Praise the Holy Trinity

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy

Trinity. And unlike most liturgical feast days that observe a

particular moment in God’s self-revelation, Trinity Sunday calls

our attention to God Himself, His inner life if you will.

Now, contemplating the essence of God is tricky business

indeed, as the great Doctor of the Church, Saint Augustine,

discovered in the latter part of the 4th century.

One day he was walking along the seashore contemplating the

mystery of God and trying to understand the mystery of the

Trinity. Along the way he encountered a young boy who had

made a hole in the sand and was walking back and forth from

the water to the hole with a seashell. When he would reach the

ocean, he’d fill the shell up with water and then carry it to the

hole and pour it in.

After watching this for a while Augustine asked the boy what he

was doing. In reply, the boy declared that, “I’m going to empty

the sea into that hole.” At the response, Saint Augustine laughed

out loud and exclaimed to the boy, “My child, that’s impossible!

Look how big the ocean is and how small your hole is.”

The child looked at him and responded: “And yet, it would be

easier for me to do this than for you to understand the mystery

of the Holy Trinity.” And with that, the boy disappeared.

In observing today’s Feast of the Most Holy Trinity the Church

contemplates the mysterious truth that while we can never fully

comprehend God in His essence, the Sacred Scriptures reveal

that He is a relationship between three Divine Persons: the

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Therefore, the doctrine of the Trinity impresses upon us that

divine life can be shared, not only among the Father, Son and

Holy Spirit, but also with us who are God’s adopted sons and

daughters through the Sacrament of Baptism.

This belief is expressed profoundly in the Catechism of the

Catholic Church which teaches: “By the grace of Baptism , in

the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we

are called to share in the life of the Blessed Trinity, here on

earth in the obscurity of faith, and after death in eternal light”

(# 265).

Happy Fathers Day

Today we honor our fathers and pray that the Heavenly Father

will bless and reward them for all they do for their families. We

are also reminded that one of the greatest challenges in

contemporary society is to recover the authentic meaning of

Christian fatherhood, whereby a father is a sign of God the

Father, whom the Bible reveals to be a faithful provider who

sacrifices everything for the sake of His sons and daughters.

Our New Parish’s Shield

Of the many tasks that have been undertaken in recent weeks to

prepare for the merger of Saint Anne and Saint Winifred

Parishes, an important project has been to come up with a new

symbol to represent our new Saint Paul of the Cross Parish.

To assist us, we retained the services of Benedictine Father

Vincent Crosby, a sacred artist who runs Archabbey Studios on

the grounds of Saint Vincent’s in Latrobe. He is regarded as one

of the foremost designers of liturgical vestments in the United

States and, most famously designed Saint John Paul II’s

vestment for World Youth Day in 2001 and the altar linens for

Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia in 2015.

One of Fr. Vincent’s specialties is heraldry and after several

renditions we have settled on the following Coat of Arms and

description for our new parish:

The shield expresses the union of the Faith Communities of

Saint Anne and Saint Winifred under the patronage of Saint

Paul of the Cross. The colors used in the shield represent the

Theological Virtues; blue for Faith, green for Hope, and red for

Charity.

The emblems of the two Faith communities appear in the

“chief” area of the shield. The existing symbols of Saint Anne

are placed on the left and a pastoral staff on the right

representing Saint Winifred’s role as Abbess.

The entire shield is intersected and united by a black Cross

bearing three red nails, taken from the arms of the Passionist

Order, founded by Saint Paul of the Cross.

The Cross is shown immersed in living waters, symbolic of the

waters of Baptism that unite all in Faith.

Off and Running… (from the Saint Anne School Gazette)

Who knew we had such speedy students!

The Saint Anne Track Team just wrapped up what turned out to be a great season.

Even though our team was smaller than most of the other schools, our runners placed in every meet, with many 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes and they also placed in the Diocesan Championship. Anyone who finishes in the top 8 gets points and a medal at the championship.

Samantha Barker, Mariesa Mizell, Marie Hendrickson and sisters Veronica and Francesca Balkovec competed in the developmental girls category, and took home several 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes during the three regular meets. They also made a great relay team. Caleb Betlow ran in the 50 and 400-meter events and qualified in several meets. Owen Malacki had a good showing, too.

At the championship, Samantha placed 8th in the 50-meter and 100-meter races and received two medals!

The JV Boys team consisted of Nico Mizell, Leon Vo, Isaac Betlow, David Weidaw, and Caleb Anthony. During the regular season, Nico finished top in the 100 and 200-meter runs and also placed in the long jump. Leon placed in the 100, 200, 800-meters and in the long jump. Isaac Betlow placed in the 100-meter run and Caleb Anthony in the 400-meter.

Allison Vo ran in the girls JV, but also in the JV boys relay.

The JV Boys 4 x 100-meter relay team, consisting of Nico, Leon, David, and Allison, placed 3rd in the championship.

Nico placed 5th overall in the 100-meter, and 8th in the 200-meter.

Varsity member Eli Smith placed 3rd and 4th in the long jump during the regular season with 14-foot plus jumps.

Thanks to Coach Mike Freker, who led the team throughout the season, and let them have fun playing football and tag after practices.
