This has been a sad week for Queen of Martyrs. As you know, firefighter Dan Capuano was killed fighting a fire on the Southeast side of the city. He and his family are parishioners. He leaves behind his wife Julie and 3 children, Amanda, Andrew and Nicholas. Dan was a devoted husband and father. He and his family were in Church every Sunday. His faith was important to him. He was a wonderful role model for all of us. I ask you to continue to keep him and his family in your prayers. Also last week we lost another parent of one of our

school families. Mr. Paul Vojacek died suddenly of a heart attack while at work. He leaves behind his wife Lucy and 3 children, Madelyn, Joseph and Valerie. He also was a devoted husband and father. I would ask you to keep him and his family in your prayers.

Enclosed in the bulletin this week, is the financial report for the parish and the fiscal year of July 2014 until June 2015. I would ask you to read it over and if you have any questions, feel free to call the Rectory for any clarifications or concerns.

I would like to extend my congratulations to Jaclyn and Jessica Prucha, graduates of Queen of Martyrs who recently were named Chick Evans Scholarship recipients. This scholarship pays for their college tuition for 4 years. They are intelligent, conscientious and hard-working young women. They reflect the fine education received here at Queen of Martyrs through our dedicated and loyal faculty. The girls recently lost their mother Mary Kay to Cystic Fibrosis. I know that their father John is truly proud of their accomplishments. I wish them well in their future endeavors.

This past week, our Adoration Chapel celebrated its 22nd anniversary of its founding. The Adoration Chapel is used regularly by many parishioners and people from the community. It gives people an opportunity to spend some quiet time in prayer and meditation. Since this is the Jubilee Year of Mercy, maybe we all could make a conscious effort to visit the Adoration Chapel this year. It could be a new year’s resolution for us. There is always a need for adorers.

Don’t forget the schedule for our Masses for Christmas Eve and Christmas—December 24th, 4:00pm in the Church, 4:15pm in Vitha Hall, 6:00pm in the Church and 10:30pm in the Church. December 25th, 7:30am, 9:30am, 11:30am in the Church. There is no 4:00pm Mass on Christmas Day and the Rectory will be closed.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

NEED A STOCKING STUFFER?

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is selling raffle tickets again this year for a new car. You may choose a 2016 Buick Encore or $25,000 credit at Ray Buick to purchase the car of your choice. The tickets are $25 each and are part of the Friends of the Poor Benefit on April 17, 2016. The drawing will take place at the benefit. Tickets will be available at the rectory or you can contact me at [email protected] if you’re interested. (Remember, last year’s winner came from our parish! I will also be selling them again in the back of the church after the holidays as we get closer to the benefit date.) Thanks for thinking of St. Vincent de Paul for your holiday gift-giving!

WISHING YOU A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR!

The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at Queen of Martyrs would like to wish you – all our wonderful benefactors – a very merry Christmas and best wishes for a truly

blessed New Year. You have helped us provide clothing and food for many families and homeless, make sandwiches every other week, and share a little joy with those who have little to look forward to. We could not do all the things we do without you. We truly appreciate your generosity in all our undertakings!

“Chris Padget was the best speaker in my opinion. He was funny and he had a really good story. I like how he knew he didn’t have a perfect body, but he didn’t care

because God created everyone in His image. I loved how everyone was very friendly to each other. You could just walk up to someone and ask them to trade different items and they wouldn’t yell at you or get freaked out. I saw God during adoration (obviously) I was at the end of my row and the lady across from me just started crying. I will share NCYC with others by telling others what I learned and actually do some of the things they taught us.”-Mikey McShane

Queen of Martyrs Students Participate in Chicago’s Safe Routes Program

Miss Cronin’s 2nd Grade Physical Education Class took part in a free Program offered by the City of Chicago. The on-foot workshop covered the practice of safe, outdoor walking skills and encouraged the students to realize the many benefits of physical activity. A Safe Route Ambassador discussed the fundamentals of pedestrian safety as the students, along with Miss Cronin, walked through the neighbor-hood. The 2nd graders were reminded to look both ways before crossing a street and to always be observant of their surroundings. The students learned many safe walking skills and appreciated the outdoor lesson!

Religious Education News On this last Sunday of Advent, we wish everyone a very Blessed Christmas and the joy of the Incarnation of Jesus. A happy, healthy and peaceful New Year is extended to all families and visitors. Happy Days and Safe Travels.

—Bernadine Smierciak, Director of Religious Education
