall the manifestation of the fulfillment of the Lord’s assurance that He would send the Holy Spirit to inspire and protect His Church. It is also sometimes called the “birthday of the Church” since her missionary efforts began following the manifestation of the Holy Spirit.
INFORMATION ON REOPENING OF ST. ANDREW CHURCH - Late on May 26th, we received a letter from the Archbishop giving us detailed guidelines for the reopening of the church and the restart of public Masses. Prior to the reopening, we are to follow very strict protocols regarding cleaning, ensuring health safety, limitation of numbers of persons allowed entry and other practical as well as liturgical considerations. A detailed plan must be submitted to the Regional Bishop before we can be given permission to reopen. That plan will be submitted as soon as possible.
We will not have an actual date of reopening until we receive the approval from the Regional Bishop to do so. This will be communicated to you through this website as well as through email (if you are a registered parishioner). That is anticipated to take a minimum of one week from today. We hope to see you soon back at St. Andrews!
FATHERS’ DAY – Fathers’ Day is June 21st so now is the time to enroll all fathers (or grandfather or Godfather or brother, etc.) in the upcoming Novena of Masses. You may do so using the envelope mailed to you or by emailing our Parish Secretary, Griselda Saucedo at: [email protected]
NEW SECURITY CAMERAS – During the shutdown we have also had an entirely new system of security cameras installed throughout the church property. Our former cameras were inoperative due to age and have now been replaced. Together with renewed lighting, these cameras now provide considerable improved security for the parish plant.
RESTORATION WORK CONTINUING – Last Saturday, the church doors on the south side entrance (Chestnut Street) were brought back and rehung after extensive restoration. They look great! At the same time, the north side doors have been removed and taken by Evan Wilson for restoration.
The work on the church confessionals is also almost finished. The south side confessionals which were in terrible condition and unusable for many decades have now been fully restored and are functional. Now we will be restoring the north side confessionals to adhere to proper canonical norms of confidentiality and safety. That work should be complete very soon.The altar server sacristy (located behind the chapel) is now back to its original purpose which is for the vesting and preparation of the Altar Servers, Lectors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
The hardwood floors of the church have also been re-stained and waxed in preparation for the day (may it be soon!) when we can reopen.Our staff has almost completed the very extensive cleanup work which has taken place in the Pastoral Center, church, and rectory. A tremendous amount of garbage has been discarded and various offices, closets and the basements have been cleaned and organized. We have a tremendous amount of room now that the clutter has been cleared.
VERY HAPPY NEWS! – I am happy to announce that our parishioners, Shane Akerman, who serves as our Confirmation Director, has been accepted by the Dominican Fathers to begin formation as a Postulant. This is the first step into his formation as a future Dominican Friar. We are tremendously happy for Shane and immensely proud of him. In case you are not familiar with Shane, here is some information: Shane is a convert from Adventism. Not only that but he was an Adventist minister who slowly came to know the truth of our Catholic faith through personal study and prayer. He is a true scholar who studies the Patristic Fathers as well as the great Doctors of the Church such as St. Thomas Aquinas. I think he will make a wonderful priest and Religious.
There is a big challenge, however. As a highly educated man, he has a tremendous amount of academic debt. $115,000 to be exact. This is a huge challenge for him to eliminate as soon as possible. The Dominican Fathers have been very flexible in working with him, but we need to help him to retire that debt as they do not have the resources to pay it off. However, I am confident that if many of our parishioners help, we can eliminate that obstacle for him. If you are interested in helping, please contact me. Any donation is fully tax deductible as it would be made to the parish and we would provide a tax letter for you. Veni, Sancte Spíritus!—Come, Holy Spirit!
The Solemnity of Pentecost, along with the Ascension, and the Epiphany, is among the highest in precedence in the entire liturgical year (only the Paschal Triduum (including Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday) and the Nativity of Our Lord (Christmas) rank higher. Paragraph 22 of the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the Calendar in the Roman Missal, page112, indicates that “the fifty days from the Sunday of the Resurrection to Pentecost Sunday are celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, indeed as one ‘great Sunday,’ quoting the great fourth-century St. Athanasius in his Epistula festalis. The name of the feast derives from the Greek word Πεντηκοστή (Pentēkostē) meaning “fiftieth.” On this joyous day we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and, by Tradition, on the Blessed Virgin Mary.
We continue our examination the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and what it has to say about the role of music, examining paragraph 40. (The General Instruction can be found at http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/general-instruction-of-the-roman-missal/girm-chapter-2.cfm.)
Paragraph 40 deals with more specificity the role of singing in the Mass. While not every text that can be sung should necessarily always be sung, some singing should take place at ever Mass, where possible, and more singing should take place the more festive and solemn the feast being celebrated. This is the principle of progressive solemnity first mentioned in the 1967 Second Instruction on the Right Implementation of the Second Vatican Council, Musicam sacram. For weekday (also called “ferial”) Masses, fewer parts could be sung (unless the day happens to be a higher-level feast). Perhaps a brief word about liturgical days and their rank would be useful.
The days of the liturgical year are categorized by rank and importance. The highest ranking type of feast (lower-case F) is the Solemnity, which requires both the Gloria and the Creed to be said or sung (even in Advent and Lent!); next below this is the Feast (here with capital F) which requires the Gloria to be sung (even in Advent and Lent—and note, all Masses where sacraments other than Eucharist are conferred are now considered Feasts, including Nuptial Masses [weddings], even when occurring in Advent and Lent). Solemnities and Feasts of the Lord take precedence over Sundays except in the seasons of Easter, Christmas, Advent, and Lent. This year, quite a few feasts and solemnities will take precedence over Sundays, including Candlemas (back in February), Sts. Peter and Paul, and the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral church of Rome and the mother church of all churches in the world.
The principal of progressive solemnity dictates that the higher-ranked the liturgical day, the more singing should take place; incense is often used for the higher feasts, engaging all the senses in the worship of God.

SOLEMNIDAD DE PENTECOSTÉS - Hoy celebramos esta hermosa fiesta del Espíritu Santo. Recordamos la manifestación del cumplimiento de la aseguranza del Señor de que Él enviaría al Espíritu Santo para inspirar y proteger a su Iglesia. A veces también se le llama el "cumpleaños de la Iglesia" ya que sus esfuerzos misioneros comenzaron a partie de la manifestación del Espíritu Santo.
INFORMACIÓN SOBRE LA APERTURA DE LA IGLESIA DE SAN ANDRÉS - El 26 de mayo recibimos una carta del Arzobispo que nos detalladas reglas para la reapertura de la iglesia y el reinicio de las Misas públicas. Antes de la reapertura, debemos seguir protocolos muy estrictos con respecto a la limpieza, garantizando la seguridad de la salud, la limitación del número de personas permitidas y otras consideraciones prácticas y litúrgicas. Se debe presentar un plan detallado al Obispo Regional antes de que se nos permita volver a abrir. Ese plan se presentará lo antes posible.
No tendremos una fecha real de reapertura hasta que recibamos la aprobación del Obispo Regional para hacerlo. Esto le será comunicado a través de este sitio web, así como a través de correo electrónico (si es un feligrés registrado). Se anticipa que tomará un mínimo de una semana a partir de hoy.

NUEVAS CÁMARAS DE SEGURIDAD - Durante el cierre también hemos tenido un sistema completamente nuevo de cámaras de seguridad instaladas en toda la propiedad de la iglesia. Nuestras antiguas cámaras no funcionaban debido a la antigüedad y ahora han sido reemplazadas. Junto con una iluminación renovada, estas cámaras ahora proporcionan una seguridad considerable mejorada para la planta parroquial.
TRABAJO DE RESTAURACIÓN CONTINUACIÓN - El sábado pasado, las puertas de la iglesia en la entrada del lado sur (Calle Chestnut) fueron traídas y colgadas después de una extensa restauración. ¡Se ven genial! Nuestro personal casi ha completado el trabajo de limpieza muy extenso que se ha llevado a cabo en el Centro Pastoral, la iglesia y la rectoría. Se ha descartado una enorme cantidad de basura y se han limpiado y organizado varias oficinas, armarios y sótanos. Tenemos una enorme cantidad de espacio ahora que se ha despejado el desorden.
¡NOTICIAS MUY FELICES! - Me complace anunciar que nuestro feligrese, Shane Akerman, quien se desempeña como nuestro Director de Confirmación, ha sido aceptado por los Padres Dominicanos para comenzar la formación como Postulante. Este es el primer paso en su formación como futuro fraile Dominico. Estamos tremendamente felices por Shane y inmensamente orgullosos de él.
En caso de que no esté familiarizado con Shane, aquí hay un poco de información: Shane es un converso del adventismo. No solo eso, sino que fue un ministro adventista que poco a poco llegó a conocer la verdad de nuestra fe católica a través del estudio personal y la oración. Es un verdadero erudito que estudia a los Padres Patrísticos, así como a los grandes Doctores de la Iglesia, como Santo Tomás de Aquino. Creo que será un maravilloso sacerdote y Religioso. Sin embargo, hay un gran desafío. Como hombre altamente educado, tiene una enorme deuda académica de $115,000 para ser exactos. Este es un gran desafío para él eliminar lo antes posible. Los Padres Dominicanos han sido muy flexibles al trabajar con él, pero necesitamos ayudarlo a retirar esa deuda, ya que no tienen los recursos para pagarla.
