Guest Speaker was Julie Reid And she was a very interesting and informative speaker. She is in charge of 640 volunteers at the Mercy Hospice at 61 College Hill, Ponsonby. She described the Hospice as a wonderful organisation and she loves going to work there every day. In a brief history Julie explained that the Sisters of Mercy was a Catholic order established in 1831 by Catherine McAuley at Baggit Street, Dublin. The original purpose was to take care of marginalised women and children in the Dublin population. Representatives of the order came to New Zealand in 1850.It was an 8 month voyage to New Zealand in those days and the Sisters were strong visionary women. They started several schools for girls, including St Mary’s College for Girls and Carmel College. In 1900 a large house in Mountain Road was acquired and the Mater Misericordiae Hospital was founded. For many years the hospital had a birthing unit.. In 1978 the Government removed subsidies from birth centres and in 1979 they closed the birthing unit and opened one of the first hospices in New Zealand in part of the Mater Hospital. Thirteen or fourteen years ago the Ascot Group acquired the Mercy Hospital as part of their programme of expansion, but they didn’t want to keep the Hospice. The end result was that the Hospice moved from the Mater Hospital across to 81 College Road, College Hill, Ponsonby next to the St Mary‘s College. At any one time there are about 70 to 80 patients at the Hospice. The majority of them are suffering from cancer related diseases, motor neurone disease and HIV Aids and the like. The Hospice’s main function is to provide services when individual patients reach the point where he or she has been advised that there is no cure for his or her condition. There are 16 specialised nurses who cover the Auckland Central area and provide services in patients’ homes. Daily there is a stream of referrals from Auckland health professionals. The Hospice provides a wide range of services, including respite care and symptom control. The majority of patients come from two age bands. Those between 40 and 60 years and those of 60 years plus. There are younger patients but fortunately they are much in the minority. About 300 patients at any one time are being treated out in the community. Julie described the nine hospice shops which operate in the central City area. They provide at least 40% of the funding required to operate the Hospice and its associated services. The balance is provided by the Government. There are usually about 50 volunteers attached to each Hospice shop and a paid manager. One of the benefits of the shops is they give the Hospice a public presence. Julie had no difficulty in conveying the sincere and wonderful services provided by all the volunteers.
