WATCH! “Be watchful, be alert!” As much as the Lord Jesus wishes you to celebrate his resurrection, he also wants you to keep watch for his return in glory. His warnings of this type are laced with ominous foreboding, as if to urge his disciples not to take them lightly. One feature of our watchfulness is the sacrament of Penance, also known as confession or reconciliation. A good confession should involve: 1. an examination of our conscience, a mental exploration of where we’ve gone wrong; 2. an act of contrition, expressing sorrow for our sin and the intention not to sin again; 3. the priest’s prayer of absolution, pronouncing forgiveness in the name of Jesus; 4. an act of penance, a resolution to take the first step following Jesus anew. SEAS Parish offers several opportunities for confession: Today, Sunday, December 3, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Wednesday, December 13, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.; Monday, December 18, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. (the penance service for children); Wednesday, December 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. (the adult penance service); and every Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

SEAS Parish’s principal ministry to addicts and affected persons is through SAM (Substance Addiction Ministry). SAM meets monthly and makes other efforts. Their notices are frequently posted in this bulletin.

But I’d also like to launch a somewhat more targeted ministry, SEAS HOPE Alliance, in which HOPE is meant as the acronym for Heroin Outreach, Prevention, and Education. HOPE Alliance could take a more active role in reaching out to affected persons in the community through visitation, prayer, and relationship building. I’m hoping that by listening, and more listening, and keeping track of what proves helpful, we may better understand the situation affected persons are in, and develop a repertoire of effective forms of assistance.

If you’re a good listener and want to help, or if you’ve been personally affected by addiction or an addict, please consider sharing your story with SAM or SEAS HOPE Alliance. Email [email protected] or call the parish office to make contact.

Please remember the holy day of obligation for the Immaculate Conception, Friday, December 8. The special Mass schedule is posted elsewhere in this bulletin.

The SEAS Moms’ Group meets this Thursday, December 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

SEAS Parish is in the midst of a special matching offer for the 2017 Parish Share Program: New gifts and pledges will be matched up to $25,000. At this time this bulletin was prepared, we’d only received an additional $6,000. If you’re planning to give but haven’t yet done so, please send in a pledge form or other explanatory note so that we can take advantage of the matching offer.

HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS

KNOWING, AND SHARING, THE STORY OF ISRAEL

A couple of weeks ago we looked at one of Bishop Barron's qualities of a "new

evangelist", that of being a person of ardor (or enthusiasm). This connects rightly with

another quality on his list, that of “knowing the story of Israel”. All of the ardor and

enthusiasm in the world won't necessarily result in effective evangelization if we're not

sharing the most important information - the 'story'.

The 'story' started with God creating a good and beautiful world, and then the fall of

man as sin entered the world. God responded by forming a people, Israel, to draw the

sinful world back to Him. As Israel fell short on their assignment, the longing for a Savior, a

Messiah became the hope. Jesus was the answer to that hope when he came into this

broken world, teaching us how to live, how to love - even unto death - and then rose

from the dead, showing himself by walking with his disciples, and still manifesting himself

even today by coming alive in the hearts and lives of those who are willing to admit their

need for a Savior and to allow him to change their lives.

The passion, the ardor, the enthusiasm in our evangelization comes from knowing that this

great story of Israel has come to its climax through Christ - in us! If we really look at our

lives, we'll see that the story is actually replayed in each of our lives. Barron says, "We're all

part of it. We’re all drawn into it. Come, become a member of His community, of His

mystical body, the church. That’s why knowing the story is so essential, is so

indispensable."

While we are still feeling the spirit of gratitude during this beautiful time of the year, and as

we enter the beautiful anticipation of the Advent Season, let's be sure to take some time

to reflect on where and how the Living Jesus is showing himself in our lives, moving us

from sinner to 'saved', and from 'saved' to sharing the evidence of his presence in our

lives with others! Reflect, and then share!

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! —2 Corinthians 9:1

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL NO. 11143

Don’t forget to get your ENJOY BOOKS! Keep in mind – Christmas will be here before you know it! The Enjoy coupon book would make a great Christmas present! Also – it would be a great gift for someone at a local college, or a home warming gift. And …there’s always those birthdays! Contact Sam Zinger— email: [email protected], phone: 412-334-4385 or see Terry Cummings or Jim Miller.

This weekend, December 2nd & 3rd, the Knights will be handing out Christmas seals. These seals have become a major part of our continuing support of the St. Anthony's Schools and McGuire Homes and School. Each of these establishments serve youth and young adults who are intellectually disabled and/or physically challenged. Distribution of seals throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh Catholic churches was the original fundraising method for these schools, and about 100,000 seals will be distributed this year. Each year the seal image is changed and will usually show the Bishop with one of the students from either of the schools. Please take advantage of these beautiful seals and utilize them through out this Christmas season. And as always, your continued support and donations, especially with this project, are greatly appreciated.

Brother Knights: Don’t forget to RSVP to our Christmas Party! Learn more about the Knights of Columbus, including how you can join!

OPLATKI Oplatki is now available after all weekend Masses or at the Parish Office, Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., for $3/package. Oplatki, pronounced o-pwaht-kee, is a Christmas tradition that originated in Poland. The word Oplatki means “Angel Bread”. There are 3 white wafers and 1 pink wafer, imprinted with beautiful Christmas images, in each package. The white are to be used by the humans in the family and the pink are for the family pet(s). People from all nationalities have come to love this tradition. Just before the Christmas Eve meal, the entire family gathers to share the oplatki. Usually the eldest member will begin by breaking off a piece of the wafer and giving it to another family member along with a wish for good health, happiness, etc., whatever good blessing they desire for that person to receive. This continues from person to person until all have received a blessing and a piece of the wafer. You then can do the same with the family pet(s). Take a piece of the pink wafer for each pet and give it to them along with a blessing. Pets are remembered because of the animals that were present in the stable to greet the “Christ Child” on the “First Holy Night”. So pick up a package, or two, for your family/friends and share this popular tradition with them.
