Annual Report of the Rector “Saint Gabriel the Archangel proclaims and celebrates the Good News of God’s grace and life-changing love for all.”

You’ve heard me repeat this Sunday after Sunday as I stand to share parish notices and other announcements prior to each celebration of Holy Eucharist.

This is what we’re about, and this is what we’ve been doing, as a church community, for fifty-five years!

This 2015 annual report reflects the observations of dedicated leaders, including ministry chairs, elected vestry members, and paid staff. Behind these fine people are many more church members and parishioners, and countless others in our neighboring communities who are impacted for the sake of Christ.

I thank each and every one of those in this growing and thriving congregation who are part of the body of Christ here on Quincy Avenue.

God’s blessings are recounted in these pages. Community-wise, we attract newcomers every week and are blessed to add to our numbers through our hospitality towards guests. Buildings-wise, we continue to enhance the church campus, inside and out, and maintain and aging physical plant. We count 14 outside groups that currently use Saint Gabriel for their meeting purposes, so our buildings are part of our mission and ministry. Finance-wise, we make our budgets, practice financial transparency and accountable stewardship, fulfill obligations and hold no indebtedness to outside institutions. Impact-wise, Saint Gabriel impacts a congregation of over 400 members and an average Sunday attendance of 170-180 per year. However, our impact reaches beyond the walls of Saint Gabriel. We contribute substantial funds (over $40,0000) to committee-directed outreach, and an additional $40,000+ to the Episcopal Church in Colorado as part of our canonical pledge, plus additional fund drives for local projects in and outside the parish.

Let me recap what I see as some of my own highlights from this past year: • Underwent a ten-year discernment exercise with parish leaders following significant

staff transitions. We celebrated the ministries of the Reverends Marilyn Schneider and Karen Henwood, as well as that of Tracy Methe, and cast a vision for adding a full-time assistant rector to help us grow into a community that is impactful for God’s kingdom. We also welcomed Megan Hirschy as our Children and Family Minister.

• Completed a nave restoration project by adding color and cushions, and approved an expansion of the columbarium as part of the Saint Francis Garden.

• Employed our ministry resident, Chris Hirschy, in developing the Eucharistic Visitor program as well as investing in our young adults and our youth confirmands. ReFrame, a curriculum from Regent College in Vancouver, formed the study for young adults at Saint Gabriel in a winter 2015 small group experience.

• Extended our youth ministry opportunities through a major event to the U.K. as a group from Saint Gabriel joined youth and adults from St. Michael in Colorado Springs on a pilgrimage across the British Isles. Under the direction of Dexter Nocon our children, youth and families undertook a “cross-walk” for a mile along Quincy Avenue on Good Friday.

• Launched a fall effort called RenewalWorks to help us gauge how we might deepen our discipleship and evangelism efforts at Saint Gabriel. This Forward Movement tool consisted of a parish-wide survey in which we rejoiced in receiving a 70% completion rate (of active attendees). The fruit of this analysis will bear fruit in 2016 and beyond, with God’s help.

On a personal note, our family thanks you for your support and encouragement. In ten years we’ve watched our own children grow from youngsters to young adults. With our daughter in college this year – and recovering well from a brain injury in her first weeks of school – to our son’s entering his sophomore year of high school, we, too, are experiencing life together in new ways. CJ and I are glad to be with you as we seek to bear witness to the hope that faithful living in a faithless world brings. You and I are part of a story that reaches from the smallest atom to the grandest expanses of the cosmos – a story of God’s redeeming love.

May the blessed Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – be with you, now and always.

Annual Report of the Senior Warden In a book titled “My Church is NOT Dying”, by Episcopal lay preacher Greg Garrett from Austin, Texas, I found some focus for our efforts at Saint Garbriel parish for 2015. We are called to examine our “comfort” here while all around us there is discomfort and a crying need for involvement, change, proclamation and a new sense of mission in our Christian beliefs. Older, comfortable, ways will not serve our world in the future.

Accepting that challenge in 2015, your parish and vestry began to identify the “whys, whats and hows” of our lives together and to ask all of us to reflect on both our existing, tangible programs and in our hearts for direction for the church. Some successes stood out, definitely, and some opportunities revealed themselves as well. Ministry leaders have spoken to their programs in the pages that follow. Guidance, both in prayer and from your inputs, will shape both the futures of continuing efforts and lead to new efforts in “disturbing the comfortable.”

Your responses to our questions of commitment and involvement highlighted three comprehensive points: first, we need to expand ordained staff; second, we must look to the future of our facilities so as to not burden others with deferred maintenance, and third, our youth ministry must join in with the greater effort being championed at the Diocesan level by the development of the Cathedral Ridge site and its outreach.

The First Fruits stewardship program results showed that you are willing and committed to the initial funding of many of the components of these efforts. Budgets for these efforts reflect your willingness to become a part of a greater effort to assure the life and message of Christ lives among us at Saint Gabriel Episcopal Parish. This is the beginning. Life flows from this Parish.

It has been a privilege and honor to serve you these three years. May we work, live and love together in the Hope of Christ.

Administration and Operations Junior Warden

It is hard to believe that three years have passed since I embarked on the junior “wardenship”. It has been marked by the rhythms of the different seasons, both regarding the weather and the church calendar.

I have first to thank the outstanding work of the Church Campus Art & Architecture Committee (C2A2) with Nada Graves, Tim Green, Jerry Mounts, Sally Plummer, Frank Thornton, Tiffany Winget (and Gary Sagert-now living in Hawaii), without whom we would not have a long list of accomplishments. They all made the warden’s job much easier and offered sage advice on many topics.

At my final meeting as junior warden in December, we all (including Father Chris) reflected on what was accomplished over these past three years. First and foremost, we thought people noticed how the building and grounds have improved (new handrails, new crystal clear parish hall window glass, no more leaky downstairs classrooms or water heaters, pew and kneeler cushions, repaired west side doors, Quincy church sign interior update, re-staining of woodwork on north porch and HVAC fence, flowers and more flowers) and also the installation of the remarkable nave and sanctuary artwork.

Secondly, a big thank-you also goes to church staff that has helped with taking care of more mundane and general maintenance items (backflow leaks, toilet leaks, fire extinguisher re-charging, clock changing, snow stake placement, use of snow melt etc.).

I also wish to thank the parishioners who stepped up during our three very successful Spring Clean-Up days and also for the “Greening of the Church” in Advent.

Finally, the C2A2 committee has also focused on the future needs of the church. We developed a “Wish List” of projects that could be rolled into a future capital campaign. Smaller items include: replacement of glass in west end of gallery, improved lighting in St. Teresa room, re-locating microphone system on lectern, and repainting walls where roof leaks have occurred. Larger items include major repair/replacement of church roof, parking lot re-grading/ice abatement, new porcelain fixtures in men’s bathroom and new carpeting for parish hall/offices.

I am thrilled that Philip Jolas has agreed to take the wheel as Junior Warden and I know that he will do a superb job of steering, with the help of his very capable committee.

I leave the post with much gratitude in my heart. It has been a great pleasure serving as a church officer along with the rest of the vestry at Saint Gabriel. Together, we have made our church a beautiful and welcoming place for ALL to worship our Lord and God.

Communications The new website was launched with a cleaner look and ability to make changes internally, rather than bringing someone in to update the website, which should provide cost savings.

Constant Contact is now being used for sign-ups for most parish events. While sign-ups on the bulletin board in the parish hall are still available, more people are taking advantage of this on-line capability.

Posts on Facebook are increasing with both informational and entertaining content. A communications sub-committee is being formed to explore other social media options and develop an ongoing strategy for Saint Gabriel.

The parish hall now has Brightsign technology, which allows pertinent information to be displayed on the large screen television in the parish hall during coffee hour and before and after services on Sunday.

File-sharing capability has been improved through the use of Google Docs. Sarah will be transitioning to Office 365 for file-sharing in the near future. Use of this option by all parish committees is highly recommended.

The policies and procedures in the event of inclement weather have been established and communicated. Furthermore, Father Chris and Sarah both have the capability to change the outgoing phone message to communicate updates in church schedules due to weather.

Due to a significant use of our facilities by Saint Gabriel and outside groups, policies for coordination and communication have been established to keep things running smoothly.

Sarah worked with Theresa Blumberg to develop an Assistance Resource brochure. This resource details local aid groups that can provide a variety of support services to those who come to Saint Gabriel looking for some form of help. These brochures are available in the entry hallway and the sanctuary entrance.

Treasurer The Projected Income for 2015 of $515,249 suffered a shortfall of $30,961. However with judicious monitoring of the funds available St. Gabriel’s was able to fund all of the ministries i.e. Youth Group, Outreach, Special Events within budgeted projections, the end result being the furtherance of Saint Gabriel’s Mission and Vision within both our church and neighborhood communities. As Treasurer it is my duty to report to the Vestry and congregation just how we get it done. A monthly Financial Statement is posted on the bulletin board. The final pages of this Annual Report consist of abbreviated summaries of 2015 financial performance and 2016 projected overviews of both income and expenses. Any questions cheerfully answered.

Finance Committee The St Gabriel Finance Committee meets several times a year to serve as an advisor to vestry and staff in the financial oversight of the parish.

The Committee is charged with three, primary responsibilities: 1) To ensure and review the regular production of accurate and comprehensible monthly financial statements,

2) to ensure and review regular internal and occasional external audits, and 3) work closely with staff and vestry to oversee and prepare the annual budget and the annual financial report – subject to vestry review and approval.

The committee is currently comprised of its Chair, Joel Johnson, Hal Roth, Richard Cole, and Bob Enwall, Vestry Liaison. If you should have any interest in being a part of this committee, please see Fr. Chris+, the Senior Warden, or myself. We would be happy to discuss your interest with you!

Ministry Resident This year was a busy year. I have become involved in many areas of parish life here at Saint Gabriel. At the beginning of January, I took over scheduling our Eucharistic Visitors (EV) for Deacon Karen Henwood. It has been a great year for the EV ministry. We added two new EVs and have served many through home communion throughout the year. In addition to the EV ministry, I’m also involved with the Newcomers Ministry, the Homebased Small Groups Ministry, the Communications Committee, the Youth Group, and I severed on the RenewalWorks task force. In particular, one area of interest that I have begun to develop is reaching out to the 26-45 year-olds living around Saint Gabriel. A big goal of mine this next year is to continue to develop our newcomer ministry so that we are better able to serve newcomers who come through our doors.

I’ve also had several different opportunities this year to lead liturgy, teach, and preach. I led several evening prayer services over the summer while Father Chris was away. I was also able to preach several times this year, teach one class of Adult Christian Formation, and teach one lesson for our Confirmation class.

Overall, I want to thank you for the opportunities I have been given here at Saint Gabriel while I’m in seminary. I know that my education thus far would be lacking without the opportunities that I’ve been given here.

Core Ministries Worship Worship Committee The purpose of this committee is to discuss and evaluate ways to enrich the worship environment of our Sunday and mid-week services. Representatives from the Altar Guild, Acolytes, Ushers, Lectors, Scheduling, Music Ministries, and the Verger are regular attendees. Meetings are open to anyone with an interest or specific concern regarding our worship services. This year we met in February, May and November.

Our long-term chairwoman, Margi Stewart resigned during the summer and Fritz Anders took over as chair. We wish to thank Margi for her many, many years of faithful service to this committee and for all her very hard work.

We continued the tradition of having one morning service during the summer with the

evening service ‘The Gathering’ at 6:00 in the evening.

Great strides were made by the ‘Preparedness’ committee and a fire drill was practiced during both the 8:00 and 10:15 services as well as a December 5 inservice.

Christmas Eve services were at 4:00, 8:00. The 8:00 service was Lessons and Carols with Communion. The choir prepared a wonderful selection of music for this service, and many compliments were received.

Please feel free to call or email me with your concerns or ideas. The committee welcomes input from everyone as we continue to enhance the worship experience here at Saint Gabriel.

Music Through God’s grace, wonderful volunteers and diligent effort, 2015 has been a wonderful year for the music ministry at Saint Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church.

The organ of Saint Gabriel continues to have a very active digital presence on the web and has played a major role in evangelization with fifty three thousand (!) views of over 150 pieces that are regularly played in our worship services.

Serving in the choir is one of the most consistent and demanding of skill/time of all the lay ministries, and our choir has faithfully rehearsed and sung at 40+ services this year. Please personally thank every member. All the choir anthems are compiled in two packets, one from Epiphany to Pentecost and the other from early September through the season of Christmas. For the second Christmas in a row, the choir performed the Nine Lessons and Carols based on the Oxford service.

Altar Guild Members of Saint Gabriel altar guild prepare the sanctuary for all services: worship, weddings, funerals etc throughout the year. At present, there are 23 members of the guild who work in teams of three or four for two consecutive weeks. Additional members assist the team assigned to Christmas, Holy Week and Easter services. Teams are scheduled every six months and serve with different members and at times that are convenient for them. Team members find their own substitute if unable to serve on a scheduled date. New members of the guild are trained by observing and working with a team. The guild welcomes new members who want to be a part of this vital ministry. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Father Chris or me.

The altar guild manual is updated to reflect changes in preparing for services. The master copy of the manual is in the sacristy for reference, though each member has her own copy. At least twice a year, the guild meets for fellowship. Memorials are always welcomed and frequently are designated for linens, vestments, Eucharistic travel kits, crosses etc. It is a pleasure to share this ministry with members of the guild.

Flowers This ministry is responsible, with the exception of Lent, for the Sunday and holiday floral arrangements in the sanctuary niche. Those who wish to give flowers on a designated Sunday, do so by signing the flower calendar found on the parish hall bulletin board. This chart reflects dates for flowers on a specific Sunday given in memory of or on behalf of a special occasion. During the season of Christmas and Easter, additional arrangements are added to grace and honor these special occasions. This ministry commemorates occasions and celebration of events in the life of the parish and in the lives of its members. Colors chosen for the arrangements follow the church year calendar with attention given to special occasions.

More than one person or couple may give flowers on a given date and if this happens, each family pays $30. The arrangement remains in the niche through the Wednesday services. We are currently having King Soopers create the arrangements. When giving flowers, the amount is payable to Saint Gabriel and should be sent or given to Sharon Stewart marked flower fund and date of giving. Barbara Houlik and Kay Ward alternate months in providing arrangements, and can be reached at these numbers. Barbara can be reached at 303-778-0195 and Kay at 720-317-9342.

Worship Team Scheduling I have been scheduling the various volunteers that we need to make the Sunday services and some special services run smoothly for almost two years now. I can tell you that it gets a little easier as time goes along!

That being said, I would be happy at some point to train someone else who would like to take over this position. It is a great privilege to serve alongside Father Chris, Sarah, the members of the Worship Committee and all the team captains for the various volunteer areas, but the time will come to give someone else the opportunity. So please let Father Chris or me know if you are interested.

The captains of ushers, coffee hosts and servers recruit and train the volunteers in their areas, and, as scheduler, all I have to do is to schedule the people into all the various slots. This is like doing a complicated jigsaw puzzle. It really helps when we have sufficient volunteers to schedule. Very many thanks to John Morrison and Joel Johnson for recruiting and training adult and youth servers, and Jane Harper for doing the same with the coffee hosts. A big thank-you to Tom Allen who has served as usher captain for some time, and I look forward to working with Linn Wilson who is taking over that responsibility.

Our goal is to staff the Sunday morning services at Saint Gabriel (and special services as needed) with volunteers to assist at the altar and read the lessons and prayers, and to serve as ushers and coffee hosts. We have over 100 volunteers who serve as acolytes, chalice ministers, lectors (including for prayers), youth torchbearers, ushers and coffee hosts, and we are very grateful to you all.

I believe the main objectives of this ministry are to ensure that services run smoothly

and the worship experience is fulfilling for everyone, and to make sure that all feel welcome at St Gabriel. We aim to include as many people who would like to volunteer, while making sure that no-one is imposed upon by being asked to assist too often.

Currently, the schedule is made out quarterly. When it gets time to make a new schedule, volunteers are invited to let me know dates when they cannot serve, in an effort to avoid as much as possible the hassle of switching assignments. However, your suggestions as to how to make the process run smoother are always welcome.

I would like to end by again thanking all the captains and all the volunteers. It is a privilege and pleasure to work with you.

Youth Acolytes and Torchbearers The youth acolyte program consists of two, distinct serving duties: 1) Torch Bearer and 2) Crucifer (table acolyte) – with the former being the entry level position and the latter a senior, more mature position of youth altar service.

We welcome interested children/youths at any age, beginning at the age of eight or nine, depending on the individual’s ability to: a.) physically handle the lit torch, b.) accept and follow direction, and c.) comport themselves respectfully and reverently at the altar for in excess of one-hour. A general training session for new and returning acolytes is generally held each fall, with one-off and small group training available throughout the year upon special request or need.

The Saint Gabriel youth acolyte program currently has 21 trained acolytes available to the program (including two adult program leaders), with other, college-aged senior acolytes occasionally available to the program for holiday services. This number includes six senior acolytes, trained and available to serve in the Crucifer (table) capacity.

We would like to thank each and every one of our youth acolytes for their valuable service at the altar of Saint Gabriel the Archangel:

Expenses incurred by this program are minimal; however, some acolyte vestment cleaning, repair and replacement is necessary and anticipated this coming year.

Parents and children are always encouraged to visit with Clergy, Joel Johnson, or John Morrison to discuss in more detail joining the Youth Acolyte corps!

Verger This past year brought a number of baptisms, funerals and festival services in which I provided liturgical logistical support as a Verger, Thurifer, or Crucifer/acolyte as needed.

Along with Joel Johnson, I assisted the youth acolytes prior to the 10:15 service and participated in the recruiting/training of new youth acolytes.

Father Chris, Chris Hirschy and I produced an Acolyte Manual, which will be given to each acolyte.

This past fall two, Lector Training sessions were held. Almost all Lectors participated. The sessions involved Meg Stern, an experienced lector from the diocesan office; she enhanced our readers’ Lector skills in a very constructive fashion.

Some new Chalice Ministers were trained and added to the rotation.

I continue to engage new visitors as part of the church hospitality outreach.

John Morrison, Verger

Ushers Ushers are responsible for directing people, attending functions at the church, to safely execute evacuation of the church or any other function that is necessary.

Our goal as ushers is to have people respond to events that will protect anyone who is at the church for any occasion. We use the term “people’ because any event that happens may occur when the congregation is not present.

Coffee Hosts A big thanks to the wonderful parishioners who volunteer their time to be coffee hosts. They are an important part of the fellowship team at Saint Gabriel. The coffee time that follows both services offers our members and guests an opportunity to meet and greet each other.

The coffee hosts set up the serving tables, supply the snacks, make the coffee and clean up the area when the coffee time is over. Each coffee host team is scheduled six to eight times a year. We briefly tried serving food items only once a month. It was quickly decided that our parishioners like to have something to nibble on with their coffee, and food items are now served again weekly after both services.

There are 34 men and women who serve as coffee hosts. We have lost a few hosts during the past year, but fortunately other volunteers have stepped forward to help. There are guidelines that outline the responsibilities of the hosts. New volunteers are asked to become acquainted with the guidelines, and the chair person will assist them as needed when they begin.

Children, Youth, and Family

Children January-June: Tracy Methe

The year started off with an energetic game of Bible Jeopardy in which multigenerational teams competed for the most correct answers. The event was held during Christian formation time in celebration of the season of Epiphany.

During Lent, we offered a five-week class on prayer for children: Spending Time with God—Lessons about Prayer. Each Wednesday, we participated in a soup supper with adults and youth before heading downstairs to explore ways to pray, including praying with words, praying with color and praying with movement. Each class included a hands-on activity—weaving, baking pretzels, making prayer starters—and we had a great time!

Easter included Saint Gabriel’s annual Easter egg hunt and a special Children’s Chapel held in the parish hall for our young parishioners and guests.

In May we hosted our annual Mother’s Day Tea, which was well attended in spite of a late-season snowstorm. Dads prepared tea and dished up treats in the kitchen, and the children and youth served. Then, in June, we turned our attention to the men of our congregation with a special Father’s Day breakfast barbeque.

Our Vacation Bible school theme this year was Message Received—Hearing God’s Call, and we welcomed 43 campers for a week of worship, learning, games and crafts. Over 30 youth and adult volunteers (and one dog) served during the week. This year, proceeds from the Friday car wash went to Mile Hi Ministries’ Joshua Station, which provides transitional housing and services for homeless families. On Sunday we celebrated and shared what we learned with the congregation. Children and youth helped lead the service, and Dexter delivered the homily.

August-December: Megan Hirschy I began the position this past August, and it has been wonderful getting to know the children and families better. August was spent getting prepared for the upcoming year of Godly Play. In late September we met for our first session of Godly Play, including an orientation for parents and children.

I have been serving as a weekly storyteller in the classrooms alternating every six weeks between the elementary class and the pre-k/k class. Volunteers have fulfilled the roles of our second storyteller as well as door people. We average around 3-5 kids in the pre-k/k room each week and 8-10 kids in the elementary room. We have a total of 24 children registered between both classes.

Amy Bass is our regular caregiver in the nursery, and she does a wonderful job. Care was provided 9-11:45 am May-September and 8:45-10:30 am during the summer months.

In the beginning of October, we offered a family movie night, and in late November we had our annual Family Craft Night and Potluck. The craft night was well attended and enjoyed by many families in the church. The crafts we made were then sold at the Christmas

Marketplace in December, with proceeds benefiting a cause the children helped to select.

The children also performed A Children’s Liturgy for Christmas Eve for the 4 pm Christmas Eve service.

Youth I am incredibly thankful for what God has done in our youth ministry this year! We have certainly grown in our love for God and his word. The youth fully understand that Christianity is a personal relationship with God, among a community of believers. We have put our faith into action by serving in many ways, in the church and outside the premises. The Lord has strengthened friendships and He has developed new ones. I know he has used the Quest retreats to deepen our relationships. Our young people are great at inviting friends to youth events and they are very welcoming to new guests.

My prayer and hope is that God continue to deepen their love for Him and for one another. I know He will complete the good work he has begun in all our lives.

Servanthood Outreach Outreach at Saint Gabriel is focused through its Outreach Committee. This Committee effects the following: We actively lead, promote, participate in and support Saint Gabriel’s outreach activities and endeavors throughout the year. In 2015 our church’s outreach activities included:

We dispense our budgeted funds to various assistance organizations and centers while assuring that they make efficient and proper use of the funds they receive in accordance with their stated missions. In 2015 our Committee’s budget for these purposes totaled approximately $42,000. All of these funds were distributed to the agencies that Saint Gabriel supported in 2015 by 1) regular monthly, Committee directed, payments and/or 2) special contributions to help these organizations and centers address specific needs. Congregational Care Committee The Congregational Care Committee celebrated its second birthday this November. We continue to operate under our mission statement which is:

This year we continued the Note Card Ministry, and continue to hold seminars to educate the parish; sponsored a mental health educational group; are developing a database for our volunteers; still support a “stay-at-home” caller; had a special daytime midweek Christmas service, and continue to support Chris Hirschy as he coordinates our Eucharistic Visitors.

The Note Card Ministry was created under the aegis of the Congregational Care Committee in early 2014, and has as its mission the writing and sending of note cards to Saint Gabriel parishioners celebrating happy life events (birthdays, baptisms, anniversaries, etc.) as well as expressing loving concern for those experiencing life’s difficulties (loss, recovery from

surgery, ill-health, etc.). This year we started using cards with artwork by Judy Schlechten and calligraphy by Tess Vonfeldt Gross.

During 2015, 379 cards were sent to parishioners celebrating both birthdays and anniversaries. Ellen Snyder continues Deacon Karen Henwood’s ministry of sending personal notes to parishioners experiencing difficulties. We also continue to call folks in the parish from time to time.

The Pre-Planning Packet is available in the office. It contains the booklet, “Five Wishes,” lessons read at funerals as listed in the Book of Common Prayer, music that would be suitable for a funeral and other helpful information. While we have distributed many of these packets, their return is a bit slower.

Several folks who had undergone surgery or were caregivers to loved ones were provided with meals by folks in the Parish. Preparing the meals and delivering them has been a labor of love.

Our Mental Health Workshop this year dealt with grief. The workshop was well received, and we may consider offering it again.

Our seminar offered by people Roger Rhodes has contact with was Estate and End of Life Planning and Insurance Options - particularly for those entering the later years of their lives.

We again held a special midweek, midday Christmas service. The attendance was larger this year than last as the word gets out and people enjoy this service. It is one of my personal favorites, as it is so touching to see the joy on the faces of those who often are not able to be “in church.” Many also had not seen the interior of the church since the painting was finished - the response was totally positive!

We continue to be aware of and grateful for all the care that is shared informally - what a blessing it is to be a part of this Parish.

Ministry for Military Personnel and Families Sue Coombs reported that she had mailed out Thanksgiving cards to all of our military personnel from our parish. Cards went to Justin Bristow, Jeffrey Rickard (grandson of Don and Kate Corley), John Fenwick, Hunter Heath, and Adam Lane (in the Royal Navy in the UK and Carole Lane's nephew). In addition, we have sent Christmas presents to each of them, which were copies of the Forgiveness book by Larry D. Ellis. He wrote a personal note to each of them, thanking them for their service on behalf of our parish.

Daughters of the King “Empowered by the Holy Spirit, our vision as Daughters of the King is to know Jesus Christ, to make Him known to others, and to become reflections of God’s love throughout the world.” -Vision Statement of the Order

Our order was founded in 1885 and has chapters all over the world. Members undertake a

Rule of Life (prayer, service and evangelism) incorporating the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. The Daughters wear a unique modified Greek Fleury cross, inscribed in Latin, “Magnanimiter Crucem Sustine,” meaning “With heart, mind and spirit uphold and bear the cross.” At the base of the cross are the letters “FHS”, initials that stand for the Motto of the Order: “For His Sake.”

Daughters at Saint Gabriel serve the parish through praying the prayer list daily, welcoming visitors each Sunday with a gift of a mug and information about our parish, helping with the Prayer Quilt Ministry and hosting receptions following memorial services. We also sponsor school children through the Colorado Haiti Project. We meet on the second Saturday of each month (except in the summer) for a business meeting and study program. Our program in 2015 was “Virtues – Christian Values.” We sponsored a Quiet Morning in December led by Nancy Severin, DOK Province President. In June, Lindsay Leaman, Jean Talman and Sharon Stewart attended the Triennial gathering of the Order in Utah.

Our chapter numbers 38 women, including our new member Linda Cole. New members complete a time of study and discernment prior to taking vows to uphold the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service.

Holy Comforters The Prayer Quilt Ministry continues to grow both in the number of prayer quilts blessed as well as the number of participants in this ministry. Twenty-eight prayer quilts have been blessed and given to those on our prayer list in 2015.

We have become mentors for Deacon Karen’s newly formed Prayer Quilt Ministry at her church in South Carolina and, are helping them build their “stash” of fabric by sharing fabric from our “stash.”

For 2016, we will continue to meet the 3rd Friday of the month to insert ties, produce quilt sandwiches and manage our fabrics. A total of five design sessions will be scheduled in 2016, and we will extend the hours to all day. Be sure to check the Trumpet and weekly bulletin inserts for these dates.

Preparedness Committee The Mission of the Church Safety Ministry (Servanthood) at Saint Gabriel: Enhance the safety and well-being of Saint Gabriel parishioners, guests, and facilities from all probable hazards through effective planning, organizing, equipping, training, and exercise programs.

The Vision of the Church Safety Ministry (Servanthood) at Saint Gabriel: A church prepared with coordinated capabilities to prevent, protect against, respond to,

and recover from hazards in a way that balances risk with resources and needs.

The Preparedness Committee met once a month on Wednesdays in 2015. The committee completed eighteen goals and objectives during the year that were aligned with the Saint Gabriel Preparedness vision.

Preparedness Awareness Training was conducted for the congregation on the 27th of September. The training focused on the Preparedness Plan and the role every parishioner could play in making Saint Gabriel a safer church. Specific Preparedness Training was conducted on the 5th of December, and was focused on the knowledge, skills, and capabilities that are needed for response to emergencies at Saint Gabriel. Training included first aid, CPR, AED (Automated External Defibrillator), and fire extinguisher procedures.

The Preparedness Committee conducted a fire drill after the 8 am service and the 10:15 am service on the 17th of May that focused on evacuation procedures after a fire is detected in the kitchen. A South Metro Fire Rescue team participated in the drill and evaluated the performance of all participants. The drill was a resounding success with many lessons learned.

The Church Safety Ministry has developed fourteen goals for 2016 to enhance our preparation for weather, fire, medical, or human caused threats to Saint Gabriel. We encourage every member of Saint Gabriel to take advantage of the preparedness training offered to make your home, church, and workplace safer. Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.

Discipleship Adult Christian Formation The discipleship committee, consisting of Larry Ellis, Chris Ditzenberger, Gary Hague, Jeanie Hague, Linda Cole, and Marj Decker, have laid out plans for our adult formation classes through the end of February 2016. For the 2015 fall class, we developed a two-fold teaching session for each class. Our emphasis was to demonstrate that God wants to transform our hearts as we grow close to him. Each class session had two parts. One part was a Bible teaching on someone who had a major spiritual formation, particularly as they encountered God in a transformative way. The second part was the personal testimony of some of our own parishioners, who told the story of their personal spiritual journeys. The series for Advent focused on the theme of formation taken from the Revised Common Lectionary readings for year C which are the texts read in our Advent worship services. On January 24 and 31, we plan to share more detail about findings from RenewalWorks. In February, Gary Hague will be teaching a series.

RenewalWorks RenewalWorks was a parish-wide spiritual inventory survey. Our agenda was to learn where we are as a congregation on our spiritual journey toward living a life fully centered on Christ. We completed our survey with 71% of our parish taking the survey, which is

considered an excellent level of participation. Our thirteen member task force consisting of Larry Ellis, David Ariss, Jennifer Casani, Tate Fox, Chris Hirschy, Margaret Kremers, Tess Vonfeldt-Gross, Sharon Stewart, Margi Stewart, Linn Wilson, Kay Ward, and Fr. Chris Ditzenberger. Our five planned working sessions of the task force for our RenewalWorks Project have been completed. Almost everyone in the group has contributed to writing some of the final report of our findings and recommendations. It is our intention to present the report to the vestry at our January meeting and to the entire parish at our meeting on January 17th. In it you will find an accurate profile of our congregation, along with a number of assessments of things we are doing well, and a number of areas where we need to do substantially better. No doubt some of our findings and recommendations will impact many areas of the parish. It is particularly revealing to see what some of our strengths, as well as weakness, are when we compare our findings with those of other Episcopal parishes and the much larger segment of Christian churches.

Wednesday Morning Men’s Breakfast All men in the parish are welcome to come join the fun.

The Men’s group meets Wednesday mornings at 7:00 for a Eucharist Service followed by breakfast. We enjoy good Christian Fellowship and excellent meals prepared by our members and/or their spouses. There is a sign-up sheet passed around quarterly so that everyone gets a chance to be the cook. The providers can be reimbursed for their expenses out of the $5.00 per head that we contribute. We usually have between 10 and 15 present each week, and we never extend our meeting and clean-up past 9:00.

In the past year, we have contributed over $1,500 of our excess cash flow to Saint Gabriel for Youth activities such as the Scavenger Hunt and the Youth Mission Trips, and we purchased a projector and screen, which can be used in the Parish Hall.

Our discussions after breakfast in the last half of the year have concentrated on exploring several of the larger religions of the world such as Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism. We expect to continue this exploration into 2016.

Men of the Covenant The Men of the Covenant (MOC) small group ministry provides the men of Saint Gabriel’s with regular opportunities to enter into a closer personal relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Members receive spiritual insight and support from the group, as we face the daily challenges that come with living out our Baptismal Covenant.

For 16 years, MOC has sought to equip each man with the necessary preparation and tools (via scriptural studies, service projects, theological reflections, group discussions, and occasional corporate prayer) to aid him as he adopts the Baptismal Covenant as his rule of life.

During 2015, between six and ten participants met in the library on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 9:00 am for group studies and discussions. In addition, on the fourth Saturday of each month, some MOC members, with members of their families, regularly served as volunteers in the Basic Services department at the St. Francis Center.

Highlights of the year’s activities and learning include: continuation of a survey of personal prayer with a study of Thanksgiving prayer; group discussion of the implications of The Atlantic’s investigation of “What ISIS Really Wants“; collecting and donating needed clothing to the ingathering for the St. Francis Center; regular theological reflections based upon the central elements of the Baptismal Covenant; and the start of a study of Nabeel Qureshi’s book Seeking Allah and Finding Jesus. Each session/activity explored the positive implications for both individual members and the broader community, as we seek to live into the vows we made at baptism.

The Men of the Covenant looks forward to welcoming the men of Saint Gabriel’s into our fellowship, as they join us for reflection, support and service in 2016!

Homebased Small Groups This year has been a transitional year for the homebased small groups program. Last January, I met with current group leaders to discuss how their small groups where going and to discuss the possibilities for the future of this ministry. Our meeting went well, but the decision was ultimately made to wait for the results of the RenewalWorks survey to guide the next steps we take in this ministry. Once the RenewalWorks data has been fully analyzed, I look forward to further developing this ministry.

Christopher L. Hirschy, Homebased Small Groups Leader

Newcomers Ministry Chris Hirschy wrote an article for the Trumpet sharing the results of a demographic study he did of a three-mile circle around Saint Gabriel. The results were startling, and display the necessity that we increase our on-line presence. Some of the important findings were that 90%-95% of those living within 1 mile of Saint Gabriel are between 25-45 years of age. Also, the single largest group living within 3 miles of Saint Gabriel is single 25-34 year old professionals that make between $60,000-$70,000 a year. Because this profile is not representative of our parish, there is an opportunity to increase our congregation, if we can provide information about our parish to those who are interested. Therefore, Chris Hirschy has been developing a church blog to increase our on-line presence. Sarah Dougherty and he are working to increase our on-line presence on Facebook, the website and Twitter.

In addition to the work mentioned above, we hope to compile a Newcomers Committee at the beginning of this year with the goal of improving our newcomer ministry systems. This committee would handle sending welcome letters, keep accurate data of visitors to Saint Gabriel, and creating systems to help integrate newcomers fully into parish life. One way that we have already begun to do this is through featuring new families and individuals in the Trumpet in the section called “Faces of Saint Gabriel.”

Fellowship Gadabouts

“Gadabouts” is a group of parishioners, both couples and singles, who gather about once a month to share a meal and fellowship. In 2015, we had 5 groups of 6 – 8 folks for a total of 40 participants. There is an initial host assigned, but after the first dinner each group sets their own schedule and how they organize the dinners. The groups then rotate who is the host, who sets the menu. The host assigns each other person or couple something to bring to the dinner.

For 2016, we have many returning people and several new people. We are still actively recruiting folks who would like to participate. In November, we held a Gadabouts Pot Luck dinner at the church to allow those interested to experience the great fellowship and to provide feedback for changes to the program. Two ideas that will be incorporated are: providing a driver for those who no longer drive after dark and encouraging those with limited space in their homes to partner with another member. Other ideas are always encouraged. For 2016 Shelia and David Martin will be the coordinators. Ramsey Golf Tournament The Annual John Ramsey Memorial Golf Tournament and Dinner has been held for 24 years! This past year we enjoyed fabulous weather on Saturday, June 20th.

We assembled at Heather Gardens with 26 Golfers teeing-off at 2:00 pm. As the golfers came in from their rain-free, hail-free round, 44 gathered at the Rendezvous Restaurant for cocktails and then dinner.

We had a great multi-generational gathering, from teenagers to those in their eighties.

We acknowledged the winners of the golfing event: • Nada Graves took the honors for the Lowest Round for Women and winner of the

coveted Champion’s Hat. Nada also won the Longest Drive Contest for Women. • We had a tie for the Lowest Round for Men and winner of the coveted Green Jacket,

between Jack Hartman and Philip Jolas. The Winner of the Longest Drive Contest for Men was Philip Jolas. Don Graves won the Closest to the Pin for Men.

• Most Valuable Golfer and winner of the coveted Silver Clubs Trophy was Hugh Sweeney • Each winner also received a 15-pack of new golf balls.

After dinner, we awarded 10 door prizes, which included gift cards to local restaurants and free home care services.

We had great fellowship and socializing on a beautiful afternoon and evening at the 24th Annual John Ramsey Memorial Golf Tournament and Dinner.

Parish Camping Weekend The annual parish camping weekend was held once again at beautiful Mueller State Park. In all, there were approximately 24 campers in attendance. In addition to games of corn hole, ladder ball, and a hike to watch the sunset, unique to this year was the opportunity to tour Cathedral Ridge and experience the high ropes course, compliments of the Diocese. The highlight of the course was the ascent up a 35-foot pole, the top of which one was to somehow stand upon, and then finally leap from (gulp…) in the hope of grabbing a trapeze as if in the circus! Great fun was had by all, and many were eager to repeat the exercise. Later that evening we all gathered to share a potluck dinner, which was then followed by stories and songs around the campfire.

On Sunday morning we celebrated the Eucharist with Fr. Chris - and had the unexpected pleasure of a couple from Florida joining us in worship. Please consider attending in 2016. I think you will find it a wonderful opportunity for making new friends and building relationships.

Solo Angels Another year, an abbreviated number of lunch bunch outings, however the Solo Angels continue to meet and eat whenever their fearless leader gets her act together and arranges such outings. This past year we did enjoy our fellowship time together and we look forward to exploring more intriguing cuisine more often. Look for the sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.

Artists’ Gallery The Gallery art exhibit continues to thrive thanks to the creative contributions from the following artists: Sue Coombs, Sally Doty, Janice Hanson, Priscilla Garrett, Melinda Haymons, Holly Lana, Suzanne Lee, Jane Olbricht, Gail Parsons, and Jean Talman. Melinda Haymons has 6 lovely landscapes in the All Angels room.

Every 4 months the exhibit changes ( January, May and September). We welcome other adult Saint Gabriel's artists who are interested in participating. If you have something you would like to show, please contact one of the artists.

Stewardship • Provided and promoted annual giving, pledging, tithing, through the First Fruits: A

Celebration of Stewardship campaign. The goal of this year’s campaign was to retain the spiritual emphasis of the Consecration model. As of November 16th, 127 pledges were received totaling $396,106. Following the November 8th combined service, a celebratory, catered brunch was served and attended by approximately 150 people.

• The King Soopers Gift Card program, under the direction of Carole Lane, continued to provide supplemental income through the 5% rebate from King Soopers.

• Continued to submit stewardship articles to the Trumpet.

• Reviewed stewardship programs for children and youth. Youth programs may be used as part of the confirmation classes in the future.

• Explored ways to help promote the legacy programs.

• Committee representative attended the Colorado Episcopal Foundation workshop in the spring of 2015.

New Legacy Journey – Endowment • The first annual distribution of $6,357 (5% of the fund balance) from our Endowment

Trust was made in January, 2015. This was the first distribution since the inception of our Endowment Trust.

• Funds were used to support the Youth trip to the UK; purchase of the new large flat panel TV and other audio equipment for the parish hall; and funding for the 55th anniversary Evensong event and the guest choirs

• The Endowment Fund investment returns were negative through the 1st 3 quarters of 2015 due to downturn in the markets. Therefore, the annual distribution for the 2016 year was made for $4,189 (3% of fund balance).

• Our Endowment Trust was the beneficiary of a large bequest from the Martha Ramsey estate, which boosted the Endowment Fund balance to over $200,000 as of November, 2015

• The Endowment Committee and the Vestry gave approval to use the annual Endowment Fund distributions over the next 3 years toward support of our Church’s support for the Diocese Cathedral Ridge Conference Center capital campaign.

• The Endowment Committee and the Vestry also gave approval to use the endowment fund for a small interest-bearing loan to make up the difference for Saint Gabriel’s 3-year Cathedral Ridge pledge commitment. This loan will be repaid over a 5-year repayment period. The loan is being made from the growth of our Endowment Trust and not from any principal or the corpus of our trust fund.

Evensong – Fab 55 An evening of gratitude, reflection and celebration marked the 55th anniversary of Saint Gabriel the Archangel and a decade of service by Fr. Chris. Orchestrated by Fritz Anders, musical performances were presented by our own Saint Gabriel choir, the Royal School of Church Music Children’s Choir from Epiphany Episcopal Church and the Never on Sunday choir, made up of choristers from High Plains Region choirs. The Reverend Fr. Stacey Timothy Tafoya from Church of the Epiphany delivered the homily.

A catered reception in the Parish Hall for approximately 140 parishioners and guests followed, together with a slide show on the big screen. Fr. Chris was lauded for his 10 years of service and presented with commemorative gifts.

Minutes of the Annual Parish Meeting St. Gabriel the Archangel Episcopal Church

Saint Gabriel the Archangel Proclaims and Celebrates the Good News of God’s Grace and Life-Changing Love for All

The St. Gabriel Annual Parish meeting was called to order at 10:45 am on Sunday, January 25, 2014 by the Rev’d Christopher Ditzenberger. In accordance with St. Gabriel bylaws requirements, Father Chris declared a quorum was present, and appointed Brooke Fox as the Secretary for the purpose of recording minutes of the meeting. Father Chris offered a Collect for the Local Church as the opening prayer.

Lisa Swenson requested members refer to and review the January 26, 2014 annual meeting minutes (presented on page 23 of the Annual Report). A motion to approve the minutes was seconded and unanimously approved.

Father Chris recognized the retiring members of the vestry, Barbara Morrison, Mason Whitney and Brooke Fox, with heartfelt comments, appreciation and a parting gift for each. Each retiring member served for three years.

George Evans, Senior Warden, expressed his appreciation for work of the retiring Vestry members. Mr. Evans gave the report of the Nominating Committee (the committee consists of the Senior and Junior Wardens and the retiring members of the Vestry). In accordance with the bylaws, the committee considered individuals who are: 1) members of the parish; 2) regular attendees; and 3) contributing members. The nominating committee presented the nominees in the December Trumpet. No additional nominees were nominated within the allotted time. As such, Mr. Evans declared the nominations closed. Those persons standing for Vestry included Gina Fielder, Larry Ellis and Will Pickard. The nominees were approved by acclamation. Father Chris, Mr. Evans and Mrs. Swenson conducted the Commissioning of the new Vestry members and presented them with church door keys, a copy of the parish bylaws, and a vestry handbook. Father Chris welcomed the new members of the vestry and introduced the 2015 Vestry members and officer team to the congregation.

Father Chris provided the Rector’s Report. He thanked Chris Hirschy, Sarah Dougherty and ministry leaders for their work on preparing the Annual Report. Father Chris reflected on the staff transitions made during 2014 including staff transitions (Sarah Dougherty as Parish Administrator), Dexter Nocon (Youth Pastor) and Chris Hirschy (Ministry Resident). In addition, with thanksgiving, Father Chris highlighted progress made during the last year through strong lay leadership in areas including: Church Campus, Arts and Architecture (C2A2), Congregational Care, Preparedness, and the Legacy Journey. Father Chris also gave thanks for Anne Cosby’s sacrificial service on many projects over several years, and for Sarah Dougherty’s hard work in transitioning to a new website.

Father Chris provided the following comments as he looks forward to the coming year. Deacon Karen’s last day with the parish will be February 15th. After 5 years as the Children, Youth and Family Director, Tracy Methe will be stepping down to follow a call for spiritual grow in other areas. 2015 will be the “Year of Discipleship,” and Father Chris looks forward to using a program called “RenewalWorks” to help direct our attention to this

effort. Additional work on the art projects that have adorned the church’s entry, nave and sanctuary will continue this year.

Malin Jones provided an update on the Legacy Journey program which included the thankful recognition of Lindsay and Bob Leaman, Barbara and Peter Judd and CJ and Chris Ditzenberger for their gracious legacy commitments. In addition, he thanked the Endowment Committee (Malin Jones, Chair; Chris Haymons; Bob Leaman; and Diane Mounts) for their work to build and make endowment funds available for the first time. Mr. Jones also thanked Gary Hague for his work in producing videos for the website to explain and encourage participation in the Legacy Journey program. The attendees were treated to a premier of the first video, which featured Father Chris’ perspective on stewardship.

Father Chris asked the members of the congregation to prayerfully consider conducting a capital campaign within the next few years. Potential needs for funds include: 1) church campus improvements, 2) additional clergy; and 3) the Diocesan capital campaign for the Center at Cathedral Ridge.

In the Rector-led Discussion time, Father Chris revisited the idea of strengthening the core ministry area of Discipleship. Father Chris reviewed the church’s mission, vision and strengths and asked the congregation to reflect the “Building a Disciplining Culture” handout. Some members of the congregation spoke up with their thoughts that the culture at St. Gabriel may be characterized as in between “Cozy” and “Empowered.” Father Chris will be encouraging the Vestry and lay leaders to use the handout in the coming year to help build up the Discipleship core ministry area.

Joel Johnson presented the 2015 budget report, and stated that St. Gabriel continues on a path of financial strength, use of sound financial practices, and a debt-free balance sheet. Mr. Johnson directed the congregation to review the budget report contained in the Annual Report, which notes that the 2015 budget projects a $12,000 surplus. He encouraged anyone who many have questions to contact any member of the finance committee (Joel Johnson and Hal Roth). In addition, he announced that the finance committee will gladly accept new members.

Father Chris invited Barbara Morrison to lead A Litany for the Mission of the Church, and Fritz Anders led the congregation in the Doxology.

Father Chris adjourned the meeting at approximately 11:45 am.
