Securing this vital waterway would allow British and French warships topass through to Constantinople, where they aimed to knock Turkey outof the war.

Although ultimately unsuccessful, the Gallipoli campaign has becomea landmark in the development of the Australian national identity.

The discovery of payable gold in the colony of New South Wales in 1851lay behind the establishment of the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint,which opened on 14 May 1855. The Sydney Mint produced its firstType I sovereign, featuring a unique ‘colonial’ design, on 23 June.

There ensued an unbroken 76-year history of gold sovereign productionin Australia. Over 400 million coins were created in Sydney and atbranches opened in Melbourne and Perth. From 1871 the coinsfeatured Imperial designs with the addition of ‘S’, ‘M’ or ‘P’ mintmarksrespectively, to identify their place of manufacture. The Wedge-tailed Eagle is Australia’s largest bird of prey and one of thebiggest eagles in the world. Found throughout mainland Australia,Tasmania and southern New Guinea, the Wedge-tailed Eagle has awingspan of up to 2.7 metres, and displays a long, wedge-shaped tail andfeathered legs.

The Wedge-tailed Eagle can be found from sea level areas to alpineregions, though they favour forested land and open country, to rainforestsand coastal heaths. They can often be seen perched in trees and on rocksand cliffs, from where they have a clear view of their surroundings,enabling them to defend their territory and identify prey.
