Due to a low Mass attendance on Sunday, it was decided that before adding an additional Mass after Labor Day, we would monitor the attendance and need for the month of September. The 6:30 pm Mass attendance has increased and other Masses still have empty spaces, even after the return of Religious Education families from their summer vacation. For this reason we have decided not to add another Mass at this time. We will continue to watch the attendance, and if the need arises we can change the schedule at a later date.

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP?

Even Moses needed assistance in prayer, having his arms held up so they would not tire. Sometimes we need that same kind of help to pray — and sometimes we are called upon to hold up someone else in prayer. FIRST READING As long as Moses' hands were kept uplifted, Joshua and his men had the better part of the battle with Amalek (Exodus 17:8-13). Moses makes intercession for his people. The Israelites go into battle, and as long as Moses holds up his hands, the Israelites are successful. When he lets his hands fall, the Amalekites were successful. Aaron and Hur assist Moses to hold up his hands. This provides insight into prayer: we should ask others to pray for us. Prayer is an act of trust and love, and asking others to pray with and for us is likewise an act of trust and love. SECOND READING Remain faithful; proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or not (2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2). The two sources of our faith are Sacred Scripture and Tradition. These are the writings of the Old and New Testament and the teaching of the apostles (today these teachings would be called Tradition) for this is the series of teachings that have been passed down in and through the Church. This passage closes with an exhortation to preach the word of God, whether it is convenient or inconvenient, easy or difficult. Everything that happens

to us should be one more opportunity for us to share God’s love. GOSPEL God will secure the rights of the chosen who call out day and night (Luke 18:1-8). Jesus speaks of a widow who demands her rights from an evil judge. At first the judge does not give her what she wants, but she insists and insists until he finally gives in to her requests. This means that we must ask for those things that we truly need from God. If we do not receive them immediately, we should continue to ask. Do we change God’s mind when we pray? A better way of describing the power of our prayer is that God trusts us so much that He invites us to join Him in the decision-making process. It is not that God decides everything that we do. It is a union of the two (for God has called us to be His friends who assist Him in His work of recreating this world in His image).

REFLECTION Our readings today call us to persistent perseverance. The judge in the Gospel parable neither “feared God nor respected any human being.” However, a persistent widow elicits a just decision from him. Whether her claim was just or not, her perseverance had a profound impact on him. He feared how she might respond if he did not answer her. Her personal perseverance was powerful. The reading from Exodus paints the picture of Moses’ persistent prayer as having a positive effect on the Israelites’ battle. “As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight.” Did you notice that Moses needed the help of Aaron and Hur to persevere in holding up his hands in prayer? Personal persistent perseverance is not enough. We need the support of the community to persevere when we are tempted to stop or we do not have the strength to persist on our own. Our second reading charges us to “be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient.” We can be tempted to doubt the words of scripture at times. We can be tempted to stop praying when prayer is not answered as quickly as we would like or in the way that we would like. However, as the example of the tortoise teaches us, “Slow and steady wins the race.” Persevere in prayer. Persist in turning to God in prayer. Personal persistent perseverance with the support of the Body of Christ will make a real difference.

POLICY ON MASS INTENTIONS Church Law, Canon 948 states that “separate Masses are to be applied for the intentions for which an individual offering has been made and accepted. The priest who accepts such offerings is bound in justice to satisfy the obligations personally or by committing them to another (Cc. 989, 954-55).” In 1991, the Congregations of the Clergy issued a decree in which permission was given to accept several offerings for a collective intention at a single Mass.

The following regulations must be observed if this practice is followed:

1) The donors must be informed of and consent to the combining of their offerings before the Mass at which the collective intention is.

2) The time and place for the Mass must be announced.3) The practice may not be observed more than

twice a week.4) The offerings are to be placed in the general

funds of the parish.

These collective intentions will be held atSt. Anthony Parish on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the year, provided the day does not fall on a Church Feast or Holiday, such as Christmas. No more than five intentions can be celebrated at each of these two Masses. These intentions will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. All other Masses will be offered for a single intention only, in accord with Church Law. If you would like to have your Mass intention offered sooner than the parish can accommodate, Mass intentions can be sent to the Joliet Chancery Office where they will be sent to retired priests, who will offer them at their convenience. Only one Mass intention a day can be accepted by any priest.

If you need any clarification of this policy, please see the Pastor at your convenience.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND FROM OUR BISHOP My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “Mercy Changes the World!” On World Mission Sunday, October 23, Pope Francis invites each of us to be part of that change for our world of great need, calls us to announce the mercy of God, “the beating heart of the Gospel” (Misericordiae Vultus,12). On this 90th World Mission Sunday, our diocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, support the work of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service to the poor.

“Let us not close our hearts within our own particular concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity.” — MESSAGE FOR WORLD MISSION SUNDAY, 2016 I echo these words of our Holy Father, asking you to open your hearts as you connect on World Mission Sunday with every corner of the globe… with the Americas, where catechists travel to remote areas to bring the Good News of God’s great love to families; with Europe, where new churches are being built to welcome faith communities, renewed after years of persecution; with Asia, where six million children receive an education from Religious Sisters in some 16,000 Church-run elementary schools; with the Pacific Islands, where 1,000 young men are preparing for the priesthood, to bring the Lord’s healing hope and peace to those in need; with Africa, where those who are sick are provided with loving care at 6,400 Catholic hospitals and small clinics. And don’t forget the corners of the globe where the Diocese of Joliet serves. Your support helps us to continue our missionary work in the Philippines, in Bolivia, in Africa and in the Navajo nation. Each year hundreds of adults and young people donate two weeks of their time and talent to connect with other people in diverse cultures and live their vocation as missionary disciples. Grateful always for your generosity of spirit and heart, and confident of your missionary commitment to share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor, I pray for blessings for you and your families! Faithfully yours in the Lord,

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

EUCHARIST DISTRIBUTION

You may have noticed some changes in the way the Eucharist is being distributed…

In order to preserve the reverence in the Eucharist, it was decided to move the station from the back to the front of the church. We invite all who are physically able to join us in the front for Communion. Those who are not able, the Eucharist will be provided. Please notify an usher when you come to Mass. Once the side aisles are finished, ministers will come to the back of church. When you see the ministers approach please raise your hand. Thank you for your patience in this transition. If you have questions, please call Deacon Joe Johnson at 815-469-3750, x 111. Thank you.

In the Gospel today, Jesus tells His disciples to pray always without becoming

weary. Indeed, our prayer must always be an expression of our love for God, our family, our world, and especially for the suffering poor. Thank you for your generosity last weekend. Please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them.

Weekly Gospel/Homily Reflections…

P ersistence means to stick with something even

when it is difficult. Jesus wants us to be persistent in prayer. To make this point, He told this parable today. Jesus is telling us that God is not like the judge in this story. God is just, truthful, and loving. We can approach Him in prayer with the same perseverance that the woman showed because we know that our prayers will be heard. When we present our needs to God in prayer, it is called prayer of petition. You are familiar with this form of prayer because we offer this form of prayer at Mass in the Prayer of the Faithful.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

For Children:

Jesus tells us that persistence will pay off, if we continue to pray to God. How and when do you pray? How could you grow in the ways that you pray?

For Adults: When you pray, what do you ask for most often? How do you know God gives you this request?

To re-read the Gospel to assist with your weekly reflection, go to: www.usccb.org/bible/readings. Click to the right of the calendar for the week’s readings and scroll to “Gospel”.

Mercy Moment “I sought to hear the voice of God and climbed the topmost steeple, But God declared: 'Go down again — I dwell among the people.'" — CARDINAL JOHN HENRY NEWMAN

CATECHIST CORNER

Why Should We Petition God? God, who knows us through and through, knows what we need. Nevertheless, God wants us to ask, to turn to Him in times of need, to cry out, implore, lament, call upon Him, indeed, even to struggle with Him in prayer. Certainly God does not need our petitions in order to help us. It is for our own sake that we are supposed to offer prayers of petition. Someone who does not ask and does not want to ask shuts himself up in himself. Only a person who asks opens himself and turns to the Author of All Good. Someone who asks goes back home to God. Thus the prayer of petition brings man into the right relationship to God, who respects our freedom.

PRO-LIFE REFLECTION and PRAYER “He will flee from oppression and violence,

for their blood is precious in His sight.” — PSALM 72:14

This psalm foretells the Messiah and describes the effects of His coming. The Messiah holds the blood of human lives as precious, and therefore He brings an end to oppression and violence. He is on the side of the helpless.

Let us praise You, the God Who sets us free from violence, and cooperate with Your grace to free the oppressed.
