KRISTALLNACHT OBSERVANCE – We have received an invi-tation from Rabbi Charles Popky and the membership of the White Meadow Temple to join them in an interfaith program to be held at the White Meadow Temple (153 White Meadow Road) on Sunday, November 6th at 7 p.m. The program will be in observance of Kristallnacht, an organized Nazi pogrom marking the first deporta-tion of Jews to concentration camps. North Jersey HaZamir, part of an international teen vocal group, will present choral selections ap-propriate for this occasion, following which we will view a docu-mentary film, “Margarit-NotA23029,” produced by Peppy Margolis, Director of Cultural Outreach T Raritan Valley Community College. There are some disturbing scenes from the Holocaust in the film; therefore, we recommend this program for adults and teens of at least high school age who are informed about its content in advance. Both the producer and Margit Feldman, the main character of this film, will be attending and will participate in the discussion that follows. Ms. Feldman was born on the same day of the same year as Ann Frank and both were sent to the same concentration camp; however, unlike Frank, Ms. Feldman survived. Following the program coffee and dessert will be served. Father Zig will be attending. Please notify the parish office if you will be attending no later than Thursday, Oc-tober 27th so that we can notify the temple of how many of our pa-rishioners will be in attendance.

ALTAR SERVER SCHEDULE ~OCTOBER 23RD

My Dear Parishioners, As we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day we also mark the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Old Testament and Gospel readings for this Sunday direct our attention to PRAYER and its various components. The Sacred Scriptures speak of the significance of prayer in the life of a believer and within the community of believers.

Indeed, prayer is both personal and corporate. Both types are important, both types are our tradition as the Sacred Scriptures at-test. We know that prayer is ongoing, never should it come to a conclusion but rather it must be persistent. All this is evidenced in the Scriptures and is for our instruction and encouragement. In today’s second lection from the Apostle Paul’s second corre-spondence to Timothy we read: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” I know that our corporate and personal prayer will be enhanced by the upcoming PARISH MISSION which will take place from Monday through Wednesday, November 14-16. Our parish mission will be led by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The mis-sion will be conducted at both Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Saint Cecilia Church, Sacred Heart during the day and Saint Cecilia in the evening. A complete schedule of the parish mission will be published in the parish bulletin. The celebration of the Holy Mass, the Sacrament of Penance, Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and other services will be conducted to draw us into prayer and worship. A parish mission is nothing new for the Catholic Church. We have a long tradition of them being conducted by some very holy people such as Saint John Eudes and Saint Louis deMontfort, just to name two. The parish mission is an opportunity for a “spiritual recharge” for a parish. Having outside clergy or religious come into a parish is beneficial for both laity and clergy. The “spiritual lift” which comes from the parish mission will be that necessary fuel which will keep us “equipped for every good work.” This is OUR RETREAT, our time as a parish to be together for three consecutive days (nights) in prayer, praise and spiri-tual formation. I ask that YOU make a commitment to be faithful for these three days (nights) and rearrange your calendar now so that our parish mission will be your priority! DUE TO THE PARISH MISSION I HAVE CLEARED THE PARISH CALEN-DAR AT SACRED HEART OF JESUS CHURCH AND SAINT CECILIA CHURCH FOR MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14-16. NO MEETINGS OR PREVIOUSLY PLANNED EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE ON EITHER PARISH PROPERTY DURING THE PARISH MIS-SION! Our only focus during these days will be prayer and spiritual renewal, nothing else! Please remember me in your prayers as I assure you of mine! Father Zig

Sts. Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf, Charles Garmier, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lallemant, Noel Chabanel, John de La-lande and Rene Goupil, French Jesuits, were among the missionaries who preached the Gospel to Huron and Iro-quois Indians in the United States and Canada. They were martyred by the Iroquois Indians in the years 1642, 1648 and 1649. Pope Pius XI beatified them on June 21, 1925, and in 1930 they were canonized by the same Pope. St. Isaac Jogues, in particular, is outstanding . In the course of his labors preaching the Gospel to the Mohawks in Canada he penetrated to the eastern entrance of Lake Superior, one thousand miles inland and became the first Euro-pean to do so. In 1642, he was taken captive by the Iroquois and imprisoned for thirteen months. During this time, he underwent cruel tortures and ultimately lost the use of his hands. After being rescued by the Dutch, he returned to Canada two years later, and in 1646 he visited Auriesville, New York, to negotiate peace with the Iroquis. He is said to be the first Catholic priest to have set foot on Manhattan Island. On a third visit to the Iroquois, the Bear clan, which believed that he was a sorcerer, blamed him for an outbreak of sickness and the failure of their crops. Accordingly, he was seized, tortured, and beheaded. PRAYER: God, You consecrated the spread of the Faith in North America by the blood of St. Isaac Jogues and his companions who were preaching the Faith, to the Indians. Through their intercession let more people everywhere respond to the Good News of salvation. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints; Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999; New Jersey
