Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy Family, Greetings and Peace of the Risen Lord be with you always! As we draw to the middle of August already, today we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. This beautiful feast day places before us the final act of Mary’s earthly pilgrimage. The young girl from Nazareth, who gave Jesus to the world, was spared death and brought up body and soul into heavenly glory, where she continually intercedes for us with her Son. Conceived and born without the taint of sin, there was nothing in Mary’s life to keep her from Heaven. Mary has done what we all hope to do, rise triumphant from the dead and spend an eternity of happiness and peace in God’s everlasting Kingdom. I think it’s safe to say that we are inclined to forget that Mary had little idea of what faced her when she responded with a resounding “yes” to the Archangel Gabriel. It was with faith and trust, but with little knowledge, that she kept going through her days, making the same effort as we do to discover the hand of God in what was transpiring in our lives. As a woman with a human heart and human personality she experienced the joys and sorrows that is part of everyday life. In the Gospel we see Mary making her way on a road winding through valleys and over hills to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was expecting a baby. From the cradle to the cross, Mary is the silent background figure in the Savior’s life. Christ, who needed her in Bethlehem, must surely have been consoled by her presence at Calvary where she shared in His crucifixion. In Mary we see the fullness of the response we must make to God in our own lives. The whole of her life was a proclamation of the greatness of God. She realized that she was no self-made woman, but that God was working in and through her each day for His glory. Her assumption into Heaven should inspire us to see the worth of making every effort to live properly in service of the Gospel, for Mary is a living symbol of what God calls us to be. As we journey together on our pilgrim faith journey, Mary has so much to teach us, because she points forward to where we hope to be. She shows us that loyalty to Christ and a willingness to suffer with Him in this life is rewarded by complete happiness in Heaven. If we follow the pattern of her life we will share in the glory of her Son, Jesus the Christ, who is our true light and our Salvation. Let us earnestly pray and continue to serve one another, and ask our Good Lord to bless our parish family with an abundance of His gifts of grace through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. With my sincere prayers, I remain truly yours in Christ, Father John McCarthy

A Light at the End of the Tunnel We are sure that you have noticed how slowly, but surely, we are lowering the number of new COVID19 cases and increasing the number of vaccinated Long Islanders (and beyond)! As a Parish, Our Lady of Mercy has taken the health and wellbeing of all who come here to pray as an extremely high priority...right from the start. Every so often, in conjunction with our Diocesan and State directives, we have been able to slowly move back to our “normal” ways of doing things. Here’s what will be coming next: beginning July 11th weekend - - -
1. Mask wearing inside Church is the choice of each individual. (Non- vaccinated people are encouraged to wear masks inside.)
2. All pew restrictions have been removed. 3. Hymnals, bulletins, etc...will all be back in place. 4. Masks will no longer be required (but may be worn) for the
distribution of Holy Communion. We ask that you continue your wonderful co-operation with regards to respecting one another’s choices as to masks and spacing while at Church. SAVE THE DATE - - - From the start of the pandemic, the obligation to attend Mass on weekends and Holy Days of Obligation has been dispensed. Beginning with the Solemnity of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15th...this year a Sunday) our Bishop is lifting the dispensation that has been in place...and the regular practice of coming to Mass each weekend and for Holy Days becomes effective again. Those who have been coming will attest to the safety and care for everyone’s health that is in place for our parish. We continue to create an environment in which all of us can pray safely and well. We can’t wait until “all of us” are back back together again in our beautiful Church, forming the Body of Christ and supporting one another as a prayerful family. Should you have any questions or concern, please feel free to speak to any of our priests or parish staff.

Matthew 25:40
August 15 – The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary:
In today’s Gospel, even the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps with joy at the approach of Mary, the “lowly servant,” who by accepting God’s plan for her
became blessed for all generations. With love for your neighbors who have nothing, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer use…and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES GIFT CARD COLLECTION Our children will be back in the classrooms before we know it. This year, we will be collecting Target or Walmart gift cards instead of physical school supplies. Our goal is to provide each child, Kinder- garten through 12th grade two (2) $25 gift card for school supplies. The gift cards will afford the families we serve the ability and dignity to choose what their children need most, whether it is loose-leaf, pens, pencils, shoes, clothing, or a new backpack. We will start gift card distribution on Tuesday, August 17th. Please return your donation in the Mass collection baskets, at the rectory or the pantry by August 13th. Are we listening to God ?
The prophets of the Old Testament foretold that God's Spirit would rest upon the Messiah to sustain his mission. Their prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus the Messiah was conceived by the Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus on the occasion of his baptism by John. Jesus' entire mission occurred in communion with the Spirit. Before he died, Jesus promised that the Spirit would
be given to the Apostles and to the entire Church. After his death, he was raised by the Father in the power of the Spirit.
Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighbor-hoods, society, and the world. . . . We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service.
