T h e P a p e r Pulpit 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Welcome to our Annual Fall Dinner! Dinner is served from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the old St. Pat’s Church. I hope you have a

great lunch, with a great group of folks served by a great group of parishioners.

Now on to the Readings from Mass: One just needs to watch the news or read the newspaper—murder, theft, corporate greed

and scandals fill the headlines, let alone the upcoming election. It almost makes you sick. Sex, gay life styles and violence fill

our television shows and movies. Life issues are at risk. Through all of this many are asking: "Where is God in all this turmoil?”

This same feeling is expressed in the first reading for this Sunday, from the prophet Habakkuk. Habakkuk's words are the prayer

of the believer who is distressed at what appears to be an overwhelming presence of evil around him. "How long, O LORD, will I

call for help, and you will not hear? I cry out to you, "Violence!" Yet you do not save. Why do you make me see iniquity, and

cause me to look on wickedness? Yes, destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises."

The Kingdom of Judah of Habakkuk's day was spiritually and morally corrupt. The people focused on themselves rather than on

God. Pagans were about to overtake Jerusalem. Habakkuk complained about God's seemingly lack of response to the

situation. He is told by God that evil will continue in people who want to live in evil. Great things will happen to those who have

faith. Good people will suffer the result of evil, but God is aware of both their goodness and the evil they fight against. The

reading concludes with a positive verse: "The just person, because of faith shall live” Habakkuk 2:4. Yes, it is true we live in a

time in history that seems morally corrupt, but you have a choice to make – live immorally or have faith. Be negative and angry

or positive and do the work of the Lord.

The readings for today are saying, "God is aware. Now have faith." It is certainly easy to say, "Have faith." When the doctor

says the condition is permanent and the world is coming down around us, it is really so hard to have faith. Well, let me rephrase

that, "It is hard to have faith amid the morals and attitudes of our lives, unless faith has become our lifestyle." If faith becomes

our lifestyle, then it can begin to have an impact on you personally and the world in many ways. Our attitude affects us and those

around. You have heard it said – do you see the cup as half empty or half full?

One of the wonderful gifts of the priesthood is the exposure I have to people of faith. Some are so cheerful and happy even in

difficult times, for example, when I go into a room where a person is dying. I'm sure you would think this would be a terrible

scene. Usually it is not. People of faith, in the midst of tears, are most often ready to let go and trust God. Many times the dying

person has such a deep faith that he/she radiates a sense of peace. I realize I am among people whose service to the Lord is so

strong, that they serve the Lord even in crises. So often I realize these same people have spent their lives saying their prayers,

performing acts of Christian charity, receiving the sacraments and living their convictions. Their faith life is so strong in their

daily lives that it is their support in their times of crises. It is easy for them to have faith because they are people of faith.

On the other hand, there are folks who seem to complain about everything. It’s not uncommon for me to hear feedback from

parishioners. I must admit, there are some folks who make me wonder if I (or the parish) can do anything right. I’m not perfect,

far from it. However, I certainly cannot believe everything I do is wrong. On the other hand, most folks will comment on the

wonderful things about our parish. What’s the difference? Attitude. So I, as do you, have a choice to make. We can focus on

the negativity or we can focus on what is positive, good and doing the work of the Lord. Let’s choose to be positive and do the

work of the Lord to make our parish greater and our world a better place.

We come to Church. We ask God to help us to serve Him in every aspect of our lives. We ask God to help us to raise our

children to be people who joyfully serve their God. We pray that we might have a faith life that is so strong that the challenges,

difficulties and crises we face will themselves become opportunities for us to place our trust in God. As we heard today from

Habakkuk 2:4 For the just, because of their faith, shall live.

Are you (or someone you know):

An unconfirmed Catholic and want to be married in the Catholic Church?

An unconfirmed adult in the Catholic Church and wish to be confirmed?

From another Christian denomination interested in learning about the Catholic Church?

Non-Catholic and married to a Catholic and have been attending Mass with them?

Not baptized and would like to be?

Are you or someone you know not baptized, not confirmed or who have not had their marriage blessed in the Church? If you or

someone you know have not received one or more sacraments, please contact me for more information.

Again, please come to our dinner and enjoy yourself! Keep positive and keep the faith. Know you are in my prayers.

God’s Blessings,

Fr. Jim Trempe
