Page 6 September 20 2020 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
My dear parishioners
Today we commemorate the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to worship on the Lordrsquos Day The Gospel reading
for this Sunday contains a parable the Lord Jesus spoke to His listeners regarding the ways of God In this story we discover
that the ways of God do not line up with what we would do Many times our sense of justice does not correspond with the
Almighty The prophets of the Old Testament often spoke of this reality as we find it in todayrsquos first reading from Isaiah ldquoAs
high as the heavens are above the earth so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughtsrdquo The
Sacred Scriptures invite us to consider the ways of God and to adapt these ways as we live our lives in the ldquoKingdom of
Godrdquo In the epistle reading for this Sunday the Apostle Paul encourages us ldquoOnly conduct yourselves in a way worthy of the
Gospel of Christrdquo
Conducting ourselves in a way worthy of the Gospel of Christ will put us in opposition to the culture in which we live Gospel
-living will mean that we will find ourselves in many times differing from some of our relatives and acquaintances We will
not be sharing the same ldquoenjoymentsrdquo or goals Where we spend our time and resources will be much different from others
Our friends may change because of the values we hold Gospel-living is not easy and will even cause some suffering but we
know that we are not alone In todayrsquos Responsorial Psalm we sing out THE LORD IS NEAR TO ALL WHO CALL UPON
HIM Yes our God is with us to strengthen and comfort us in our efforts to be faithful to His ways For we know that His
ways are not the ways of the world
Today we will inaugurate the DIOCESAN MINISTRIES APPEAL (formally known as the Bishoprsquos Annual Appeal) Our
new Bishop His Excellency Bishop Kevin Sweeney is asking us to join with him in helping those in need through this
yearrsquos appeal Damiano Servidio has accepted my invitation to serve as this yearrsquos parish coordinator for ldquoLove Thy
Neighborrdquo which is this yearrsquos theme I have asked him to speak briefly at all the Masses so as to ldquokick offrdquo this important
facet of our Christian stewardship I am most grateful to Damiano for assisting me in this very important project
ldquoMoney makes the world go roundrdquo and it funds the ministries which serve countless numbers of families and individuals
who come to us for help in their need Requests for money are constant within the secular world and people give In the
Church world of the ldquoKingdom of Godrdquo the requests for funding also occur but these requests bring eternal rewards because
they aid the needy The secular worldrsquos requests bolster selfishness and indifferentism which makes suffering more profound
As secular people will be very generous in supporting trivial things so may the people of faith be generous in making the
Kingdom of God a reality in our midst
God bless you Father Zig
ST MATTHEW Apostle and Evangelist
September 21 Patron of Bankers
ST MATTHEW one of the twelve Apostles is the author of the first Gospel This has been the constant tradition of the Church and is confirmed by the Gospel itself He was the son of Alpheus and was called to be an Apostle while sitting in the tax collectorrsquos place at Capernaum Before his conversion he was a publican ie a tax collector by profession He is to be identified with the ldquoLevirdquo of Mark and Luke
His apostolic activity was at first restricted to the communities of Palestine Nothing definite is known about his later life There is a tradition that points to Ethiopia as his field of labor other traditions make mention of Parthia and Persia It is uncertain whether he died a natural death or received the crown of martyrdom
St Matthewrsquos Gospel was written to fill a sorely-felt want for his fellow countrymen both believers and unbelievers For the former it served as a token of his regard and as an encouragement in the trial to come especially the danger of falling back to Judaism for the latter it was designed to convince them that the Messiah had come in the Person of Jesus our Lord in Whom all the promises of the Messianic Kingdom embracing all people had been fulfilled in a spiritual rather than in a carnal way ldquoMy Kingdom is not of this worldrdquo His Gospel then answered the question put by the disciples of St John the Baptist ldquoAre You He Who is to come or shall we look for anotherrdquo
Writing for his countrymen of Palestine St Matthew composed his Gospel in his native Aramaic the ldquoHebrew tonguerdquo mentioned in the Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles Soon afterward about the time of the persecution of Herod Agrippa I in 42 AD he took his departure for other lands Another tradition places the composition of his Gospel either between the time of this departure and the Council of Jerusalem ie between 42 AD and 50 AD or even later Definitely how-ever the Gospel itself depiciting the Holy City with its altar and temple as still existing and without any reference to the fulfillment of our Lordrsquos prophecy shows that it was written before the destruction of the city by the Romans (70 AD) and this internal evidence confirms the early traditions
PRAYER God You chose St Matthew the Publican to become an Apostle By following his example and benefiting by his prayers may we always follow and abide by Your will Amen
