Message from Fr. Rick: 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Poor St. Martha!

This faithful woman gets a bad rap mostly because of this episode from St. Luke’s Gospel. Maybe she was having a bad day already when, (it seems) unexpectedly the Lord Jesus shows up.

Martha, like any good hostess is concerned with making sure her guest is comfortable. Who can blame her for complaining?

But, don’t be too hard on her .... In St. John’s gospel we read about Jesus raising Martha’s brother Lazarus, four days dead, from the tomb. Just before Jesus calls Lazarus to life Martha, practical Martha gives this amazing confession of faith: “ ... Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world....”

So, it would seem that even as she went about her work of hospitality Martha too was listening to what her great friend Jesus was saying ....

Fr. Rick

Bishop’s Annual Appeal: You likely have received at least one request from Bishop Christopher Coyne requesting your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The diocese is getting closer to their appeal goal. They ask that you prayerfully consider the request and respond generously. In addition to monies distributed for charitable works, such as Vermont Catholic Charites’ Emergency Aid, the Diocese is a valuable resource to all parishes, both large and small.

As of July 15 St. Anthony Parish has reached 45.93% of our pledge goal of $36,876.00, with donations totaling $16,937.00. We are grateful to all of you who have been able to participate, and encourage others to learn more about your gift at work by visiting bishopsappealvt.org. Envelopes are available on the bulletin boards at the church entrance or in the parish office. Family and Youth Hike: August 16th to Bingham Falls Join us at Blessed Sacrament Church in Stowe for a 9:30am Mass with Father Schnobrich, followed by a hike to Bingham Falls. Bring a bagged lunch and wear good hiking boots. Open to the whole family! Office of Youth & Young Adults: A Shrine Workcamp will be held August 5-10 at Rice Memorial High School. We are delighted to share with you an amazing opportunity this coming August - Shine Missions, a national organization that sponsors weeks of service throughout the United States, is coming to Burlington!

The event will be headquartered at Rice Memorial High School, and then groups of teens and young adults will fan out throughout the community to serve those in need - particularly the homeless, elderly and needy. They will be partnering with numerous organizations throughout the great Chittenden County area. Finally, they are expecting close to 100 teens, including teens from as far away as Wisconsin and Virginia, as well as a group from Martha’s Vineyard.

The cost is $350 (includes all meals as well as the program). There may be financial aid available at your local parish, or please contact the office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at [email protected] if finances are an issue. SHINE has made it clear they do not want anyone to NOT participate because of financial constraints.

The typical day includes service, free time for fun and relaxation, but also dynamic evening programs that will be fun, but also inspirational and prayerful. Important! This is NOT a drop off program. We are putting together a Diocesan ‘group’ and will need chaperones. Visit the Shine FAQ page at www.shinecatholicmissions.com/faq-s or the Shine website at https://www.shinecatholicworkcamp.com/home/

Support Life: “To understand more fully how to defend and protect human life, we must first consider who we are, at the deepest level. God creates us in his image and likeness, which means we are made to be in loving relationship with him. The essence of our identity and worth, the source of our dignity, is that we are loved by God.” - USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, “How to build a Culture of Life”

Worldwide Marriage Encounter: Are you anxious and worried about many things? Learn how to make Jesus a part of your marriage and take your worries away by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next Weekends are November 15-17, 2019 in Isle La Motte, VT and September 13-15, 2019 in Huntington, NY. For more information, call John & Diane Forcier at 802-657-3083 or visit them at https://wwmevtw.org/. Agape: Join us at La Salette Shrine, 410 NH Route 4A, Enfield, NH, for a book signing and talk by the authors of Loving Life on the Margins: The Story of the Agape Community.

Suzanne and Brayton Shanley are co-founders of the Agape Community, a lay Catholic residential community on 34 acres of land in central MA. Started 37 years ago, Agape has welcomed hundreds for retreats and rural immersions to learn contemplation, nonviolence and sustainability. The community is involved in interfaith dialogue and practice, including witness and action against war and capital punishment, and has hosted gatherings to listen to those experiencing racial injustices.

Come to the La Salette Cafeteria Friday, August 2 at 7:30 PM or Sunday, August 4 at 5:00 PM; or the Shrine Chapel on Saturday, August 3 at 7:30 PM (following the 6 PM Mass). You may order your book at www.agapecommunity.org. Haven: Summertime is a busy time for us all, with vacations and fun warm-weather activities. But we ask that you not forget that there is no vacation from hunger and hurting for those who are in precarious housing situations. Kids do not have access to school breakfasts and lunches, and it is more difficult for families to stretch their food resources to cover those extra meals. The food shelf continues to see an increase in the number of families we are serving. Tell your neighbors about us, and ask for their help. Garden produce is always welcome (please bring directly to the Haven.) Haven: The most needed items this week are cereal/oatmeal, canned tuna/chicken, soup, pasta and black beans. Wish List items include backpacks, highlighters & markers and single subject notebooks. Non-perishable items may be left in the basket at the top of the stairs. Thank you!

St. Anthony Parish would like to welcome all those who are visiting with us this weekend.

Sunday, Jul 21, 2019SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Worriers have a captainThese days, who isn’t a worrier? Climate change is predicted to

be irreversible very soon unless drastic changes are made across

the globe. Meanwhile, oceans are rising, coastal areas are

flooding, weather is erratic, and food supplies are threatened one

crop at a time. If Martha were among us today, she’d be the first

to lodge a complaint. Let’s marshal our inner Marthas and raise

our voices about the need for radical lifestyle changes. And don’t

neglect your inner Mary: She needs to keep on listening to Jesus.TODAY'S READINGS: Genesis 18:1-10a; Colossians 1:24-28; Luke10:38-42 (108). “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worriedabout many things.”

Monday, Jul 22, 2019FEAST OF MARY MAGDALENE

Call him teacherShe turned toward the risen Lord and called him “Teacher,”

marking a significant pivot for human history. Mary Magdalene is

first to experience the Resurrection, moving from a fear that

death meant the end to a trust in ongoing life. In that moment,

history moved from Jesus confined to one physical body to the

universal Christ alive in the mystical body; from “head”

knowledge to trusting a voice that recognizes intimate presence;

from confusion to conviction—the authority of direct experience

announcing the best news ever to the other disciples. Why Mary?

Perhaps because she bracketed Jesus’ Passion with fragrant

anointing or because she waited outside the tomb, weeping but

hopeful.TODAY'S READINGS: Song of Songs 3:1-4a or 2 Corinthians 5:14-17;John 20:1-2, 11-18 (603). “I have seen the Lord.”

Tuesday, Jul 23, 2019MEMORIAL OF BRIDGET, RELIGIOUS

Drama with a twistToday’s first reading on the parting of the sea is so important that

the church includes it in the Easter Vigil during a series of

readings that summarize salvation history. Our hearts leap for the

Israelites who are saved. Yet some may also wonder about the

Egyptian families who mourned for their loved ones “cast into the

sea.” The church teaches us that sin (such as enslavement of the

Israelites) cuts in many directions, often hurting the innocent—

even those Egyptian soldiers who were obliged by their masters

to pursue the Israelites. Can you refrain today from a bad habit, a

sin, so it cannot hurt anyone, guilty or innocent?TODAY'S READINGS: Exodus 14:21—15:1; Matthew 12:46-50 (396).“For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Wednesday, Jul 24, 2019MEMORIAL OF SHARBEL MAKHLŪF, PRIEST

Choose the reign of GodWho, you may ask, was Sharbel Makhlūf? Saint Sharbel,

(sometimes spelled “Charbel”) was a 19th-century Maronite

monk from Lebanon, the son of a mule driver. He lived a life of

solitude, austerity, and prayer. After his death at the age of 70,

miracles were attributed to his intercession. He was beatified in

1965 at the close of Vatican II by Pope Paul VI. In his remarks,

the pope said: “May he make us understand, in a world largely

fascinated by wealth and comfort, the paramount value of

poverty, penance, and asceticism, to liberate the soul in its ascent

to God.” Many times a day God invites us to divest from the

passing world and invest in the coming reign of God. What

choices will you make today?TODAY'S READINGS: Exodus 16:1-5, 9-15; Matthew 13:1-9 (397).“Would that we had died at the Lord's hand in the land of Egypt, aswe sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread!”

Thursday, Jul 25, 2019FEAST OF JAMES, APOSTLE

Best friends foreverJames and John, the sons of Zebedee, certainly stand out among

the 12 apostles. Jesus nicknamed them the “Sons of Thunder,”

and from the stories of them in scripture, the two men clearly had

big, bold, fiery personalities. Jesus had to put them in their place

more than once. And yet, they are also described as being in

Jesus’ inner circle, an experience that changed them to the core

—James became the first apostle to be martyred and John came

to be known as the “apostle of love.” If you made Jesus your best

friend, what might happen to you too?TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Corinthians 4:7-15; Matthew 20:20-28 (605).“Whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.”

Friday, Jul 26, 2019MEMORIAL OF JOACHIM AND ANNE, PARENTS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Treasure the stories of faithSaints Anne and Joachim are known to Catholics as the parents

of holy Mary. But if asked how we know that, we might be

stumped. The truth is there is no mention of Anne and Joachim in

the Bible. Their names come to us from a second-century

document called the Gospel of James. The church does not

recognize that document as a reliable source, but the document’s

story of an angel’s promised child to an aging couple has become

an accepted tradition in our Catholic heritage. Say a prayer today

for those couples whose yearning for children goes unfulfilled.TODAY'S READINGS: Exodus 20:1-17; Matthew 13:18-23 (399).“Honor your father and your mother.”

Saturday, Jul 27, 2019The harvest is plentifulJesus talked a lot about farming in parables to teach his followers.

So why don’t Catholics have a harvest feast of some kind? Some

folk traditions have popped up over the centuries: In Hungary, the

Feast of the Assumption includes thanks for the harvest, and in

Poland, harvest wreaths are blessed by priests. The Feast of Saint

Martin of Tours on November 11 was celebrated in Europe in the

Middle Ages much the same way Americans celebrate

Thanksgiving Day today. But notwithstanding, the answer is, we

don’t need one. Every Mass is the offering of sacrifice to God.

You’re welcome to celebrate thanksgiving every day!TODAY'S READINGS: Exodus 24:3-8; Matthew 13:24-30 (400).“Collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gatherthe wheat into my barn.”

Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time
