The Sanctuary Candle that will be lit this week during our Eucharistic Celebration is in memory of Murriel & Jack Hayes. This is a gift from Ron & Maureen Roaldsen.

The Vatican II Council Fathers told us that Christ is present in four ways during the sacred liturgy. Firstly, and most excellently in the species of bread and wine. The bread and wine are brought from the gifts of the people they are prefigured by the gifts of the Priest of God Most High, Melchisedek (Gen. 14) who offers bread and wine. The covenant with Moses and the Children of Israel is sealed at the Passover with the sacrifice of the lamb. The blood of the lamb is painted on the doorposts and lintels so the Angel of Death passes over their house. The Lord tells them to do this as a remembrance in perpetuity, forever. In the Gospel for the next few weeks taken form John 6, Jesus tells us HE is the Bread of Life. In this chapter he repeats it nine times in different ways. He does not say, “it’s a symbol”; or “it’s kinda like my body and blood”; or “it’s really a metaphor or an analogy”; or “ I’m just kidding.” He really means it. At the Last Supper He institutes the Holy Eucharist. Bread and wine: He takes, He blesses, He breaks and He gives. Like his Body is broken for us on the cross the bread is broken for us at Mass. Some people complain, “but it doesn’t look like bread.” That’s funny. I asked a jewish man who was preparing for Baptism what the host looked like. He immediately replied, “That’s matzo.” — that is, unleavened bread. The type of bread Jesus would have used at the Last Supper at the time of Passover. Likewise the wine is the fruit of the vine. In those days wine was kept concentrated in large vessels called amphorae. When it was drawn out for drinking it was mixed with water. The host, in this case Jesus, would have mixed the concentrated wine with water to make it drinkable. That is why the priest will add some water to the wine before the offers the wine. One misconception is that when Jesus says, “Do this in memory of me” it signifies that it is just a memorial (make belief). This is incorrect. He tells us to remember because God told Moses to remember the Passover. This is the New Covenant, to be remembered in perpetuity. Furthermore the word in Hebrew meant “to make it real again”. As Flannery O’Connor said, “If it’s just a symbol, I say the hell with it.” But it is not a symbol. That bread and wine is the true body, soul, humanity and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ which He himself said he would give us in the sixth Chapter of the Gospel of Saint John.

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Murriel & Jack Hayes. This is a gift from Ron & Maureen Roaldsen.

A Message from Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Parish Intention of the month That we emulate the blessed virgin's example of virtuous living, and total acceptance of God's will, as we honor her immaculate heart, and celebrate her bodily assumption into heaven.
