T hey are on theway! The 15 duosparticipating in

the 12th edition ofTransat Ag2r La Mondi-ale set sail from the portof Concarneau, in Brit-tany, in France, on Sun-day, April 6. Their des-tination is Saint Barth,by way of La Palma, with an obligatory routeby way of the CanaryIslands. After a finalweather briefing and afinal farewell on thepontoons, the sailors leftthe starting line at 1pm(7am in Saint Barth), fora short itinerary in thebay of Concarneau,

before hitting the openseas.

The winners from 2012,Gildas Morvan and Char-lie Dalin (Cercle Vert)had a great start, but as ofthe first night, the com-petitors ran into ratheraggressive weather con-ditions with winds fromthe south-southeast blow-ing between 20 to 25knots, with gusts up to 40knots and swells as highas three meters. Yet thebiggest challenge was acold front and the associ-ated perturbations. Inthese conditions, thebiggest challenge for the

skippers was when tosuccessfully tack as theyheaded toward Cap Finis-terre, in Galicia, at theextreme northwest coastof Spain, as the goal is tohead me north west ofSpain. “It is not good toinvest too far to the west,as the goal is to headsouth as quickly as possi-ble,” says Corentin Hore-au, sailing with MichelDesjoyeaux aboard Bre-tagne–Crédit Mutuel Per-formance.

Faced with strong seas, the leading duo of CercleVert lost their mast just55 miles from the coastof Brittany, at about1:15am on Monday(9:15am on Sunday inSaint Barth), as they triedto adjust their sails to thewind. Gildas Morvan andCharlie Dalin wereforced to head back toshore using their motor, and sadly abandon therace. Early leaders—Erwan Tabarly andThierry Chabagny (Gedi-mat), Gwenolé Gahinetand Paul Meilhat

(Safran-Guy Cotten), andNicolas Lunven and EricPéron (Generali)—weresailing so closely togeth-er at the start of the weekthat it looks like therecould be a close finishwhen the boats reachSaint Barth.

The 14 remaining duossailing on single-hullFigaro Bénéteaus areexpected in Saint Barthafter three weeks of sail-ing. The Transat Ag2rLa Mondiale attackssome of the top names inocean racing, such asArmel Le Cleac’h, theonly double winner ofthe event to date, as wellas top sailors such asMichel Desjoyeaux (Bre-tagne–Crédit Mutuel Per-formance), Jean Le Cam(sailing with GildasMahé on Interface Con-cept), and Eric Péron(teamed with NicolasLunven on Generali). Asa result the competition isvery high this year for arace that will be a pas-sionate battle right to thefinish line!

TRANSAT AG2R LAMONDIALE

Their destination is Saint-Barth,where they are expected after threeweeks of sailing. As of the first night, the sailors met with challenging wea-ther conditions. Yes, to help support this cause, weare organizing a gala soireepresided by Bruno Magras, on theevening of Wednesday, April 16at the Eden Rock-St Barths, withan auction to benefit the ICM.Professor Saillant will present thegoals of the foundation at thattime. I amespecially thinking of the Citroendriving suit donated by SébastienLoeb, world rally champion. Orthe Nike polo shirt signed byRafael Nadal. Or Olivier Giroud’sjersey signed by the entire Arsenalteam. was a sure bet. We wanted to create aquality event accessible to everyone.Today we have a higher-level ofcompetition. Once again this year wehave some very renowned sailors. What all of the participants have incommon is their passion for sailing, and their love of Saint Barthélemy, asthe key to our success is a sense ofconviviality. The crews like to comehere since they know that can alsoenjoy the beaches, gourmet dining, and fine wines. And we must thankall of our sponsors, of which theregatta has many. I also have to thankour service providers and volunteers. It is not so easy today to find peoplewho are able to give so much of theirtime. I think they do it because theyenjoy this event. The success of LesVoiles de Saint-Barth is made possi-ble by the professionalism of every-one involved. That is somethingimportant to remember.

A GALA SOIRÉEFOR A GOOD CAUSEThe organizers of Les Voiles deSaint-Barth, in collaboration with theCollectivité, has decided this year tosupport the scientific goals of theBrain and Spine Institute (ICM) inParis, a foundation created andpresided by professor Gérard Sail-lant. T he name ‘Saint Barth’embraced by twoarabesques evoking the sil-

houette of a pelican, with the threeletters ART in bold, comprises thenew logo that will be used to helppromote the destination of SaintBarthélemy. The Tourism Com-mittee (CTTSB) will use it, aswell as local professionals andbusinesses desiring to identifywith this “banner,” to pick up onan expression used by Nils Dufau, vice president of the Collectivityand president of the CTTSB. Thenew logo for Saint Barthélemywas first presented during theawards ceremony of the St BarthBucket Regatta, on Sunday,March 30, in front of town hall.

The goal of the new trademark isto employ a strong graphic identi-ty as a marketing tool to betteridentify the island and its assets,as is the case for countries such asBrazil, cities such as Madrid orMontpellier, or a region such asBrittany. More precisely, the logois designed to help the destinationof Saint Barth distinguish itselffrom the competition, especiallyin terms of potential investors orguests, as there are other high-endtourist destinations than SaintBarth. Of course, Saint Barthenjoys the proximity to the UnitedStates and benefits from a largenumber of American tourists, butthere are other destinations suchas the Seychelles, the Maldives,Mauritius Island, and others, thatare attractive, so that beautifulbeaches with fine sand and sun allyear long are not enough to makea destination stand out.

To differentiate the island fromother destinations, “It seemed nec-essary to reinforce our image, andto have a precise positioning,”notes Dufau. The new logo andtrademark were developed in col-laboration with the marketingconsulting firm, K Consulting, with the idea of promoting theidea of art. “Until now, ‘The art ofbeing an island’ has been the slo-gan of the Tourisme Committee.Going forward, we will promoteart, such as the art of a lifestyle,”indicates Inès Bouchaut-Choisy,director of the CTTSB.

The island promotes a Frenchlifestyle, mixed with a Caribbeanessence. This is especially true forfine dining, as in Saint Barth, where culinary excellence is anasset. In this light, the CTTSBhas launched The Taste of SaintBarth, a food festival in the fallthat will build on the success of apilot edition last November. Theidea is to invite acclaimed chefs, such as those with Michelin stars, from France or Sweden, for exam-ple, to work in kitchens across the

island to create gourmet menus.

In addition to promoting the art ofa lifestyle, the goal is to promoteart, strictly speaking, in order tohelp distinguish Saint Barth fromother destinations. In this domain, however, there is still a lot todevelop. “There are already a cer-tain number of cultural events onthe island, including a music festi-val, a book festival, a Caribbeanfilm festival,” notes Bouchaut-Choisy. “By taking this newdirection, the goal is to help theseevents to grow,” she adds.

Among other new projects is onededicated to contemporary artevery December, in the same veinas the popular Art Basel event inMiami. This is in keeping with theclientele of Saint Barth, as seen bythe fact that art dealer and galleryowner Larry Gagosian has beenorganizing exhibits in Saint Barthfor some of his artists, betweenChristmas and New Year.

This new positioning is not simplya question of marketing. ../..

../.. It supposes thatthe Collectivité will adopt atrue cultural policy. Anexample of this was votedin effect by the territorialcouncil at their meeting onMonday, March 31, whenthey increased the possibil-ity of temporary admissiononto the island for works ofart, allowing them to beexonerated of import duties

if they are not sold, andeventually leave the island,This will help facilitate theplanning of art exhibits inthe future.

The next successor toTifany Lédée andAlizée Delemazure as

Miss Saint Barth will be ableto participate in the MissWorld competition. The asso-ciation Miss Saint Barth, whose president is MaryseBerry-Chinon, was given per-mission to do so by the groupthat selects candidates fromthe Caribbean region. It prob-ably wasn’t too difficult topersuade David and MoanaSaran Luu, the directors of thatgroup, as they love the island andcalled their organization St BartsQueen, when they created it sever-al years ago. In 2011, they alreadypresented a candidate from SaintBarthélemy in the Miss Worldcompetition: Johanna Sansano, first runner-up to Tifany Lédée.During the finals at Earl’s Court inLondon, Sansano did a great joband took 17th place, which wasthe best performance of all of theFrench candidates in the 60th edi-tion of the pageant.

The Miss World pageant is uniqueas it is open to candidates fromnumerous territories, even thosethat are not independent, which isthe case for Saint Barth and Tahiti,

for example. Presented for the firsttime as the candidate of the MissSaint Barth association, the youngwoman representing SaintBarthélemy will rub shoulderswith the future Miss France, or herfirst runner-up, and maybe evendo better than they will at the elec-tion of Miss World 2014, onceagain in London, in November.“Or maybe next year to have moretime to prepare,” says Berry-Chi-non.

The next Miss Saint Barth willwear her crown for a two-yearterm, following her election onAugust 9, 2014. Candidates canalready apply, as long as they arebetween the ages of 17 and 22,measure at least 5.5”, and not haveany visible piercings or tattoos.

“To represent Saint Barthéle-my, we hope to present notonly an image of beauty, buteven more,” explains Berry-Chinon. “Most of the candi-dates are still students and wewant to help them prepare fora professional career, bydeveloping additional quali-ties,” adds the president of theassociation.

Since a good address book isalways useful, the Miss Saint

Barth association hopes to create alocal branch of the Junior Cham-ber International (JCI), a globalvolunteer organization comprisedof 200,000 young women andmen, aged 18 to 40 years, withabsolutely neutral political andreligious views. Plus professionalsand business leaders, as well aseminent celebrities, who take partin this organization that is part ofother international entities such asthe United Nations, UNESCO,and UNICEF.
